    Call in Promoting EFL Learner Autonomy at the Tertiary Level in Bangladesh

    This research article intends to examine how far Computer Assisted Language Learning promotes the autonomous EFLleaming and how this can be maximized, overcoming the limitations it has in practical fields. An autonomous learner uses his personal ways of learning according to his need and knowledge on the subject At the same time he/she sets his own target and evaluates the improvement. OWL can facilitate and give support to all these aspects. So, in general sense we do assume that GILL should promote autonomous EFL learning. But in the context of Bangladesh we need to find out what are strengths and limitations of CALL activities in facilitating EFL learner autonomy. In this paper the researcher has given ageneral idea of current practices of CALL activities on autonomous language learning. And then he tried to analyze the prevailing limitations of CALL activities to finalize the guidelines later to maximize benefits of EFL autonomous learners. Therese archer has conducted a questionnaire survey to analyze the present scenario of CALL activities to mould a proper guideline to get the best result for EFL autonomous learners of Bangladesh in the tertiary level.

    Masochism: A Means of Survival in The Piano Teacher

    Erika Kohut, the protagonist of Elfriede Jelinek's The Piano Teacher, experiences certain feelings that reflect her masochistic attitude towards life. Masochism, the activity of getting pleasure from being hurt or controlled by another person, dominates Erika's life and it connects her to the world by releasing utter loneliness and estrangement. Erika's escape from self, motivation to escape, link to sexuality gives a platform to reduce her anguish and to cope with the way of the world. Her inner self behaves the way Freud and Lacan scrutinized the psychoanalytic self. She goes through Durkheimian anomie that is the breakdown of social bonds between an individual and the community. She is entangled between the world of sublime and the world of sexual attention and emotional wickedness. This paper is going to deal with masochistic agendas including masochistic desire of pain, submissiveness, domination, helplessness, embarrassing or humiliating experiences and how it relates with the action and experiences of Erika. It will also relate the sphere of gender and masochism along with the analysis of masochism is dominant in feminity or masculinity. The protagonist's relationship with masochism and estrangement are really assisting her in survival or not.

    Factor Analysis: The Challengesin English Listening Skill of Bangladeshi EFL Learners

    The principal purpose of this study is to identify and analyze the factors responsible for poor listening skill of Bangladeshi EFL learners.The study was conducted from 01 March 2015 to 25 May 2017. Thirty-two variables which are mostlyresponsible for poor listening skill are selected from related literature and the researcher’s own experience in teaching EFL learners. Factor analysis has been conducted to reduce the amount of the total variables, to identify the important variables and to arrange them into useful categories. SPSS 16 has been used to analyze the data collected from the primary sources through a complete set of Likert scaled questionnaire. Data for this research have been collected from 142 EFL teachers and 171 MA students studying English Language at 29 public and private universities located in different parts of Bangladesh.

    The Everlasting Shackle of Patriarchy: From Rokeya Sakhawat Hossain to Anita Desai

    It is now over one hundred years that the women are fighting for their emancipation, equal rights and right to decision making from their male counterparts. However, this long struggle seems hardly providing equal rights to women, let alone the emancipation that they seek mainly. Although there has been significant change how women lead their life today from one hundred years ago, the inherent structure of patriarchy still suppresses them. This paper intends to scrutinize the condition of women in selected writing of Rokeya Sakhawat Hossain, a major proponent of feminism during the then British Bengal, and Anita Desai, a contemporary postcolonial writer on feminism in India. The objective of this paper is to prove that the women cannot attain emancipation from patriarchy even if they are provided education and economic freedom.

    Error Analysis in Writing among Non-English Majors at Tertiary Level in Bangladesh

    The study focuses on the impact of error analysis in the writing courses at tertiary level among non-English majors. In Bangladesh, the students of the non-English majors learn to write English through various writing courses. However, their proficiency in writing English is far from being satisfactory. Even after the completion of different language courses similar to English Fundamentals, Composition or other academic writing courses, they end up making numerous errors. In this research, the researcher endeavored to analyze the errors made by different nondepartment majors to discover the roots of errors and also to understand the difficulties students face while avoiding errors. The research was conducted through sample studies and interview questions. For the study 100writing samples were collected from tertiary level students from the renowned private universities in the country. The interview parts in this research reveal the real perspective of students regarding this issue. This research will help the teachers in figuring out why and how the errors occurred and in what ways they can be resolved. The researcher used both qualitative and quantitative data for analysis. The result of the findings has been analyzed and some suggestions have been given on the basis of the research.

