    EFFECT OF BIOPESTICIDES ON MAJOR INSECT PESTS OF CABBAGE AND THEIR NATURAL ENEMIES

    The study was conducted in the central farm of Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Sher-e-Bangla Nagar, Dhaka during October 2018 to March, 2019 to know the effect of biopesticides on major insect pests of cabbage and their natural enemies. Six treatments were used under the experiment. They were T 1 = Spinosad, T 2 = SNPV (Spodoptera litura nuclear polyhedrosis virus), T 3 ii = Spodolure trap, T 4 = Spodolure trap + Spinosad spray, T 5 = Spodolure trap + SNPV spray and T 6 = untreated control. The experiment was laid out in a Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with four replications. Results revealed that the lowest number of infested leaves by flea beetle (0.33/ 5 plants), tobacco cutworm (0.33/ 5 plants), semilooper (0.33/ 5 plants), diamondback moth (1.33/ 5 plants) and aphid (7.50/ 5 plants) were found in T 4 treatment (Spodolure trap + Spinosad). In case of incidence of natural enemies, the highest number of lady bird beetle (8.00/plot) and spider (8.60/plot) was also found from T 4 (Spodolure trap + Spinosad) treatment compared to untreated control. The highest percentage of healthy plants (91.67%), highest weight of healthy cabbge head plant -1 (1.20 kg), marketable cabbage head plot (19.48 kg) and marketable yield of healthy cabbage head (45.08 t ha ) was found in T 4 (Spodolure trap + Spinosad) treatment. Spodolure trap in combination with Spinosad spray may be considered as effective practice for the management of cabbage insect pests and conservation of natural enemies.

    EVALUATION OF SOME REDUCED-RISK INSECTICIDES FOR THE CONTROL OF LEGUME POD BORER MARUCA VITRATA FAB IN COUNTRY BEAN COUNTRY BEAN COUNTRY BEA

    INTEGRATED MANAGEMENT OF CUCURBIT FRUIT FLY ON ASH GOURD

    A field experiment was conducted in the experimental field of Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University to find out the effective as well as hazards free management practice(s) of cucurbit fruit fly infesting ash gourd cultivated during Kharif I season from February 2018 to June 2018. There were six treatment including untreated control. The treatments were as follows T 1 (comprised of setting up of pheromone trap replaced at 1 month interval), T 2 (comprised of setting up of poison bait trap @ 2 g Sevin 85 WP mixed with 100 g mashed sweet gourd and 10 ml molasses replaced at 4 days interval), T 3 (comprised of setting up of banana pulp trap @1 ml malathion 57EC with 100gm mashed banana pulp @ 4days interval), T 4 (comprised of spraying of Neem oil @ 3 ml neem oil and 10 ml Trix mixed with 1 liter of water @ 7 days interval), T 5 (comprised of covering fruit with polythene bag at 1 poly bag per fruit @ 4 days interval); T 6 (comprised of untreated control). The experiment was laid out in Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with four replications.Covering fruit with polythene (T 5 ) contributed to produce the highest number of healthy fruit (14.50 fruit/plot); total weight of healthy fruit (103613gm/plot) and reduced the maximum fruit infestation over control (93.75%). The maximum single fruit weight over control (49.46%) was recorded in T 5. The higher temperature (34.5 C) negatively affected the capturing of adult fruit fly for poison bait trap because of drying up of bait materials, but not affected on the adult capturing capacity of pheromone trap. The highest benefit cost ratio (42.24) was also found for T 5 and the lowest BCR (19.23) for T 3 . Considering the social acceptance and environmental safely point of view, T 5 comprising of covering fruit with polythene bag was the most effective management practices in reducing the fruit fly infestation.     COMPARATIVE STUDY FOR THE MANAGEMENT OF BRINJAL SHOOT AND FRUIT BORER AND EPILACHNA BEETLE WITH BOTANICALS AND SOME SELECTED CHEMICAL INSECTICIDES

