Item VALIDATION OF NEWLY DEVELOPED RAPESEED-MUSTARD VARIETIES/LINE IN HIGH LAND FOR DEVELOPMENT OF MUSTARD-FALLOW- T. AMAN PATTERN IN SYLHET(Dept. of Agronomy and Haor Agriculture, 2016-06) RAFAT-AL-FOYSAL, MD.The experiment was carried out at the farmer’s fields at Kamalbazar, South Surma, Sylhet district during November 2014 to March 2015 to select high yielding variety(s) of rapeseedmustard suitable for cultivation in high land areas under partially irrigated conditions after harvest of T. Aman rice. The treatments included in the experiment were A. Irrigation levels viz. i. One irrigation at 25 DAS & ii. Two irrigation at 25 DAS and 55 DAS B. Rapeseed-mustard varieties viz. i. Tori-7, ii. BARI sarisha-13 (B. napus), iii. BARI sarisha-14 (B. campestris), iv. BARI sarisha-15 (B. campestris), v. BARI sarisha-16 (B. juncea), vi. Advanced line Nap-205 and vii. BINA sarisha-4 (B. napus). Results indicated that yield and yield contributing characters did not differ significantly due to irrigation levels. The results also revealed that yield and yield contributing characters differed significantly among the varieties. BARI sarisha-16 produced the tallest plant (127.7 cm) compared with the other varieties whereas BARI sharisa-14 produced the shortest plant (60.1 cm) which was statistically similar to Tori-7 (60.5 cm). The highest number (5.9) of branch plant -1 was produced by BARI sarisha-15 which was followed by BARI sarisha14 (5.4 branch plant -1 ) and the lowest (3.1 plant -1 by BARI sarisha-13. Length of siliqua, number -1 of siliqua plant , 1000-seed weight, seed yield, straw yield, biological yield and harvest index significantly differed among the varieties and advanced line. The variety BARI sarisha-16 produced the highest seed yield (993 kg ha , number of seed siliqua -1 ) which was significantly different from the others. BINA sarisha-4 produced the second highest seed yield (898 kg ha -1 ) while the lowest (645 kg ha -1 -1 ) was produced by the variety Tori-7. BARI sarisha-16 required the maximum days (89.3) for maturity but Tori-7 and BARI sarisha-14 had the minimum days (76.3 & 77.5 days respectively). There was no significant variation due to combined effect of variety and irrigation level on yield and yield attributes. Seed yield was positively correlated with plant height, siliqua plant -1 and 1000-seed weight. The newly developed rapeseed-mustard varieties/line had high seed yield and may be well fitted into the Mustard-Fallow-T. Aman rice cropping pattern.Item AGRO-MORPHOLOGICAL CHARACTERIZATION OF GLUTNOUS, NON-GLUTINOUS, AROMATIC AND NON-AROMATIC RICE CULTIVARS OF SYLHET(Dept. of Agronomy and Haor Agriculture, 2016-06) JAHAN, NOUSHINAgro-morphological and physico-chemical characterization is fundamental in order to provide information for plant breeding programs. The aim of the present study was to characterize twenty local rice cultivars including glutinous and aromatic rice, following agro-morphological Rice descriptor, IBPGR-IRRI., 1980.The experiment was conducted under field condition during the period from June to December, 2014, at the experimental field of the Department of Agronomy and Haor Agriculture, Sylhet Agricultural University, Sylhet. Grain physicochemical analysis was done at the laboratory of Grain Quality and Nutrition Division, Bangladesh Rice Research Institute (BRRI). Seeds were collected across the Sylhet and the study was conducted following Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with three replications. Polymorphism was observed among 30 of 34 qualitative characters evaluated, whereas significant differences were observed for all the analyzed quantitative traits. In terms of qualitative and quantitative traits Khakibiruin, Kakhibiruin, Gandi, Chorabiruin and Biruin possessed a good number of traits like, leaf length, flag leaf length, tillering habit, culm angle, height, lodging resistance, panicle length number of grain per panicle with higher yield than rest of the cultivars. The highest number of tillers was recorded by the rice cultivar Muktasail which was around 20 tillers per three plant in average and lowest tiller number showed by Madhumadab which was 10 tiller. Highest panicle