    LOSSES OF SELECTED FRUITS AND VEGETABLES AT CONSUMERS’ LEVEL

    The study was conducted to assess the losses of selected fruits (Mango, Jackfruit and Papaya) and vegetables (Tomato, Brinjal, Cabbage and Cucumber) at consumers’ level; and to explore the association and relationship between income of the consumers and their losses of selected fruits and vegetables. Data were collected from 384 consumers of 10 locations of Dhaka city with the help of a pre-tested interview schedule during the period from July to December, 2012. Findings revealed that the average losses of the selected seven fruits and vegetables of the consumers was 6.95%. Among 3 selected fruits, the losses were 8.69%, 7.59% and 7.08% for mango, jackfruit and papaya respectively, while among four selected vegetables losses were 7.51%, 9.94%, 4.18%, 3.64% for tomato, brinjal, cabbage and cucumber respectively. Chi-square test revealed that average losses of consumers of these selected seven crops had significant association with their income. Out of seven crops, losses of six crops (mango, jackfruit, papaya, tomato, brinjal and cabbage) of the consumers individually had significant association with their income. Spearman rank correlation test revealed that average losses of consumers of these selected seven crops had significant negative relationship with their income. Out of seven crops, losses of six crops (mango, jackfruit, tomato, brinjal, cabbage and cucumber) of the consumers individually had significant negative relationship with their income.

    ADOPTION OF WHEAT CULTIVATION BY THE FARMERS OF SELECTED VILLAGES OF KAZIPUR UPAZILLA UNDER SIRAJGANJ DISTRICT

    The purpose of the study was to determine and describe the extent of adoption of wheat cultivation by the farmers. Attempts were also made to describe some of the selected characteristics of the farmers and to explore the relationships between the selected characteristics and their adoption of wheat cultivation. The study was conducted at six villages namely; Bawaikhola and Khukshia from Gandhail Union, Singrabari and Khudbandi from Kazipur Union and Natuarpara and Panagari from Natuarpara Union of Kazipur Upazila under Sirajganj District. Data were collected from 126 farmers who were randomly selected as the sample of the study by using random sampling method. The researcher herself collected data through personal contact with a well structured pretested interview schedule during the period from 01 to 31 March, 2013. The findings revealed that highest 40.48 percent of the respondents had low adoption of wheat cultivation, while 34.92 percent had medium adoption and the rest 24.60 percent had high adoption of wheat cultivation. Pearson’s Product Moment Correlation co-efficient (r) was computed to explore the relationships between the selected characteristics and their adoption of selected wheat varieties. The correlation analysis indicated that Education, Extension media contact, Cosmopoliteness, Knowledge about wheat cultivation, Attitude towards wheat cultivation and Innovativeness had significant positive relationships with the adoption of wheat cultivation. Age, Farm size and Annual family income had non-significant positive relationships with the adoption of wheat cultivation. On the other hand, Input cost had non-significant negative relationships with the adoption of wheat cultivation

    ADOPTION OF INTERCROPPING WITH JACKFRUIT BY THE FARMERS OF BHALUKA UPAZILLA UNDER MYMENSHING DISTRICT

    The main purpose of the study was to determine and describe the extent of adoption of intercropping with jackfruit by the farmers in two selected unions of Bhaluka Upazila under Mymenshing District. Attempts were also made to describe some of the selected characteristics of the intercrop farmers and their relationship with their adoption of intercropping. Data were obtained from 117 randomly selected farmers from total of 503 intercrop growers of selected villages of two unions Kachina and Habirbari. An interview schedule was used for collecting data during the period of 2 May to 26 May, 2013. The findings of the study indicate that majority (82.9 percent) of the growers had low adoption while 15.4 percent had medium adoption and 1.7 percent had high adoption of intercropping with jackfruit. Correlation analysis indicates that among the selected characteristics education, farm size, income from jackfruit and intercrop, cosmopoliteness and innovativeness showed significant relationships with their adoption of intercropping with jackfruit. On the other hand, age, received advice on intercropping and crop diversification shows no significant relationship with their adoption of intercropping with jackfruit.

    USE OF VEGETABLE CULTIVATION TECHNOLOGIES BY THE FARMERS

    The main purpose of the research work was to determine the use of vegetable cultivation technologies by the farmers. Attempt was also made to explore the relationship between selected characteristics namely age, education, farm size, annual income, availability of inputs, year of experience of vegetable production, innovativeness, training exposure, risk orientation of the farmers and their use of vegetable cultivation technologies in vegetable cultivation. Data were collected randomly from selected 112 farmers of twelve villages of Haibatpur union of Sadar Upazila under Jessore District by using a presented interview schedule. Appropriate scales were developed in order to measure the variables. Descriptive statistics such as mean, standard deviation, range and percentage were used to describe the variables. The highest proportion (81.3 percent) of the farmers had medium use while 9.8 percent had low use and only 8.9 percent had high use of vegetable cultivation practices. Correlation test revealed that education, farm size, annual income, innovativeness and training exposure had positive relationship with their use of vegetable cultivation technologies in vegetable cultivation, while age and 11 farming experience had negative relationship with their use of vegetable cultivation technologies.