    To Live in this World”: An Eco-feminist Study of the Poetry of Mary Oliver

    Maxine Kumin wrote in the “Women’s Review of Books,” that Mary Oliver is an “indefatigable guide to the natural world.” Her verses produce a relieving effect and concentrate on the calm aspects of nature, assiduous Hummingbirds, hunting owls. The present study is an exploration of the relationship between the humankind and the world of nature in the poems of Mary Oliver from an eco-feminist point of view. Ecological feminism or eco-feminism is a term first coined by the French writer Froncoised’ Eaubonne in her book Le Feminismeou la Mort(1974) to denote women’s inherent ability for bringing an ecological revolution to ascertain the survival of human being on earth. It started its journey as a movement in the twentieth century against environmental destruction, suppression and oppression of women. From the origin of the earth, man tries to desert the fertile earth and turns her into a barren land. To free women and nature from the clutches of male dominated society, many nineteenth century women wrote about the local landscape that is often an integral part of their daily life. The close examination of the bountiful objects of nature, plants and animals have established them as a liberating force. Mary Oliver took multifarious forms of nature to expose her clear and poignant observations regarding environment. She also sees earth as an upholder of human life and relationships. Nature and humanity is strongly emphasized through her poems to show a deep alliance between them. The reason I choose the poems of Mary Oliver is because they encourage us to think passionately about the kinship of humans with nature and the immense idea a person can gain in understanding one’s life in a meaningful way.

    The War against Boko Haram in Nigeria covered in Press Releases: Dispersions and Deliberations

    The war against Boko Haram has no doubt thrown Nigerians and the country into a chaotic state. Nigerians and indeed the international community have been perturbed by the seemingly security challenges ravaging the Nation’s peaceful coexistence and her economy. Information on the war whether there are successes or otherwise is what the public wants to be abreast with consistently. This, therefore, is a qualitative study on the fight against Boko Haram and the application of press releases as a communication strategy. The study seeks to examine the Boko Haram insurgency in a nutshell, the content of the press releases as well as its effectiveness. Goal Attainment Theory was used as theoretical framework. In line with the methodology (Discourse Analysis), a total of 35 Press releases issued by the Nigerian Army, Directorate of State Security Services, Defence Headquarters and the Presidency from January 2015-December 2017 were purposefully identified and studied. The study found out that Nigerian Army and other security agencies have adopted the consistent use of press release as a public relations tool which appears to be safer. The press releases are distributed by the Directorate of the Army Public Relations to a significant number of national and international media outlets through a coordinated platform, the social media (Whatsapp and Facebook) and the electronic mail, with attached photographs and sometimes relevant footages (Video). Core Information found out by the study focused on Update on the war against Boko Haram, the successes recorded and highlights of the items recovered from the group members.

    The Poetry of Judith Wright: An Ecocritical Reading

    This paper seeks to explore that the poetry of Judith Wright is an essence of her dynamic and radical ecological thinking. The poet shows an inevitable connection between the human and the natural world in her poetry, and figures out how the natural world is extremely endangered by man. Wright, an ecopoet even before the term was coined, transforms the Australian poetic tradition conveying a new and monumental sense of the land and expressing her deepest concern not only for Australian society but also for the planet. In every phase of her poetic journey, she foregrounds nature as a major part of her subject, and represents the bitter-sweet relationship between nature and man. Therefore, this paper attempts to say that Wright’s poetry is an embodiment of her green writing project. It also focuses that she is a great ecological thinker who not only represents the relationship between the natural world and human one and vice versa but also expresses her deep apprehension for protecting nature from the constant destruction.
