    GROWTH AND YIELD OF CARROT AS INFLUENCED BY POTASSIUM AND PLANT PER HILL

    The experiment was carried out to study the effect of different levels of potassium and number of plant per hill on growth and yield of carrot at the Horticultural Farm, Shcr- e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka during the period of November 2006 to March 2007. The experiment consisted of two factors. Factor A- four levels of potassium viz. K () = Control, K| = 180 Kg, K 2 = 200 Kg, K^ = 220 Kg K 2 0/ha respectively. Factor B- Number of plant per hill viz P| = 1 plant per hill, P 2 = 2 plants per hill, = 3 plants per hill. The experiment was laid out with randomized complete block design (RCBD). Incasc of potassium highest yield (25.23 t/ha) was obtained from K and lowest (18.25 t/ha) from k 0 2 . Incase of number of plant per hill the highest yield (22.32 t/ha) was found from P* and lowest (19.27 t/ha) from P|. For combined effect of K 2 P? produced the highest (26.24 t/ha) yield and the lowest yield (13.81 t/ha) obtained from K 0 P| Considering the above findings, application of 200 kg k 2 0/ha with three plants per hill appeared to be suitable for cultivation of carrot.

    EFFECT OF PLANT SPACING AND POTASSIUM ON GROWTH AND YIELD OF CABBAGE

    The experiment was conducted in Horticulture Farm, Sher-e-I3angla .Agricultural University, Dhaka, during October 2007 to February 2008 to find out the effect of plant spacing and potassium on growth and yield of cabbage. The experiment consisted of Factor A: three plant spacing; S 1 : 60 cm x 30 cm, $2: 60 cm x 40 cm and S 3: 60 cm x 60 cm and Factor B: four levels of potassium fertilizer; !K: 0 kg; K;: 90 kg; K 2 : 120 kg and K3: 150 kg K20/ha respectively. The experiment was conducted in Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with three replication. Different treatments showed sigiificant variations on growth, yield components and yield of cabbage. Highest plant height at 60 DAT (37.70cm), maximum diameter of head (19.05 cm) and fresh weight of head (187kg) were found from and lowest was observed from Si. On the other hand, the tallest plant height at 60 DAT cm), maximum diameter of head (18.81 cm) and fresh weight of head (1.62 kg) were found from K3 and lowest was observed from K 0 treatment. For combined effect the highest plant height at 60 DAT (40.23 cm), maximum diameter of head (21.02 cm), highest fresh weight of head (2.21 kg) were found from S (39.51 and lowest was observed from SilCo treatment. The highest gross yield (81.89 t/ha), marketable yield (61.30 t/ha) and benefit cost 3K3 ratio (1.98) was noted from S 2K3 and lowest from S 1K0 . So, 60 cm x 40cm spacing with 150 kg K 2 0fha was best for growth and yield of cabbage.

    EFFECT OF FERTILIZERS AND RIPEN-iS ON THE FRUIT SET AND YIELD OF CUCUMBER (Cuewnis sativus L.)

    A field experiment was conducted at the Horticultural Research Farm of Shcr-e-L3angla Agricultural University. Dhaka, during April to July 2006 to study the effects of' fertilizers and Ripen-b on the fruit set and yield of cucumber. The experiment was laid out in a Randomized Complete Block Design (RCJ3D) with three replications. The experiment consisted two factors viz. i) Fertilizers (control. 30 ton cow dung. 15 ton poultry litter, ISO kg Urea, 125 kg TSP and 100 kg MP per hectare, respectively) ii) Ripen-iS (0, 150, 300 and 450 ppm, respectively). The individual and combined effects of fertilizers and growTh regulator (Ripen-15) on fruit set and yield of cucumber plants were studied. The individual and combined effects of fenilir (organic and inorganic) and growth regulator (Ripen-IS) on fruit set and yield of cucumber was found significant. Individually Inorganic fertilizer (Urea @ 150 kg/ha, TSP @ 125 kg/ha and MP @ 100 kg/ha) and 300 ppm "Ripen-I 5"gave the maximum nuniber(malc-59.47 and female- 17.65) of flowers, highest number of fruits (15.34), highest fruit length( 16.30cm). highest fruit diameter (5.69cm), highest fruit weight(412.90g), highest fruit weight per plant (4.78kg) and the highest yield (52.6411ha). In case of' plant growth regulators 300 ppm Ripen-1 5 the maximum number (maie-59.47 and female-17.65) of flowers, highest number of fruits (11.33), highest fruit length (15.33cm). highest fruit diameter (4.80cm). highest fruit weight (302.90g), highest fruit weight per plant (3.27kg) and the highest yield (35.15tJha) The treatment combination of inorganic fertilizer (Urea @ 150 kg/ha, TSP @ 125 kg/ha and MP @ 100 kg/ha) + 300 ppm "Ripen-IS" gave the maximum (male-63.33 and fernale-20.33) number of flowers per plant, highest number of fruits per plant (18.24), highest (17.27 cm) fruit length highest fruit diameter (6.1 em). highest fruit weight (433.3 g), highest fruit weight per plant (5.56 kg) and the highest yield (61.70 tIha).

