Item EFFECT OF SUBMERGENCE AT VEGETATIVE PHASE ON MORPHOLOGICAL ATTRIBUTES AND YIELD OF SOME RICE VARIETIES(Department of Agricultural Botany, Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka-1207, 2011-06) SULTANA, TANIAilie experiment was conducted during June to December, 2011 in T. Aman season to observe etièct of submergence at vegetative phase on the morphological attributes and yield of some rice varieties. Four submergence duration, viz., Control (no submergence), Six days submergence. Ten days submergence and Fourteen days submergence and six varieties, viz.. BRRI dhan5l. BRRI dhan46. BRRI dhan34. BRRI hybrid dhanl, BRRI hybrid dhan2. ACI tiybridl were used for this experiment. The experiment was laid out in Split Plot Design with three replications. All parameters were significantly affected by the submergence duration and variety. The tallest plant was recorded from fourteen days submergence treatment. The highest number of leaves, number of tillers hilr'. and number of grains panicle", weight of 1000 grains were recorded from no submergence. The highest grain yield was found from no submergence (control). The tallest plant was observed in BRRI hybrid dhan2. The highest number of leaves, number of tiller hill", number grains panicle" and 1000-grain weight were achieved in BRRI dhan5l. The BRRI hybrid dhanl produced the highest (7.83 t ha") grain yield. The highest (8.50 t ha") grain yield was found from BRRI hybrid dhanl with no submergence (control) and the lowest (1.20 t ha") from BRRI dhan34 with fourteen days submergence. The test genotypes showed wide variation in yield reduction at different submergence duration. BRRI dhan5 I followed by BRRI hybrid dhanl showed lower grain yield reduction % in submerged conditions compare to control by attaining good yield contributing characters and thus proved as tolerant varieties. On the other hand, BRRI dhan34 and AC1 hybridl were susceptible to submergence.Item MORPHOLOGY YIELD AND SEED QUALITY OF RAPESEED (Brassica campestris L.) AS INFLUENCED BY NITROGEN AND ZINC(Department of Agricultural Botany, Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka-1207, 2011-06) Rimi, Tahmina AkterThe experiment was undertaken during rahi season. November 2011 to February 2012 to examine the response of different levels of nitrogen and zinc application on morphology yield and seed quality of rapeseed (Brassica campesiris L.) variety BARI Sarisha 15. In this experiment, the treatment consisted of four different N levels viz. No = 0 kg N/ha, N1 = 60 kg N/ha, N2 = 120 kg N/ha and N3= ISO kg N/ha, and three different level of Zn viz. Zn0 = 0 kg/ha. Zn1= 1 kg Zn/ha. Zn, =2 kg Zn/ha. The experiment was laid out in two factors Randomized Complete Block l)esign (RCBD) with three replications. Results of the experiment showed a significant variation among the treatments in respect of the majority of the observed parameters. The 120 kg N/ha resulted the highest plant height, number of leaves per plant, number of branches per plant, length of inflorescence, number of siliquae per plant, seed weight of hundred siliquae, thousand seed weight. The maximum yield of seed per hectare (3.57 t) was obtained from 120 kg N/ha. The maximum number of siliquae per plant, seed weight of hundred siliquae. thousand seed weight, seed yield (3.31 tiha) was recorded with 2 kg Zn/ha. Separately, application of Zn did not show signiFicant difference on morphological parameters such as plant height, number of leaves per plant and length of inflorescence as N. In addition, oil content of rapeseed varied significantly with both N and Zn independently whereas germination percent had no effect with either N or Zn. These results indicated that N has role on both vegetative and reproductive phases but Zn only on reproductive phase. The interaction between different levels of N and Zn was significantly influenced on almost all morphological parameters and yield contributing characters, seed yield and oil content. The maximum value of morphological parameters, yield contributing characters, seed yield of rapeseed was observed with the combined dose of 120 kg N/ha along with 2 Kg Zn/ha whereas the lowest values were obtained from control. 