(Department of Genetics and Plant Breeding, Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka-1207, 2013-12) HOSSAIN, MD. SHAJIEDUR
The experiment was conducted with 34 local rice genotypes with one check varieties at the Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University experimental field to study characterization and genetic diversity of 35 local rice genotypes and to find out the association among the genetic characteristics. Regarding mean performance, the genotype G4 took the longest period for first flowering is (115) followed by genotype 0-35 (114) and the genotype 0-12 had the minimum days for first flowering is (99). The highest number of tilled grain per panicle was recorded in genotype 0-10 was (144.33). The highest number of effective tiller (10.33) was recorded in genotype 0-IS. The highest 1000 grain weight (26.00) was recorded in the genotype 0-15. The highest grain yield per hill was produced by genotype 0-24 (35.90g). The highest &g was fbund for number of root hair (103415.40) and the lowest magnitude of &g was observed in number of primary branches per panicle (1.97). The highest a2p was found for number of root hair (109410.31) and the lowest magnitude of &p was observed in number of primary branches per panicle (2.61). High GCV and PCV for number of effective tiller, root weight, number of root hair and grain yield per hill (g) indicated that selection of these traits would be effective. Correlation of Grain yield per hill was found to be highly significant and positive for number of root hair, days to flowering and plant height at both genotypic and phenotypic level and negatively significant for number of secondary branches per panicle at both level. Significant positive correlation of grain yield per hill with number of root hair, days to flowering and plant height implied that selection for these characters would lead to simultaneous improvement of grain yield in rice. Days to flowering had maximum direct effect (0.719) on yield followed by number of effective tiller (0.635). number of unfilled grain per panicle (0.544). Genotypes were grouped into five different clusters. PCA showed the highest inter-cluster distance was observed between the cluster I!and V (46.71) followed by Ill and V (46.40) and IV and V (45.43). Genotypes from these three clusters may be involved in hybridization as wide genetic variations exist among the groups. Cluster IV exhibited the highest intra-cluster distance (38.36), while the lowest distance was observed in cluster V (23.09).

COMBINING ABILITY AND HETEROSIS IN SHORT DURATED BORO RICE THROUGH AUS X BORO CROSSING
(Department of Genetics and Plant Breeding, Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka-1207, 2013-12) HASAN, MD. ABID
This research work was carried out by using number of F2 population of some intervarietal crosses of the species Oryza sdiliva in the experimental farm. Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University (SAU). Dhaka during October 2011 to April 2012 for estimating the mean performance, combining ability (General and Specific) and residual heterosis. Combining ability analysis revealed significant general and specific combining ability for most of the traits studied indicating involvement of both additive and non-additive gene action in the inheritance of yield and yield contributing characters. Significant, desirable and highest SCA effect was observed for days to maturity in cross combination BR2I x BR24 which might be selected as the best specific combiner for earliness. Highest, significant desirable SCA effects was observed for yield and most of the yield contributing characters in cross combination BR26 x BRRI Dhan29 which might be selected as best specific cross combination followcd by BRRI Dhan28 x BRRI Dhan29, BR26 x BRRI Dhan36 and BR24 x 13R26 for yield and yield contributing characters. These cross combinations also showed heterosis and therefore these cross combinations may be reviewed fl.u-ther for earliness and yield performance. Mean performance revealed that, BR 21 x BRRI Dhan36 required minimum days to flowering and maturity with reasonable yield followed by BR 24 x BRRI Dhan 36. So, these two cross combination could be selected for short duration and high yielding variety development.

