    HOST PREFERENCES OF EPILACHNA BEETLE ON DIFFERENT VARIETIES OF BRINJAL PLANT

    The experiment was conducted at the farm of Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka during the Kharjf -2 season from June to November, 2012 to study host preferences of Epilachna beetle on different varieties of brinjal plant. Each variety was considered as individual treatment. There were ten varieties of brinjal. viz. T1 = Shamli, T1 = Muktakeshi, r3 = Yashaswi, T4 = Mohini, Tc = Anondo, T6 = Sandhya, 'I'7 = Harshita. Tg = Dark staflon, I9 = Shingnath and = Islampuri. The experiment was laid out in a Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with three replications. Incidence of epilachna beetle showed significant variation on different varieties of brinjal. Among the varieties. Harsitha was found to be the most tolerant against epilachna beetle pest based on the incidence of minimum number of epilachna beetle, number of eggmass and number of grubs per plant was recorded. Varieties of brinjal on epilachna beetle significantly influenced on growth characteristics of rose whereas minimum number of infested plant per plot, minimum number of infested leaf per plant and minimum number of infested fruit per plant were found from 1-larshita variety. The maximum number of healthy and epilachna free brinjal per plant was found in Harshita variety. Yield per plant was significantly influenced by the different varieties of brinjal on epilachna beetle. The highest yield per plant (1777.00 g) was obtained from Harshita variety of brinjal. On the other hand, the lowest yield per plant (155.2 g) was found from Shamli variety of brinjal. These results indicate that the Harshita variety is tolerant to epilachna beetle of brinjal as well as on growth and yield among all the varietal treatments in this study.

    ECO-FRIENDLY MANAGEMENT OF OKRA SHOOT AND FRUIT BORER USING BOTANICALS AND CHEMICAL

    An experiment was conducted in the farmer’s field at Rampal, under Munshiganj Sadar Upazila of Munsiganj, Bangladesh during the period from February’2014 to June’ 2014 to study the ecofriendly management of okra shoot and fruit borer (Earias vittella Fab.) using botanicals and chemical. The treatments are comprised with different botanical products, one synthetic chemical insecticide and one untreated control and these are T1 = Neem leaf extract @ 200g/Litre of water sprayed at 7 days interval; T2 = Neem seed karnel extract @200g/Litre of water at 7days interval; T3 = Neem oil @ 4 ml/Litre of water mixed with 10ml of trix liquid sprayed at 7 days interval; T4 = Dholkalmi leaf extract @200g/Litre of water at 7 days interval; T5 = Mahogany leaf extract @200g/Litre of water at 7 days interval; T6 = Suntap 50SP @ 1.5ml/ Litre of water at 7 days interval; T7 = Untreated control. The experiment was laid out in Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with three replications. The data were recorded on shoot infestation; fruit infestation by number and weight at early, mid and late fruiting stages; plant and yield related attributes as well as yield of okra. Among all treatments T6 (Suntap 50SP) showed best performance against okra shoot and fruit borer and reduced the highest percent of shoot infestation, plant infestation, flower infestation and fruit infestation by number and weight in early, mid and late stages (85.26, 93.58, 100, 100, 100 percent) over control throughout the growing period of okra respectively. Among the different botanical products, Neem oil @ 4 ml/Litre of water mixed with 10ml of trix liquid sprayed at 7 days interval showed best performance in case of shoot infestation, fruit infestation by number and weight in early, mid and late stages, plant infestation and flower infestation. Also in case of yield, plots treated with T3 ( Neem oil @ 4 ml/Litre of water) gave highest products. On the other hand, Dholkalmi leaf extract @ 200g/Litre of water at 7 days interval showed lowest performance in case of shoot infestation, plant infestation and flower infestation and also the plots treated with this treatment showed lowest production of okra. It was revealed from the experiments, T6= Suntap 50SP @ 1.5ml/ Litre of water at 7 days interval showed best result and T7= Untreated Control showed least performance in case of shoot infestation, fruit infestation by number and weight in early, mid and late stages, plant infestation and flower infestation and Yield. Okra yield was increased due to increases of number of branches/plant, number of leaf/plant and plant height on the other hand fruit yield was decreased due to increase of fruit infestation by number and by weight occurs to okra shoot and fruit borer.

