Item RESPONSE TO SALT STRESS AT MORPHO-PHYSIOLOGICAL AND YIELD ATTRIBUTES IN MUNGBEAN(INSTITUTE OF SEED TECHNOLOGY, SHER-E-BANGLA AGRICULTURAL UNIVERSITY DHAKA 1207, 2016-06) FERDOUS, JANNATULA pot experiment was performed at the Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural Universityin net house, during the period of 10 th September to 12 th November of 2016 to observe and understand the growth and yield attributes of different mungbean varietiesItem INFLUENCE OF SEED SIZE AND SEED TREATMENT ON QUALITY AND YIELD OF MUNGBEAN(INSTITUTE OF SEED TECHNOLOGY, SHER-E-BANGLA AGRICULTURAL UNIVERSITY DHAKA 1207, 2016-06) FERDOUS, REDWANAA field experiment was conducted to study the influence of seed size and seed treatment on quality and yield of mungbean at the central experimental farm, Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka-1207, Bangladesh during August to November, 2016. Treatments consisted of three different seed sizes 1 0 = Composite, S = Control, P Control, B 1 1 2 = Large and S 3 = Small = 1g per kg seed) and two levels of bleaching powder = 2g per kg seed) height, number of leaves, plant dry weight, nodule numbers, number of branches; and yield and yield contributing characters i.e. pods number, pods length, number of seeds pod -1 , 1000 seeds weight of mungbean was significantly influenced by seed size, red chili powder and bleaching powder.The treatments S 2 , P 1 , B 1 , S 2 P 1 , S 2 B 1 , P 1 B 1 and S 2 highest vegetative growth, reproductive development and seed yield 1123.78, 1095.64, 1394.99, 1403.53, 1358.53 and 1932.67 kg ha respectively attributed to the highest number of pods plant -1 , pod weight plant weight. So, the applicationof red chili powder and bleaching powder and improvement of vegetative and reproductive development is attributed to the seed quality. Thus, it can be concluded that the application of red chili powder and bleaching powder had a positive impact on larger seeds size of mungbean. VARIETIES(INSTITUTE OF SEED TECHNOLOGY, SHER-E-BANGLA AGRICULTURAL UNIVERSITY DHAKA 1207, 2016-06) RAHMAN, MD. ZAHEDURThe experiment was conducted into two parts. One was the field to assess the green pods (vegetable) and seed yield, and the other part was laboratory experiment for evaluating of seed quality after priming. The Research Field of Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Sher-e-Bangla Nagar, Dhaka during the period from February-June 2015 to find out the effect of seed priming on yield(green pod)) and seed yield of different okra varieties. The experiment consisted of two factors: Factor A: Three varieties of okra. V : BARI Dheros-1, V 2 : Hybrid Green Soft, V 3 1 : Hybrid Sarika and Factor B: 5 levels of seed priming with different solutions. P 0 : Control (no priming), P : priming with water (hydro priming), P 2 : priming with 3% NaCl solution, P 1 : priming with 3% KCl solution, P 4 : priming with 3% MgSO 4 3 solution. Seeds were primed at the period of 24 hours. The experiment was laid out in Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with three replications. Data on different growth and yield contributing characters, and yield were recorded to find out the suitable variety and level of seed priming of okra. The maximum seed yield (0.633 t ha -1 ), green pod yield (18.78 t ha -1 ) were recorded from V (Hybrid green soft). Due to seed priming treatment, maximum seed yield (0.626 t ha 2 ), green pod yield (19.39 t ha -1 ) were recorded from that is priming with 3 % MgSO 4 solution treatment (P 4 ) .In interaction effect of variety and seed priming V 2 P 4 gave the maximum seed yield (0.695 t ha -1 ) and green pod yield (21.30 t ha -1 ) . In case of laboratory experiment the variety Hybrid green soft (V 2 ) and Priming of treatment with 3% MgSO ) showed higher germination (%) and seed vigority .so variety V and Priming treatment P 4 and interaction of V 2 P 4 4 solution (P 2 seen maximum priming for okra. -1 4Item COMPARATIVE STUDY AND CHARACTERIZATION OF 13 F 6 LINES OF BORO RICE(INSTITUTE OF SEED TECHNOLOGY, SHER-E-BANGLA AGRICULTURAL UNIVERSITY, DHAKA 1207, 2016-06) TAHMINA, ESHATHThe experiments were carried out at the Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University Farm, Bangladesh during December, 2014- May, 2015. The study was attempted to identify short duration and high yielding rice genotypes amongst 13 F6 lines of Boro rice by comparing with 2 check varieties. The performance of studied genotypes, association among various morpho-physiological, yield contributing and quality contributing traits among the genotypes were evaluated under the field condition and lab condition. The performance of 13 F6 lines compared with 2 check varieties and these were compared considering different yield contributing and quality contributing traits. Considering the traits days to 50% flowering and days to maturity the genotype G11 (BRRI dhan 28 x BRRI dhan 29 F6 S2 P4 P3G9) was earliest which was followed by the genotype G15 (BRRI dhan 28). The highest number of effective