(Department of Genetics and Plant Breeding, Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka-1207, 2013-12) SARWAR, GOLAM
The experiment was conducted with forty two genotypes of rice at the experimental farm of Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, l)haka during the period of JulyDecember. 2013 to estimate the genetic variability, correlation, path and diversity among the genotypes. The experiment was conducted using Randomized Complete Block Design with three replications. All the genotypes varied significantly with each other for all the studied characters indicated the presence of considerably variations among the genotypes studied. The PCV values were higher than the respective CCV values for all the characters under study except unfilled grains per panicle indicating that the characters were less influenced by the environment. Total tillers per plant effective tillers per plant tilled grains per panicle, unfilled grains per panicle and yield per plant showed high heritability along with high genetic advance as percentage of mean were normally more helpful in predicting the genetic gain under selection. From the correlation and path analysis it was revealed that total tillers per plant cflèctive tillers per plant and days to maturity showed significantly positive gcnotypic correlation with yield as well as employed positive direct effect on yield suggesting that the selection for these traits would helpful for the improvement of yield per plant. As PCA, D2 and clusters analysis the genotypes were grouped into five diflèrent clusters. Clusters IV had the maximum fourteen and cluster Ill had the minimum three genotypes. The highest inter-cluster distance was observed betwecn II and Ill and the lowest was observed between IV and V. The highest and lowest intra-cluster distance was observed in Ill and IV respectively. Genotypes included in cluster V were important for total tillers per plant, eflbctive tillers per plant days to 50% flowering and thousand grains weight cluster III were important for filled grains per panicle and unfilled grains per panicle. cluster IV were for plant height and yield per plant Considering the diversity pattern and other agronomic performances, the genotypes Special from AL-29. GENETIC VARIABILITY FOR MORPHO-AGRONOMIC AND NUTRITIONAL TRAITS IN TOMATO (Solanum lycopersicum L.)
(Department of Genetics and Plant Breeding, Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka-1207, 2013-12) FIMA, INEEN NAYEEM
A field experiment was conducted at the experimental field of Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka. during November 2012 to April 2013. Nineteen genotypes of tomato (Solwzu'n Ivopersicun, L.) were studied in the present study. The objectives of the study were diversity and biochemical analysis of tomato to assess the magnitude of genetic divergence in genotypes, association among the characters and their contribution to yield and quality. The analysis of variance indicated significantly higher amount of variability among the genotypes for all the characters. Considering genetic parameters high genotypic co-efficient of variation (GCV) was observed for average fruit weight, fruit per cluster, fruit per plant and fruit yield per plant whereas days to first flowering, days to 50% flowering and days to maturity showed low CCV. High heritability with high genetic advance in percent of mean was observed for number of fruits per cluster, number of fruits per plant, average fruit weight and fruit yield per plant indicating that these traits were under additive gene control and selection for genetic improvement for these traits would be effective. The results obtained, showed that fruit yield per plant had high positive significant relation with fruit weight, but high negative significant relation with days to first flowering, days to maturity, number of fruit per clusters and number of fruit per plant. Days to 50% flowering, number of branches per plant, fruit weight and fruit length had high positively direct effect on yield of tomato. So, these are found to be important characters and could be used on direct selection for yield. Considering all the characters, 04, 06. (39, G18 and Gig can be selected for future breeding program. Lycopene content of samples from genotype C2, G4 (is, Gs and Gig showed very high lycopene content at both absorbance 472 nm and 502 nm. 01 and genotype have very high Vitamin C content. Cc and Gg genotypes having high brix content indicated that they could be recommending to the farmers for cultivation and could be used for future breeding program to obtain healthy and for protective tomatoes against diseases

GENETIC VARIATION IN SOURCE-SINK RELATED TRAITS IN WHEAT (Triticum aestivum L.)
(Department of Genetics and Plant Breeding, Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka-1207, 2013-12) BEGUM, MOMOTAZ
Characterization of 10 popular winter wheat varieties released by BAR!was done by studying variability, heritability, correlation and path co-efficient analysis. Source sink relationship was the main focus, so all the varieties were evaluated for source characters such as dry weight of green leaf, dry weight of stem and leaf sheath at 50% booting stage, tiller number per square meter, LAI, LAR, vegetative period and grain filling period. Side by side, sink characters like dry weight of particle at 50% booting stage, number of grains per spike. 1000 grain weight and grain yield per sq. meter were also studied. The experiment was conducted in randomized block design with three replications in the cxperimcntal field of Shcr-e-l3angla Agricultural University during the wheat growing season of 2012-2013. Significant variations were observed among all the varieties for all the character studied. The variety Gourav, Sonalika, BARI-26. BARI-25 and BARI-23 showed higher yield. The highest genotypic and phenotypic coefficient of variation was observed for dry weight of green leaf and dry weight of stem and leaf sheath at 50% booting stage. Vegetative period showed the lowest estimation of variation. All the characters were highly heritable, among them dry weight of panicle. leaf area ratio, total dry matter and grain yield coincided high genetic advance (5%). Leaf area ratio, total dry matter and dry weight of leaf sheath at 50% booting stage coherently showed high genetic advance (% mean) but grain yield did not. Correlation study indicated that grain yield had significant positive genotypic relation with dry weight of panicic at 50% booting stage and 1000 grain weight. In connasc, leaf area ratio at 50% booting stage showed significant negative relation with grain yield. Through path coefficient analysis it was thrther evident that, number of tillers per sq. meter had the highest direct positive effect on yield but due to indircct negative effect of LAID (Leaf Area Index at 50% Booting stage), LAR13 (Leaf Area Ratio at 50% Booting stage) and grain filling period on this trait, the correlation became positive but very weak. In coherence of the highest negative correlation coefficient, Leaf area ratio at 50% booting stage exerted the highest direct negative effect on yield. Thousand grain weight and number of grain per spike contributed to yield by both direct and indirect means.

