A fast tree based cluster labeling algorithm for Monte Carlo simultaitons
(BRAC University, 2005) Kamal, Marzuk M.; Haque, M. Nasimul
A highly efficient tree based algorithm for studying site or bond percolation on any lattice system is described. Our approach is to identify the connectivity of the lattice sites in a single phase and to reduce the redundant computational load in each lattice update. Efficiency increases due to the creation of a multi-branched tree of the pointers of the cluster numbers at the time of investigation of cluster organization. At the later updates, the computational efficiency increases further as the algorithm would have to work only on the randomly chosen lattice sites or bonds instead of traversing the entire lattice.

The strategic implication of electronic commerce for small and medium sized enterprises (SME)
(BRAC University, 2005) Quader, Mohammed Shahedul; Ahmed, Rubina I.
The objective of this Paper is to examine the strategic implication of Electronic Commerce for small and medium sized enterprises. This paper explores how electronic commerce has the potential to transform the concept of market by changing firms’ business models, business relationships and market structure. By changing firms’ competitive advantages and nature of competition, electronic commerce may have strategic implications for small and medium sized enterprises. From the research undertaken, the paper draws conclusions of how electronic commerce fits into the broader context of their business and its strategy.

Generation of supersonic solitions by earthquake emission in the van Allen rediation belt
    (BRAC University, 2005) Mofiz, U. A.; Battiston,Roberto
The parametric coupling between earthquake emitted circularly polarized electromagnetic radiation and ponderomotively driven ion-acoustic perturbations in the Van Allen Radiation Belt is considered. A cubic nonlinear Schrödinger equation for the modulated radiation envelope is derived, and then solved analytically. Supersonic solitons are found to be generated in the Van Allen Belt which can be a tool for the prediction of a massive earthquake to be followed.

A new approach on the torison and curvature tensors in supermanifolds
(BRAC University, 2005) Ali, Md. Showkat
In this paper geometric space, super space, supermanifold, superconnection, the torsion and the curvature tensors are studied and some new notions of local forms of the torsion and curvature tensors are established, for deriving certain constraints in classical case called the super Bianchi identities.

    The economic impact of E-commerce
(BRAC University, 2005) Hoq, Ziaul; Kamal, Md. Shawkat; Chowdhury, A H M Ehsanul Huda
E-commerce has a significant impact on business costs and productivity. E-Commerce has a chance to be widely adopted due to its simple applications. Thus it has a large economic impact. It gives the opportunity for “boundary crossing” as new entrants, business models, and changes in technology erode the barriers that used to separate one industry from another. This increases competition and innovation, which are likely to boost overall economic efficiency.

Migration, urbanization, industrialization, export promotion and economic development
(BRAC University, 2005) Chowdhury, Mehdi Mahmud
Import substitution was the main trend of industrial and trade policy after the World War Two. This policy in now disfavored and almost all developing countries are at present trying to increase exports to become developed. In this paper we discussed about this issue and linked it with the migration and urbanization problem of the developing world. Economic theory once viewed migration as a tool for economic development as it enables industrial sector to get additional labor. This view has changed but we argued that export promotion will encourage migration and urbanization as export sectors of developing countries are usually manufacture and urban based sectors. We discussed about the policy issues relevant in this situation.

Incorrect F-statistic to test nonhomogeneous hypothesis in bivariate regression analysis
(BRAC University, 2005) Rahman, Mohammad Lutfur
In Regression analysis, an F test can be viewed as a comparison between a full and a restricted model. The most general F formula compares the error sums of squares (SSE’s) of these two models. This F formula is always correct because the SSE comparison is meaningful in all tests. Other formulas use the corrected model sum of squares (SSM) or the coefficient of determination (R2) to compare the full and restricted models. This article gives several examples where the SSM’s or R2’s of the two models cannot be compared, and hence where the use of F formulas based on SSM or R2 would be incorrect. This problem usually arises in tests of nonhomogeneous hypotheses, although it may also appear in other situation.

Contested history of Neo-classical economic models of households in development
    (BRAC University, 2005) Chowdhury, Jahan
The models outlined in this essay were basically put together to help economists analyze household behavior and subsequently propose government policies for poverty reduction. From the arguments posed in the above text, it is clear that government policies should not be based solely on the unitary model because of its failure to analyze intra household relationships and resource distribution.

Factors associated with pregnancy complications during antenatal period: an extended GEE approach
    (BRAC University, 2005) Tomal, J.H.; Khan, H.T. Abdullah; Hossain, M.Z.; Shabuz, M.Z.R.
The purpose of the paper is to examine the factors affecting pregnancy complications during antenatal period of mothers. The study uses data which have been repeated over time i.e., the nature of the data is longitudinal in type. Thus the generalized estimating equation (GEE) method has been employed to identify the factors associated with the pregnancy complications which constitute binary response. The study reveals important findings. Among others, education of mothers, taking special food during pregnancy and desired index pregnancy are found to be negatively associated with pregnancy related complications i.e., lower risk of complication. Patients visit to health workers during antenatal period is positively associated with identifying the causes of pregnancy related complications. Female literacy and maternal morbidity are intertwined in an inverse relationship i.e., improving the former will reduce the latter. Educated women take better care of themselves. It improves their economic power and ensures a better social and legal status. Pregnant women should take special food in order to get rid of pregnancy related complications.

Handloom industry on the way of exticntion: an empirical study over the pre-dominant factors
(BRAC University, 2005) Ghosh, Suntu Kumar; Akter, Md. Shahriar
Handloom industry in Bangladesh is having glorious past, questionable present and blurry future due to a lot of internal and external factors that are acting behind the scene. In this paper, we have identified those predominant factors that are moving the wheels of this industry slowly. And among them, shortage of working capital, high cost of raw material procurement, lack of organizing capability, inadequate technology and efficiency, and lack of policy support are major forces which are bitterly hit the handloom industry.
