    CALCIUM INDUCED CHANGES IN EARLY SEEDLING GROWTH OF RICE (Oryza sativa L.) UNDER SALT STRESS

    Salt stress is a severe limiting factor for rice production worldwide. So a pot experiment was conducted at the research field of the Department of Agroforestry and Environmental Science, Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka during the period from February 2021 to April 2021 to find out the effect of calcium in mitigation of salt stress in BRRI dhan 28 (inbreed) with nine treatments in combination with three doses of NaCl (0 mM, 50 mM and 100 mM) and three doses of CaCl 2 (0 mM, 2.5 mM and 5 mM) in completely randomized design with three replications. Salt stress drastically damaged morpho-physiological attributes and growth performance of rice in dose dependent manner. In contrast use of 2.5 mM CaCl 2 under salt stress had positive impact on plant height, relative growth rate, number of leaves per plant, length of flag leaf, width of flag leaf, fresh weight of plant, dry weight of plant, relative water content (RWC) and SPAD value at 25, 40 and 55 at days after sowing (DAS) under both level of salt stresses. But addition of 5 mM CaCl 2 showed good result under 50 mM NaCl stress only. So, addition of 2.5 mM CaCl 2 in fertilization process might be a solution for rice production under salt stress.

    EFFECT OF N AND P ON THE PERFORMANCE OF SPINACH (Spinacia oleracea) IN ROOFTOP AND FARM

    The experiment was conducted at the rooftop of Soil Science Department and research farm of Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka, during the period from October 2020 to December 2020 to study the performance of spinach in the rooftop and farm. The experiments were laid out in RCBD design with three replications. The study consists of two factors. Factor A: Three levels of nitrogen N₀ (control), N₁ (56 kg ha¯¹), and N₂ (84 kg ha¯¹), and Factor 2: Three levels of phosphorus P₀ (control), P₁ (36 kg P 2 O 5 ha¯¹) and P₂ (57.5 kg P 2 O 5 ha¯¹). Haldibari, local variety seed was used in this experiment. Different growth and yield contributing parameters were recorded to determine the optimum dose of N and P for growing on rooftop and farm. The result reveals that N₁ (56 kg ha¯¹) is optimum dose for growing spinach on both rooftop and farm whereas, P₁ (36 kg P 2 O 5 ha¯¹) and P₂ (57.5 kg P 2 O 5 ha¯¹) are optimum dose for rooftop for farm condition respectively. Among the treatment combination, N₁P₁ (56 kg/ha N + 36 kg/ha P₂O 5 ) seems to be more suitable for getting higher yield in both rooftop and farm.

    SHADE INDUCED EFFECT ON GROWTH PERFORMANCE OF DIFFERENT CAULIFLOWER (Brassica oleracea var. botrytis) VARIETIES

    In agroforestry system, light is a limiting factor for maximum crop production. Therefore, a pot experiment was conducted in the Field Laboratory of the Department of Agroforestry and Environmental Science, Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka- 1207, during the months of October 2020 to March 2021 with three cauliflower varieties viz. V 1 (Chandi), V 2 (Snow White), V 3 (Indian Crown) under four shade treatments/light intensities, [100%, 75%, 50% and 25% light intensity which indicate control (S 0 ), S 1 , S 2 and S 3 , respectively] to evaluate their morpho-physiological and growth performances. Low light stress [mainly 50% light intensity (S 2 ) and 25% light intensity (S 3 )] substantially reduced the germination rate, plant height, plant weight (fresh and dry weight), leaves number, leaf length, leaf width, flowering dates, stem diameter, photosynthetic performance (SPAD value) of different cauliflower varieties. However, considering the obtained findings Snow white variety showed less negative performance than the other varieties under shaded condition. So, among the tested cauliflower varieties Snow white might be suitable for shaded condition with low light intensities.

    MORPHO-PHYSIOLOGY AND YIELD OF TOMATO (Solanum lycopersicum L.) VARIETIES AFFECTED BY DIFFERENT LEVELS OF LIGHT INTENSITY

    Light stress is a limiting factor for crop production, especially in agroforestry system. A pot experiment was conducted at Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka- 1207, during the months of October 2019 to mid-April 2020 in a completely randomized design (CRD) to determine the effect of low light on morpho-physiology and yield of tomato. Three tomato varieties viz. BARI Tomato-2, BARI Tomato-15, BARI Tomato-16 were exposed to four light intensities including 100% (S 0 , control), 75% (S 1 ) , 50% (S 2 ) , and 25% (S 3 ) to evaluate their performances. Light stress (mainly S 2 and S 3 ) substantially hampered the plant growth, development as well as yield. Low light stress primarily reduced the photosynthetic performance of plants which contributes in reduction of plant height, number of primary branches, and leaves of all tomato plants. Moreover, low light intensity negatively affected the fresh and dry weight of tomato. It also decreased the number of fruits, fruit length, fruit diameter, and individual fruit weight in all varieties. As a result, plant wise tomato production was hampered seriously with low yield. In comparison with control, S 1 condition decreased tomato yield per plant by 22.5, 16.9 and 15.3% in BARI Tomato-2, BARI Tomato-15 and BARI Tomato-16, respectively. Under S 2 condition, tomato yield per plant decreased by 38.7, 37.4, and 32.7% in BARI Tomato-2, BARI Tomato-15 and BARI Tomato-16, respectively, in contrast to control. Lastly, S 3 condition decreased tomato yield per plant by 73.1, 67.0 and 62.1% in BARI Tomato-2, BARI Tomato-15, and BARI Tomato-16, respectively, compared with control. From this result, it was clear that BARI Tomato-16 was more tolerant to low light stress than BARI Tomato-2 and BARI Tomato-15.