    A field experiment was conducted in the experimental field of Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University to find out the effective as well as hazards free management practice(s) of brinjal, cultivated during Rabi season (November, 2017 to March, 2018). The experiment was laid out in Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with three replications. The experimental treatments were T 1 comprised of spraying of neem oil @ 3 ml neem oil and 10 ml trix mixed with 1 liter of water @ 7 days interval; T 2 comprised of spraying of neem seed kernel extract @ 5.0 ml/L of water at 7 days interval; T 3 comprised of spraying of bioneem plus @ 3.0 ml/L of water at 7 days interval; T 4 comprised of spraying of Marshal 25 EC@ 3.0 ml/L of water at 7 days interval; T 5 comprised of spraying of Ripcord 20 EC @ 1.0 ml/L of water at 7 days interval; T 6 comprised of spraying of Imitaf 20 SL @ 0.1 ml/L of water at 7 days interval; T 7 comprised of spraying of Actara 25 WG @ 0.2 gm/L of water at 7 days interval; T 8 comprised of untreated control. Treatment T 7 contributed to reduce the highest number of brinjal shoot and fruit borer (2.17 brinjal shoot and fruit borer/plant), number of bore (1.12 bores/five fruits), number of infested shoot (2.08 infested shoot/five plants), number of infested fruits caused by BSFB (1.39 fruit/plant), percent fruit infestation at early fruiting stage (4.93%), mid fruiting stage (10.00%) and late fruiting stage (13.84%) in number and early fruiting stage (19.52%), mid fruiting stage (16.11%) and late fruiting stage (15.31%) in weight, number of epilachna beetle (1.14 epilachna beetle/plant), percent leaf and plant infestation by epilachna beetle (9.20%) and (8.33%), percent of edible portion of infested fruit (90.49%), single fruit weight (39.00 gm) and yield (35.36 ton/ha). T 1 also contribute to reduce the incidence of infestation by considering the above mentioned parameters. The yield found in the T 1 treated plots was 28.58 ton/ha. Considering the environmental hazard and effect of incidence of beneficial arthropods T 1 was the best treatment against brinjal shoot and fruit borer and epilachna beetle of brinjal.

    ECO-FRIENDLY MANAGEMENT OF SUCKING AND OTHER FOLIAR INSECT PESTS OF BRINJAL

    A field experiment was conducted in the experimental field of Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University to find out the effective environment friendly management practice(s) of brinjal, cultivated during Rabi season (November, 2017 to March, 2018). The experiment was laid out in Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with three replications. The experimental treatments were T (spraying of neem oil @ 3 ml neem oil and 10 ml trix mixed with 1 liter of water @ 7 days interval); T 1 (spraying of neem seed kernel extract @ 5.0 ml/L of water at 7 days interval); T 3 2 (spraying of bioneem plus @ 3.0 ml/L of water at 7 days interval); T (spraying of Marshal 25 EC@ 3.0 ml/L of water at 7 days interval); T (spraying of Actara 25 WG @ 0.2 gm/L of water at 7 days interval); T 6 5 (spraying of Imitaf 20 SL @ 0.1 ml/L of water at 7 days interval); T 7 (spraying of Ripcord 20 EC @ 1.0 ml/L of water at 7 days interval) and T (untreated control). Treatment T contributed to reduce the highest number of leaf hopper, aphid, epilachna beetle, leaf roller, percent leaf infestation and plant infestation by leaf hopper, aphid, epilachna beetle, leaf roller were 5.72 leaf hopper/plant, 2.79 aphid/plant, 1.14 epilachna beetle/plant, 2.12 leaf roller/plant, 13.45%leaf/ five plant, 12.03 %leaf/ five plants, 9.20% leaf/five plants, 5.66% leaf/five plants, 13.89% plant/plot, 13.89% plant/plot, 8.33% plant/plot, 8.33% plant/plot respectively. Similarly, T 7 also contribute to reduce the number of leaf hopper (6.91), aphid (3.89), epilachna beetle (2.03), leaf roller (3.03), percent infestation of leaf and plant respectively by them. According to eco-friendly management T 1 showed the highly incidence of beneficial arthropods like lady bird beetle (5.21 lady bird beetle/plant), field spider (3.53 field spider/plant), ants (4.05 ants/plant) etc. in the brinjal field throughout the growing season. T 7 1 showed best performance for high single fruit weight (39.00 gm) and yield (25.57 ton/ha) of brinjal. T also showed more or less similar performance in case of single fruit weight (34.66 gm) and yield (24.59 ton/ha). Considering the environmental hazard and effect of incidence of beneficial arthropods T 1 was the best treatment against sucking and other foliage insect pests of brinjal. 1 4 8