    EFFECTIVENESS OF SOME CONTROL OPTIONS AGAINST THE INSECT PESTS OF WHEAT AND THEIR NATURAL ENEMIES

    An experiment was conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of sonic control options against the insect pests of wheat and their natural enemies during the period from November. 2012 to Marc!). 2013 at the central thrm of Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural L:niversity, Dhaka. Bangladesh. The experiment consists of six management practices such as: 1,: Cultural control (weeding) at 10 days interval, i2: Mechanical control (handpieking of infested tiller) at 7 days interval: 13: Cultural control + Mechanical control at 7 days interval: 14: Spraying of Suntap 50 SP @3.0 gm/f. of water at 7 days interval -t Mechanical control; 1 5: Spraying of Marshal @3.0 nil/I. of water at 7 days interval - Cultural control + Mechanical control at 7 days interval; T6:Spraying olNeern oil 3.0 nil! 10 1. of vater at 7 days interval + Cultural control -I- Mechanical control at 7 days interval and 17: Untreated control. The experiment was laid out in Randomii.ed Complete Block Design (RCI3D) with three replications. Incidence of major insect pest of wheat was recorded as aphid. wireworm. stem fly and army worm. Incidence of natural enemies were also recorded as lady bird beetle, parasitic wasps (parasitoid). svrphid liv and spider. At tillering stage, the lowest infested plants were observed from T (1.37%) treatment, on the other hand, the highest infested plant was recorded in 17 (1 3.23%) untreated control treatment At panicle initiation stage, the lowest infested plants were observed from Ti(1 .75%) treatment. but the highest infested plants were recorded in 17 (1 5.6O%) untreated control treatment. Finally, during grain filling stage. the lowest infested plants were observed from i 5 (2.49%) treatment, whereas the highest infested plants were recorded in 17 (18.77%) untreated control treatment. The longest plant was measured from T5 (92.80 cm) treatment. while the shortest plant was obtained from 17( 77.56 cm) untreated control treatment. 'Ihe highest yield was recorded from T (3.43 t/ha) treatment, while the lowest yield was obtained from T7 (2.14 t/ha) untreated control treatments. Spraying of Marshal @ 3.0 nil/I, of water at 7 days interval - Cultural control + Mechanical control at 7 days interval showed superior br controlling wheat insect pests.

    INTERCROPPING OF MUSTARD AND ITS EFFECT ON APHID AND HONEYBEE

    A study was conducted in the experimental farm of Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University during the period from November 2012 to March 2013 to find out the effect of intercropping on the incidence of aphid and its subsequent impact on growth and yield of mustard and its pollinator honeybee population. The intercroppings were mustard (Brassica napus, Var. Bari Sarisha-7) with wheat (Triticum aestivum L.), onion (Allium cepa L.), garlic (Allium sativum L), coriander (Coriandrum sativum L.), radhuni (Trachyspermum roxburghianum) and gram (Cicer arietinum L.). Sole cropping of mustard was also grown to compare the effectiveness of intercropping system. The experiment was laid out in randomized complete block design (RCBD) with three replications.The overall result indicates that the intercropping of mustard with onion, garlic, coriander and rahuni decreased the incidence of aphid population on mustard and increased the abundance of visiting honeybee compared to sole cropping of (mustard). When aphid number (3.81) was increased in mustard + gram (T6) intercropping system, at that time pod formation/plants (24.78) and seed weight/plot (7.63) were decreased. On the other hand, when aphid number (2.99) was decreased, at that time, pod formation and seed weight/plot (9.87) were increased. It was also observed that, when honeybee population (72.65) was increased then pod formation, seed weight/plot was also increased. On the other hand, when honeybee population (47.12) was decreased then pod number/plants, and seed weight/plot were also decreased.

    EFFECT OF SOME PLANT EXTRACTS ON EGG LAYING, INCUBATION AND ADULT EMERGENCE OF PULSE BEETLE AND PROTECTION OF MUNGBEAN SEEDS IN STORAGE

    The experiment was conducted in the laboratory under the Department of Entomology, Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka, Bangladesh during the period from April to November 2013 to evaluate the effectiveness of some botanicals against the pulse beetle. The experiment comprised five plant materials each with two doses and laid out in Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with three replications. Among the plant materials, Tobacco leaf powder @ 2g/100g mungbean seeds (T8) showed the best performance against the bruchids regarding minimum days of 100% adult mortality (3 days), and reducing fecundity (83.71%), egg hatching (87.19%), adult emergence (92.05%), number of holes per grain (92.04%), as well as lowest level of grain infestation (21.67% by number) and weight loss (4.10%). Tobacco leaf powder @ 1g/100g seeds (T7) also gave the similar results. Turmeric powder @ 2.0/100g seeds (T2) and Red chili powder @ 2.0g/100g seeds (T4) gave the satisfactory result against C. chinensis. Ginger powder also gave intermediate results and neem leaf powder showed the least effectiveness regarding adult mortality, fecundity, egg hatching, adult emergence of bruhcid and grain infestation by them. Tobacco leaf powder may be used for the management of pulse beetle in storage.

