Item EFFECT OF FERTILIZER ON GROWTH AND YIELD OF SWEET POTATO AT FARMER FIELD AT JAMALPUR, BANGLADESH(DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURAL BOTANY, SHER-E-BANGLA AGRICULTURAL UNIVERSITY, DHAKA -1207, 2020-06) LATIF, TANVIR MOHAMMAD ABDULPotato is one of the priority vegetable crops in the highlands of Eritrea growing as a key component in the livelihood systems of farmers. Potato requires a variety of balanced plant mineral nutrients for growth and development without which yield and qualities of tubers are reduced. Potato growers in Bangladesh commonly use both organic and inorganic fertilizer to support crop growth. However this assumption is based on the result obtained from recent years finding’s. As a result the yield and quality of potato produced in Bangladesh is very low as compared with international standards. Therefore the present experiment was conducted to assess the effect of different fertilizers levels on growth and productivity of potato varieties at Jamalpur, Bangladesh. The experiment was conducted in factorial Randomized Complete Block Design with twelve treatment combinations of four varieties (V1: Annou Beni, V2: Annou Kougane, V3: Kokei 14 Go and V4: BARI Sweet potato12) and three fertilizer application (T0: No chemical fertilizer and no compost, T1: BARI fertilizer dose, and T2: Maruhisa dose (Chemical fertilizer + improved compost)) replicated thrice. The results of the study showed that V4 variety and T2 had significant effect on growth and yield parameters. Plant height, leaf number per plant and branch per plant were higher in V4 variety (plant height 21.33cm, leaf number per plant 24.44 and number of branch per plant 5.0 respectively), T2 fertilizer application, and V4T2 treatment. The highest plant height, number of leaf and number of branch per plant were shown in 100 days treatment for V4T2 treatment. The result also indicated that V4T2 (V4 variety treated with T2 fertilizer) produced significantly highest tuber length (19.43 cm), tuber diameter (18.70 cm) and tuber weight (1.01 kg) per plant, and tuber yield of 15.65 t/ha. The yield analysis result revealed that maximum yield of sweet potato was obtained from the application of T2 fertilizer on V4 variety than other varieties. On the whole, it gives an impression that using T2: Maruhisa fertilizer and V4 (BARI Sweet potato12) will have good influence on growth and tuber yield.Item EFFECT OF LEAF CUTTING ON MORPHO-PHYSIOLOGY AND YIELD OF SELECTED RICE VARIETIES(DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURAL BOTANY, SHER-E-BANGLA AGRICULTURAL UNIVERSITY, DHAKA -1207, 2020-06) BARMAN, TONUSREEThe present investigation entitled “Effect of leaf cutting on morpho-physiology and yield of selected rice varieties” was conducted from February to June, 2019 at the Research Farm of SAU, Dhaka, Bangladesh. The experiment comprised of two factors; viz. Factors A: Two rice varieties(BRRI dhan29 and BRRI hybrid dhan2) and Factor B: Leaf cutting (Flag leaf cutting, Flag leaf + 3 rd leaf cutting, Penultimate leaf + 3 rd leaf cutting, all leaves cutting without flag leaf, all leaves cutting and Untreated control). The experiment was laid out in spilt plot with three replications. Different treatment combinations showed significant differences due to their interaction effect on morphological parameters, physiological parameters, yield attributes and yield. Considering all leaf cutting treatments the tallest plant (98.22 cm), maximum number of tillers hill -1 (20.56g), leaves hill -1 (22.78g), total dry mater (13.64 g), leaf area index (2.34 cm ), stomatal conductance (0.49 mmol CO 2 m -2 s -1 ), SPAD (45.62), total spikelet panicle (174.9), weight of 1000 grain (27.19 g), grain yield (5.81 t ha -1 ), straw yield (6.48 t ha ) and harvest index (46.83%) were found in BRRI dhan29 variety. Whereas, maximum sterile spikelet panicle 1 (35.50) and spikelet sterility (21.15%) were found in BRRI hybrid dhan2 variety. Considering both varieties the tallest plant (99.50 cm), maximum total number of