    EFFECT OF GENEMAX ON GROWTH YIELD AND QUALITY ATTRIBUTES OF TOMATO(LycopsiCon esculentum Mill)

    INFLUENCE OF CORM SIZE AND PHOSPHORUS ON GROWTH FLOWERING AND YIELD OF GLADIOLUS

    The study was conducted at the Horticulture Farm of Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Sher-e-Bangla Nagar, Dhaka, Bangladesh during the period from November 2006 to June 2007. The experiment consisted with two factors. Factor A: Corm size (3 levels) such as: C 1 : Small size corm (10-20 g): C 2 : Medium size corm (21-30 g) and C 3 : Large size corm (3 1-40 g) and Factor B: Phosphorus (5 levels) as F 0 : 0 kg (Control); F,: 120 kg; P 2 : 130 kg; P 3 : 140 kg and P 4 : 150 kg 13 205 /ha, respectively. The experiment was laid out in Randomized Complete Block l)esign (RCBD) with three replications, in case of corm size, the highest yield of corni (14.27 i/ha) and cormel (II .30 tlha) was recorded from C 3 and the lowest yield of corm (12.13 i/ha) and cormel (9.79 tlha) was from C 1 . In case of phosphorus, the highest yield of corm (14.30 tlha) and cormel (11.62 i/ha) was obtained from P 3 and the lowest yield of corm (11.46 ttha) and For combind effect, the highest yield of corm (15.34 i/ha) and cormel (12.44 tiha) was observed from C cormel (9.24 i/ha) was from P 0 3?3 and the lowest yield of corm (11.00 i/ha) and cormel (8.88 i/ha) was from C3P0 , The highest benefit cost ratio (3.34) was attained from C 2 P3 and the . It may be concluded that large corm size with 140 kg P2051ha lowest (2.00) was recorded from C 3 P0 is best for growth, flowering and yield of gladiolus.

    EFFECT OF PLANT GROWTH REGULATORS ON GROWTH CURD YIELD AND SEED PRODUCTION OF CAULIFLOWER

    Two (icEd experiments were conducted at the farm of the Horticulture Research Center (}-IRC), Bangladesh Agricultural Research institute (BAR1). Joydebpur, Gazipur during the period from October 2004 to March 2005. The objectives of the research work were to study the curd yield and seed production of I3ARE Fulkapi-1 as influenced by different levels of Gibberellic acid (GA 3 ) and Ethrel. Both the experiments were laid out in a randomized complete block design (RCBD). The field experiment had three replications There were live concentrations olGA 3 (50, 75. 100. 125 and 150 ppm) in the first experiment and three concentration of both GA3 and Ethrel (300. 350. 400 and 50, 75, 100 ppm) in the second experiment. For curd initiation the maximum time (85.00 days) was required in plants treated with 150 ppm GA3 while the minimum time (80.00 days) was required with 50 ppm GA 3. The maximum number of leaves (26) were obtained in 125 ppm GA1 and the minimum (23) in 50 ppm GA3 and control treatment. The maximum curd weight with Leaves 2.20 kg), markeiablc curd weight (1.50 kg), curd length (27 cm), curd breadth (240cm), yield per plot (20.20 kg) and yield per hectare (57.71 tons) were recorded by ISO ppm GA3 and control treatment showed the lowest performance. For curd production, the highest BCR value of 2.90 was observed in 150 ppm GA 7. The highest plant height (115 cm) was recorded in 350 ppm GA3 while lowest was (84.00 cm) recorded in 100 ppm Ethrel. The maximum number of pods per plant (2850), pod length (7.50 cm), seeds per pod (16,30). seed weight per plant (38.53 g), 1000 seed weight (4.97 g), seed yield (1.57 i/ha) and percentages of seed germination (97.50) were found in 350 ppm CiA3 . 350 ppm GA3 also had the highest 13CR value of 8.02 indicating the economic viability of using growTh regulator in seed production of cauliflower

