Item MANAGEMENT OF SUCKING INSECT PESTS OF BRINJAL USING PLANT EXTRACTS(DEPARTMENT OF ENTOMOLOGY, 2011-06) KARIM, MD. FOZLULAn experiment was conducted at the experimental farm of Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University Dhaka, during February to August, 2012 to evaluate some plant extracts against sucking insect pests such as aphid (Aphis gossypii), jassid (Amrasca biguttula biguttula), whitefly (Bemisia tabaci), mealybug (Paracoccus marginatus) attacking brinjal. Neem seed kernel extract, Mehogoni seed extract, Tamarind fruit extract, Bonkolmi leaf extract, Biskatali leaf extract, Tobacco leaf extract, Mustard seed extract and untreated control plots were set in Randomized Completely Block Design (RCBD) with 3 replications. The population of aphid, jassid, whitefly and mealybug were gradually decreased with plant age in respective of treatments. The lowest number of aphid, jassid, whitefly and mealybug (5.33, 3.33, 4.33 and 2.33 before fruiting stage and 12.67, 10.67, 11.67 and 9.67 during fruiting stage) per 5 leaves/plant were observed in neem seed kernel extract treated plots. The number of leaves and branches/plant, number of fruits/plant, length, diameter and weight of individual fruit were found the highest in neem seed kernel extract @ 20g/l treatment. The same treatment gave the highest yield (29.58t/ha) and increased 41.10% yield over control. The maximum net return (330071 tk/ha) and the highest benefit cost ratio (2.28) was also observed in neem seed kernel extract. Bishkatali leaf extract showed the similar performance in all regards against on aphid, jassid, whitefly and mealybug on brinjal. Bonkolmi leaf extract also gave the satisfactory result in reducing aphid, jassid, whitefly and mealybug infestation and increasing brinjal yieldItem STUDY ON THE INCIDENCE OF MAJOR INSECT PESTS OF SOYBEAN AND THEIR MANAGEMENT(Department of Entomology, Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka-1207, 2011-06) SAZIDY, MASUM SHARIFThe experiment was conducted at the experimental Field of Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka during the rabi season from November, 2010 to March. 2011 to study on the major insect pest of soybean and their management. The experiment comprised with seven different insecticides including control treatment viz. Marshal 20EC @ 3mlfL water; Semcap 50EC @ 3m1/L water; Dursban 20EC @ 3ml/L water; Basathrin IOEC @ lml/L water, Fiter 2.5EC@ I mulL water, Sobicom 42513C @ 2 mt/fl. water, Aktara 5G @ 3 mg//L water, Control were used in this study. Soybean var. Shohag was included in this study. A single factor experiment was laid out in Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with three replications. Result revealed that the lowest number of aphid, jassid. whitefly, thrips and pod borer was recorded from T1 (Marshal 20EC @ 3mlIL water) while the height number was in untreated control treatment (TO. The height percent reduction of aphid, jassid, whitefly, thrips and pod borer population over control was also recorded from T1 treatment (use of Marshal 20EC @ 3mlIL water ) as compared to other treatment. The yield of soybean per plot was the height (1.10kg) in T1 (Marshal 20EC @ 3mlIL water) treated plot and lowest yield controled treatment. Similarlay the yield of soybean per hectare was also the height (Il .00 ton) in T, treated plot followed by T7 treated plot and lowest was in controlled treatment (Tg). The findings of present study indicated that Marshal 20EC ® 3mVL water could be used to reduce the incidence of major insect pest of soybean as well as to increase the yield of soybean.Item ECO-FRIENDLY MANAGEMENT OF RICE WEEVIL, SITOPHILUS ORYZAE LINN. USING SOME BOTANICALS AND FUMIGANTS ON STORED RICE(Department of Entomology, Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka-1207, 2011-06) SHARIFUZZAMAN, MOHAMMADTwo experiments were conducted in the laboratory under the Department of Entomology. Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka, Bangladesh during the period from September 2011 to February 2012 to find out the efficacy of some promising botanicals and fumigants applied against rice weevil. Sitophilus oryzac Linn. on stored rice. Under experiment where five botanicals along with one untreated control were used viz, dried neem leaf powder @ 2.5 g/kg rice, dried bishkatali leaf powder @ 2.5 g/kg rice, dried marigold leaf powder @ 2.5 g/kg rice, dried dholkolmi leaf powder @ 2.5 g/kg rice, dried mahogany leaf powder @2 2.5 g/kg rice, and untreated control. In experiment three fumigants along with untreated control treatments were used viz, camphor 1 gm/kg rice, phostoxin tablet 03 200 mg/kg rice, naphthalene @ 500 mg/kg rice and untreated control. Both the experiments were laid out in Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with 4 replications. Among five botanicals, the dried neem leaf