    PERFORMANCE ANALYSIS OF FLOATING SEEDBED USING DIFFERENT GROWTH PROMOTING FERTILIZERS

    Bangladesh is situated in low lying areas where a reasonable portion remains submerged for 6-9 months in year during and after monsoon which is increasing day by day due to climate change. Therefore this research was conducted to evaluate the floating seedbed output of okra and cucumber in prolonged period (6-9 months) of time at Nazirpur upazila. The experiment was conducted following a Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) involving three treatments with four replications viz. T 1 : control (without organic and inorganic fertilizer), T 2 : Organic fertilizer (cow dung) and T 3 : recommended dose of inorganic fertilizers(NPK). In case of okra, the longest plant height (156.90 cm), maximum number of branches (5.50) and leaves (55.75) were found in the treatment T 3 . Regarding yield parameters, significantly higher number of fruits plant -1 , fruit length (cm), fruit diameter (cm), individual fruit weight (g), fruits weight plant -1 (g) and yield (t·ha -1 ) were 22.00, 16.38 cm, 6.48 cm, 21.67 g, 602.80 g, 12.12 t·ha -1 obtained respectively by applying the treatment T 3 . The lowest output was recorded in control for all the cases. Similar trend of growth and yield were also observed during the cultivation of cucumber under the same treatment conditions. The highest value of BCR (1.07 and 1.63) was recorded from the treatment T 3 for both okra and cucumber respectively. So floating gardening is a sustainable farming method and income strategy for rural householders in coastal flood-prone regions of Bangladesh.

    TREE SPECIES DENSITY ENHANCES SOIL ORGANIC CARBON CONTENT ACROSS DHANMONDI LAKE AREA IN DHAKA CITY

    The present study was conducted to determine the density of tree species and the amounts of soil organic carbon at the area of Dhanmondi Lake in Dhaka city. The research was carried out during June 2021 to January 2022. The MS Excel application was used to organize and analyze all of the data. In this study, total of 22 families were identified. The total number of plants was discovered to be 134. Swietenia mahagoni (Mahagoni), with a total of nine (9) tree individuals, had the highest percentage of tree individuals (6.72%), while an unidentified species and some others had the lowest percentage (0.75%). Height, DBH and canopy of trees were tabulated by different classes with number of trees. All the structural attributes like relative density (RD %), Relative frequency (RF %), Relative Dominance (RDo %) and Important value index (IVI %) were also calculated. For low, medium, and high-density plots around Dhanmondi lake, the average tree density was 2800, 4500, and 6000 trees/ha respectively. The relationship between soil organic carbon (SOC) and tree density were assessed. Soil organic carbon is higher in high density plots than medium and low-density plots. The relationship between SOC and tree density was positive and statistically significant correlated with carbon in the most cases because sometimes it showed negative and non-significant relationship.

    EFFECT OF POTASSIUM AND PHOSPHORUS ON GROWTH AND YIELD OF OKRA IN ROOFTOP AND FIELD

    An experiment was conducted at two locations, the roof of the Biotechnology Department and Agroforestry research farm of Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka, Bangladesh during April 2021 to September 2021 to study the effect of potassium and phosphorus on the growth and yield of okra on rooftop and field. The experiment was conducted in RCBD design with three replications. The MSTAT-C computer package was used for processing and analysis of data. The mean differences were adjusted by Duncan’s Multiple Range Test at 5% level of significance. Three levels of Potassium K 0 : 0 kg K 2 O ha -1 , K 1 : 50 kg K 2 O ha -1 , K 2 : 80 kg K 2 and three levels of phosphorous P 0 : 0 kg P 2 O 5 ha -1 , P 1 : 80 kg P 2 O 5 ha -1 , P 2 O ha : 120 kg P 2 were used as treatments in this experiment. The results showed that application of different levels of potassium plus phosphorus, significantly influenced the growth and yield of okra. In both locations, the maximum mean values were recorded from K 2 O ha -1 with 120 kg P 2 O 5 ha -1 ) treatments whereas the minimum were recorded from K 0 (control). Based on the present results, it can be suggested that the combined use of 80 kg K 2 O ha -1 with 120 kg P 2 O 5 ha -1 increased plant growth and yield of okra in both the locations.