0 kg N/ha and 0 kg Zn/ha treatment combination. The maximum yield of seed per hectare (4.22 tones) and the maximum oil content (43.29%) was obtained from 120 kg N/ha with 2 Kg Zn/ha treatment combination. Based on the present results, it can be suggested that the combined use of 120 kg N/ha with 2 kg Zn/ha increased plant morphological parameters, seed yield and oil content of rapeseed.Item ROLE OF GIBBERELLIC ACID AND BORON ON GROWTH AND YIELD OF TOMATO(Solanwn Iycoperskwn L.)(Department of Agricultural Botany, Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka-1207, 2011-06) LABONY, ISMAT ARAThe field experiment was conducted at the Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University Farm, Dhaka. Bangladesh from October 2011 to March, 2012 to evaluate the role of gibberellic acid and boron on growth and yield of tomato. Four dose of gibberilic acid, viz., No Gibberellie Acid (GA3). 10 ppm (GA3), 20 ppm (GA3) and 30 ppm (GA3) and three levels of boron. viz., no Boric Acid, 1.5625 Kg Boric Acid/ha and 3.125 Kg Boric Acid/ha were used to conduct this experiment. The experiment was laid out in Randomized complete Block Design (RCBD) having two factors and replicated three limes. The main effect of gibberilie acid indicated that, the plant height was influenced significantly by the gibberllic acid. The tallest plant, maximum number of leaves per plant, number of branches per plant, maximum number of flowers cluster per plant, number of flowers per cluster, number of flowers per plant were produced by 30 ppm gibberellic acid. The earliest of days of first flowering, earliest in 50% flowering, maximum number of fruits per cluster, number of fruit per plant, minimum percent of fruit dropping, earliest of days of first harvesting), the longest fruit length, largest fruit breath, largest individual fruit weight was observed in 20ppm gibberellic acid. The different gibberellic acid had significant effect on the yield of fruits per hectare. The maximum yield of fruits per hectare (68.00 tones) was obtained 20pprn gibberellic acid. The maximum growth and yield contributing character of tomato was observed in 3.125 Kg Boric Acid/ha. The highest yield of fruit (67.14 tlha) was obtained from 3.125 Kg Boric Acid/ha. The interaction between different gibberellic acid and boron was significantly influenced on the all growth and yield characters. The maximum growth and yield contributing character of tomato was observed in 20.00 ppm of gibberellic acid with 3.125 Kg boric acid per ha. The highest yield of fruits per hectare (78.56 tones) was obtained from 20 ppm GA3 with 3.125 Kg Boric Acid/ha.Item EFFECT OF DIFFERENT LEVELS OF NITROGEN AND BORON ON MORPHOLOGICAL CHARACTERS, YIELD AND SEED QUALITY OF RAPESEED (Brassica canipestris L.)(Department of Agricultural Botany, Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka-1207, 2011-06) ARA, JESMINThe experiment was conducted at the experimental Field of Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka during the rabi season from November 2011 to February 2012 to evaluate the effect of different levels of nitrogen (N) and boron (B) on morphological characters, yield, oil content and germination percent of rapeseed (Brassica campexiris L.). The experiment was factorial with two factors, factor A consisted of four different N levels viz. 0, 60, 120. 180 (kg/ha) and factor B consisted of three different levels of B(boron) viz. 0. I, 2 (kg/ha). The experiment was laid out in Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with three replications. The collected data were statistically analyzed for evaluation of the treatment effect. Results showed significant variation in almost every parameter. The plant height, leaves plan(', Primary and secondary branches plant-I, length of inhiorescence at different days after sowing increased significantly with increasing rate of N. interestingly, B did not show any significant variation on above parameters. As N, application of B significantly increased siliquae on main inilorescence, seed weight of 100 siliquae, seed weight plant-i, thousand seed weight, seed yield (t hi') and harvest index as dose dependent manner. In addition, oil content of rapeseed showed varied significantly with both N and B independently, whereas N and B had no significant effect on germination percent of seed. These results indicated that N exhibited