powder @ 2.5 gm/kg rice reduced the highest percent of grain infestation by number (65.8 1%) and weight (57.42%) over control during the management of rice weevil. S. oryzae in storage than dried leaf powder of bishkatali. marigold. dholkalmi and mahogany; whereas, the dried mahogany leaf powder reduced showed the least performance in reducing the percent grain infestation by number (32.14% and weight (26.76%) over control. Among three fumigants. camphor Cw 1 gm/kg rice reduced the highest percent of grain infestation by number (73.34%) and weight (76.19%) over control than phostoxin tablet and naphthalcne, where naphthalenc @2 500 mg/kg rice reduced the lowest percent of grain infestation by number (55.15%) and weight (59.96%) over control. Irrespective of botanicals and fumigant based management practices. all fumigants performed superior in terms of the reduction of percent grain infestation and survibility of larvae and pupae of rice weevil than botanicals. where camphor @ 1.0 gm/kg rice grains showed the best performance in controlling rice weevil on rice in storage. Camphor is also acceptable for the consumers in terms of environmental safety point and human health hazards free measures applied against insect pests of stored products. because it is derived from Cinnarnonurn camphora plant.Item PERFORMANCE OF SOME COUNTRY BEAN VARIETIES AGAINST POD BORER,MARUCA VITRATA FAB.IN SUMMER(Department of Entomology, Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka-1207, 2011-06) ALAM, S. M. SHAFIULThe experiment was conducted at the experimental farm of Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka-1207, Bangladesh during April 2011 to November 2011 to evaluate the performance of some country bean varieties against the attack of pod borer in summer. The study was comprised of five varieties; IPSA seam-1, IPSA seam-2, IPSA seam-3, BARI seem-3 and Goalgada. From the present study it was observed that the BARI seem-3 variety of country bean gave the highest result. The variety BARI seem-3 showed highest (14.67 ton ha-1) total yield among the different varieties of country bean used in the present study. This variety (BARI seem-3) performed best results in increasing number of healthy flower for 5 inflorescences (11.00), lowest number of infested flower for 5 inflorescences (0.6667), lowest flower drops (4.333), highest total number of pods (127.3 pods plot-1), increasing number of healthy pods (119.0 pods plot-1), increased rate of length (14.83 cm) and girth (6.867 cm) of 5 healthy pods, highest total weight of healthy pods (758.3 g), lowest number of infested pods (8.333 pods plot-1),increased rate of length (10.90 cm) and girth (6.033 cm) of 5 infested pods, highest total weight of infested pods (93.67 g) over the other varieties. The variety IPSA seam-1 showed the least performance regarding all the parameters. Whereas, IPSA seam-3 variety gave the second best performance regarding the above parameters including the second highest yield (10.67 ton ha-1).Item MANAGEMENT OF WHITEFLY,BEMISIA TABACIGENN.IN TOMATOBY INTERCROPPING(Department of Entomology, Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka-1207, 2011-06) ISLAM, MD. ARIFULA field experiment was conducted in the experimental field of Sher-e-Bangla Agriculture University tofind out the effect of intercropping on the management of whitefly (Bemisia tabaci Genn.) in tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum Lin.) during November 2010 to April 2011. The crop combinations were tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum Lin.) + garlic (Allium sativum), tomato + radhuni (Trachyspermum roxburghianum), tomato + mouri (Foeniculum vulgare), tomato + methi (Trigonella foenium-graecum), tomato + radish (Raphanus sativum), tomato + coriander (Coriandrum sativum) and Sole tomato (control). The experiment was laid out in a Randomized Complete Block Design with three replications. Significantly, the lowest number of infested plant/plot (5m2) (0.00, 0.67 and 1.67 at 40, 80 and 115 DAT respectively), lowest number of leaf curl infested plant/plot (0.67), lowest number of white fly/plant (2.67, 4.50 and 5.33 at 40, 80 and 115 DAT respectively), highest number of healthy plant/plot (5m2) (12.00, 11.33 and 10.33 at 40, 80 and 115 DAT, respectively), highest number of total natural enemy/plant (3.33), highest healthy tomato yield (16.00 t/ha), lowest infested tomato yield (1.00 t/ha), highest total tomato yield (17.00 t/ha), highest relative yield (1.80 t/ha), highest tomato equivalent yield (17.69 t/ha) and highest gross return (Tk. 621600.00/ha) were recorded in tomato + garlic intercropping system. But in case of total number of other insect pest/plant the lowest (1.33) was achieved from Tomato + radhuni intercropping system. In terms of percent (%) reduction or increase over control, the highest reduction on number of