length showed by cultivar Akhnisail (24.92 cm) and lowest by Chinirsail (19.14 cm). Akhnisail showed highest (138.4) grain per panicle followed by Muktasail and Khakibiruin showed lowest grain per panicle (75). The highest filled grain per panicle was observed in Muktasail (109.9) lowest grain per panicle was observed in Bantos (55.4). Highest grain yield was observed in Kakhibiruin (1.68 t/ha) followed by Khakibiruin and Gandi. Lowest yield was observed in Madhumadab (0.54 t/ha) and Muktasail (0.54 t/ha). All the sources were not significantly different in terms of correlation of yield and yield attributes. Leaf length and breadth, culm length and diameter, flag leaf length, effective tiller, panicle length and 1000-seed weight showed a positive relationship with yield. In physicochemical properties analysis Kakhibiruin, Khakibiruin, Chorabiruin, Biruin and Botabiruin found glutinous type endosperm and Kalijira, Chinigura and Madhumadab found scented cultivar.Item STUDY ON DIFFERENT WEED MANAGEMENT APPROACHES IN AUS RICE AT SYLHET(Dept. of Agronomy and Haor Agriculture, 2016-06) RUMAN, MD.RAQUIBUL ISLAMAn experiment was conducted at the experimental field of Sylhet Agricultural University (SAU) to find out the effective weed management practices in Aus rice. There were eight treatments viz., Herbicide Rifit ( T1), Cicord (T2), T1 & T2 combination ( T3), NPK guti ( T4), Prilled urea (T5), weedy control (T6), weed free control (T7), and hand weeding (T8) with 3 replications. The rice variety was BRRI dhan55 and it was transplanted on 1 week of May and harvested on mid of July, 2014. Ten major weed species were recorded in the experimental plots. Among these four were board-leaved, two were grasses and the rest were sedges. The most prominent weeds were Cyperus iria, Sphenoclea zeylanica, Luduigia hyssopifolia, Cyanotis axillaris, Cyperus flavidus, Lindernia procumbens, Digitaria ischaemum, Leersia hexandra, Fimbristylis milieaceae. The highest weed population (10.04/m st ) was recorded in weedy check (T6) plots and the lowest weed density (0.74/m 2 ) was in weed free check (T7) followed by T3 treated plots. Yield and yield contributing characters like plant height, number of effective tillers per hill, panicle length and number of grain per panicle were significantly affected by different weed management approaches. The highest grain yield (1.64 t ha 2 ) was recorded using in the treatment of NPK guti (T4) which was followed by T3 and the lowest weed yield was recorded in weedy check plots (T6). The partial budget analysis showed that the highest net profit from rice cultivation was in treatment T3 followed by NPK guti (T4) and the lowest profit was in hand weeded plot (T8). The economic analysis also showed that two herbicide mixed used plots had the highest (1.29) benefit-cost ratio (BCR) which was almost similar to NPK guti (1.26). The results indicated that herbicidal treatments were profitable than other treatments. Besides, NPK guti fertilizer used at a time showed an alternative option in weed management in rice field. It may be concluded that herbicidal treatment or using guti NPK can be used as an alternative option when labor is a limiting factor in producing transplanted Aus rice. -1Item STUDY ON COMPETITIVENESS OF AUS RICE VARIETIES AGAINST WEED INFESTATION(Dept. of Agronomy and Haor Agriculture, 2016-12) SHAWON, SHUVRA DHARAn experiment on Aus rice was conducted at the Agronomy Research Field of Sylhet Agricultural University, Sylhet-3100 as well as in the farmer‘s field of Jaintapur and Gowainghat upazila, Sylhet to find out the competitiveness of Aus rice varieties against weed infestation. Five (5) commercial rice varieties viz. BR3, BRRI dhan48, Aloron, BRRI dhan43, Iratom-24 along with three (3) local cultivars Aina Miah, Doom and Kanihati were included in the research field trial. On the other hand, thirty farmer‘s field were surveyed along with researcher‘s managed trial was conducted to compare weed situation. In farmer‘s field, 5 (five) treatments namely the rice variety BR3, hybrid variety Aloron, BRRI dhan55, BRRI dhan48 and Aina Miah, a local low yielding rice variety/cultivar (LYV) were included. The experiment