tillers hill (25.00), number of leaves hill -1 (26.17g), total dry mater (20.42 g), leaf area index (2.95 cm ), stomatal conductance (0.55 mmol CO 2 m -2 s -1 ), SPAD (46.17), grain panicle -1 (147.50), total spikelet panicle -1 (175.5), effective tillers hill -1 (8.33g), spikelet panicle -1 (149.8g), weight of 1000 grains (28.97 g), grain yield (7.73 t ha -1 ), straw yield (9.35 t ha -1 ) and harvest index (48.60%) were found in L 0 (Untreated control). Whereas, maximum sterile spikelet panicle (47.50g) and spikelet sterility (45.72%) were found in L 5 (All leaves cutting).Consiering the combination of varieties and leaf cutting the tallest plant (104.3 cm), maximum number of tillers hill (26.67g), number of leaves hill -1 (27.67g), total dry mater (21.50 g), leaf area index (2.95 cm ), stomatal conductance (0.57 mmol CO 2 m -2 s -1 ), SPAD (46.67), number of grain padnicle (151.67g), total number of spikelet panicle -1 -1 -1 -1 -1 (241.7g), weight of 1000 grain (29.63 g), number of grain panicle (8.13g) and straw yield (9.47 t ha -1 ) were found in BRRI dhan29 + Untreated control. Whereas, the maximum number of sterile spikelet panicle -1 (47.67) and spikelet sterility (42.45%) were found in BRRI dhan29 +Untreated control. From this study it can be concluded that, BRRI dhan29 performed well in case of leaf cutting treatments than BRRI hybrid dhan2. Beside this, Untreated control treatment performed great than the other treatments. -2 -1 -1 -2 -2 -1Item EFFECT OF TEXTILE WASTEWATER ON PHYSIOLOGICAL ATTRIBUTES, GRAIN QUALITY AND YIELD OF RICE(DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURAL BOTANY, SHER-E-BANGLA AGRICULTURAL UNIVERSITY, DHAKA -1207, 2020-06) BULY, BILKISH AKHTERThe present investigation to study the effect of textile wastewater on physiological attributes, grain quality and yield of rice” was conducted from February, 2019 to June, 2019 at the Research Farm of Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka, Bangladesh. The experiment comprised of two factors; viz. Factors A: Two rice varieties (BRRI dhan29 and BRRI Hybrid dhan2) and Factor B: Five different concentration of textile waste water (80%, 60%, 40%, 20% industrial wastewater and no wastewater (0%)). The pot experiment was laid out in 2 factors Randomized Complete Block Design with three replications. Different treatment combinations expressed significant differences due to their interaction effect on morphological, physiological parameters, yield attributing traits and yield. In case of varietal performance, the taller plant (90.40 cm) and more sterile spikelet panicle -1 (30.13) were observed in BRRI dhan29 variety. Grater total dry mater (14.84 g), absolute grain growth rate (6.91), leaf area (34.31cm 2 ), SPAD value (46.13), number of spikelet panicle -1 (200.6), weight of 1000 grain (24.60 g), grain yield (3.91 t ha -1 ), straw yield (4.12 t ha -1 ) and harvest index (48.42%) were found in BRRI Hybrid dhan2 variety. Among the waste water treatments, the tallest plant (91.33 cm), the maximum total number of tillers hill (27.00), number of leaves hill -1 (28.00), dry mater (19.97 g), absolute grain growth rate (7.10), leaf area (38.53 cm 2 ), SPAD value (48.13), total number of spikelet panicle -1 (283.5), weight of 1000 grain (26.63 g), grain yield (5.26 t ha -1 ), straw yield (5.40 t ha -1 ), harvest index (49.35%) were recorded from T 0 (no waste water). Whereas, maximum sterile spikelet panicle -1 (37.68) was recorded from T 1 (using 80% industrial waste water for irrigation). The tallest plant (93.33 cm), the maximum number of total tillers hill -1 (27.67), number of leaves hill -1 (29.33), dry mater (21.41 g), absolute grain growth rate (8.24), leaf area (39.47 cm 2 ), SPAD value (49.13), total number of spikelet panicle -1 (335.5), weight of 1000 grain (28.00g), grain yield (5.40 t ha -1 -1 ), straw yield (5.58 t ha ) and harvest index (49.52%) were recorded from the treatment combination V 2 (BRRI Hybrid dhan2 + no waste water). Whereas, maximum sterile spikelet panicle -1 (39.42) was