Item EFFECT OF NITROGEN LEVELS AND TIME OF APPLICATIONS ON YIELD AND QUALITY OF SOYBEAN(DEPARTMENT OF AGRONOMY, 2014-06) AKTHER, ZAKIAA field experiment was conducted at the Agronomy research field, Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka during January 2013 to March 2013,to find out the effect of 4 nitrogen levels viz., N1 (10 kg ha-1), N2 (20 kg ha-1), N3 (30 kg ha-1), N4 (40 kg ha-1) and different splitting of nitrogen viz., S1= ( split application at basal), S2= (split application at basal and at 10 DAS), S3= ( split application at basal, at 10 DAS and at 20 DAS) and S4 =( split application at basal, at 10 DAS, at 20 DAS and at 30 DAS) on the seed yield and quality of soybean. The application of nitrogen levels had significant effect on yield and quality contributing parameters of soybean irrespective of splitting of nitrogen. Application of 40 kg ha-1 exhibited the best performance for all growth, yield and seed quality of soybean. From 4 split N application (at basal, at 10 DAS, at 20 DAS and at 30 DAS) showed best results whereas lowest in split application at basal. Out of 16 treatment combinations, 40 kg ha-1 with 4 split application at basal, at 10 DAS, at 20 DAS and at 30 DAS of nitrogen performed the best in terms of yield and quality of soybean. The maximum yield (2.29 t ha-1) was obtained by 40 kg N ha-1 with 4 split application at basal, at 10 DAS, at 20 DAS and at 30 DAS. The maximum protein percentages (40.79%) was found in N4S3 combination whereas the minimum (36.10%) was in N1S3. These results indicated that the application of 40 kg N ha-1 with 4 split application ( at basal, at 10 DAS, at 20 DAS and at 30 DAS) would be best for maximizing the seed yield and quality of soybean.Item IMPROVEMENT OF GERMINATION AND SEEDLING GROWTH OF RICE THROUGH PRIMING UNDER SALT STRESS CONDITION(DEPARTMENT OF AGRONOMY, 2014-06) BADHAN, WASIA JAHANAn experiment was conducted at the Agronomy laboratory of Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka-1207 during the period from July, 2013 to December, 2013 to improve germination and seedling growth of rice through seed priming under salt stress condition. The experiment was laid out in a completely randomized design (CRD) with five replications. BRRI dhan28 (V1, salt sensitive) and BRRI dhan47 (V2, salt tolerant) were used in this experiment. The treatments comprised five levels of salt concentration (0, 50, 100, 150 and 200 mM NaCl) and priming times (6, 9, 12, 15 and 18 hr). Results revealed that germination percentage (GP) 97.75%, germination index (GI) 40.95, seedling length (SL) 143.3 and vigour index (VI) 144.90 were improved by seed priming. Seeds primed with 100 mM NaCl gave the better result compared to non-primed seeds in V1 varieties. Seeds primed with 150 mM NaCl gave the better result in terms of germination behavior and seedling growth compared to untreated control in V2 varieties. Then seeds of V2 was primed in 0, 6, 9, 12, 15, 18 hrs with 150 mM NaCl solution and distilled water. Priming time 15 hours showed the best result in V2 varieties when seeds primed with 150 mM NaCl ( GP, GI, SL,VI, SL, RL) compared to water priming and untreated control. Finally V1 primed with water and 100 mM NaCl and V2 primed with distilled water and150 mM NaCl solution for 15hrs. Dry seed used as control and was exposed to 0, 50, 100, 150 and 200 mM NaCl induced salt stress conditions in Petri dishes. In both varieties (V1 and V2) when the salt stress was increased at the same time GP, GI, VI and SL was decreased. The highest GP, GI, VI and SL were detected in the treatments of control and lowest GP, GI, VI and SL were detected in the treatments primed with 200 mM NaCl.Item WEED SUPPRESSION FOR INCREASING PROFITABILITY IN JUTE CULTIVATION BY INCORPORATING LEAFY VEGETABLES (GREEN AMANRANTH AND JUTE)(DEPARTMENT OF AGRONOMY, 2014-06) AFROSE, UMME RUMANAAn experiment was conducted at the Agronomy fields of Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka, during the period from April to August 2013 to study the weed suppression in Jute field by growing leafy vegetables (either green amaranth or incorporating higher jute plants) and thereby increasing the profitability of jute cultivation. The experiment