    EFFECT OF BULB SIZE AND POTASSIUM ON THE GROWTH FLOWER AND BULB PRODUCTION OF TUBEROSE

    An experiment was conducted at the Horticulture Farm of Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka during the period from May 2007 to April 2008, to study the effect of different sizes of bulb and potassium on the growth flower and bulb yield of tuberose. The experiment consisted with two factors, Factor A: three sizes of bulb viz, B1 : Small bulb (1.0 - 1.5 cm); B2: Medium bulb (1.6-2.0 cm) and B3 : Large bulb (2.1 -2.6 cm) in diameter respectively and Factor B: four levels of potassium viz., KO: 0 kg (control); K1 : 120 kg; K2: 140 kg and K3: 160 kgK2O/harespectively. The experiment was conducted in a Randomized Complcte Block Design with three replications. Bulb size and potassium fertilizer significantly influenced the growth and yield of tuberose. In case of bulb size, 13 3 gave the highest (8.8 tlha) yield and B1 gave the lowest (7.04 tlha). In case of potassium, K2 gave the highest yield (8.63 i/ha) and K 0 gave the lowest (7.30 t/ha). For combined effect 33K3 gave the highest (8.7101a) yield and B1 K0 gave the lowest (7.17 i/ha). So, large bulb size with 160 kg K20/11a was best for growth, tlower and bulb yield of tuberose.

    PERFORMANCE OF FiVE TOMATO VARIETIES AT DIFFERENT PLANTING DATES

    The experiment was conducted at the Hurt icull nrc Research Center Ilirm in Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute, Joydehpur. Ciazipur during October 2007 to March 2008. There were live tomato varieties, viz.. BARI Tomato-2. BARI Tomato-3. BARI Tomato-4, BARI Tomato-9 and BARI hybrid Tomato-4 and two planting dates viz.. November 01, November 15. The experiment was laid out in Randomized Complete Block Design (RUB!)) with three replications. Varieties had significant influence on growth and yield of tomato. 11w variety BARI hybrid Tomato-4 produced the highest yiôId (3.42 tiha) and BAR] Tomato-9 produced the lowest yield (40.42 L/ha).Thc highest percent of fruit set (63.47) was found in BARI l'ornato-4 and lowest (47.91) in BARI Tomato- 9:I'he variety BARI Tomato-3 produced largest fruit (121.3 gm) compared to oilier four varieties. Planting dates had no significant influence on growth and yield of tomato. However, growth and yield were best in November IS planting. The highest yield of tomato ($7.42 t/ha) was obtained from November 15 planting and lowest yield (59.20 1/ha) from November01 planting. Combined effect of varieties and planting dates had significant influence on growth and yield of tomato. BARI hybrid Tomato-4 gave the highest yield (91.15 tIha) on November 15 planting and BARI Tomato-9 gave the lowest yield (41.47 i/ha) on November 15 planting. It may be conclttdcd that. BARI hybrid Toinato-4 planted on November 15 would be beneficial ibr the farmer due to its higher y ield (91.15 C/ha).

    EFFECT OF SPACING AND POTASSIUM ON THE GROWTH AND YIELD OF SUMMER ONION

    The experiment was conducted at the central Farm of Sher-e-Bangla Agriculutral University, Dhaka during the period from February to July 2007 to find out the effect of spacing and potassium on the growth and yield of summer onion. The experiment consisted with two factors. Factor A: Three types of plant spacing; S:15cm 15cm; Factor B: Four levels of potassium; }Cg:Okg IC x 5cm, S2:15cm x 10cm, S3:I5cm 2 0Iha, K,:40kg K 20/ha, 1C2:80kg K 20/ha, K 3:120kg K 2 0fha. The experiment was laied out in Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD). In case of spacing highest plant height (30.13cm), fresh weight of bulb (35.75gm), yield (11.64 tfha) was obtained from S 2 . In case of potassium highest plant height (32.31cm), fresh weight of bulb (39.48gm),yield (11.78 t/ha) was obtained from K 3 . In case of combined effect highest yield (13.13 tlha) was obtained from the treatment combination of S 2K3 . The highest net return (Tk 149,296) was recorded from treatment combhiatio:i of S x 2K3 and the highest benefit cost 10cm spacing with application of 120kg K ratio (2.33) was recorded in S 2 K;!.     EFFECT OF SOWING TIME AND FERTILIZER MANAGEMENT ON GROWTH AND YIELD OF GIMAKALMI F (Ipomoea aquatica Forsk)

    The study was conducted in the horticulture Ilirni of Sher-e-I3angla Agricultural University. Dhaka. Bangladesh during the period from March to June 2007 to find out the eflèet of sowing time and fertilizer management on the growth and yield of Giniakalmi. The experiment consist of two flictors. Factor A: sowing time, such as 5,: 16 March. S2 : 31 March and S;: 15 April; Factor R: Four levels of fertilizer. such as F0: No fertilizer. F 1 : Cowdung: 15 iJha. (: 2 : Poultry litter: 7 t/ha and F 1: Inorganic fertilizer (urea: 200 kg/ha + TSP: 100 kg/ha+ MP: 100 kg/ha). There were 12(3 < 4) treatment combinations. In case of sowing time the highest yield was obtained from 52. In case of krtilizcr management the highest yield was recorded from (F 3 ). In case of combined effect of various level of sowing time and fertilizer management were also found significant. The highest yield was obtained from the treatment combination of3l march sowing time with inorganic iërtilizer.
