Item Irrigation water distribution process in spatially stratified areas of the Ganges-Kobadak project of Bangladesh(Department of Water Resources Engineering (WRE), BUET, 1978-07) A.S.M. Imdadul Islam; Arbhabhirama, AnatA study was conducted in the Ganges-Kobadak (G-K) irrigation project of Bangladesh during the ,Kharif-I (dry) season of 1978. Different aspects of water use for lowland rice and the corresponding irrigation water supply in the selected areas of the project were studied. , Results of the study revealed that seepage and percolation 'losses varied from 3.88 to 6.96 mm/day and the net water use i.e. evapotranspiration plus seepage and percolation ranged from 7.82 to 10.90 mm/day in different areas. Water supplied through the canals was found to be much more than the actual requirement and comparatively higher water supply was observed at the upstream areas. Also, no definite schedule.of water supply was found to exist in the system. High water use efficiency was found at the downstream areas compared to the upstream areas.indicating excessive loss of the supplied water at the upstream areas. On the other hand, the water adequacy was observed to be higher in 'the -areas nearer to the source of water.Item Determination of deep tubewell spacing using aquifer characteristics and irrigation requirement(Department of Water Resources Engineering, BUET, 1977-08) Jahir Uddin Chowdhury, A. Discharge, coefficient of tr~nsmissibility. stor~ge coefficient, time of pumping, static lift and peak monthly irrigation water requirement have been used as variable parameters. The effect of size and unit weight of materials in bank protection was studied in laboratory in a straight channel using cubical blocks made of sand-cement morter and brick. Saturated sand-cement bJ.ock had a specific gravity of 2.68 resembleming that of stone and brick blocks had a specific gravity of 2.18. Critical velocity at faiJ.ure of the blocks used as bank protective material was determined on four different side slopes. The volume of blocks was found to vary with the velocity at failure as the 6th and 7th power for sand-cement blocks and brick blocks respectively. The weight of blo.cks was found to vary with the velocity at failure as the 4.75th and 5.5th power for sand cement blocks and brick blocks respectively. It was observed that interlocking of the blocks and the waves in the channel are also major factors in the determination of proper size. of bank protective materials. Both constant discharge and variable discharge conditions were considered and unsteady ground water flow equations were solved with the help of an IBM 360 digital computer. Comparison was made between spacing of wells subjected to mutual interference and spacing of wells without interference. Discharge coefficient of transmissibility, storage coefficient, time of pumping, static lift and peak monthly irrigation water requirement has been used as variable parameters. The storage coefficient should be the determining factor in selecting deep tube well spacing when aquifer characteristics are considered. Some amount of mutual interference is allowable in selecting deep tube well spacing and non-interference spacing is not always practicable. It is not important to consider the variability of well discharge due to increase in drawdown at the well with time. A design chart has been developed for the selection of deep tube well spacing considering aquifer characteristics and irrigation water requirement, in square 'grid tube well layout.