was started on April 2014 and was harvested on August 2014 depending on the variety. Eight weed species were recorded in the research field trial. Whereas 28 weed species were recorded in the farmer‘s field trial. The most prominent weeds in the experiment were Monochoria vaginalis, Digitaria sangunalis, Leersia hexandra, Cynodon dactylon etc. Among the rice varieties hybrid variety Aloron and BRRI dhan48 showed high competitiveness against weeds. Result indicated in research field that the local variety Aina Miah showed maximum plant height (105.4 cm) and Iratom-24 was the minimum (68.63 cm). The hybrid variety Aloron recorded the maximum panicle length (24.53 cm) and the minimum length (17.27 cm) was in the variety Doom. The highest number (103.53) of filled grains panicle was produced by the hybrid variety Aloron and lowest (41.87) by the variety BRRI dhan43. The highest grain yield (4.04 t ha -1 -1 ) was produced by the hybrid variety Aloron which was statistically identical with the variety BRRI dhan48 (3.19 t ha ) was recorded in local cultivar Doom which was at par with BRRI dhan43 (1.32 t ha -1 ) and Iratom-24 (3.06 t ha -1 ). The lowest yield (1.07 t ha -1 ) and local cultivar Kanihati (1.53 t ha -1 ). The highest weed competitive index was recorded in Aloron (2.27) and the lowest was recorded in Doom (0.42). In the farmer‘s field trial, the hybrid variety Aloron showed the highest grain yield (3.71 t ha -1 ) was recorded in LYV (Aina Miah). The highest weed competitive index (2.05) was recorded in BRRI dhan48, that was statistically identical with the variety Aloron (1.71) and the lowest weed competitive index (0.49) was recorded in BR3. -1 ). The lowest grain yield (1.72 t ha -1Item EFFECT OF NUMBER OF SEEDLING PER HILL AND SPACING ON THE GROWTH AND YIELD OF HYBRID RICE(Dept. of Agronomy and Haor Agriculture, 2015-12) CHOWDHURY, DHRUBAJYOTIAn experiment was carried out at the Experimental Field of the Department of Agronomy and Haor Agriculture, Sylhet Agricultural University, Sylhet-3100 under the AEZ 22 (Northern & Eastern Piedmont Plains) in Kharif-II (Aman) season during the period of July 2013 to November 2013 to evaluate the effect of number of seedling hill and spacing on the growth and yield of hybrid rice line Bio-453. The experiment was laid out in a split plot design with three replications. Two levels of seedling hill -1 ) and five levels of plant spacing viz. Sp1 (15 cm × 15 cm), Sp2 (15 cm × 20 cm), Sp3 (20 cm × 20 cm), Sp4 (20 cm × 25 cm) and Sp5 (20 cm × 30 cm) were the treatments of this study. Result obtained from experiment revealed that number of seedling hill -1 viz. NS1 (1 seedling hill -1 ) and NS2 (2 seedlings hill -1 had no significant influence on growth parameter like plant height at different days after transplanting (DAT) while another growth parameter like number of tiller hill -1 at different days after transplanting (DAT) was significantly influenced. Some of yield contributing characters were also significantly influenced by number of seedling hill -1 -1 . Single seedling hill like number of total tiller hill -1 and number of effective tiller hill -1 -1 ) might be attribute by the combined effect of number of total tiller hill produced highest grain yield (8.38 t ha -1 -1 and 1000-grain weight. Plant spacing had significant effect on both growth parameters and different yield contributing characters under the study. The closest plant spacing 15 cm × 15 cm (Sp1) produced maximum grain yield (8.93 t ha , number of effective tiller hill -1 , filled grain panicle -1 and spacing had significant influences on grain yield. The combination of 1 seedling hill -1 ). Interaction effect between number of seedling hill -1 (NS1) along with the spacing of 15 cm × 15 cm (Sp1) produced significantly highest grain yield (9.43 t ha -1 ) and also produced maximum biological yield (25.70 t ha -1 (NS1) along with the spacing 15 cm × 20 cm (Sp2) and 1 seedling hill -1 ). The combination of 1 seedling hill -1 (NS1) along with 20 cm × 20 cm (Sp3) produced statistically similar grain yield (9.26 t ha -1 , respectively) to that of Sp1. Grain yield progressively reduced with increase of spacing at both 1 and 2 seedlings