    Gendered marginalization of disabled bodies: understanding 'marginalization' as (perhaps) the most dangerous form of oppression

    The essay applies Iris Marion Young's discussion of marginalization as a form of oppression suffered differentially by specific social groups, in relation to women with disabilities. It draws on Young's frame, which desegregates 'oppression', taking it away from theories overarching and systematic structures of racism for example, or patriarchy, presenting instead the concept of oppressed groups as overlapping rather than distinct, and of oppression as multiplex and differentially affecting different social groups. The essay considers women with disabilities in terms of their vulnerability to marginalization, one of Young's five types of oppression.

    Transactional analysis counselling: an introduction

    Transactional analysis is a systematic tool for personal growth and development. In Transactional Analysis counselor does counseling for developing adult ego states of the client. Though all time an individual behaves, thinks and feels from different ego states like as parent, adult or child ego states. Besides these, we can structure our time with the help of different techniques such as withdrawal, activity, rituals, past time, games, rackets and intimacy. There is a contract between client and counselor in the counseling session. By using Transactional Analysis and proper contract client can achieve his goal easily and maintain a peaceful life by improving his adult ego state.

    Free convection and mass transfer flow past an infinite vertical porous plate with dufour and soret effects in a porus medium

    A numerical solution of unsteady free convection and mass transfer flow is presented when a viscous, incompressible fluid flows along an infinite vertical porous plate embedded in a porous medium. Both the Dufour and Soret effects are considered when the fluid is not chemically reacting. Dimensionless velocity, temperature and concentration profiles are displayed graphically for different values of the parameters entering into the problem. The numerical values of the skinfriction coefficient, Nusselt and Sherwood numbers, which are of physical interest, are also tabulated.

    Parsing Bangla using LFG: an introduction

    This paper is intended to introduce LFG (Lexical Functional Grammar) for parsing Bangla. The LFG formalism, which has evolved from extensive computational, linguistic, and psycholinguistic research, provides a simple set of devices for describing the common properties of all human languages and the particular properties of individual languages. This paper provides a set of instructions for using the formulation of LFG rules to parse Bangla. With the information contained in this paper, linguists previously unfamiliar with the striking formalism of this theory should find it possible to interpret and to compose the sorts of rules and lexical items standardly employed in LFG. In this paper we present successful parse of some simple sentences along with some unsuccessful parse of non-grammatical sentences.

    Finite volume methods for solving hyperbolic partial differential equations on curved manifolds

    The natural mathematical arena to formulate conservation laws on curve manifolds is that of differential geometry. Ricci developed this branch of mathematics from 1887 to 1896. Subsequent work in differential geometry has made it an indespensible tool for solving in mathematical physics. The idea from differential geometry is to formulate hyperbolic conservation laws of scalar field equation on curved manifolds. The finite volume method is formulated such that scalar variables are numerically conserved and vector variables have a geometric source term that is naturally incorporated into a modified Riemann solver. The orthonormalization allows one to solve Cartesian Riemann problems that are devoid of geometric terms. The new method is tested via application to the linear wave equation on a curved manifold.

    Linear and nonlinear dynamic conductivity of carbon nanotubes

    Electronic properties of carbon nanotubes are studied. L inear response of dynamic conductivity of both zigzag and armchair nanotubes is analyzed at different temperatures and for different radii of nanotubes in the framework of semiclassical theory. Simpliˇ ed approach is used by introducing the momentum independent relaxation time approximation. At the second stage, the nonlinear response of semiconducting zigzag carbon nanotubes is studied within the same framework. I t is found that the third order response of dynamic conductivity diverges logarithmically with the increase in the radius of Carbon Nanotube. Analytic proof of this result is presented. The validity of the application of semiclassical theory for studying the nonlinear electronic properties of carbon nanotubes is discussed.

    Gravitational waves in a magnetized plasma

    An overview of gravitational wave and its possible detection while propagating in a plasma is given. The linear propagation of gravitational wave in magnetized plasma is considered. It is found that a × polarized gravitational wave excites Alfve′n modes while a + polarized wave excites magneto-acoustic waves propagating parallel to the gravitational wave. In merging binary pulsars gravitational wave energy can be converted into pulsar wind at a large scale.

    Interaction in second language classrooms

    Dealing with reticent students in a second language classroom is one the major issues a language teacher is faced with, and it becomes an exasperating experience when the students are from multicultural background who do not know how to respond to a teacher’s queries. Language teachers are confronted with the challenge of student-student and teacher-student interaction. In my paper I have explored the problem of active participation in an L2 classroom and sought to resolve how interaction takes place in formal instructional settings by incorporating the views of researchers and my own teaching experience.

    Participation by the NGOs in housing for the urban poor in Bangladesh

    Many non-government organisations (NGOs) are involved in various development programs in Bangladesh, targeting the urban poor, who also lack proper housing. Yet they have not been widely involved in urban housing. This paper is based on the author’s 1998 Robert McNamara Fellowship study titled 'Role of the NGOs in Urban Housing for the Poor in Bangladesh’ of the World Bank’s Economic Development Institute. It discusses the obstacles and limitations of involvement by the NGOs in housing for the urban poor in Bangladesh.

    Assesing needs and scopes of upgrading urban squatters in Bangladesh

    In almost all urban areas of developing countries squatter growth is a common phenomenon, characterized by filthy, dense, unhygienic and poorly-serviced human settlement, which can pose paramount threat to the discipline and health of city life. If proper measures are not taken the squatters dwellers might generate serious political agitation for improved housing. A number of upgrading projects so far have been taken for squatters to improve living standard and secure tenure throughout the developing world. Lots of difficulties have been faced by both dwellers and project implementing authorities in this regard, specially in devising the optimum utilization of scares resources. Few experiments have been made following the UN-Habitat specifications in countries like Brazil, Sub-Saharan Africa and in other Least Developed Countries (LDC). Along with all technical factors that can be measured in quantitative form social and motivational factors are getting priority day by day. Participatory approach is now considered more beneficial compared to authoritative decisions in upgrading schemes. In this context information on dwellers’ root of origin, their traditional history, desires, views, ideas, choice of priority can unfold a new horizon of understanding. Upgrading process that is based on dwellers choices and participation will obviously work better as this will enhance their motivation. In this paper application of information on dwellers background history is suggested and pointed a different approach to upgrade squatters into sustainable settlements in urban context of Bangladesh.
