Item A STUDY ON PROFITABILITY ANALYSIS OF BORO RICE CULTIVATION IN SOME SELECTED AREA OF LAXMIPUR DISTRICT(DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURAL STATISTICS, 2020) WOARUM, MAISHA MUNABangladesh is an agro based country with an area of 148,460 square kilometers and a population about 162 million. Majority of the population of the country involves in agriculture. The study was undertaken to assess the profitability of Boro rice. A total of 80 farmers were selected by simple random sampling from the villages of Ramganj, Raipur and Ramgati upazila of Laxmipur district. Tabular technique and statistical analysis were done to achieve objectives. The Cobb-Douglas production function was used in this study to determine the effects of effects of individual inputs on Boro rice production. The major findings of the study were that the cultivation ofBoro rice was profitable from the view point of farmers. The total return per hectare 111090.35 Tk. Gross Cost 78202.24 Tk. Total variable cost was 54451.90 Tk. Total fixed cost was 23750 Tk. Net return was 32888.11 Tk. The undiscounted BCR was 1.42. It is also observed that per hectare net returns were influenced by the factors included in model namely: human labor, insecticides, and irrigation. These factors were responsible for influencing per hectare net returns for Boro rice production. There were also some constrains and problems facing by the farmers during the production process as well as marketing of Boro rice. High price of inputs, high cost of irrigation, lack of quality seeds, lack of scientific knowledge about cultivation, inadequate extension service, lack of operating capital, natural calamities, low output price, high cost of transportations etc. were common problems faced by farmers. It can be concluded that the farmers should be encouraged to grow more Boro rice as a means of increasing their income. More HYV ofBoro rice should be cultivated in the study area.Item PROFITABILITY AND TECHNICAL EFFICIENCY ANALYSIS OF POTATO PRODUCTION IN SOME SELECTED AREAS OF BOGURA DISTRICT IN BANGLADESH(DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURAL STATISTICS, SHER-E-BANGLA AGRICULTURAL UNIVERSITY, SHER-E-BANGLA NAGAR, DHAKA -1207, 2020-06) JUTHY, NUSRAT FATEMAPotato is third largest food crop in Bangladesh by tonnage of production. Its acreage and production are also increasing in day after day. This study was accomplished to examine the profitability and technical efficiency of potato cultivation in Bogura district of Bangladesh. A total of 60 cultivators were selected from three upazilas of Bogura district. Data were collected through farm survey by using a suitable pretested questionnaire in February to March, 2018. Descriptive statistics and problems faced index (PFI) were used to attain the objectives. Average gross return, gross margin and net return were found Tk 237236, Tk. 77438 and Tk 55944 respectively. Benefit cost ratio was found 1.31. And there we evaluated that the Log likelihood is 41.3964 and Standard deviation is 0.135. Land preparation, human labour, seed, fertilizer, insecticides, irrigations and harvesting cost were the key factors of potato production. The study identified some major post-harvest problems, unavailability of quality seed, storage problem, holding capacity problem, lower market price, transportation problem, lack of public procurement and load shedding. The potato cultivators opined that potato production would be economically viable if quality seeds with affordable price, processing facilities, storage facilities, marketing facilities, fertilizer or insecticides with reasonable price are ensured.Item ECONOMIC ANALYSIS OF BORO RICE CULTIVATION OF BURICHANG UPAZILLA OF CUMILLA DISTRICT IN BANGLADESH(DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURAL STATISTICS, SHER-E-BANGLA AGRICULTURAL UNIVERSITY, DHAKA -1207, 2020-06) KHAN, HALEMAThis study was conducted to assess the economic analysis of Boro rice production. In total 60 farmers were selected randomly from three villages namely Ghobindopur, Jatrapur and Nowapara under Burichang Upazila in Cumilla district of Bangladesh. Tabular technique and statistical analysis were done to achieve the objectives of the study. The Cobb-Douglas production function was used in this study to determine the effects of individual inputs on boro rice. Per hectare gross cost of Boro farmers was Tk99052.62669 and per hectare gross return was Tk139556.63.It was observed that per hectare net return was Tk. 40504.01.The undiscounted BCR were 1.41.The results indicated that Boro production was profitable .It was also evident from the study that per hectare net returns were influenced by most of the factors included in model namely: human labor, seed, fertilizer and manure, insecticides and pesticides, power tiller, and irrigation. These factors were directly or jointly responsible for influencing per hectare net returns for boro rice production. The study also showed that farmers producing boro rice faced some problems, mainly related to production and marketing of the crops.Item PROFITABILITY ANALYSIS AND DIFFERENT ASPECTS OF JUTE CULTIVATORS IN JAMALPUR DISTRICT(DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURAL STATISTICS, SHER-E-BANGLA AGRICULTURAL UNIVERSITY, DHAKA -1207, 2020-06) BRISTY, ASHFIA NISHAJute Known as the ‘Golden Fiber’, was one of the major cash crops of Bangladesh. The study aims to assess profitability and technical efficiency of Jute. Hundred cultivars of Jute from three upazila namely Islampur, Jamalpur