hill -1 -1 and 8.86 t ha . The lowest grain yield (7.00 t ha -1 (NS1) along with the spacing 20 cm × 30 cm which was statistically similar to that of 7.36 t ha -1 ) was obtained from 1 seedling hill -1 and 7.56 t ha -1 -1 , 7.96 t ha -1 (NS1) along with the spacing 20 cm × 25 cm (Sp4), 2 seedling hill obtained from the combination of 1 seedling hill -1 (NS2) along with the spacing 20 cm × 30 cm (Sp5), respectively. -1 (NS2) along with the spacing 20 cm × 25 cm (Sp4)and 2 seedlings hill -1Item Performance of Mungbean Varieties as Influenced by Sowing Dates in Sylhet Region(Dept. of Agronomy and Haor Agriculture, 2015-12) SUMIT, SARKERAn attempt was made in the Agronomy Field Laboratory, Sylhet Agricultural University, Sylhet during the period from January to December 2013 to investigate the performance of mungbean varieties viz., BARI Mung-5 (V2) and BARI Mung-6 (V1), as influenced by sowing time from January (S1) to December (S12) in Sylhet region. The experiment was conducted in a Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with three replications assigning the sowing dates and varieties on the plots. Unit plot size was 10 m (4.0 m × 2.5 m) with a spacing of 30×10 cm distance. The experimental plots were fertilized at the rate of 18, 32 and 21 kg ha 2 -1 of N, P and K respectively for each sowing time and whole amount applied as basal dose during final land preparation. Weeding, irrigation and other intercultural operations were done as and when necessary. On an average about 60 days after sowing (DAS) mungbean pods were harvested two times within 10 (ten) days interval for each of the sowing times. The results of the experiment showed that variety had slightly or no significant influence and sowing date exerted significant influence on most of the yield and yield contributing characters of mungbean including plant m , number of pods plant -2 , number of branches plant -1 -1 , pod length, 1000 seed weight, grain yield, Stover yield and harvest index. BARI Mungbean- 6 produced the highest branches plant -1 , number of seeds pod and other yield and yield contributing characters compared to BARI Mung-5. The highest seed yield 693.1 kg ha -1 -1 was obtained from 05 June sowing. It was also found that both the varieties gave highest yield on 20 March sowing and all yield and yield contributing characters of mungbean may be reduced for delayed sowing from 20 March. was obtained from 20 March sowing and the lowest seed yield 196.1 kg ha -1Item EFFECT OF RELAY AND TRADITIONAL METHODS OF SOWING ON THE GROWTH AND YIELD OF PEA VARIETIES IN PEA-FALLOW-T. AMAN RICE PATTERN(Dept. of Agronomy and Haor Agriculture, 2013-12) Faysal, Khalilur RahmanThe experiment was conducted at the Agronomy Farm, Sylhet Agricultural University during the period from November 2012 to February 2013 to know the effect of sowing methods (relay and traditional following land preparation) and select suitable variety(s) of pea in the Pea-Fallow-T. Aman rice cropping pattern. There were two sowing methods (i. relay with T. Aman rice and ii. Traditional after harvest of T. Aman rice following land preparation) and four pea varieties (i. BARI motoshuti-1, ii. IPSA motorshuti-1, iii. Jhikorgacha local and iv. Natore local) as treatments in the experiment. The results exhibited that yield and all yield contributing characters except number of seed/pod differed significantly between the two sowing methods. Significantly higher values of plant height, number of pod/plant, 100 seed weight, green pod yield and fodder yield were found in relay cropping system. Higher green pod yield (2872 kg/ha) in relay cropping system was possibly attributed by the higher number of pod/plant and larger seed size. The results also revealed that yield and all yield attributes differed significantly among the varieties. The variety Jhikorgacha local produced the highest mean green pod yield (3030 kg/ha) and it was statistically similar to that of Natore local (3008 kg/ha) might be attributed by the higher plant population per unit area and number of pod/plant mainly. BARI motorshuti-1 produced the lowest green pod yield (1874 kg/ha) possibly because of fewer number of pod/plant and plant population/m2. All