A study on the listening and speaking skills in English at HSC level : challenges and possible solutions

In the field of English language teaching in Bangladesh, it is generally seen that only two of the four skills of the language-reading and writing are taught. But a course on English language is any level of education needs to focus on the four skills of the language, listening, speaking, reading and writing. As a result, the other two skills, listening and speaking, are neglected in the teaching of English in Bangladesh. Consequently the proficiency of learners in these two skills of the English language relatively poor. This study explores the strategies the learners at the Intermediate level employ in learning the speaking and listening skills in English. At the same time this study explores the situations of teaching these two skills in English at HSC level in Bangladesh. In order to investigate the above mentioned issues an interview was conducted. The interview comprised of eight respondents from eight different colleges of Dhaka, Bangladesh. Data was collected using a questionnaire on language learning strategies of the HSC level learners in Bangladesh. The finding shows the some challenges and possible solutions on the way of applying these two skills at HSC level students.
How toddlers acquire a second language in an Irish environment

This research attempts to find, how the Bangladeshi children and toddlers who suddenly move to another country from their birth country learn a new language (English) and cope up with a totally different environment at their early stage of acquiring a language. The paper also discusses the problem children face while acquiring a second language. The researcher distributed questionnaires among the children’s parents to collect data. A mixed method was used to analyse the data. Recommendations have been given to overcome the obstacles while learning English as a second language in Irish environment for the children in the paper. The paper will be significant for Bangladeshi parents living in foreign countries who aim to help their children in adapting to an environment of second language.
Teaching methods and approaches in ESL classrooms in Dhaka : a comparative study between English and Bangla Medium schools

The study explores the present state of English Language Teaching in both English and Bangla medium schools in Bangladesh. It focuses exclusively on ELT teaching methods and approaches in Bangla and English medium schools, and compares the findings. The instruments are teacher questionnaires and researcher‟s classroom observation checklist. From the findings, it was evident that in case of English language teaching, teachers follow techniques that broadly fall under the communicative approach. language teaching, whereas Bangla medium school teachers follow those techniques that fall under Grammar translation method. These findings were supported by the findings of the researcher‟s own checklist except for a few differences.