sadar and Melandaha under Jamalpur district were selected for study purpose. A structured questionnaire was constructed for data collection. The results are as descriptive statistics and interpreted based on farmer feedbacks. Findings include that total cost Tk. 62378.51 per hectare, the gross return, gross margin and net return were found to be Tk. 92625, Tk. 50636.00 and Tk. 30246.50 respectively per hectare. Benefit Cost Ratio (BCR) was found to be 1.48 which implies that one-taka investment in Jute production generated Tk. 1.48 in our study. The regression coefficients of Seed cost (X 2 ) and Irrigation cost (X 4 ) and Insecticide (X 5 ) were negative but the coefficient of Human labor (X 1 ), Total fertilizer cost (X 3 ), Insecticide cost (X 4 ) was found negative. In the technical inefficiency effect model experience, training, jute retting technology and Farm size have expected (negative) coefficients. The coefficients of farmer’s age and education is positive meaning that these factors have no impact on the technical inefficiency. That is, these factors do not reduce or increase technical inefficiency of producing Jute. Average estimated technical efficiencies for Jute are 92 percent which indicate that Jute production could be increased by 08 per cent with the same level of inputs without incurring any further cost. Increase of only managerial skills result in a substantial increase of output for Jute. Farmers faced a lot of problems in producing Jute. The problems were social and cultural, financial and technical. Lack of quality seed was one of the most important limitations of producing Jute in the study area. Lack of operating capital, high price of quality seed, high cost of irrigation water, shortage of human labor and lack of quality tillage were the major problems faced by farmers. These are the major constraints for the producers of Jute in the study area. Public and private initiatives should be taken to reduce or eliminate these problems for the sake of better production of Jute.Item INFLUENCE OF THE ICT ADVANCEMENT ON RURAL FARMERS: AN EXPLORATORY STUDY ON BARISHAL DIVISION OF BANGLADESH(DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURAL STATISTICS, SHER-E-BANGLA AGRICULTURAL UNIVERSITY, DHAKA, BANGLADESH, 2020-06) HOWLADER, MD. AL-EMRANAgricultural development cannot be understood without the use of modern technologies like Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs). The recent developments in ICTs offer a unique opportunity to bring the production enhancing tools and technologies to the growers with much cost-effective manner. Worldwide, many studies were published on the role of application of ICTs in agricultural production. However, only a few studies were carried out to know the impact of ICT based service delivery system on agricultural production aspects in Bangladesh. Therefore, an attempt has been made to find the factors of ICTs on agricultural production, especially in the food crops, vegetables, fisheries and cattles. Using a randomized survey with a questionnaire, interviews and focus group discussion, a study was carried out with a sample of 100 farmers from a population comprises farmers all over the country. The findings from the study after counterfactual analysis and difference in differences analysis as well showed that with the application, advancement and use of ICTs, agricultural production was accelerated which was evident from the degree of increase of ICT. It had proved that the agricultural production from the ICT based service area has increased more than that of non-ICT based area. The study also showed that farmers producing boro rice faced some problems, mainly related to production and marketing of the crops.Item A PRODUCTIVITY ANALYSIS WITH COMPARISON ON BORO RICE AND JUTE PRODUCTION IN SHIBCHAR UPAZILLA OF MADARIPUR DISTRICT(DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURAL STATISTICS, SHER-E-BANGLA AGRICULTURAL UNIVERSITY, DHAKA, BANGLADESH, 2020-06) NASRIN, KHALEDAThe profitability of boro rice and jute production was explained in this research. The Shibchar upazila of Madaripur was selected as study area. Total 60 farmers, 30 boro rice farmers and 30 jute farmers were randomly selected for the present study. The data were collected during March-April 2020, by using a structured questionnaire. Cobb-Douglas production function was used for analyzing data. The major findings of the study were that the cultivation of boro rice and jute was profitable from the view point of farmers. The estimated average cost of boro rice production was Tk 216103.48 per hectare and jute production was Tk 142991.39 per hectare. The gross return of boro rice and jute per hectare were Tk 235698.17 and Tk 161608.83 respectively. The estimated gross margin of boro rice was Tk 52457.85 per hectare, jute was Tk 50287.26 per hectare, net return of boro rice and jute productions per hectare were Tk 19594.69 and Tk 18617.44 respectively. The undiscounted Benefit Cost Ratio (BCR) of boro rice production was 1.09 and jute production 1.13. In the study, it was observed that jute production was more profitable than boro rice production of the study area. It was also evident from the study that per hectare net return was significantly influenced by human labor (0.2872***), power tiller (0.1490**), fertilizer cost (0.5253***) for boro rice. In the case of jute production, per hectare net return was significantly influenced by human labor (0.3441***), power tiller (-0.0755**), fertilizer (0.3791**), manure cost (0.0482**). The