the parameters except number of seed/pod and 100-seed weight varied significantly due to interaction of sowing methods and varieties. Statistically at par and significantly highest number of pod was found in IPSA motorshuti-1 and Natore local in relay cropping system. The lowest number of pod/plant was found in BARI motorshuti-1 which was similar to those of others with same traditional sowing method. In general, all varieties gave higher green pod yield in relay cropping corresponding to the yield in traditional sowing method. The highest green pod yield (3333 kg/ha) was obtained from Natore local and this was statistically at par with that of Jhikorgacha local (3234 kg/ha) might be attributed by the higher number of pod/plant as well as plant population/m2 in the relay cropping system. The lowest green pod yield (1745 kg/ha) was obtained from BARI motorshuti-1 under traditional method of sowing. Due to lower number of pod/plant all varieties produced lower green pod yield in spite of higher plant population/m2 in the traditional sowing method. Natore local motorshuti produced the highest fodder yield (4055 kg/ha) under relay cropping system which was significantly different from the others and BARI motoroshuti-1 produced the lowest (2220 kg/ha) under traditional sowing method. The maximum gross return (Tk 1,74,760 /ha) was obtained from the variety Natore local followed by Jhikorgacha local (Tk 1, 69, 218 /ha) in relay cropping system. Similar trends were found in case of gross margin.Item STUDY ON DIFFERENT WEED MANAGEMENT APPROACHES IN T. AMAN RICE IN SYLHET REGION(Dept. of Agronomy and Haor Agriculture, 2013-12) ISLAM, KAMRULAn experiment was conducted in the farmer’s field of Mr Ripon Baddi, in the village of Hasimpur, Jalalpur union in the South Surma Upazila, Sylhet to find out the effective weed management practices in Transplanted Aman rice. There were 7 (seven) treatments namely two commercially available herbicides and their combination, hand weeding, farmer’s practices, weed free control, and weedy control were included. The variety BR 11 was transplanted on August, 09, 2013 and harvested on November 12, 2013. Nine weed species were recorded in this trial. Among these three were board-leaved, four were grasses and the rest were sedges. The most prominent weeds in the experiment were Panicum repens. Digitaria sangunalis, Leersia hexandra, Fimbristylis milieaceae etc. It was found that the important values and relative density among the nine weed species, Panicum repens was found higher at both 25 and 50 DAT where the lowest importance value and relative density was observed in case of Monochoria vaginalis. The highest weed population (79.63 m- ) was found in T7 treatment (weedy cheek) and the lowest weed population (18.82) was found in T3 2 at 25 DAT and no weed was found in weed free treated (T6) plots. Yield contributing characters like plant height, number of effective tillers per hill, panicle length and number of grain per panicle were significantly affected by different weed management approaches. The management approaches treatment T3 (Rifit at 7 DAT+ Gashmara at 14 DAT) produced the tallest plant ((145.4 cm), highest number of effective tillers hill (13.30), highest panicle length, highest number of grain per panicle and higher grain yield (5.33 t ha -1 ) in the treatment T3 (Rifit + Gashmara). Due to effective weed control was done, the ultimate reflection of this treatment was appeared and that’s why the highest grain yield (5.33 t ha -1 ) was recorded. Harvest index was differed significantly with different treatment where T3 (Rifit + Gashmara) have the highest index (39.62) which was at par with all the treatments except weedy cheek (T7). The highest net profit from rice cultivation was in treatment T3 which was almost double from all the treatments except T7 and the lowest profit was in no -1 weeding plot which was about four to five times lower than the treatment T3. The partial budget analysis also showed that treatment T3 (i.e. herbicide application two times) maximized the profit and the highest (1.85) benefit-cost ratio (BCR). It may concluded that herbicidal treatments were profitable than any other