significant influence on morphological characters, yield, oil content and germination percent of seed whereas B showed differences on these parameters other than morphological characters. The interaction between different levels of N and B significantly influenced almost all morphological and yield contributing characters, seed yield and oil content of seed. The maximum value of morphological characters. yield contributing characters, seed yield and oil content of rapeseed was observed with the combined dose of 120 kg N/ha and 2 Kg B/ha (N2132) whereas the lowest values were obtained from control i.e., N0B0 treatment combination. The maximum yield of seed per hectare (1.78 t) and the maximum oil content (42.96 %) was obtained from 120 kg N/ha with 2 Kg B/ha treatment combination. Separately, the combined use of N and B did not show any significant differences on germination percent of rapeseed. Based on the present results, it can be suggested that the combined doses of 120 kg N/ha with 2 kg B/ha (N2B2) is appropriate for higher yield and quality seed production of rapeseed cv. BAR!Sarisha 14.Item SHADiNG EFFECTS ON GROWTH, YIELD AND FRUIT QUALITY OF STRAWBERRY(Department of Agricultural Botany, Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka-1207, 2011-12) ASMA, OMMYThis pot experiment was conducted at Horticulture Research Farm. Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University. Dhaka. Bangladesh during the period from November 2010 to March 2011. The experiment was laid out in split plot design with fbur replications and each main plot had three subplot with three pot. Three genotypes of strawberry namely. RABI-3. Camarosa. Nohime were grown with three shade treatments namely. 100% sunlight. 20% shade. 35% shade. RAI3I-3 and Camarosa produced better yield and marketable quality. In case of Soluble Solid Content and ascorbic acid, Camarosa performed better under 20% shade. Result indicated that 100% sunlight is required for the best strawberry production but under 20% shade fruit quality was better. Under 35% shade all the genotypes had ill performance fbi all parameters studied. The genotype Nohime failed to show better performance in quality attributes. The highest yield was observed in Camarosa followed by RABI-3 and the lowest in Nohime. The highest yield and the best vegetative growth were obtained under full sunlight followed by 20% shade treatment. Results also revealed that 35% shade was unsuitable for strawberry cultivation.Item INFLUENCE OF PLANTING DATES ON THE MORPHOLOGiCAL AND YIELD ATTRIBUTES OF SOME HYBRID RICE (Oryza sativa L.) VARIETIES IN AUS SEASON(Dept. of Agricultural Botany ,Sber-e-Bangla Agricultural Universitv. [)haka., 2011-06) BILLAH, MD. BAKIAn experiment was conducted at the field of Agricultural Botany Department, Shcr-eBangla Agricultural University (SAU). Dhaka during Mis season from March to July 2010. with a view to study the influence of planting dates on the morphological and yield attributes of hybrid rice varieties. The experiment consisted of two levels of treatments viz. A: Three varieties where two of them were hybrids and one was inbred: BRRI Hybrid dhan2, Tia and BRRI dhan48 (Inbred). B: Four transplanting dates: 16th March, 3 1 " March, 15th April and 30th April. The experiment was laid out in factorial randomized complete block design with three replications. Experimental results indicated that transplanting dates and varieties individually had significant effect on the growth and yield parameters like plant height, number of total tiller hilt', leaf area hill", total dry weight (g hillj, light interception percent, chlorophyll content at flag leaf stage, number of effective tiller hilt', panicle length, number of filled spikelet panicle", number of unfilled spikelet panicle", number of total spikelet panicle1, spikelet filling percent. grain yield (t ha'1), straw yield (t ha"), biological yield (t hi') and harvest index (%). The results revealed that 16" March transplanting gave the highest grain yield. Chlorophyll content was higher in BRRI Hybrid dhan2 followed by Tia. In contrast chlorophyll content was lower in BRRI dhan48. Among the varieties BRRI dhan48 gave the highest grain yield but both the hybrid varieties BRRI Hybrid dhan2 and Tia gave lower grain yield due to