    FARMERS’ KNOWLEDGE AND PRACTICE ON POND FISH FARMING

    The major purpose of this research study was to determine farmers’ knowledge and practice of pond fish culture and also to explore the relationships between 10 characteristics of the pond farmers and their knowledge and practice of pond fish culture. The study was conducted in 4 villages of Kaijuri union of Faridpur district. The populations of pond farmers in these villages were 253, from where 101 samples were drawn by using random sampling technique. An interview schedule was used for data collection. Knowledge and practice of pond fish farming was determined by a validated test. The data were collected during 20th March to 12th April 2013. Appropriate scales were developed in order to measure the variables. Descriptive statistics such as mean, standard deviation, range and percentage were used to describe the variables under consideration. Correlation test was used to ascertain the relationship between the concerned dependent and independent variables of the research work. The majority 44.6 percent of the pond farmers’ possessed medium knowledge, 25.7 percent of the pond owners possessed high knowledge and only 16.8 percent of the pond owners had low knowledge and 12.9 percent of the farmers possessed very high knowledge. About 61.4 percent of the pond farmers had medium practice, while 27.7 percent farmers had low practice and only 10.9 percent farmers had high practice. Age, pond size, commercialization and training exposure of the pond farmers had positive significant relationship with farmers’ knowledge on pond fish farming, while problem faced had negative relationship. In case of farmers’ practice pond size, commercialization and training exposure had positive significant relationship and problem faced had negative relationship. The pond owners faced such major problems as: proper marketing facilities, poor communication system, natural calamities, shortage of pond water in dry season, insufficient credit and low price of pond fish in pick period.

    FARMERS’ KNOWLEDGE ON POSTHARVEST PRACTICES OF VEGETABLES

    The purpose of this study was to determine the farmers’ knowledge on post harvest practices of vegetables and explore the contribution of the selected characteristics of the vegetable growers on their knowledge on postharvest practices of vegetables. The selected characteristics were age, level of education, family size, farm size, vegetable cultivation area, experience in vegetable cultivation, annual family income, annual income from vegetable cultivation, commercialization of vegetables, training exposure on vegetable cultivation, adoption of postharvest practices and problem faced in vegetable cultivation. Data were gathered from 109 vegetable growers of six villages of Belgachi Union of Alamdanga Upazila under Chuadanga district by using a pretested interview schedule. For harmonious representation from each village 30 percent vegetable growers were selected as the sample by using stratified random sampling method. Stepwise multiple regression was used to examine the contribution of the selected characteristics of the vegetable growers on postharvest practices of vegetables. The findings revealed that majority of the respondents (56 percent) had medium knowledge on post harvest practices of vegetables, while 8.3 percent had low knowledge and 35.8 percent had high knowledge. Hence, more than half (64.30 percent) of vegetable growers had low to medium knowledge on postharvest practices of selected vegetables. Stepwise multiple regression exposed that adoption of postharvest practices, problem faced in vegetable cultivation, experience in vegetable cultivation, training exposure on vegetable cultivation, level of education had significant contribution on their knowledge on post harvest practices of vegetables. The standardized partial ‘b’ co-efficient of the 5 independent variables formed the equation contributing to 19.70 percent of the total variation on knowledge on postharvest practices of vegetables. Farmers faced higher problems in ‘lower price of vegetables’ followed by ‘high price of inputs’ and ‘disease attack’.

    PROBLEM FACED BY THE SUB ASSISTANT AGRICULTURAL OFFICERS IN TECHNOLOGY TRANSFER

    The main objectives of this study were to assess the extent of problem faced by the Sub Assistant Agricultural Officers (SAAOs) in technology transfer and to explore the relationship between the selected characteristics of Sub Assistant Agricultural Officers and problem faced by them in technology transfer. All the five upazillas of Narayanganj district namely, Narayanganj sadar, Bandar, Sonargaon, Araihazar and Rupganj were selected as the study area. Spearman's Rank Correlation Coefficient was used to test the relationship between the selected eight characteristics of SAAOs and their problem faced in technology transfer. The findings revealed that 70.50% of the SAAOs belonged to high problem facing category while 27.90% and 1 .60% respondents were under medium and low problem category respectively. Speannan's Rank Correlation Coefficient analysis also revealed that training exposure, job satisfaction and use of internet showed negative significant relationship with the problem faced in technology transfer. Based on Problem Faced Index (PFJ), "lack of required teaching aid" ranked the highest problem followed by "lack of transportation facilities" and "lack of required technical knowledge".