(Department of Genetics and Plant Breeding, Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka-1207, 2013-12) HALDER, TANUSHREE
The variability study was assessed in eleven advanced lines of Brassica rapa obtained through F: generation of different inter-varietal crosses and three popular check varieties at the experiment field of Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University (SAU). Dhaka during November 2013 to February 2014 considering twelve yield contributing characters. To evaluate the advanced lines, magnitude of variations in the characters, heritability, genetic advance, correlation and direct and indirect effect of different characters on yield per hectare were taken under analysis. The characters showed significant variations among the genotypes. Genotypic variance was lower than the phenotypic variance for every character. Minimum difference between phenotypic and genotypic variance was seen in number of primary branches per plant, length of silique. thousand seed weight and seeds per silique. days to 50% flowering and days to 80% flowering. High heritability with moderate genetic advance and genetic advance in mean percentage was observed in days to 50% flowering and days to 80% flowering while moderate heritability with high genetic advance and genetic advance in mean percentage was seen in siliquae per plant and yield per hectare. Days to 80% flowering, number of primary branches per plant and number of seeds per silique showed significant positive direct association with the yield per hectare. Direct positive effect on yield per hectare was found in days to 50% flowering. days to 80% flowering, plant height and number of secondary branches per plant through path co-efficient analysis. Through this variability analysis two advanced lines named SAUSR 08 and SAUSR 14 were selected based on their better performances over the check varieties in respect of days to maturity and yield per hectare for further multi-locational trail to release as a new variety.

(Department of Genetics and Plant Breeding, Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka-1207, 2013-06) BEGUM, MST. SHAILA
A field experiment was conducted during December, 2011 to April. 2012 to study the genetic variability, correlation, path coefficient analysis and genetic diversity for quantitative traits in soybean ((ilycine max (L.) Merrill ) with 28 genotypes in randomized complete block design with three replications. The genotypes were placed in a field experiment conducted at the research farm of Shcr-e-Bangla Agricultural University. Dhaka- 1207. Analysis of variance for each trait showed significant differences among the genotypes. Phenotypic coefficients of variation (PCV) was close to genotypie coefficients of variation ((;CV) for all the characters except pod length and seeds per pod indicating that environment had influence on the expression of these characters. High heritability associated with high genetic advance percent of mean was observed for plant height, number of branches per plant, pods per plant, seeds per plant and hundred seed weight which indicated that selection for these characters would be effective. Seed yield per plant had highly significant positive genotypic and phenotypic association with plant height, branches per plant, pods per plant, pod length, seeds per pod, seeds per plant and hundred seed weight revealing that selection based on these traits would ultimately improve the seed yield. Path coefficient analysis revealed that seeds per plant and hundred seed weight had the highest positive direct effect on seed. Hence, thrust has to be given for these characters in future breeding programme to improve the yield in soybean. Multivariate analysis based on II characters indicated that the 28 genotypes were grouped into five distant clusters. The maximum contribution of characters towards diversity was observed by days to first flowering, number of pods per plant and seeds per pod. Thus, these traits may be given high emphasis while selecting the lines for hybridization. The inter cluster distance was maximum between cluster II and cluster IV. The highest intra cluster distance was found in cluster V. From the results it can be concluded that the following genotypes viz., F-85-1 1347 (04). LG-92P-12-18 (08). RI4174-75 (023) and MTD45 I (G28) were identified as potential genotypes for higher seed yield in soybean.

(Department of Genetics and Plant Breeding, Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka-1207, 2013-06) SAHA, KRISNA CHANDRA
A field experiment was conducted during November 2011 to March 2012 to study the multivariate analysis for yield and its contributing traits in garden pea (PLvum sativum) with 46 genotypes in Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with three replications. The genotypes were placed in a field experiment conducted at the research farm of Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University. Dhaka- 1207. Analysis of variance for each trait showed significant differences among the genotypes. Phenotypic coefficients of variation (PC\') was also close to genolypie coefficients of variation (GCV) for all the characters indicating that environment had influence on the expression of these characters. High heritability associated with high genetic advance percent of mean was observed for branch per plant and pod length which indicated that selection fbr these characters would be effective. Seed yield per plant had highly significant positive genotypic and phenotypic association with branch per plant, and hundred seed weight revealed that selection based on these traits would ultimately improve the seed yield. Path coefficient analysis revealed that branch per plant and hundred seed weight had the highest positive direct effect on seed. Hence, thrust has to be given for these characters in fiuture breeding programme to improve the yield in garden pea. Multivariate analysis based on 10 agronomic characters indicated that the 46 genotypes were grouped into live distant clusters. The maxinuim contribution of characters towards diversity was observed by days to first flowering, days of 50% flowering, plant height and branches per plant. Thus, these traits may be given high emphasis while selecting the lines for hybridization. The inter cluster distance was maximum between cluster Ill and cluster V. The highest intra-cluster distance was found in cluster IlL From the results it can be concluded that the following genotypes viz.. G17 (BD-4153), G9 (BD-4144). G25 (13D-4165), 029 (BD-4169). 034 (BD-4175). G36 (BD-4177). G44 (BD-7217) were identified as potential genotypes lbr higher seed yield in garden pea.
