Higher education in private universities of Bangladesh: A study on female students' enrollment behavior
(BRAC University, 2009) Khan, Rezwanul Huque; Mridha, Ali Haider Al Mamun; Barua, Suborna
This paper investigates the enrollment behavior of the female students of private universities in Bangladesh. By collecting data from a sample of 900 female students of twelve private universities classified into two strata, researchers conducted reliability test, descriptive analysis, chi-square and ANOVA tests and identified a number of key findings as to the enrollment behavior of female students. The research shows that the female students mostly prefer BBA program followed by BA in English. In the faculty of Science and Engineering, BS in Pharmacy gets the highest preference. In Post Graduate level MBA and M.A in English are the preferred subjects. The most important factor for the female students of one strata (top ranked private universities) during admission is the quality of teaching of the university, followed by the image of that university. On the contrary, the female students of other private universities look for lower tuition fees of their preferred program. For the both strata parents' decision has a significant influence. Finally, the female students of top ranked universities are highly satisfied with the image of their universities while the female students of other universities are dissatisfied with the overall performance of their universities.

Language learning motivation: what's on a student's mind when learning English language
    (BRAC University, 2009) Ahmed, Tahreen
This paper explores students' language learning motivation and the factors that motivate and demotivate them in English learning at BRAC University. A total of 124 ENG-091 students were surveyed in summer 2009 and asked about their reasons for learning English, whether they felt motivated in attending their classes and the factors that motivate and demotivate them. Also suggestions are given on how ENG-091 can be developed further so that students feel intrinsically motivated to learn language for their own sake rather than for external rewards such as grades and a good job as the findings suggest.

Greenfield vs Acquisitions: determinants of choice in emerging economies
    (BRAC University, 2009) Kamal, Shawkat
This paper aims at finding determinants of entry mode choices for MNCs that enter emerging economy nations as wholly owned subsidiaries. Existing literature suggests that this area of international business literature is relatively understudied and reasons for conducting more research exist. In this paper, i test three hypotheses using a logistic regression model. More specifically, this paper looks at the role of contributed assets and organizational learning and experience in determining the choice between greenfield entry and acquisitions. The results suggest that host country experience and past entry experience has an impact on the current entry mode choice.

Computational fluid dynamics study of flow behaviour inmembrane module with multiple filaments
    (BRAC University, 2009) Hussain, Sharmina
Membrane separation technology has added a new dimension in modern separation technology. The recent novel development in membrane process have made it possible to use various different purposes at economical rates with additional flexibility and improved efficiencies. Feed spacers can provide higher shearrates at the membrane surface. As a result concentration polarization and membrane fouling can be reduced. The present work is devoted to investigate the hydrodynamics in two dimensional spacer filled channels. Three different configurations of the cylindrical spacers are investigated with different channel Reynolds number and different meshlength. Different size and shape of formation of recirculation region, upstream and downstream of the spacers are closely observed. This recirculation regions have an important role in enhancing the mass transfer in reattachment region.

Professional English language course with content
(BRAC University, 2009) Chowdhury, Samina Nasrin
This paper offers a critical examination of a content-based professional EFL course, designed by centre for Languages (CFL), BRAC University in Bangladesh with the objectives of improving students’ language skills, content knowledge and professional attitude. How content-based instruction (CBI) develops students’ language and cognitive learning are analyzed in Bangladesh EFL context with literature review. The out come shows progress in students’ language proficiency as well as their professional knowledge. A brief outline of the course with implementation process are also presented with the aim of focusing CBI as an effective way for creating motivated, enthusiastic and better learners.

Evaluation of different temporal disaggregation techniques and an application to Italian GDP
(BRAC University, 2009) Islam, Mohammad Rafiqul
In this paper temporally disaggregation is conducted through regression-based models, namely by Chow-Lin (1971) and Fernandez (1981). The disaggregation is carried out using four GDP series of Italy, collecting data from ISTAT (Statistical office of Italy). We evaluated disaggregating capacity as well as forecasting ability about the future series by different simulation techniques. The analysis shows that Chow-Lin maximum likelihood estimation disaggregates the GDP better than Famandez although, for the case of seasonal adjusted data the performance of both procedure are very close. In contrast, the prediction equality of Femandez seems to outperform Chow-Lin (MaxLog). This a scholastic work, but the results may be a guideline to temporally disaggregate the annual GDP series into quarterly series by Chow-Lin and Femandez approaches, which will be beneficial for the countries where high frequency (quarterly) GDP are not available. It is noted that the paper was written during a two months research training under EMMA program (20/08/2009-20/10/2009) at the department of statistical sciences, university of Padua, Italy.

Combined effects of radiation and heat generation on MHD natural convection flow along a vertical flat plate in presence of heat conduction
(BRAC University, 2009) Ali, Mohammad Mokaddes; Akhter, Rowsanara
Study of the effects of radiation and heat generation on MHD natural convection flow of an incompressible viscous electrically conducting fluid along a vertically placed flat plate in presence of heat conduction is considered. The governing equations of the flow are transformed into dimensionless from with appropriate transformations and then solved using the implicit finite difference method with Keller-Box scheme. The resulting numerical solutions of transformed governing equations are presented graphically in terms of velocity profile, temperature distribution, local shear stress, local heat transfer rate and surface temperature and the effects of magnetic parameter (M), radiation parameter (R), Prandtl number(Pr) and heat generation parameter (Q) on the flow and the graphs are discussed.

Approaches to affordable and sustainable housing
    (BRAC University, 2009) Rahman, Mahbubur
Squatter settlements provide housing to 30-70% of the urban population in many developing countries. They have grown enormous due to widespread poverty and inadequate housing finance and land development systems. Governments mostly assisted by the international aid agencies have improved environment, tenure security, income and resources in many settlements. Yet the problems persist as benefits did not multiply due to lack in institutional development, policy implementation, governance, participation etc. Moreover, that the squatters themselves often can bring affordable and sustainable solutions was ignored. This paper discusses the changing approaches to the issues of low-income groups housing worldwide in the above context. The role of the word Bank in setting the core themes and its support for the spontaneous growth is particularly examined.