    CONSTRAINTS FACED BY THE FARMERS IN 1PM PRACTICES IN RICE CULTIVATION AT NABINAGAR UPAZILJA UNDER BRAHMANBARIA DISTRICT

    The main focus of the study was to determine constraints faced by the farmers in 1PM practices in rice cultivation and to explore the relationships between the constraints faced by the farmers in 1PM practices and their selected characteristics. The study was conducted at Ratanpur and Sreerampur unions of Nabinagar Upazila under Brahmanbaria rice farmers who were proportionate randomly selected as the sample of the study from an update list of District. Data were collected from 107 1534 rice farmers that was prepared with the help of Sub-Assistant Agriculture Officers of the study area. The researcher himself collected data through personal contact with a well structured pretested interview schedule during the period from 10 June to 10 July, 2013. The study revealed percent) of the respondents faced medium constraints in 1PM practices, while the 17.76 percent of the respondents confronted high constraint and that the highest proportion (75.70 percent of the respondents faced low constraints in 1PM practices. Pearson's Product Moment Correlation co-efficient (r) was computed to explore the relationships the rest 6.54 between the constraints faced in 1PM practices by the farmers and their ten selected characteristics. The correlation analysis indicated that, education, training received in 1PM practices. extension media contact, cosmopoliteness and knowledge on 1PM of the rice farmers had significant negative relationships with their constraints faced in [PM practices. On the other hand, age, total family members, rice cultivation area, annual family income and agricultural experience of them had no significant relationships with the constraints faced in 1PM practices. Finally, a constraint faced index (CFI) was made of twelve selected constraints among which the constraints. "lack of technical knowledge in 1PM practices" followed by "lack of teelmical support in 1PM practices" and "unavailability of inputs of 1PM practices".

    ADOPTION OF HOMESTEAD VEGETABLE PRODUCTION TECHNIQUES BY THE RURAL WOMEN

    The main purpose of the study was to determine the extent of adoption of homestead vegetable production techniques by the rural women, explore the relationship between the selected characteristics of the rural women and their adoption of homestead vegetable production techniques and compare among the problem faced by the rural women in homestead vegetable production techniques. The selected characteristics of the rural women were age, education, farm size, annual family income, training exposure, decision making ability, organizational participation, agricultural knowledge extension contact, and problem faced in homestead vegetable production. The study was conducted in five randomly selected villages from 5 unions under Daganhhuiyan Upazila of Feni District. Data were obtained from 95 randomly selected rural women of five villages namely Purbochadrapur. Alaearpur. Chandipur, Jogotpur and Momarijpur. Pearson's correlation co-efficient was used to explore the relationship between the selected characteristics of the respondent rural women and their adoption of homestead vegetable production techniques. Findings showed that the majority of the respondent women had medium adopters (40 percent) in homestead vegetable production techniques adoption, while 35.79 percent of the respondents having low adoptions. Only 24.21 percent of the respondents had high homestead vegetable production adopters. Among the ten selected characteristics, extension contact, organizational participation, farm size and agricultural knowledge had significant positive relationship with the adoption of homestead vegetable production techniques. The other selected characteristics such as age, level of education, training exposure, decision making ability and problem faced in homestead vegetable production had no significant relationship with the adoption of homestead vegetable production techniques

    ADOPTION OF BRRI DHAN 47 BY THE COASTAL FARMERS OF NOAKHALI DISTRICT

    The objectives of this study were to determine the extent of adoption of BRRI dhan 47 in Noakhali district. Data were collected from randomly selected 100 farmers via pre-tested interview schedule during September 20 to October 10, 2012. After data collection, age, education, family size farm size, annual family income, organizational participation, extension media contact and knowledge on rice cultivation were coded for processing and analysis. Percentage, mean, standard deviation were calculated. Coefficients of correlation (r) were computed to find out the relationship between adoptions of BRRI dhan 47 with the selected socio-economic characteristics of farmers. Majority of the respondents were middle aged (48%), having primary level education (461/o), medium family size (60%), small farm size (51%), medium annual income (661 /o), very low organizational participation (65%), low innovativeness (72%), medium extension contact (64%), and medium knowledge on rice cultivation (70%). Majority (53%) of the respondents had low adoption of BRRI dhan 47 whereas 42 % medium and only 5% under high adoption category. Farmers education, farm size, annual income, innovativeness, extension contact, and knowledge on rice cultivation showed significant and positive relationship with adoption of BRRI dhan 47. Shattering problem, cost on irrigation, natural calamities were the major problems faced by the farmers in cultivating BRRI dhan 47. Proper extensions activities are needed to disseminate BRRI dhan 47 to bring the uncultivated areas under rigorous cultivation for ensure a better livelihood on the coastal farmers.