infested plant/plot (5m2) (100%, 83.25% and 74.96% at 40, 80 and 115 DAT respectively), number of white fly/plant (77.75%, 72.73% and 74.21% at 40, 80 and 115 DAT respectively), number of leaf curl infested plant/plot (81.74%), highest percent (%) increase of healthy plant/plot (5m2) (28.62%, 41.63% and 93.81% at 40, 80 and 115 DAT respectively) and total number of natural enemy/plant (226.47%) over control were recorded in tomato + garlic intercropping system. As a result the treatment combination of tomato + garlic was the best treatment followed by tomato + methi, tomato + radhuni, tomato + mouri, tomato + radish and tomato +coriander where sole treatment (control) gave the lowest performance in turns of gross return.Item STUDY ON THE INCIDENCE OF THE INSECTAND MITE PESTS ON DIFFERENT VARIETIES OF ROSES(Department of Entomology, Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka-1207, 2011-06) RAZIB, NUR MOHAMMADThe study was conducted at the farm of Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka during the period from April to December 2011 to determine the incidence of the insect and mite pests on different varieties of roses. The experiment included twelve varieties of roses viz. Wild rose, Crazy love bi-color, Yellow star, Missing love, Compassion, Charming lady, Dream bangle, Sleepy moon, Sweet doll, Moon light, Sweet love and Mini moni. Each variety represents as one treatment. The experiment was laid out in Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with three replications. Incidence of pest viz. aphid, mite, whitefly and Japanese beetle showed significant variation due to the effect of varieties. Among the varieties, Sweet Love was tolerant of pests and the minimum number of aphid; number of mite, number of whitefly and number of Japanese beetle were recorded at vegetative and flowering stages. Varieties of rose significantly influenced the incidence of pests as well as growth characteristics of rose indicating minimum number of infested leaves per plant, minimum number of infested branch per plant and minimum number of infested flower per plant on Sweet Love variety. Sweet Love variety showed tolerant to pest of rose and gave better yield among the all varietal treatments while sweet doll variety graded as susceptible due to the lowest performance regarding pest incidence and infestation.Item HOST PREFERRENCE AND CHEMICAL CONTROL OF MANGO MEALYBUG (DROSICHA MANGIFERAE GREEN)(Department of Entomology, Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka-1207, 2011-06) RAHMAN, MD. BABLURThe experiment was conducted at Entomology laboratory and Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University campus Dhaka during the period from from March, 2011 to May, 2012 to study host preference and chemical control of mango mealybug. Six chemical insecticides viz. Lamdacyhalothrin (Fiter 2.5EC), Chlorpyrifos (Dursban 20EC), Cypermethrin (Ripcord 10EC), Imidacloprid (Bamper 200SL), Dimethoate (Dimetheon 40 EC), Thiamethoxam (Aktara 25WG) were tested field recommended dose on different stages of mealybug. In field, the experiment was laid out in randomized complete block design (RCBD) and in laboratory it was set in completely randomized design (CRD) with three replications. The major hosts of mealybug are mango, jackfruit, banana, redgram, papaya, cotton, mulberry, guava, tomato, turkey, berry, brinjal, teak, berry, chilli, marigold etc. Major parts of the plant in where infestation occurs were inflorescence, succulent leaf, lower surface of leaf mid rib, petiole, leaf bud etc. Maximum infestation occurs in mango, jackfruit, banana and papaya with 100 percent infestation rate followed by brinjal, strawberry, chilli and marigold. Immature stages of the plant are more susceptible. The highest mortality (100%) was found in thiamethoxam treated insect of 1st instar of mango mealybug in both field and laboratory condition. In 2nd and 3rd instars nymph, chlorpyrifos was most effective. In adult stage, it is more difficult to control mealy bug by chemical treatment. The experiment compared with seven different chemicals and botanical pesticide including control treatment viz. Dursban 20EC @ 2 ml L-1 of water, Ripcord 10 EC @ 3.0 ml L-1 of water, Diazinon 60EC @ 3.5 ml L-1 of water, Marshal 20EC @ 3 ml L-1 of water, Suntap 50SP @ 3 ml L-1 of water, Neem oil @ 2 ml L-1 of water, Control were used in this study. The experiment was laid out in Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with three replications.. The lowest flower and pod infestation was recorded in Marshal 20EC treated plots. The same treatment also produced the tallest plant, maximum number of leaves plant-1 and number of branch per plant. These results indicate that the Marshal 20EC @ 3 ml L-1 of water showed the better performance in managing the pod borer of mungbean as well as on growth and yield of mungbean.