treatments. So use of herbicides may be an alternative in controlling weeds more easily and cheaply when there is labor crisis.Item EFFECT OF SULPHUR AND LIQUID FERTILIZER ON YIELD AND YIELD COMPONENTS OF MUSTARD VAR. BINASARISHA-4(Dept. of Agronomy and Haor Agriculture, 2013-12) BEGUM, SHAHINAAn experiment was carried out to investigate the effect of sulphur and foliar application of liquid fertilizer ‘Magic growth’ on the yield and yield components of mustard var. Binasarisha-4 at a farmer’s field of South Surma Upazila of Sylhet district from October, 2012 to February, 2013. There were five treatments- T0 = No sulphur (control), T1 = 10 kg S ha -1 + liquid fertilizer as super imposed and T4 = No fertilizer except foliar application of liquid fertilizer. The source of sulphur was gypsum and recommended dose of NPKZnB were applied in all plots except T4. The unit plot size was 4 m x 2.5 m, laid out in a randomized complete block design with three replications. Data on yield and yield contributing characters were recorded at harvest and statistically analyzed. Results of the experiment showed that levels of S fertilization significantly influenced some plant and yield parameters and increased the number of siliqua plant , T2 = 20 kg S ha -1 , T3 = 40 kg S ha -1 and also 1000 seed weight. However, S @ 20 kg ha -1 , seeds siliqua -1 (T2) in maximum cases showed the best performances which resulted in the highest yield (1883 kg ha -1 ). The highest straw yield and total dry matter production were both obtained from 40 kg S ha -1 + liquid fertilizer. Although straw yield and total dry matter production progressively increased with higher levels of S up to 40 kg ha -1 -1 . The lowest plant parameters, least seed and straw yields and the lowest total dry matter were found in the treatment no fertilizer + foliar application of liquid fertilizer. but seed yield increased up to S rate of 20 kg ha -1Item EFFECT OF RELAY AND TRADITIONAL METHODS OF SOWING ON THE GROWTH AND YIELD OF LENTIL VARIETIES IN LENTIL-FALLOW-T. AMAN RICE PATTERN(Dept. of Agronomy and Haor Agriculture, 2013-12) MANDAL, PALASHAn experiment was conducted at the farmer’s field of village Bodikona, Upazila-South Surma in Sylhet district during the period from November 2012 to March 2013 to know the performance of lentil varieties viz. BARI masur-3, BARI masur-4, BARI masur-6 and BARI masur-7 under traditional and relay sowing methods with T. aman rice. Design of the experiment was split plot assigning sowing methods in the main plots and varieties in the sub-plots. Plant characters studied in the experiment were days to 50% flowering, days to maturity, plant population m , plant height, number of branch plant -2 , 100-seed weight, seed and straw yields and harvest index. The results revealed that sowing methods produced significant effect on days to 50% flowering, days to maturity, plant population m -1 , number of pod plant -1 , number of seed pod -1 , number of pod plant -2 , number of branch plant -1 , seed yield and straw yield. Significantly lower seed yield was obtained from relay sowing than traditional method mainly because of lower plant population m -1 , number of seed pod -1 , number of branch plant -2 and seed pod -1 and pod plant -1 . All characters except plant height, number of branch plant -1 differed significantly among the varieties. The variety BARI masur-7 produced the highest seed yield (541.6 kg ha -1 and 100-seed weight along with moderate plant population m -1 ) which was mainly contributed by the highest number of pod plant -1 . Interaction of sowing method and variety also exhibited significant effect on all characters except number of branch plant -2 and seed pod -1 , pod plant -1 ) followed by BARI masur-4 (575.2 kg ha -1 . Variety BARI masur-7 produced the highest seed yield (614.8 kg ha -1 ) in the traditional method of sowing attributed by the higher plant population m -1 and 100-seed weight. These two varieties performed better in both the sowing methods. BARI masur-7 gave maximum gross margin (Tk. 7524 ha -2 , number of pod plant -1 ) in relay method which was followed by gross margin (Tk. 5878 ha -1 -1 ) of the same variety in traditional method.
