    A STUDY OF BEEF PRODUCTION SYSTEM IN PENINSULAR MALAYSIA

    Due to slow growth of beef production, it is necessary to find out the way to increase beef production. This study was aimed to estimate future beef production at the existing rate of calving, slaughter and mortality. The ex-post Simulation Matrix (SIMM) model used from the year 1970 to 1996 and ex-ante SIMM model used from the year 1997-2015 in Malaysia. The results indicated that beef production is not profitable and in future beef production will be increased but at slower rate in Malaysia. Female breeding stock of beef population needs to be increased with higher calving rate and lower slaughter rates.

    A COMPARATIVE STUDY ON GROWTH AND YIELD OF SOME ELITE HYBRID RICE VARIETIES IN DRY SEASON

    The experiment was conducted at the research field of Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka, during the dry season (November, 2012 to June, 2013) to evaluate leaf area development, dry matter accumulation pattern and yield of some popular hybrid rice varieties. The experiment comprised of three hybrid varieties (Hira 2, Aloron and Tia) and an inbred variety BRRI dhan 29 with four dates of transplanting (01 January, 16 January, 31 January and 15 February). The experiment was laid out in randomized complete block design with three replications. Leaf area development, total dry matter production, absolute growth rate, yield and yield contributing characters were significantly influenced by the date of transplanting. Leaf area, total dry matter, absolute growth rate were found higher in early transplanted plots. The highest grain yield (6.07 t ha') was recorded from plots transplanted on 16 January due to increased panicles hi\l"' and grains paniclel.Hira 2 exhibited best result on leaf area (LA), absolute growth rate and total dry matter (TDM) production compared to all other studied varieties and thus recorded with highest grain yield (6.40 t ha"). No difference on grain yield was achieved from Hira2 at oI to 16 January transplanting

    ANALYSIS OF NUTRIENT CONTENTS IN CONVENTIONAL AND NONCONVENTIONAL FEED INGREDIENTS AND ITS EFFECTS ON CARP POLYCULTURE PRODUCTION

    A study on proximate composition of conventional and non-conventional fish feed ingredients was carried out involving two separate experiments. First experiment was conducted from April 2010 to September 2010 at the Protein and Enzyme Research Laboratory, Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, Rajshahi University, Rajshahi with a view to determine nutrient (protein, lipid and carbohydrate) content of some feed ingredients i.e. Rice bran, wheat bran, mustard oil cake, Azolla, grass (Cynodon dactylon) and leaf of banana (Musa acuminate) among the feed samples, protein, lipid and carbohydrate content significantly varied from 6.18±0.13 (banana leaf) to 30.53±0.40% (oil cake), 3.06±0.09 (banana leaf) to 13.33±0.10% (oil cake) and 32.95±0.29 (oil cake) to 66.12±0.47% (wheat bran), respectively. Second experiment was conducted during the period from April 20 II to September 20 II at Alampur village of SOOarUpazila under Kushtia district, Bangladesh with a view to evaluate the fish production and economics under different conventional and non-conventional feed based carp polyculture systems. There were three replications for each treatment. In this experiment, treatment To(Semi-intensive ponds fed with feeds like rice bran, wheat bran and oi1cake as control) varied more significantly (P<0.05) for the mean values of total yield but in terms of total cost, total return, net benefit, net profit margin and eBR treatment T, (Azolla fed pond) was best. Therefore, the findings indicate that weeds (non-conventional feed items) are moderately nutritive and low cost effective diets for fish production.

    PROFITABILITY AND RESOURCE USE EFFICIENCY OF MUSTARD PRODUCTION IN SIRAJGANJ DISTRICT, BANGLADESH

    The study was conducted in Sirajganj district of Bangladesh to determine the profitability and resource use efficiency of mustard production. Both descriptive statistics and functional analysis was done to achieve the objectives of the study. The findings of the study suggested that the total cost of mustard production was Tk. 51105.8 per hectare of which 52.6% was variable cost. Net return and BeR was found to be Tk. 34556.9 per hectare and 1.6? respectively. Urea and TSP had positive and significant effect on the yield of mustard. Farmers in the study area use different input inefficiently. Farmers in the study area also face some constraints like high price of inputs, non-availability of quality seed, low price of mustard etc. regarding mustard production. Financial support and crop management training are needed to farmer to increase the production of mustard in the study area.