was laid out in a randomized complete block design with 3 replications. The treatments comprised either sole jute cultivation or in combination of fiber jute with jute for leafy vegetable or with amanranth (T1 = Control, jute only, spacing 30 cm; T2 = Jute row spacing 30 cm + one line jute (as leafy vegetable) between two adjacent jute lines; T3 = Jute row spacing 30 cm + jute broadcast (as leafy vegetable) between two adjacent jute lines; T4 = Paired row jute 15 cm apart + 4 rows amaranth (as leafy vegetable) 15 cm apart between two adjacent paired rows of jute; T5 = Paired row jute 15 cm apart + broadcast jute (as leafy vegetable) between two adjacent paired rows of jute; T6 = Jute 30 cm apart + one amaranth line (as leafy vegetable) between two adjacent jute row; T7 = Jute 30cm apart + broadcast amaranth (as leafy vegetable) between two adjacent jute row; T8 = Mixed jute for fiber (6 kg ha-1 ) and amaranth (4 kg ha-1) sown for leafy vegetable; T9 = Mixed jute for fiber (6 kg ha-1 ) and amaranth (2 kg ha-1) as leafy vegetable; T10 = Paired row jute for fiber 15 cm apart + broadcast amaranth (as leafy vegetable) between two adjacent paired rows of jute; T11= Paired row jute for fiber for fiber 15 cm apart + 3 rows amaranth (as leafy vegetable) between two adjacent paired rows of jute T12= Paired row jute for fiber 15cm apart + 4 rows jute (as leafy vegetable) between two adjacent paired rows of jute; T13= Mixed jute for fiber (6 kg ha-1) and amaranth (8 kg ha-1) for leafy vegetable). Results showed that the greater amount of jute sak was obtained from T1, T4, T6 and T10 (over 26 g m-2). The longest jute plant was observed in T6 (2.67 m). In the 1st weeding the greatest weed infestation was seen in T11 but in the second weeding, that was found in T13. Significantly higher jute fiber yields were obtained in T1, and T6 (over 3.7 t ha-1). Significantly greater harvest indices were obtained from T3, T6, T9 and T12. (around 40%). The highest costs in respect of weeding (9000 Tk.ha-1) and total costs was obtained with T1 (76421 Tk.ha-1). T1 and T6 showed identical value of jute fiber (over 148000 Tk.ha-1) with the greatest cost in T1. T1 and T6 also showed higher total returns (over 154000 Tk.ha-1). However, the highest net income was obtained with T6 (94997Tk.ha-1) along with the highest Benefit cost ratio (1.61).Item EFFECT OF DIFFERENT WEED CONTROL METHODS ON THE YIELD OF TRANSPLANTED AMAN RICE VARIETIES(DEPARTMENT OF AGRONOMY, 2014-06) SHARMIN, TANIAA field experiment was conducted at Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka, Bangladesh during August to December, 2013 in T. aman season with a view to find out the performance of two transplanted aman rice varieties BRRI dhan56 and BRRI dhan57 under different weed control methods viz. chemical herbicide Rifit 50EC (Pretilachor 500 g L-1) @ 1 L/ha (W1), polythene paper (W2), stale seedbed (W3), one hand weeding at 20 DAT (W4), two hand weeding at 20 and 40 DAT (W5) and no weeding (control) (W6) using split plot design. Eighteen different weed species infested the field among which Cyperus michelianus (36.73%), Cyperus esculentus (17.31%) at 30 DAT; Cyperus esculentus (25.13%) Alternanthera sessilis (21.53%) and Cyperus difformis (15.79%) at 60 DAT, Fimbristylis miliaceae (19.50%) at 90 DAT were dominant. Two hand weeding at 20 and 40 DAT (W5) showed highest weed control efficiency 89.90% at 30 DAT, 59.74% at 60 DAT and 78.85% 90 DAT. The results showed that BRRI dhan56 produced the highest (3.70 t ha-1) grain yield when two times weeding were performed at 20 and 40 DAT. BRRI dhan56 produced longest panicle length (23.39 cm), 1000-grain weight (23.12 g), grain yield (3.14 t ha1), straw yield (5.16 t ha-1), biological yield (8.90 t ha-1), harvest index (35.08%) better than the BRRI dhan57. Economic analysis of the weed control parameters shows that, the highest (1.92) BCR was recorded from the chemical herbicide Rifit 500EC weed control. While the two hand weeding, stale seed bed and one hand weeding produces 1.79, 1.69 and 1.48 BCR respectively.Item GROWTH AND YIELD OF RAPESEED (Brassica campestris) AS AFFECTED BY SULPHUR AND BORON FERTILIZER(DEPARTMENT OF AGRONOMY, 2014-06) RAZIA, SULTANAAn experiment was done