    EFFECTIVENESS OF SOME INSECTICIDES FOR MANAGEMENT OF POTATO INSECT PESTS

    The present study was carried out on the effectiveness of some insecticides for management of potato insect pests. There were seven treatments such as T 1 (Pheromone Trap +Neem seed kernel extract), T 2 (Fipronil), T 5 (Pymetrozine + Nyten pyram), T 6 (Diazinon), T 3 (Carbofuran), T 4 (Cartap + Acetamiprid) and a check T 7 were evaluated on potato crop at the Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University in Dhaka city during Rabi season from October 2017 to March 2018. The insecticides were applied at initial stage of crop growth and early mid stage of potato plants. The data were collected by counting cut plant by cutworm , by counting number of infested leaves by aphids by counting number infested tuber and weighing of infested tuber by cutworm, by counting the number of virus infected plants showing leaf roll and mosaic symptoms plant transmitted by aphids in each plot. The lowest number of cut plants was recorded in T 3 and T 6 (1) treatment and lowest in T 7 (6) . The lowest number of infested leaves was counted in T 1 (1.67%) and the highest number of infested leaves was recorded in T 7 (17.95%) . At 15, 40, 60 days after emergence of seedling, the lowest number of virus infected plants was 1.33, 1.67 and 2.33 counted in T 1 and the highest number of virus infected plants was 4.33, 12.00 and 20.67 recorded in T 7 respectively. The lowest number of infested tuber was counted in T 1 1.33) and the highest number of infested tuber was counted in T 7 (4.00). Average seasonal infestation was the lowest in T 1 (Pheromone trap + neem seed kernel extract) followed by T 6 (Cartap + Acetamiprid) and T 5 (Pymetrozine + Nyten pyram) the highest in check plot. (

    BIOLOGY AND DAMAGE ASSESSMENT OF PAPAYA MEALYBUG, PARACOCCUS MARGINATUS

    Two experiments were conducted to study the biology and damage assessment of papaya mealybug. Biology of papaya mealybug studied in the laboratory of the department of Entomology and damage assessment was conducted in the farm, Sher-e- Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka-1207 during June, 2017 to August, 2018. In damage assessment study, T is covered with fine net and sprayed with imidacloprid, at 15 days interval to avoid mealybug infestation and T was infested by mealybug. The adult female laid 97-150 eggs with an average 122.8. The ovipositional period and incubation period was 6.0 ± 1.22 days and 5.8 ±1.09 days respectively. The female has three instars and male has four instars nymphs. At 1 2 instar male and female could not be distinguished. The average duration, length and breadth of 1 st instar nymph were 4.8± 0.83 days, 0.41± 0.08 mm, and 0.25 ± 0.03 mm. The average duration of 2 nd , 3 rd instar female nymph and adult female was 4.2±0.83 mm, 3.4±0.54 mm and 10± 2 days respectively. The average length of 2 nd , 3 rd female nymph and adult female was 0.69± 0.03 mm, 1±0.14 mm and 1.94±0.27 mm respectively. The average breadth of 2 , 3 rd female nymph and adult female was 0.44±0.02 mm, 0.72±0.05 mm and 1.38 ±0.05 mm respectively. The average duration of 2 nd , 3 rd instar, pupa and adult male was 3.6± 0.54 days, 2.8 ± 0.83 days, 3.6 ±0.54 days and 2.4 ±.54 days respectively. The average length of 2 instar, pupa and adult male was 0.70±0.06 mm, 0.85±0.02 mm, 0.94±0.04 mm and 0.98 ±0.03 mm respectively. The average breadth of 2 nd , 3 rd instar, 4 th instar and adult male was 0.38 ±0.04 mm, 0.41 ±.02 mm, 0.26 ±0.03 mm, and 0.26±0.01 mm respectively. Mealybug infestation reduced plant height (34.35%), number of leaves per plant (86.08%), petiole length (53.31%), number of flowers per plant (86.23%), number of fruits per plant (89.43%), individual fruit weight (88.01%) as well as total fruit yield per plant (98%). nd 1 st nd , 3 rd

    DEVELOPMENT OF EFFECTIVE INTEGRATED MANAGEMENT PACKAGE OF SWEET POTATO WEEVIL

    The present study on integrated management package of sweet potato weevil infesting sweet potato was conducted during rabi season (Nov-2017 to Mar-2018) in the experimental field of Department of Entomology at Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka. The variety of sweet potato BARI Mistialu-8 was used as test crop. The experiment consisted of six treatments and one untreated control, they are T 1 : Sex pheromone trap + Earthing up one time + Mulching (straw) + One irrigation, T 2 : Sex pheromone trap + Earthing up two times + Two light irrigation , T 3 : Sex pheromone trap + Earthing up three times + Three light irrigation, T 4 : Earthing up two times + Sevin 85WP @ 3g\L of water at 15 days interval (2 times application), T 5 : Earthing up two times + Diazinon 10G @ 15 kg\ha (one time soil application), T 6 : Earthing up two time + Fenthion 2ml\L of water, T 7 : Untreated control. The experiment was laid out in Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with three (3) replications. The result revealed that sex pheromone trap with earthing up three times and three light irrigation (T 3 ) showed the best control measure against sweet potato weevil compared to other treatments. Highest number of sweet potato weevil adult was found in T 7 (9.46 weevil/plot) and highest damage result was observed in T 7 (15.4%). Whereas the lowest number of adult weevil was observed in T 3 (0.392 weevil/plot) and lowest damage was noticed in T 3 (5.04%). At 15 days early harvest, in consideration of infestation level of storage tubers in number and weight basis, the lowest infestation was recorded from T 3 (3.68% and 5.68%), whereas the highest infestation (12.24% and 12.98%) was observed in T 7 . At optimum days harvest, for infestation level of tubers in number and weight basis, the lowest infestation was recorded from T 3 (4.49% and 6.48%), whereas the highest infestation (13.55% and 14.15%) was observed from T 7 treatment. After 15 days from optimum harvest, in case of infestation level of tubers in number and weight basis, the lowest infestation was recorded from T 3 (5.32% and 6.92%), whereas the highest infestation (16.35% and 17.04%) was observed from T 7 treatment. Besides, highest deformed tuber was found in T 7 (11.960%) and lowest in T 3 (2.362%). The highest yield was recorded from T 3 (41.87 t/ha), whereas, the lowest from T 7 (30.28 t/ha) treatment. These findings illustrated that, the Sex pheromone trap with earthing up three times and three light irrigation (T 3 ) treatment was more effective for controlling of sweet potato weevil.