    PRODUCTIVITY AND RESOURCE USE EFFICIENCY IN RICE FARMING IN SYLHET DISTRICT, BANGLADESH

    Sylhet is the Northeast part of Bangladesh and its geographical location is little bit different from other districts in Bangladesh. Due to heavy rainfall and extensive march area (hoor), rice is the only mono crop in the study area. Therefore, in this study, an investigation has been made to find out the input productivity and resource use efficiency of rice farm in Sylhet District. In total 120 farmers were selected randomly from three thanas of Sylhet District named Gohainghat, Fenchugonj and Balagonj, where equal number of samples were collected from each thana. Data were collected through farm survey by using a suitable pretested questionnaire. Cobb-Douglas Production Function, Marginal Value Product (MVP) and Marginal Factor Cost (MFC) are used for analysis. To find out productivity and resource use efficiency Cobb Douglas production function are used. The use of fertilizers is statistically significant at 1%, 5%, and 10% level of significance for all categories of farms. The use of inputs like human labour, seed, irrigation, insecticides, power tiller/animal power are also statistically significant but not for all the crops. Findings of the study revealed that the farmers were inefficient of the use of resources, generally, inputs such as fertilizer, seed and insecticides were under-utilized in Boro Paddy under three categories of farms (animal, power and pooled farm). The ratios of the MVP to the MFC were less than unity for Boro and Aman Paddy of all categories of farms except Boro Paddy in animal operated farm. The results show that there is need for making inputs such as HYV seeds, fertilizer, insecticides and machinery affordable and accessible to the farmers so as to improve efficiency. Moreover, policies that encourage the creation of alternative employment opportunities to absorb the excess labour used in rice production should be formulated.

    ASSESMENT OF SEASONAL ABUNDANCE OF ORIENTAL FRUIT FLY, BACTROCERA DORSALIS (HENDEL) AND DEVELOPMENT OF ARTIFICIAL LARVAL DIET FOR ITS MASS REARING

    Seasonal variations of oriental fruit fly, Bactrocera dorsalis (Hendel) were monitored in different agricultural field of Ganakbari, Savar, Dhaka during January 2012 to December 2012 and artifitial larval diet was prepared in the laboratory of Insect Biotechnology Division (ISO), Institute of Food and Radiation Biology (IFRS), Atomic Energy Research Establishment (AERE), Savar, Dhaka for possible field application of Sterile Insect Technique (SIT). Air temperature, relative humidity and rainfall were recorded during the study period. High level of oriental fruit fly population was found throughout the year except February and mean monthly capture was the highest in May. In case of efficiency of artifitiallarval diet the highest hatching percentage and the lowest larval duration was observed from the 4.87-4.89 pH of the diet. But based on the highest number of pupa, flier percentage, adult emergence percentage and lowest pupal duration diet having 5.22-5.26 pH was found to be economical and suitable for mass rearing of B. dorsalis.

    DETERMINANTS AND INVESTMENT BEHAVIOR OF FOREIGN REMITTANCES IN RURAL BANGLADESH

    Flow of investments' remittances in Bangladesh exhibited a continuously increasing trend over the last 30 years in both absolute and relative terms. It is now well-documented that foreign remittances have an utmost importance in the socioeconomic development of Bangladesh economy, especially in the rural areas. This paper has explored the determinants and investment behavior of foreign remittances in rural Bangladesh. The study has used the data and information on 502 rural international remittance receiving households from 30 clusters over six former divisions of Bangladesh. The present study have been identified the predictors of household investments from remittances by using multiple binary logistic regression analysis along with typical descriptive statistical tools and techniques. The distribution of investment at household level along with the necessary elements are drawing Lorenz curve. The Gini concentration ratios are also estimated at 0.497 for the overall households, which indicate a higher inequality of investment among the survey households. The results suggest that about 50% of the investment of the community is concentrated in the hands of few peoples and the rest of the investment is all distributed among the major portion of the households of the study area.

    GENETIC CHARACTERIZATION OF SESAME VARIETIES THROUGH RAPD FINGERPRINTING TECHNIQUE IN BANGLADESH

    DNA fingerprinting helps to document plant genetic resources of a particular species through banding patterns and plays an important role in genetic conservation and breeding program. Four varieties of sesame had been fingerprinted by three decamers of randomely amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) markers. A total of 21 PCR amplification products were found by using 3 decamer primers (OPA-09, OPC-OS and OPL-07) among which 14 bands were polymorphic. The size of the amplification products ranged from 347bp to 1224bp for OPA-09, 317hp to IS92bp for OPC-OS and 423bp to 1024bp for OPL- 07 primer. Within the individuals of a single variety no genetic variation was observed. UPGMA dendogram based on Nei's (1972) genetic distance indicated segregation of 4 varieties of sesame into two main clusters: T 6 with BARI Til-2 grouped in cluster I and BARI Til-3 with BINA Til I in cluster 2. Molecular characterization of the varieties will provide support for broadening the genetic basis of selective breeding programs.