tillers per plant was recorded in G12 (BRRI dhan 28 X BRRI dhan 36 F6 S7 P8 P5),highest number of primary branches per panicle was recorded from G4 (BR 21× BRRI dhan 28 F6 S5 P3 P4),the number of filled grains per panicle was recorded highest in G7 (BR 24 × BR 26 F6 S6 P4 P8) and Thousand seed weight was found maximum in G4 (BR 21× BRRI Dhan 28 F6 S5 P3 P4).In the experiment G4(BR 21× BRRI dhan 28 F6 S5 P3 P4)showed maximum length, breadth and L/B ratio of milled rice and maximum protein percent. Except G4(BR 21× BRRI dhan 28 F6 S5 P3 P4) and G10(BR 26 x BRRI dhan 29 F6 S6 P3 P3) all lines showed high amount of amylase percent as like check varieties. The maximum milling and hulling percent were found from G3(BR 21 x BRRI dhan 28 F6 S5 P1 P2).The maximum kernel elongation ratio, kernel elongation index and also maximum cooked rice length and cooked rice L/B ratio and also maximum amount of alkaline spreading value showed by G1(BR 21 x BR 26 F6 S6 P7 P7). Among these 13 F6 lines, G11 (BRRI dhan 28 x BRRI dhan 29 F6 S2 P4 P3) exhibited the early maturity, highest total number of spikelet, higher filled grains than checks, third highest yield per plant which was higher than check varieties and most earliest maturity and had higher hulling (%), milling outturn and higher HRR (%), lowest water absorption (%),GT types intermediate, moderate protein (%) and had high amylose content and G5 was shown moderate maturity, higher number of primary branches, highest number of secondary branches, had maximum yield per plant and also had high amylase content.Item COMPARATIVE STUDY OF MORPHO-PHYSICO-CHEMICAL TRAITS OF 27 F LINES OF BORO RICE (Oryza Sativa L.) AGAINST 2 CHECK VARIETIES 6(INSTITUTE OF SEED TECHNOLOGY, SHER-E-BANGLA AGRICULTURAL UNIVERSITY DHAKA 1207, 2016-06) FATIMA, ROUNAKThe experiment was conducted at the experimental Farm, Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Sher-e-Bangla Nagar, Dhaka, Bangladesh during December 2014 to May 2015. Twenty seven selected Boro rice lines and two check varieties were evaluated. Highly significant variations were found among the advanced lines for all the characters studied. The genotypes G7, G4 and G12 taken lower days to 50% flowering than the two check varieties. The highest total tillers per plant and effective tillers per plant were recorded from G25. The highest panicle length, yield per plant, yield per hectare were recorded from G8. The highest secondary branches per panicle, total number of spikelets and number of filled grains were found from G14. Maximum thousand seed weight was recorded from G6. The highest length of rough rice was found from G24. The genotype G5 has shown the highest value in breadth of rough and uncooked rice. The highest value in L/B ratio of rough and uncooked rice was found in G27. Maximum hulling (%), milling outturn (%) and head rice recovery (%) were recorded from G13, G2 and G10 respectively. In this study, ten lines are classified as long slender grains, twelve lines and two check varieties (BRRI dhan-28, BRRI dhan29) are classified as medium slender, three lines are long bold and two lines are short bold grains. Maximum volume expansion (%) and water absorption (%) were recorded from G8 and G20, respectively. The genotype G3 has shown the highest kernel elongation ratio and alkali spreading value, which was in the range of ASV (7.00) that was high alkali digestion and low gelatinization temperature. The genotype G15 has shown the maximum amylose content. Maximum protein content was found in the genotypes G20, G22 and one check variety (BRRI dhan29).Item CHARACTERIZATION OF 18 F 5 LINES OF AUS RICE(INSTITUTE OF SEED TECHNOLOGY SHER-E-BANGLA AGRICULTURAL UNIVERSITY DHAKA 1207, 2016-06) ISLAM, MD. KAMRULThe investigation was carried out under field conditions to characterize eighteen advanced aus rice lines (F ) during the period of transplanting aus season (2015-2016) at the experimental field of Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka-1207. The eighteen genotypes of rice were characterized for 10 quantitative and 31 qualitative traits. All the genotypes were characterized and categorized as per the descriptors developed by Biodiversity International, IRRI and WARDA-2007 for DUS test of inbred rice. Among the qualitative characteristics, no variation was observed in case of anthocyanin coloration of leaf sheath, penultimate leaf ligule shape, microscopic observation of pollen with I 2 5 -KI solution, anthocyanin coloration of lemma and palea, anthocyanin coloration of nodes, anthocyanin coloration of internodes, color of stigma, awns in the spikelet and decorticated grain aroma. Among all the quantitative characters, characters like panicle length, thousand grain weight, number of effective tillers per plant, culm length, time of maturity and grain length provided better agronomic performance which resulted in ultimate higher yield per plant. The average days to maturity was 111 days and the average culm length of the tested genotypes was 79.57 cm and