    ECO FRIENDLY PEST MANAGEMANT OF TOMATO

    The experiment was conducted in the farm of Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Sher-e-Bangla Nagar, Dhaka-1207 during the period from October 2018 to March, 2019 to evaluate the ecofriendly pest management of tomato (BARI Tomato-14). The experiment consisted of six different ecofriendly treatment along with untreated control and was laid out in Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with three replications. The seven treatments were T 1 = Untreated control, T = Neemoil suspension spray, T 3 = Garlic oil, T 4 = Black seed oil, T 5 2 = Marigold intercropping, T = Netting at seedling stage, T =Tobacco leaf powder extract spray. The data were statistically analyzed by MSTAT-C and means were separated by Duncan’s Multiple Range Test (DMRT) test at 5% levels of probability. Four insect pests were found in tomato cultivation viz. white fly, aphid, fruit borer and leaf miner. The lowest number of white fly per plant (3.13, 3.01 and 2.49) and the highest control percentage of white fly (87.89, 89.31 and 89.31) was observed in treatment T 7 at vegetative, flowering and reproductive stage. The lowest number of aphid per plant (1.20, 1.20 and 1.01) and the highest control percentage of aphid per plant (94.23, 94.41 and 94.98) was found from treatment T 2 2 at all stages of plant. At the vegetative, flowering and reproductive stage, the lowest number of fruit borer per plant (1.02, 1.61 and 0.90) and the highest control percentage of fruit borer per plant (90.04, 90.65 and 91.59) was found from treatment T 2 . The lowest number of leaf minerper plant (0.69, 0.60 and 0.65) in treatment T and the highest control percentage of leaf minerper plant (93.52, 87.27 and 84.69) was found from treatment T . Number of fruit, Individual fruit weightand yieldof tomato varied significantly due to different treatment and the highest yield (55.28 t ha 2 ) wasobtained from T 2 .Treatment T was the most suitable for controlling white fly, aphid, fruit borer and leaf minerand yield of tomato was also highest in treatment T 2 as compared to other 6 treatments. 2 2 6 -1

    DAMAGE POTENTIALITY AND ECO-FRIENDLY MANAGEMENT OF RED PUMPKIN BEETLE AND CUCURBIT FRUIT FLY ON SQUASH VEGETABLE

    The experiment was conducted to study the damage potentiality and eco-friendly management of red pumpkin beetle and cucurbit fruit fly on squash during the period from October, 2018 to March, 2019. The experiment consisted of seven different treatments vizT = Cultural method 2 1 = Applying Sevin 50 WP @ 1.5g/pit + using vineger trap.T = Mechanical control method at 7 days interval + using Pheromone trap.T = Applying Sevin 50 [email protected]/pit+ Spraying Folithion 50 EC@ 1.0 ml/L of water at 15 days interval.T 4 = Spraying Pychlorex 20 EC @ 1.0 ml/L of water at 15 days interval + using Funnel Pheromone trap.T = Spraying Predator 50 EC @ 1.0 ml/L of water at 15 days interval + using mashed sweet gourd trap.T 6 = Untreated control. The experiment was laid out in Randomized Complete Block Design 7 -1 . The lowest percentage of leaf infestation and long petiole plant -1 4 was at 5, 15, 25, 35, 45 and 55 DAT. At 25,35,45 and 55DAT, the highest number of healthy flowers plant 4 -1 and the lowest percentage of infested flowers 4 4 . At 45 and 55DAT, the highest number of healthy fruit plant and lowest infestation was recorded from T . The highest control percentage of cucurbit fruit fly 5 .