research identified and ranked some of the issues that boro rice and jute growers faced. High input costs, a labor scarcity and a high pay rate, a lack of storage facilities, a lack of capital, insect attacks, and natural disasters were all the major issues. Various recommendations were made in this research for improving the current production situation, with the goal of increasing boro rice and jute yields.Item SMOKING BEHAVIOURS, SELF-APPRECIATIONS AND THE ROLE OF MILIEU IN PREDICTING CIGARETTE USE AMONG SAU STUDENTS(DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURAL STATISTICS, SHER-E-BANGLA AGRICULTURAL UNIVERSITY, DHAKA, BANGLADESH, 2020-06) AWAL, MD. ABDULSmoking is the most widely recognized method for expanding tobacco and tobacco is the most commonly known substance smoked. In Bangladesh, the number of tobacco smokers are increasing rapidly because of the availability of cheap tobacco products, lack of strong tobacco control regulations, and weak enforcement of existing regulations. University students constitute a high risk group for engaging in risky behaviors, such as smoking and illicit substance use. These students are at high risk of initiating and continuing smoking as they are likely to be exposed to peers who smoke. At the same time, they face social, emotional, and educational challenges when they enter the university settings. This thesis is based on the premise that a broader understanding of the behaviors and self- perceptions of university students with respect to tobacco use. It is also based on the premise that investigation into the role of social connectedness in predicting student smoking behaviors. Development of the Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University Tobacco Use Survey was guided by a comprehensive review of previous empirical and theoretical work in this area as well as by previously developed instruments. All analysis for this study were conducted using SPSS Version 26. The findings of our study reveal that tobacco smoking is initiated by students during the early adolescent years and continues throughout the university years. The demographic analysis of the study shows there only 17.55% nonsmoker exists the rest of them are smoker, of which 69.78% students were daily smokers, 9.97% students were occasional smokers and 2.7% students were experimental smokers. The study results also found that an estimated 9.91% made a negative change in their self-perceived smoking status, and 4.33% made a positive change in their self-perceived smoking status. The results urge policy makers to initiate anti-smoking programs to prevent the smoking habit and also necessary to create a help line for smokers to quit smoking. It is also recommended to conduct anti-smoking campaign among the parents and increase their awareness level.Item PROFITABILITY AND RESOURCE USE EFFICIENCY OF BORO RICE BRRI DHAN-28 PRODUCTION IN SOME SELECTED AREAS OF CHUADANGA DISTRICT IN BANGLADESH(DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURAL STATISTICS, SHER-E-BANGLA AGRICULTURAL UNIVERSITY, DHAKA, BANGLADESH, 2020-06) ISLAM, MD. RAFIKULBangladesh is predominantly an agrarian country where the contribution of agriculture intotal GDP is 13.74% and 40.6% people are directly involved with agriculture. Due to its verfertile land and favorable weather, varieties of crop grow abundantly in this country. It habeen persistently contributing to higher rice production in last successive years. Bangladesh has acquired third position of producing rice over the world in 2020. My present study wadesigned to measure the profitability and resource use efficiency of boro rice production insome selected areas of four villages named Morevanga, Keshobpur, Sheikhpara and Hatboalia under three unions of Alamdanga Upazilla in Chuadanga district. Primary datwere collected randomly from selected total 60 farmers from the study areas. Both tabulaand functional analyses were applied in this study. The major findings of the study reveal that boro production is profitable. Total cost of production of boro was Tk.141449.10 per hectareGross return of boro was Tk. 171857.00 per hectare and net returns of boro was Tk. 30407.90per hectare. Benefit Cost Ratio (BCR) was found to be 1.21 which implies that one-takainvestment in boro production will be generated Tk.1.21. The coefficients of parameters likeFertilizer, Insecticide and Human labor were found positive and significant at 5, 5 and percent level of significant respectively where land preparation was negative at 5 percentlevel of significant. The other variables seed and irrigation coefficient were positive butinsignificant. The resource use efficiency of the samples seed (r=2.091) was onlunderutilized. The other variables as insecticides (0.3110), fertilizer (0.136), irrigation 0.346) and human labor (0.0832) were over utilized and the land preparation cost waindiscriminately over utilized. On that farm area most of the variables were over utilizewhich implied that they need to utilize the variables properly with reducing cost behind it forachieving the highly gross return. The study revealed that a considerable improvement took place to increase household income of the farmers in the study area and to improve thesocioeconomic conditions with the introduction of large-scale commercial boro production.The study also identified some problems and constraints faced by the boro farmers andsuggested some recommendations to improve the present production situation so that yield of boro would possibly be increased.