most of the genotypes resulted in early maturity and lodging resistance. The most of the genotypes showed average panicle length 24.33 cm and average thousand grain weight 22.67gm resulted in higher yield per plant. These G1, G3, G6, G8, G9, G10, G12, G16 and G18 were the most promising lines in respect of yield and quality which could be released as variety in future.Item SEED PRIMINGENHANCES DROUGHT STRESS TOLERANCE IN WHEAT SEEDLINGS BY MODULATING ANTIOXIDANT DEFENSE AND GLYOXALASE SYSTEMS(INSTITUTE OF SEED TECHNOLOGY SHER-E-BANGLA AGRICULTURAL UNIVERSITY DHAKA 1207, 2016-06) ALAM, MAZHAR ULAn experiment was conducted at the Laboratory of Plant Stress Responses, Faculty of Agriculture, Kagawa University, Japanto investigate the protective effect of priming with some phytopotectants [50 µM salicylic acid (SA), 4 mM, ascorbic acid (AsA) and 2.5 mM NaCl]under drought stress condition [induced by 15 % (m/v) polyethylene glycol, PEG-6000] in wheat. Drought stress caused higher proline (Pro) accumulation, lower relative water content (RWC), chlorosis and growth inhibition. Enhanced levels of the malondialdelyde (MDA) and hydrogen peroxide (H ) were evident with the overproduction of reactive oxygen species (ROS) by disrupting the antioxidant defense system under drought stress condition.The activities of antioxidant enzymes viz. catalase (CAT), ascorbate peroxidase (APX), dehydroascorbate reductase (DHAR), monodehydroascorbate reductase (MDHAR), glutathione reductase (GR), and glutathione peroxidase (GPX) declined under 15% PEG induced drought stress condition. Compared to control seedlings, drought also increased methylglyoxal (MG) formation which also induced oxidative damage by facilitating ROS production. However, priming of wheat seeds with SA, AsA and NaCl decreased the ROS production by decreasing AsA and increasing glutathione content and upregulating antioxidant defense system. Additionally, increased activities of glyoxalase I and glyoxalase II reduced the levels of MG in drought stressed-wheat seedlings. Seed priming helps to recover the seedlings from chlorosis and growth inhibition whereas decreased the MDA and Pro content and increased the activity of antioxidant enzymes. Therefore it can be concluded that seed priming with SA, AsA and NaCl confers drought stress tolerance by upregulating antioxidant defense and glyoxalase system and helps to better seedling establishment. 2 O 2Item RESPONSE OF VERMICOMPOST ON YIELD AND PROCESSING QUALITY OF POTATO DERIVED FROM TPS AS INFLUENCED BY ITS SIZE(INSTITUTE OF SEED TECHNOLOGY SHER-E-BANGLA AGRICULTURAL UNIVERSITY DHAKA 1207, 2016-06) MOSTOFA, MARUFThe experiment was conducted at Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka-1207, during the period from November, 20 IS to April, 2016 to assess the effect of vermicompost and tuber size on the yield, specific gravity, dry matter, starch, sugar content, antioxidant and polyphenol activity of potato. The experiment was consisted of two factors, i.e., factor A:- Vermicompost level (Vm-4): Vml: 0 t ha", Vm2: 3 t ha", Vm3: 6 t ha" and Vm4: 9 t ha"; factor B:- Tuber size (T-S): r.:S-10 g, T2: 10-20 g, T3:20-30 g, T4: 30-40 g and r; >40 g. Experiment was conducted in a split-plot design with three replications. Vermicompost levels were assigned to main plots and tuber sizes were to sub plot. Low yield and inferior quality are crucial bottleneck for potato production in Bangladesh. The application of vermicompost may enhance the yield and quality of potato. The present research exhibited that vermicompost had significant effect on most of the yield and quality contributing parameters investigated under present experiment. Results showed that yield and other processing quality parameters increased with increasing vermicompost level irrespective of tuber size. Among the twenty (20) treatment combinations, vermicompost at the rate of9 t ha! with tuber size >40 g produced the maximum yield (31.33 t ha') and exhibited the highest firmness (44.349 N), specific gravity (1.084 g cm"), dry matter (22.77%), starch (23.81 mg g" FW), antioxidant (478.84 Trolox IlMol 100 g" FW), polyphenol (96.133 GA mg 100 g-1 FW), flesh color (L *- 7S.60; a*- 11.76; b*- 24.96) and the lowest reducing sugar (0.1020 mg g-1FW) and non-reducing sugar (0.2947 mg g-1FW). In respect of ambient storage condition; firmness, specific gravity, dry matter, starch, skin color and flesh color decreased with increasing storage time while weight loss, total soluble solid (TSS) increased with increasing storage time. In case of total soluble solid (TSS), reducing sugar, non-reducing sugar, antioxidant and polyphenol content slowly increased with increasing storage time up to 40 days after storage (DAS) and thereafter sharply increased and finally became nonsuitable for both table and processing purpose. Therefore, present study suggests that potato growers may use vermicompost for increasing yield and improving processmg quality of potato and can store potato up to 40 DAS at ambient condition.