recorded from the treatment combination V 1 T 1 (BRRI dhan29 + using 80% industrial water for irrigation). T 0 -1Item EFFECT OF SEEDLING AGE ON TILLERING, PHENOLOGY AND YIELD OF RICE IN AMAN SEASON(DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURAL BOTANY, SHER-E-BANGLA AGRICULTURAL UNIVERSITY, DHAKA -1207, 2020-06) ROY, DIPAAn experiment was conducted at the central research field of Agricultural Botany, Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University (SAU), during June to November 2018 to study the effect of seedling age on tillering dynamics, phenology and yield contributing characters of modern T. Aman rice varieties. The varieties were, V 1 =BRRI dhan 79, V 2 =BRRI dhan 80, V 3 =BRRI dhan 87 and V 4 =BRRI dhan 90 and seedling age, S 1 = 25 Days, S 2 = 35 Days and S 3 = 45 Days. The experiment was laid out in a Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with three replications. The tillering pattern, phenological and yield contributing characters of modern T. Aman rice were significantly influenced by different varieties, seedling age and their interactions. At 25 DAT the highest (97.64 cm) plant height was found in BRRI dhan 87 and the lowest for BRRI dhan 79. Similar result was observed for 35 and 45 DAT as well where the plant height was 105.3, 112.1 cm for BRRI dhan 87. Treatment combination V 1 S 1 (V 1 = BRRI dhan 79 and S 1 = 25 old seedling) gives the highest number of tillers hill -1 (16.33) at 35 DAT and 45 DAT follows the similar trend. For the number of non-productive tiller hill -1 , treatment interaction V 3 S 1 (V 3 = BRRI dhan 87 and S 1 = 25 old seedling) provided the highest number (2). Seedling age had significant effect on days to 100% maturity. BRRI dhan 80 took the longest time for 100% maturity 140.33 DAS, and BRRI dhan 90 acquired lowest days (115.33 DAS). 25 old seedlings of BRRI dhan 90 gave the highest filled grain hill -1 (2042g). 25 45 old seedlings of BRRI dhan 90 provided the highest number of unfilled grain hill (705g). 25 old seedlings of BRRI dhan 80 gave the highest (4236 kg) and BRRI dhan 79 gave the lowest (3003.1 kg) grain yield ha -1 respectively. 45 old seedlings of BRRI dhan 87 showed the highest straw yield ha -1 (9222.7 kg). BRRI dhan 80 showed the highest harvest index (36.80%) and BRRI dhan 87 exhibited the lowest (31.54%). BRRI dhan 80 performed better with 25 days old seedlings in relation to tillering, phenology and yield contributing characters in Aman season. -1Item RESPONSE OF SOME TOMATO VARIETIES TO WATER STRESS AT DIFFERENT FRUITING STAGES(DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURAL BOTANY, SHER-E-BANGLA AGRICULTURAL UNIVERSITY, DHAKA -1207, 2020-06) ARSHAD, FAHIMAn experiment was conducted at the Central Research Farm of Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University (SAU), Dhaka during October 2018 to March 2019 to study the water stress in different tomato variety. The experiment consisted of two factors: varieties as V 1 =Mintoo HYV, V 2 =BARI Tomato-4 variety and V 3 =BARI Tomato-14 variety, and Different levels of water stress as treatments T 0 : Control (no stress), T 1 : Stress at early fruiting stage, T 2 : Stress at mid fruiting stage and T 3 : Stress at late fruiting stage. The two factors experiment was laid out in Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with three replications. For plant height at 30 DAT for the variety V 2 gives the highest plant height (47.58 cm) and lowest for V 1 (31.83 cm). The maximum leaf area was recorded at flowering stage for treatment V 1 T 0 . At flowering stage of 30, 45 and 60 DAF days after flowering, the highest SPAD values (62.12, 59.83 and 62.7, respectively) was obtained from V 1 . At 45 DAF T 2 shows the highest SPAD value (61.87). % Moisture of was drastically reduced due to water stress as V 1 with the control treatment shows highest moisture level of 94.67% and for V 3 with the treatment of late fruiting stage water stress gives the least moisture level of 84%. The highest dry matter content of leaf