    EFFECT OF FERTILIZER ON THE INCIDENCE OF INSECT PESTS ON TOMATO

    The present study was conducted at the field laboratory of Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Sher-e-Bangla Nagar, Dhaka during the period from December 2012 to April 2013 to find out the effect of fertilizers on the incidence of insect pests on tomato. The treatments were comprised of various manure and fertilizers and these were T1 = Recommended Dose (15 ton cow-dung + 400 kg urea + 250 kg TSP + 200 kg MP)/ha, T2 = Recommended Dose + 400kg urea/ha, T3 = Recommended Dose + 250kg TSP/ha, T4 = Recommended Dose + 200 kg MP/ha, T5 = Recommended Dose + (400 kg urea + 250 kg TSP + 200 kg MP)/ha, T6 = Control (No fertilizer). The experiment was laid out in Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with three replications. The highest persent increase of aphid and fruit borer infestation over control was 35.10% and 7.07%, respectively observed T5 treated plot. Treatment T3 gave the best result by decreasing 28.02 % aphid population. Treatment T1, T4 and T2 also decreased 14.24%, 2.87% and 2.79% aphid population over control. Treatment T4 decreased the highest per cent (35.76%) fruit borer infested fruit over control. Treatment T1, T2, and T3 also reduced equal per cent of fruit infestation 28.69% over control. Considering the persent reduction of the number of whitefly over control, the best performence (43.30%) was observed in T5 treated plot and the lowest percent of reduction 1.72% was recorded in T2 treated plot. Treatment T3 showed the best performance in terms of percent reduction of jassid over control, that reduced 53.75% population of jassid having no significant variation to that of T2 (53.55%) but significantly different from others. The lowest percent reduction of jassid over control (17.34%) was recorded in T5 treated plot. The highest vallue was obtained from T3 which reduced 25.55% leaf miner over control that was significantly higher than all other treatments. The lowest percent reduction over control (5.03%) was recorded in T1 treated plot. Finally, the highest per cent increase of plant height, fruit per plant and yield increase over control was achieved in T5 treated plot resulting 15.83%, 76.40% and 62.55%, respectively. Whereas the lowest increase of plant height and fruit per plant over control showed 2.57% and 11.11% which was recorded in T1 treated plot and the lowest yield increase was recorded in T4 treated plot. All treatments ofdifferent doses fertilizers had great impact on major insect pests and yield of tomato.

    STUDY ON THE EFFECTIVENESS OF SOME PROMISING INSECTICIDES AGAINST BRINJAL SHOOT AND FRUIT BORER AND ITS NATURAL ENEMIES

    The experiment was conducted in the central farm of Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University (SAU), Sher-e-Bangla Nagar, Dhaka-1207 during the period from February to September, 2013 to evaluate promising insecticides in comparison with conventional insecticides for management of brinjal shoot and fruit borer (BSFB), Leucinodes orbonalis Guenee and their impact on natural enemies. The experiment was laid out in a Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with three replications and six treatments applied at 7 days interval. The treatments were T1 (Acimix @ 1ml/L of water); T2 (Calipso @ 1ml/L of water); T3 (Neem oil @ 3mml/L of water); T4 (Neem Seed Karnel Extract @ 100g/L of water); T5 (Nexaid @ 1.5ml/L of water); T6 (Untreated Control). The result reveled that amongst newer insecticides Acimix @ 1ml/L of water was most effective in reducing shoot infestation (66.72%) and Calipso @ 1ml/L of water was found most effective in reducing fruit infestation by number and weight (68.56 and 61.04%), over control followed (66.56, 53.7% respectively) by Acimix, whereas Neem Seed Kernel Extract @100gm/L of water from the field showed the least performance (19.40 and 9.17%, respectively). The best treatment, though, T1 and T2 reduced the highest level of shoot and fruit infestation respectively, they increased the maximum level of plant and fruit related yield attributes. T2 increased the maximum height, number of branch per plant, fruit length and girth, number of fruit per plant, and single fruit weight (27.06, 36.50, 43.40, 55.91, 68.41 and 61.04%, respectively) of eggplant over control followed by Acimix (13.33, 33.46, 33.95, 39.00, 66.56 and 53.7%, respectively), whereas Neem Seed Kernel Extract @ 100g/L of water showed the least performance. Calipso also increased the highest fruit yield (15.360 t/ha) over control (14.860 t/ha) followed by Acimix (40.987%). Considering the impact of management practices on the population of natural enemy, Calipso had adversely affected and reduced the highest population of adult and larvae of ladybird beetle, and field ant (81.34, 72.42 and 63.18% respectively) over control followed by Acimix (67.81, 52.99, and 52.21%, respectively), whereas Neem Seed Kernel Extract performed as the least hazardous treatment. Though, Calipso reduced the highest level of BSFB infestation followed by Acimix, conversely they mostly harmful to the arthropod biodiversity in the brinjal ecosystem by reducing the maximum level of the natural enemy population than any other newer insecticides which were comparatively safe , and would be fit well into the management of brinjal shoot and fruit borer (BSFB).