    EFFECT OF MORINGA LEAF EXTRACT ON GROWTH AND YIELD OF TOMATO (Solanum lycopersicum L.)

    The experiment was carried out at Agroforestry Field Laboratory, Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka-1207 during the period from January 2021 to April 2021 to find out “Effect of Moringa leaf extract on growth and yield of Tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.)”. The pot experiment consisted of six treatments viz., T0, T1, T2, T3, T4, and T5 (control, 10 ml, 20ml, 30 ml, 40 ml, and 50 ml concentrations of Moringa leaf extract respectively). This experiment was laid out in Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with four replications. In the case of growth parameters, the highest plant height (62.00 cm) and the number of leaf plant-1 (52) were observed in T5 whereas the lowest result was observed from T0 treatment with plant height (38.50 cm) and the number of leaf plant-1 (27). In terms of yield contributing parameters with Moringa leaf extract, T5 showed the lowest days (39 days) to 1st flowering whereas the highest days to 1st flowering were achieved from T0 treatment at 50 days. The highest fruit number plant-1 (24), individual fruit weight (65 g), and fruit yield ha-1 (70.2 t) was found in the treatment T5 while the lowest number of fruits per plant (8), individual fruit weight (44.78 g), fruit yield ha-1 (31.5 t) was obtained from T0 treatment. Different concentrations of Moringa leaf extract with Tomato plant had a strong positive relation with around all parameters. To base on observed data points, predicted that 50 ml concentrations of Moringa leaf extract will supply the optimum Tomato yield ha-1(70.2 t). This study indicates that the Moringa leaf extract used significantly increased the growth and yield of tomato plants in all the trials with fresh leaves, regular branching, healthy fruits, and regular flowering.

    FARMERS PERCEPTION ABOUT CAUSES OF MONGA AND ADOPTION OF AGROFORESTRY PRACTICES AS A REMEDIES OF MONGA IN KURIGRAM DISTRICT

    Agroforestry practices is very important for socio-economic development in our country and also it contribute a great to combat Monga. The objective of this paper is to explore farmers perception about causes of Monga and adoption of agroforestry as a remedies of Monga and capacities to combat Monga at household level in the Kurigram district of Bangladesh. The agriculture based rural economy, extreme property, high percentage of landless, lack of sufficient caloric intake, unemployment of vast agricultural labor force etc. are the root causes of vulnerability to Monga in the northern regious specifically Kurigram.Data were collected by random sampling method of 150 respondents fron 781 farmers of 10 villages 5 upazilla under Kurigram district by using a pretested interview schedule during October 2019 to December 2019.Findings indicated that the highest portion of farmers had medium to low perception about causes of Monga and adoption of agroforestry practices. Out of 10 selected characteristics of respondents, annual income, effect of life on Monga had positive significance of perception about Monga.Also farming experience, organizational participation, effect of livelihood of farmers had significance about adoption of agroforestry practices. The rest of the variables namely:age,education,family,size,farm size, did not show any significant correlation with the perception about causes of Monga & adoption of agroforestry practices. Relation with causes of Monga and farmers perception is medium to low in char area and rural area than sadar area.High perception about causes of Monga in sadar area.

    EFFECT OF MORINGA LEAF EXTRACT ON GROWTH AND YIELD OF CHILI (Capsicum annuum L.)

    The using of synthetics fertilizers to improve soil fertility and crop yield have adverse effect on soil and environment. Different organic material may use to reduce the use of chemical fertilizers. The main purpose of the study is to evaluate the effect of Moringa leaf extract (MLE) as a growth hormone on growth and yield of chili (Capsicum annum L.). The experiment was carried out at Agroforestry and environmental science research field of Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka-1207 during the period from December, 2021 to May, 2022. This pot experiment was laid out in Randomized block design (RCBD). This experiment comprised of six treatment with seven replications. Treatments were T0, T1, T2, T3, T4, T5 with 0, 15, 30, 45, 60, 75 ml MLE solution respectively. This single factor experiment was done by using chili (BARI Morich-2). The result revealed that different level of Moringa leaf extract showed significant variation on parameters studied during the experiment. The result indicated that T5 treatment showed highest results on plant height (84.72 cm), leaf number (191.78), number of branches (14.0), stem diameter (2.12 cm), days of first flowering (51.42 days), fresh weight of shoot (364.93 g), fresh weight of root (84.22 g), dry weight of shoot (51.48 g), dry weight of root (15.77 g), number of fruits (194.4), length of fruits (11.17 cm), weight of fruits (311.32 g), yield of fruits (19.60 tha-1). The result also indicated that T0 treatment showed lowest growth and yield contributing all the parameters. Growth and yield of chili plant gradually increased with the increased of MLE. It can be stated that higher dose of MLE is positively correlated with growth and yield of chili. So, T5 treatment can recommend to obtain superior growth and yield of chili plant.