at the Agronomy field laboratory, Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka during the period from Robi, 2013-14 to investigate the growth and yield performance of rapeseed as affected by sulphur (S) and boron (B). The experiment was laid out in two factors randomized complete block design (RCBD) with three replications. There were 16 treatment combinations (4 S doses x 4 B doses). The sulphur treatments were 0 kg ha-1 (S0), 18.6 kg ha-1 (S1), 27.9 kg ha-1 (S2) and 37.2 kg ha-1 (S3). Boron treatments were 0 kg ha-1 (B0), 0.875 kg ha-1 (B1), 1.75 kg ha-1 (B2) and 2.625 kg ha-1 (B3). Results showed that highest plant height (113.18 cm) was achieved at the combination of 37.2 kg ha-1 S dose and 1.75 kg ha-1 B dose. The highest dry matter (16. 8 g) was produced at the combination of 37.2 kg ha-1 S and 2.625 kg ha-1 B. The highest siliquae plant-1 (209.67), siliqua length (5.33) and seeds siliqua-1 (25.2) was achieved at the combination of 37.2 kg ha-1 S and 2.625 kg ha-1 B, 27.9 kg ha-1 S and 2.625 kg ha-1 B, 18.6 kg ha-1 S and 0 kg ha-1 B, 27.9 kg ha-1 S and 0 kg ha-1 B, 27.9 kg ha-1 S and 2.625 kg ha-1 B respectively. The lowest sterility percentage (3.03%) was observed at the combination of 37.2 kg ha-1 S and 1.75 kg ha-1 B. The highest grain yield (3.07 t ha-1) and harvest index (36.07%) was obtained at the combination of 27.9 kg ha-1 S dose and 1.75 kg ha-1 B dose and 0 kg ha-1 S dose and 0 kg ha-1 B dose. Highest weight of 1000-seed (3.83 g) was found at the combination of 27.9 kg ha-1 S and 0.875 kg ha-1 B. The highest oil percentage (41.32) was obtained at the combination of 37.2 kg ha-1 S and 1.75 kg ha-1 B.Item WEED SUPPRESSION STUDY OF MULCH MATERIALS IN T. AMAN CULTIVATION(DEPARTMENT OF AGRONOMY, 2014-06) MAJUMDER, SUJANThe study was conducted at the Agronomy Farm, Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka-1207, Bangladesh, during the period from August to December 2013 to evaluate the weed suppression efficacies of six mulch materials applied with three rice varieties experimented in a randomized complete bock designed plots. The varieties under the trial were BRRI dhan33; BRRI dhan56 and BRRI dhan57 designated V1, V2 and V3 respectively. The mulch materials used were maize stover; mustard straw; rice straw; sesame straw; water smart weed (Bishkathali) and no mulch as also designated T1, T2, T3, T4, T5 and T6 respectively. The plant height was influenced significantly by rice varieties but mulch materials showed no effect on it. The highest plant height was observed in combination effect of BRRI dhan56 x mustard straw mulch (124.3cm) and that of the lowest was found in BRRI dhan57 with No mulch (97.2cm). At 80 DAT, the highest number of tillers hill-1(23.88) was observed in BRRI dhan57. Moreover, the highest number of tillers hill-1 (25.33) was observed in BRRI dhan57 treated with maize stover. The plant dry matter was influenced significantly by rice varieties but effect of mulch materials was not significant. The highest grain yield (5.415 t ha-1) was found in BRRI dhan33 which might have supported by higher panicle length(27.03cm) , number of filled grain panicle-1 (148.55) and thousand grain weight (28.41gm). Grain yield of rice did not differ significantly due to mulch materials. However, the highest grain yield (5.508 t ha-1) was observed due to combined effect of BRRI dhan33 and rice straw while the lowest (3.717 t ha-1) was estimated in BRRI dhan57 x no mulch combination. Mustard straw mulch reflected higher harvest index (50.02%) which is statistically similar with sesame stover (49.7%). BRRI dhan33 x mustard straw and BRRI dhan56 x water smart weed showed higher harvest index 53.81% and 53.11%, respectively while BRRI dhan57 x no mulch showed the lowest (43.2%).The highest and the lowest number of weeds at first weed collection was found in BRRI dhan56 (29.11) and BRRI dhan57 (11.72). respectively. Significant variation was recorded in number of weed production at second weed collection with the highest density at no mulch (15.88) and the lowest number (2.44) at water smart weed straw. The result indicated that mulch materials had influence on weed suppression. In interaction effect, BRRI dhan 56 x no mulch showed highest weeds