higher spikelet sterility because of more sensitiveness of hybrid rice varieties to high temperature and low sunshine hour at grain filling stage. The combined effect of transplanting dates and variety had also significant effect on yield and yield contributing characters. BRRI dhan48 transplanting on 16th March showed highest grain yield attaining good yield contributing characters.Item INFLUENCE OF MULCH ON GROWTH, YIELD AND FRUIT QUALITY OF STRAWBERRY(Department of Agricultural Botany, Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka-1207, 2011-06) RAHMAN, MD. HASNATThe experiment was carried out at the horticulture farm of Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka, Bangladesh to study the influence of mulches on growth, yield and quality contributing characters of strawberry. Strawberry genotypes RAJ3I-3, Camarosa and Nohime were subjected with four mulching treatments, namely control (no mulch), straw mulch, styrofoam mulch and black polythene mulch. The two-factor experiment was conducted following RCBD with four replications. Results revealed that the best vegetative growth was found in Camarosa, which also required less duration for floral bud initiation, flowering, fruit setting and fruit ripening. Total fruit weight and average fruit weight were also the highest in Camarosa. Number of flower bud, flower, fruit and percentage of fruit set were found highest in RABI-3. Nohime had higher fruit pH which was significantly different from the others. The fruit soluble solid content (SSC) and ascorbic acid percentage were higher in Camarosa. All mulch treatments influenced plant growth, yield and fruit quality. Among them black polythene and straw mulch had no significant difference on vegetative growth. Percentage of fruit set and total fruit weight were the highest in Camarosa treated with black polythene. The value of pH was the maximum when Nohime treated with no mulch. SSC was higher in Camarosa treated with styrofoam and no mulch. Ascorbic acid percentage was the greatest in Camarosa treated with black polythene mulch. In almost all the parameter tested, Camarosa performed better among the three genotypes. Among the mulching application, black polythene mulch gave the best performance for growth, yield and quality attributes.Item INFLUENCE OF NITROGEN AND MULCHING ON THE GROWTH AND YIELD OF ONION(Dept. of Agricultural Botany, Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural Universitv. [)haka., 2011-06) RAHMAN, MD. ANIS-URA field experiment was conducted at the Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University Farm. Dhaka, Bangladesh during the rabi season from October 2010 to April 2011 to evaluate the influence of nitrogen (N) and mulching (M) on the growth and yield of onion Allium cepa) cv. Taherpuri. The experiment was carried out with the application of four levels of nitrogen viz: 0 (N0) , 60 (N). 120 (N120) and 180 (N180) kg ha" and three types of mulching such as no mulch or control (M0), rice straw (M5) and water hyacinth (Mw) with the following 12 treatment combinations N0M0, N0M5, N0M, N50M0 N60M N120M0, N120M N120M N1,Mo Nj80MS. N180M. This was laid out in randomized complete block design (RCBD) and replicated thrice. The results indicated that growth parameters such as plant height and number of leaves at different days aller transplanting, dry weight of leaf; dry weight of pseudostem and dry weight of root were increased significantly with the application of both nitrogen (N) and mulching (M). As nitrogen, mulching of soil with straw (Ms) and water hyacinth (M) increased the length and diameter of bulb, fresh weight and dry weight of bulb and bulb yield. Interestingly, the bulb yield did not show differences between application of 120 kg N ha" (N 120) and application of ISO kg N ha" (N130) as well as M. and M. The maximum plant height and number of leaves per plant were found in N130M and N120M treatment combination whereas minimum plant height and number of leaves were showed at control. The yield components and yield such as maximum bulb diameter, individual bulb fresh weight and bulb yield were also significantly influenced with the combination of N and M. The results revealed that the highest bulb diameter and individual bulb fresh weight were obtained from N12oM treatment and minimum values were observed in N0N10, control condition. The treatment combination N120M was found to provide with the best bulb yield (12.20 t ha") whereas control, N0M0 showed the lowest yield (5.99 t ha 5. In this study. 