The effect of size and unit weight of materials in bank protection was studied in laboratory in a straight channel using cubical blocks made of sand-cement morter and brick. Saturated sand-cement bJ.ock had a specific gravity of 2.68 resembleming that of stone and brick blocks had a specific gravity of 2.18. Critical velocity at faiJ.ure of the blocks used as bank protective material was determined on four different side slopes. The volume of blocks was found to vary with the velocity at failure as the 6th and 7th power for sand-cement blocks and brick blocks respectively. The weight of blo.cks was found to vary with the velocity at failure as the 4.75th and 5.5th power for sand cement blocks and brick blocks respectively. It was observed that interlocking of the blocks and the waves in the channel are also major factors in the determination of proper size. of bank protective materials. It was also concluded that on a flatter side slope blocks of much less weight are required.Item Determination of deep tubewell spacing using aquifer characteristics an irrigation requirement(Department of Water Resources Engineering, 1977-08) A.K.M. Jahir Uddin Chowdhury; Khan, H.R.Relationship between deep tube well spacing in square grid tube well layout ?nd aquifer characteristics has been studied using unsteady ground water flow equations. Both constant discharge and variable discharge conditions were considered and unsteady ground water flow equations were solved with the help of an IBM 360 digital computer. Comparison was made between spacing of wells subjected to mutual interference and spacing of wells without interference. Discharge coefficient of transmissibility, storage coefficient, time of pumping, static lift and peak monthly irrigation water requirement has been used as variable parameters. The storage coefficient should be the determining factor in selecting deep tube well spacing when aquifer characteristics are considered. Some amount of mutual interference is allowable in selecting deep tube well spacing and non-interference spacing is not always practicable. It is not important to consider the variability of well discharge due to increase in drawdown at the well with time. Imdadul Islam; Arbhabhirama, AnatA study was conducted in the Ganges-Kobadak (G-K) irrigation project of Bangladesh during the ,Kharif-I (dry) season of 1978. Different aspects of water use for lowland rice and the corresponding irrigation water supply in the selected areas of the project were studied. , Results of the study revealed that seepage and percolation 'losses varied from 3.88 to 6.96 mm/day and the net water use i.e. evapotranspiration plus seepage and percolation ranged from 7.82 to 10.90 mm/day in different areas. Water supplied through the canals was found to be much more than the actual requirement and comparatively higher water supply was observed at the upstream areas. Also, no definite schedule.of water supply was found to exist in the system. High water use efficiency was found at the downstream areas compared to the upstream areas.indicating excessive loss of the supplied water at the upstream areas. Saleh; Hamidur Rahman, Khan, Dr.Although Aus and Aman rice cover 89% of the total cropped ar'ea and yield 83.7% of the total rice output, these two crops are still grown under 'providence' methods ~ that is, by impounding rainfall inside the cropped area and depending entirely upon rainfall as a soil moisture source. The high uncertainty involved regarding availability of rainfall during transplanting and during the crop growing periods of these two predominantly rainfed crops has often meant that investments made in these crops were lost, although the mean annual rainfall in the country varies from 1400 mm in Rajshahi to over 5000 mm in Sylhet and 80% of this rainfall occurs during theAus and Arnan crop growing periods. andanaly'sing the risks associated with rainfed Aus and Arnan cul tivatidns. Exper,imental plots were taken at the farm of Bangladesh Rice Research Institute, Joydebpur. There were in all five treatments ranging from totally rainfed'plots to 25 mm to,SO mm standing water on the plots. The water balance method was applied for determining the crop water requirement with provisions for measuring rainfall, evaporation and seepage and percolation. From the study, it was observed that with supplementary irrigation increase in yield varying from 8% to 71% over rainfed condition occured during the study period for different treatments. The amount of supplementary irrigation varied from 69 mm in Aus season to 573 mrn in Aman season for the treatment of 25 to 50 mm standing water on the plots. For the saturated plot treatment a 57% higher yield over rainfed condition was observed during the Aman season and required 14.4 mrn of water from irrigation. From the analysis of rainfall data it was observed that rainfall during the crop growing period has to be supplemented by irrigation to meet the crop water requirement and to ensure a dependable yield during the Aus and Aman seasons. From probability analysis of rainfall it was found that the Aus crop requires supplementary irrigation in one out of four years and in case of Aman crop the supplementary irrigation is required in three out of four years. The amount of supplementary irrigation required varies from 0 to 67 mm for Aus season and 67 mm to 309mm for Amah season with rainfall probabilities varying from 50 to 75 percent and 25 to 75 percent for Aus and Aman seasons respectively.Item Water utilization efficiency of irrigation project - a case study of Dacca-Narayangaj-Demra project(Department of Water Resources Engineering, 1981-06) Md.