while BRRI dhan 56 x water smart weed and BRRI dhan57 x water smart weed produce lowest (2) weed at 2nd weed collection.Item RESPONSE OF DIFFERENT SOURCES OF POTASSIUM ON GROWTH, YIELD AND QUALITY OF FIVE POTATO VARIETIES(DEPARTMENT OF AGRONOMY, 2014-06) SARKER, SRABANTIKAA field experiment was conducted at the Agronomy research field of Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka, during the period from November 2013 to March 2014, to study the response of different sources of potassium on growth, yield and quality of five potato varieties. The experiment comprised of two factors; Factor I: source of potassium fertilizer: 3 source; S1 - Muriate of potash (MoP or KCl), S2 - Potassium nitrate (KNO3), S3 - Potassium sulfate (K2SO4) and Factor II: potato: 5 variety; V1 - Cardinal, V2 - Asterix, V3 - Carriage, V4 - Diamant, V5 - BARI TPS-1. The experiment was laid out in a split-plot design with three replications. The result revealed that different source of potassium and/or varieties had significant effects on most of the growth, yield and quality parameters. Among three different sources of potassium, potassium sulphate showed the best performance on most of the growth, yield and quality contributing characters. On the other hand among the five potato varieties, Diamant exhibited better performance in respect of yield, dry matter content, specific gravity and total soluble solids in tuber compared to those of other potato varieties. Among the fifteen treatment combinations, the ‘Diamant’ variety with the application of potassium sulfate produced maximum tuber yield (31.47 t ha-1), highest dry matter content (22.30 %), maximum specific gravity (1.12 g cm-3) and optimum total soluble solids (4.30 % brix). Although the combination of potassium sulphate and Diamant (S3V4) showed better growth, yield, quality performance but the combination of potassium nitrate and Diamant (S2V4) also demonstrated statistically similar results in sometime. So, planting potato variety ‘Diamant’ is suitable for producing good quality potato along with applying potassium sulfate or nitrate.Item GROWTH, YIELD AND QUALITY OF SOYBEAN AS INFLUENCED BY PLANT GROWTH REGULATORS AND THEIR STAGES OF APPLICATION(DEPARTMENT OF AGRONOMY, 2014-06) KHATUN, SONIAA pot experiment was conducted at Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka during November, 2013 to March, 2014 with a view to find out the influence of different plantgrowth regulators and their stages of application on the growth, yield and quality of soybean cv. BARI Soybean-6. The experiment was consisted of four plantgrowth regulators viz., Control (water) (H0), Salicylic acid 50 ppm (H1),Gibberellic acid(GA3) 100 ppm (H2),Kinetin500 ppm (H3) and four stages of application i.e., Vegetative stage (S1) at 25 Days after sowing (DAS), flower initiation stage (S2) at 40 DAS, pod initiation stage (S3)at 50 DAS and flower + pod initiation stage (S4) at 40 and 50 DAS.The two factor experiment was set up in a Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with five replications. The different plant growth regulators and / or stages of application showed significant effect on plant height, chlorophyll content (SPAD value), average length of internode,100-seed weight, seed yield,harvest index, protein content and moisture percentage in seed of soybean. Results revealed that salicylic acid gave the highest seed yield (4.12 g plant-1), which was statistically similar to GA3 (3.52 g plant-1) and kinetin (4.09g plant-1). Application of plant growth regulators atflower + pod initiation stage was found to be the most effective that produced the highest seed yield (4.54 g plant-1), which was statistically similar to vegetative (3.54g plant-1) and flower initiation stage (3.15 g plant-1). Among the treatment combinations the application of salicylic acid at flower and pod initiation stage showed the highest seed yield and maximum proteincontent compared to those of other growth regulators. So salicylic acid acts an important role for increasing soybean yield as well as protein content, when it was applied at flower and pod initiation stage.Item STORABILITY OF RICE SEED WITH VARIED MOISTURE CONTENT IN EARTHEN POT OF DIFFERENT FORMS(DEPARTMENT