in plant. V 1 T 0 with the control treatment shows highest dry matter content of 4.57% and for V 2 T 2 with the treatment of late fruiting stage water stress gives the least dry matter content of 2.60%. Highest number of fruit drops due to early fruiting stage water stress as for V 1 T 1 36 fruits drops but its shows less effect for late fruiting stage water stress. The highest weight of individual fruit 67.83 g was found from V 3 T 0 . The highest yield plant -1 (2.15 kg) was recorded from V 3 T 0 , while the lowest yield (1.16 kg) was found from V 1 T 1 . The highest fruit yield (89.29 t ha -1 ) was recorded from V 3 T 0 , while the lowest fruit yield (16.83 t ha ) was found from V 1 T 1 . Based on the findings of the present study, it may be reported that water stress has remarkable influence on morpho-physiology and yield attributes of tomato. Overall performance of BARI Tomato-14 indicates it can be cultivated without application of sufficient irrigation. T 0 T 3 -1Item MORPHOLOGICAL AND YIELD CHARACTERS OF DIFFERENT TOMATO (Lycopersicon esculentum L.) GENOTYPES AS INFLUENCED BY DROUGHT STRESS(DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURAL BOTANY, SHER-E-BANGLA AGRICULTURAL UNIVERSITY, DHAKA -1207, 2020-06) SULTANA, MAHMUDAAn experiment was conducted at the farm of Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka, during the period from October 2018 to February 2019, to find out the morphological and yield characters of different tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum L.) genotypes as influenced by drought stress. Three varieties viz. V (BARI tomato-2), V 2 (BARI tomto-5) and V 3 (BARI tomato-7) and four drought stress viz. T 1 (control; no stress), T 1 (Drought stress at early fruiting stage), T (Drought stress at mid fruiting stage) and T 3 2 (Drought stress at late fruiting stage) were considered for two factors experiment under the present study. Results showed that the variety, V (BARI tomato-7) gave the best result regarding yield (60.96 t ha -1 0 3 ) under no stress (T ) condition compared to V 1 (BARI tomato-2) and V (BARI tomto-5) even under drought stress regarding T 1 2 (Drought stress at early fruiting stage), T (Drought stress at mid fruiting stage) and T 3 2 (Drought stress at late fruiting stage) the highest yield was obtained from V 3 (BARI tomato-7) (43.72, 56.87 and 68.08 t ha , respectively) compared to performance of other varieties under drought stress. Considering relative performance on total dry weight plant -1 (shoot + root), V 1 T 3 , V 2 T 3 -1 and V showed better performance. So, it can be decided that the variety V 1 3 T 3 (BARI tomato-2), V (BARI tomto-5) and V (BARI tomato-7) can be considered as more tolerant against drought stress but V 3 3 (BARI tomato-7) showed best performance in terms of best morpho-physiological parameters and yield. Treatment T (Drought stress at late fruiting stage) showed better result on growth and yield performance whereas drought stress at early fruiting stage to till harvest (T 1 3 ) was the most affected fruiting stage considering. Regarding combined effect of variety and drought stress, V (drought stress at late fruiting stage with variety BARI tomato-7) gave best performance regarding morpho-physiological and yield performance excluding control. 3 T 3 0 2Item GROWTH AND YIELD PERFORMANCE OF TEN SELECTED RICE VARIETIES IN AMAN SEASON(DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURAL BOTANY, SHER-E-BANGLA AGRICULTURAL UNIVERSITY, DHAKA -1207, 2020-06) MAMUN, MD. ABDULLAH ALAn experiment was conducted at the Experimental Field of Agricultural Botany Department, Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka-1207, Bangladesh, during June, to November, 2019 to evaluate the growth, yield and yield attributing characteristics of ten Aman rice varieties of Bangladesh namely; BRRI dhan 80, BRRI dhan 79, BRRI dhan 70, BRRI dhan 56, BRRI dhan 54, BRRI dhan 53, BRRI dhan 52, BRRI dhan 51, BRRI dhan 41 and BRRI dhan 40. The experiment was laid out in a Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with three replicates. Parameters on, growth parameter viz. plant height and number of tillers hill -1 (at different days after transplanting); yield contributing characters such as effective tillers hill -1 , panicle length, number of grains panicle , filled grains panicle -1 , thousand grain weight, grain yield, straw yield, biological yield and harvest index were recorded. The plant height and number of tillers hill at different days after transplanting varied significantly among the varieties up to harvest, the tallest plant (123.70 cm) was recorded in BRRI dhan 70 and the shortest (81.13 cm) was found in BRRI dhan 41. The maximum number of tillers hill -1 (45.60) was observed in BRRI dhan 70 and the minimum (20.40) in BRRI dhan 52. All of the parameters of yield and yield contributing characters differed significantly at 1% level except grain yield, biological yield and harvest index. The maximum number of effective tillers hill ii -1 (43.76) was recorded in the variety BRRI dhan 70 while BRRI dhan 40 produced the lowest effective tillers hill (17.53). The highest (133.81) and the lowest (42.69) number of filled grains panicle -1 was observed in the variety BRRI dhan 70 and BRRI dhan 40 respectively. Thousand grain weights were the highest (26.45 g) in BRRI dhan 70 and the lowest (18.88 g) in BRRI dhan 53. Grain did not differ significantly among the varieties but numerically the highest grain yield (5.01 t ha ) was found in the variety BRRI dhan 54 and the lowest in BRRI dhan 41 (3.78 t ha -1 -1 -1 -1 -1 ).Item EFFECT OF SUBMERGENCE ON THE REPRODUCTIVE STAGE AND YIELD OF DIFFERENT AMAN RICE VARIETIES(DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURAL BOTANY, SHER-E-BANGLA AGRICULTURAL UNIVERSITY, DHAKA -1207, 2020-06) MOBARAK, MD. HOSNEThe experiment was conducted at the Agricultural Botany field of central research farm of Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka, during the period from June 2018 to December 2018 to find out the effect of submergence on the reproductive stage and yield of different Aman rice varieties. Four Submergence conditions at reproductive stage viz. S 0 – Control (No submergence), S 1 – Submergence for 4 days, S 2 - Submergence for 7 days, S 3 - Submergence for 10 days and five varieties viz. V 1 = FR13A, V 2 = BRRIdhan 52, V 4 = BRRIdhan 46, V 5 = BINAdhan 12 were used as treatment of the experiment. The pot experiment was laid out in Split Plot Design having two factors and replicated four times. Significant effect was found in case of different submerged conditions, varieties and their interaction. In Interaction effect it was found that the highest plant height, number of leaves and number of tillers per plant, SPAD value, no. of leaf before and after emergence of panicle were recorded from the S 0 (Control treatment with variety BRRIdhan 52). The highest leaf, stem and root (18.6 g, 22.20 g and 5.02 g, respectively) dry weight were recorded from the treatment S 0 at harvest. The highest no. of effective tillers and filled grains (13.85 and 150.39) and the lowest number of ineffective tillers and unfilled grains (2.05 and 20.51) were recorded from the S 0 V 3 . The highest grain yield, straw, biological yield (4.81, 6.17 and 10.98 t ha ) and harvest index (43.84 %) were recorded from the S 0 V 3 (Control treatment with BRRIdhan 52) and the lowest (1.70, 4.23 and 5.99 t ha -1 ) were recorded from S 3 V 2 (Submergence for 10 days in BR 5). Therefore, it is concluded that BRRIdhan 52 was superior in Aman season in consideration of growth and yield attributes among the mentioned five varieties with submerged condition. BRRIdhan 52 ultimately leads to the higher dry matter production. Panicles hill -1 , effective tiller, filled grain and 1000-grain weight are the determinants for the higher grain yield of the BRRIdhan 52. = BR5, V 3 V 3 V 3 -1Item EFFECT OF PANICLE INITIATION STAGE SUBMERGENCE ON THE REPRODUCTIVE BEHAVIOR AND YIELD OF DIFFERENT RICE VARIETIES(DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURAL BOTANY, SHER-E-BANGLA AGRICULTURAL UNIVERSITY, DHAKA -1207, 2020-06) JAHAN, NUSRATA pot experiment was carried out at the research farm of Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka with four replications following randomized complete block design during Aman season of 2018 to find out the effect of panicle initiation stage submergence on plants morphological and physiological characters. The experiment comprised of two factors as follows: factor A: variety (four tolerant varieties, V - FR 13A, V 3 - BRRI dhan51, V 4 - BRRI dhan79, V 5 - Binadhan-11 and one susceptible V - BR5), factor B: four submergence treatments (S 0 - control, S - 4 days submergence, S 2 - 7 days submergence, S 3 1 - 10 days submergence). Study reflected that all the parameters were significantly influenced by combined effect of variety and submergence except plant height at 20, 40 DAT and at harvest, 1% panicle emergence stage and 100 grain weight plant -1 . The highest number of tillers plant , 1%, 50%, 100% panicle emergence stage, number of ineffective tillers plant , number of unfilled grains plant -1 , number of unfilled grains panicle and weight of unfilled grains panicle -1 were found in the treatment V 2 S . The highest plant height, SPAD value after desubmergence were found in V 2 S 1 3 . The highest number of fresh leaves plant -1 , total biomass plant -1 was found in V 1 S . The highest number of filled grains plant -1 and panicle -1 were found in V 2 S 0 0 . The highest number of rotten leaves plant -1 , effective tillers plant -1 , panicle length plant -1 -1 , panicle weight plant , oven dry weight of leaf blade plant -1 ,oven dry weight of leaf sheath with stem plant , oven dry weight of root plant -1 were found in V 3 S 3 , V 1 S 3 , V 5 S treatment respectively. The highest weight of filled grains plant 0 , V 4 S 0 , V 1 S 2 -1 , V and 100 grains weight plant -1 were found in V 4 S 0 and V 1 S treatment. As grain yield is the ultimate goal of rice production so the variety which shows less reduction despite being submerged can be suggested for cultivation. The lowest reduction (17.91%) in yield compared to control was found in BRRI dhan51 followed by Binadhan-11 (18.29%). But when submergence duration is more than 7 days Binadhan-11 can be suggested which tolerates submergence up to 10 days. Though the weight of filled grains plant 1 was highest in BRRI dhan79 but its ultimate yield reduction is more (31.78%) than other tolerant varieties due to the effect of panicle initiation stage submergence. 2 -1 -1 S 2 1 and V 5 2 -1 -1 S 0 -1Item EFFECT OF BORON ON MORPHO-PHYSIOLOGICAL CHARACTERISTICS, GROWTH AND YIELD OF AROMATIC RICE(DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURAL BOTANY, SHER-E-BANGLA AGRICULTURAL UNIVERSITY, DHAKA -1207, 2020-06) AKTER, MOST. SHARMINAn experiment was organized on effect of Boron on morpho-physiological characteristics, growth and yield of Aromatic rice (BRRI Dhan 38) at central field of Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka-1207, during the period from July, 2018 to December, 2018. There were altogether 9 treatments with 3 replication consisting both soil and foliar application of boron including control. Boron was used as boric acid (H 3 BO 3 ). The treatments were as follows 1. No application of B (T 1 ) 2. Soil application of B at transplanting (T 2 ) 3. Soil application of B at tillering (T 3 ) 4. Soil application of B at flowering (T 4 ) 5. Soil application of B at grain formation (T 5 ) 6. Seedling roots dipping in B solution (T 6 ) 7. Foliar application of B at tillering (T 7 ) 8. Foliar application of B at flowering (T 8 ) and 9. Foliar application of B at grain formation (T 9 ).The experiment was laid out in a Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with three replications. Data on different growth, physiological and yield contributing parameters were recorded. The highest plant height was (144.33cm) observed in T 9 1 where lowest was 135.47cm found from T 7 was 24.33 which was found from T 6 .