    ASSESSMENT OF DIFFERENT NEEM PRODUCTS FOR THE MANAGEMENT OF RICE WEEVIL (SITOPHILUS ORYZAE L.) IN STORED RICE GRAIN

    The experiment was conducted to study the damage assessment and effect of different neem products for the management of rice weevil (Sitophilus oryzae L.) in stored rice grain during the period from July to December 2013. Stored husked and unhusked rice of BR 27 were used as the experimental materials. The experiment consists of the treatments: T1: Neem leaves dust 10 gm/kg of stored rice grains; T2: Neem seed kernel dusts @ 10 gm/kg of stored rice grains; T3: Neem leaves extract @ 10 ml/kg of stored rice grains; T4: Neem oil 5 ml/kg of stored rice grains and T5: Untreated control. The experiment was laid out in the ambient condition of the laboratory following in a Completely Randomized Design (CRD) and the treatments was replicated four times for each. In case of unhusked rice, the highest mortality (100.00%) was observed in T4 treatment, while the lowest 5.25% mortality was recorded in T5 treatment. For husked rice, the highest mortality (100.00%) was observed in T4, while the lowest mortality (9.00%) was recorded in T5 treatment. At 1st generation for unhusked rice, in weight basis, the highest infestation was recorded from T5 (9.49%) treatment while the lowest in T4 (1.32) and for husked rice, the highest infestation was recorded from T5 (10.68%), while the lowest in T4 (2.79%) treatment. On the other hand, by number basis in unhusked rice, the highest infestation was found from T5 (11.57%), while the lowest in T4 (2.47%) treatment and for husked rice, the highest infestation was found from T5 (14.72%) while the lowest in T4 (3.86%) treatment. Similar trend of results were revealed from the 2nd and 3rd generations. At 1st generation, for unhusked rice, the highest weight loss was found in T5 (18.21%), while the lowest was found in T4 (3.89%) treatment and for husked rice grain, the highest weight loss was recorded in T5 (21.45%), whereas the lowest was observed in T4 (4.38%) treatment. Similar trend of result also recorded in 2nd and 3rd generation. In case of repellency effect for unhusked rice, after 5 hours of treatment application the highest repellency rate was found from T4 and T3 (100.00%), whereas the lowest repellency rate (80.00%) was recorded in T1 treatment. In case of repellency effect for husked rice, after 5 hours of treatment application the highest repellency rate was found from T4 and T3 (100.00%) treatments which was followed by T1 and T2 (90.00%) treatments. Among the neem products neem oil 5 ml/kg of stored rice grains was more effective for controlling rice weevil.

    HOST PREFERENCE OF RED PUMPKIN BEETLE (Aulacophora foveicollis,Lucas) ON DIFFERENT CUCURBITS

    A field experiment was carried out to find out the host preference of red pumpkin beetle at the research field of Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka, during March 2012 to June 2012. To find out the host preference of red pumpkin beetle (Aulacophora foveicollis) on different cucurbits. Eight cucurbitaceous plants(varieties) viz. Sweet gourd (Cucurbita moschata), Wax gourd (Benincasa hispida), Bottle gourd (Lagenaria siceraria Molina.) Cucumber (Cucumis sativus), Snake gourd (Trichosanthes dioica), Ridge gourd (Luffa acutangula), Sponge gourd (Luffa cylindrica) and Bitter gourd (Momordica charantia) were taken to conduct the experiment in Randomized Completely Block Design (RCBD) with three replications. Data were recorded from 4 day after sowing(DAS) to 64 DAS on number of plants pit-1, damage of infested cotyledon(%), number of infested plants pit-1, number of infested leaves plant-1, total number of infested leaves plot-1, damage of infested flowers(%) and damage of infested fruits(%). Sweet gourd cotyledon showed the maximum damage (45.00%) than that of other cucurbits at 9 DAS, all plants of sweet gourd pit-1 were infested by red pumpkin beetle. The highest leaf infestation (34.00) was observed at 64 DAS. The highest flower damage(%) plot-1 (27.33%) was also observed in sweet gourd at 54 (DAS), whereas the highest damage percentage of infested fruits plot-1(36.67%) was also observed in sweet gourd at 64 DAS. Sweet gourd was found in highly preferred condition by RPB and bitter gourd was found in least preferred condition by red pumpkin beetle in this study.