OF AGRONOMY, 2014-06) SARKER, SOHELIThe experiment was conducted in the farm laboratory of the department of Agronomy, Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University during the period from June to December, 2013. The experiment was carried out to evaluate the efficiency of different storage containers with different seed moisture content on seed quality of boro rice (BRRI dhan28) seeds. Different storage containers used in the study were C1 = coalter coated earthen pot, C2 = traditional earthen pot and C3 = polythene bag contained in traditional earthen pot. Different seed moisture contents were M1= 10% seed moisture, M2= 12% seed moisture, M3= 14% seed moisture and M4= 16% seed moisture. The experiment was designed in Completely Randomized consisting two factors: storage container and seed moisture content. Seed quality measuring parameter viz. seed moisture and germination percentage, seed vigour and seedling vigour were determined at 2 months interval i.e. in August, October and December. The storage container, coalter coated earthen pot (C1) showed the highest germination, normal seedlings and vigour index followed by polythene bag in traditional earthen pot (C3) and traditional earthen pot (C2) where the last one showed significantly the lowest. Seed moisture percentage, electrical conductivity was the highest in traditional earthen pot but lowest in coalter coated earthen pot. Seed vigour, seedling root-shoot length were significantly affected when the rice seeds were stored in traditional earthen pot with 16% seed moisture content. The coalter coated earthen pot with irrespective of seed moisture content could produce normal seedling up to the end of the storage i.e. December, 2013 but polythene bag contained in earthen pot and traditional earthen pot could produce only up to August, 2013. Storing rice seeds with 12% seed moisture in coalter coated earthen pot performed better than with 10% seed moisture content. The moisture content of seed during storing was the critical factor on which the time of storage was dependent with regard to seed viability. Higher the moisture contents of seed at storage, higher the rapidity of viability loss.Item WEED SUPPRESSION IN JUTE FIELD BY GROWING LEAFY VEGETABLES(DEPARTMENT OF AGRONOMY, 2014-06) SULTANA, SHARMINThe experiment was carried out at the Agronomy research farm of Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University (SAU), Dhaka during the period from April, 2013 to August, 2013 to study the weed suppression in jute field by growing leafy vegetables. Thirteen treatment combinations were T1 = Control, jute only, spacing 30 cm, T2 = Jute 30 cm + one line jute between two adjacent line, T3 = Jute 30 cm+ jute broadcast between two adjacent jute lines, T4 = Paired row jute 15 cm apart + jute 15 cm apart between two adjacent paired rows of jute, T5 = Paired row jute 15 cm apart + Broadcast jute between two adjacent paired rows of jute, T6 = Jute 30 cm apart + one kangkong line between two adjacent jute row, T7 = Jute 30 cm apart + broadcast kangkong between two adjacent jute row, T8 = Mixed jute (4 kg/ha) and kangkong (4 kg/ha), T9 = Mixed jute (4 kg/ha) and kangkong (2 kg/ha), T10 = Paired row jute 15 cm apart + Broadcast kangkong between two adjacent paired rows of jute, T11 Paired row jute 15 cm apart + 3 rows kangkong between two adjacent paired rows of jute, T12 = Paired row jute 15 cm apart + 4 rows kangkong between two adjacent paired rows of jute, T13= Mixed jute (6 kg/ha) and kangkong (8 kg/ha), The experiment was conducted in Randomized Complete Block Design with three replications. The results of the experiment revealed that some of the crop characteristics and yield of jute and kangkong were significant due to intercropping systems. The maximum return from jute green vegetable was obtained from T4 (52514 Tk./ha). T12 showed the highest amount of kangkong yield (11581 kg/ha). The highest dry weight of fiber (3166 kg ha-1) was obtained from T10. The treatment T12 gave the highest gross return Tk.307206 per ha. Among the different treatments T12 gave the highest net return Tk.248335 per ha. The benefit cost ratio (BCR) was found to be the highest (4.22) in the treatment combination T12.