103 % increased bulb yield of onion was obtained from the treatment N120M in comparison to N0M0 treatment combination. Based on the above results it can be concluded that the use of 120 kg N ha" along with water hyacinth mulch (N120M) increased onion bulb yield significantly under this locality.Item EFFECT OF POLLINATORS ON YIELD CHARACTERISTICS OF DiFFERENT VARIETIES OF OKRA(Department of Agricultural Botany, Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka-1207, 2011-06) HASNAT, MD. ABUA field experiment was conducted at the field of Sher-e-I3angla Agricultural University (SAU) during May to September, 2011 in kharif season with a view to find out the contribution of pollinators on yield contributing characteristics and yield of different varieties of okra. The experimental treatments included four okra varieties (V1: Metal; V2: BARI dherosh 2; V3: Munmun 45 and V4: Sarosh). Four different treatments were used to find out the effect of pollinators on okra yield [Ti: Flowers bagged with net with medium mesh; T2: Flowers bagged with net with very small mesh; T3: Flowers bagged with net and Vaseline rubbed at the bottom of peduncle and T4: Flower without net (contol)]. The experiment was laid out in randomized complete block design with three replications. The plant height, plant girth, branches per plant, leaf per plant, leaf length and leaf breadth was measured at 30. 45 and 60 DAS. Days to first flowering and days to edible maturity were recorded by calculating the number of days required from sowing to the flowering and edible stage of fruit. Pod length, pod diameter, pods per plant and pod yield was calculated after harvesting of fruit. Significant differences were observed for pods per plant and pod yield. The variety Munmun 45 produced highest pods per plant (41) and pod yield per hectare (11.23 t). Invertebrate pollinators were observed to find out the effective pollinations for okra. Insects of different order such as Lepidoptera, Coleoptera and Diptera were found during the flowering period. Insects of 1-lymenoptera order were the major pollinators, visiting okra flowers and peak of foraging activity was found during 9-1 I am which increased the highest number of fruit setting (26), number of seeds per plant (47) and germination percentage (92%) in Munmun 45 variety. These results suggest that growth and yield of okra are variable in different varieties and pollinator 1-lymenoptera increase the okra fruit yield under this climatic and edaphic condition of SAU.Item EFFECT OF POLLINATORS ON YIELD CHARACTERISTICS OF DIFFERENT VARIETIES OF SESAME(Department of Agricultural Botany, Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka-1207, 2011-06) MOHANTA, S. Dhaka, Bangladesh. during May 2011 to September2011 in kharif season with a view to find out the etThct of pollinators on yield contributing characteristics of different varieties of sesame. The experimental treatments included four sesame varieties viz. BAR!111-2 (V1). BAR!Til-3 (V2). BAR!Til-4 (V3) and Krisno (V4). The experiment was laid out in randomized complete block design with three replications. The variables measured at the 30. 45 and 60 DAS were plant height, plant girth, branches per plant, leaf per plant, leaf length, leaf breadth. days to first anthesis, days to edible maturity, pod length, pod diameter, pods per plant and pod yield. Significant differences were observed for pods per plant and pod yield due to the variety BAR!111-4 (V3) produced highest pods per plant (95.67) and yield per heetarc (1.65 t). Invertebrate pollinators were observed to find out the effective pollinations for sesame. Insects of different order such as. Lepidoptera, Colcoptera and Diptera were found during the flowering period. Insects of Hymenoptera order were the major pollinators, visiting sesame flowers and peak of foraging activity was found during 9-I1 am- Pollination increased the highest number of pod setting (86.67), number of seeds per pod (69) and germination percentage (80.93%) in BAR!111-4 (V3) was found in flowers without net ('!'4).
