    GROWTH AND YIELD OF BLACKGRAM AS AFFECTED BY MANAGEMENT PACKAGES

    A field experiment was carried out at the research field of Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka during the period of March to June 2017 to study the effect of variety and management packages on growth and yield of blackgram. The experiment comprised of two factors; Factor A: Variety (3) viz. BARI mash-3 (V 1 ), BARI mash-2 (V ) and BINA mash-1(V ) and Factor B: management packages (3) viz. Low management: Fertilizer 0-0-0 NPK + 40 kg seed/ha in broadcasting + no pesticide application + no weeding (M 1 3 ), medium management: Fertilizer 20-10-20 NPK kg/ha + 24 kg seeds/ha in line sowing (30cm×continuous) + pesticide application + one hand weeding after 15 DAS (M ), high management: Fertilizer 40-20-40 NPK kg/ha + 24 kg seed/ha in line sowing + pesticide application (ripcord) + two hand weedings at 15 and 25 DAS (M 2 ). The experiment was laid out in split-plot design with three replications. Data on different growth parameters, yield attributes and yield of blackgram were significantly varied for different parameters. The highest emergence percentage (33.44%), plant height (53.54 cm), number of leaflet plant -1 ( 19.89), dry weight (8.95 g plant -1 ), branches plant (2.22), 1000-seed weight (33.74g) and seed weight (0.58 t ha -1 ) was found from BARI mash-2. The management packages resulted highest emergence percentage (41.11%), plant height (79.39 cm), leaflet plant -1 (52.13), dry weight plant -1 (8.95g), branches plant (3.00) and seed yield (0.63 t ha -1 ) from high management (M 3 ). The highest leaflet plant (56.8 cm) was revealed in V 2 M 3 , and the highest seed yield (1.06 t ha -1 ) and higher harvest index (49.75) was obtained from V 2 M . From the above results it was appeared that BARI mash2 with high management provided the best yield attributes and yield of blackgram.

    GROWTH AND YIELD OF AUS RICE AS AFFECTED BY AGRONOMIC MANAGEMENTS

    The experiment was conducted at the experimental field of Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka during the period from March to June, 2018 to study the effects of agronomic managements on growth and yield of Aus rice. The experiment comprised as two factors having two varieties in the main plots and five agronomic managements in the sub-plots under split-plot design with three replications. Significant variation was recorded for weed severity, different yield contributing characters and yield of Aus rice. The lowest weed population (26.67 m -2 ) and weed dry weight (1.96 g m -2 ) was recorded in M (recommended management) and M 2 (no fertilizer application), respectively, whereas the highest weed population (520.70 m -2 ) was found in the M (no management) but the highest dry weight (329.90 g m -2 ) in M (no weeding) treatment. At 30, 50, 70 DAS and harvest the taller plant (24.61 cm, 41.27 cm, 60.23 cm and 80.28 cm, respectively), grain yield (0.96 t ha -1 1 ) and straw yield (2.75 t ha -1 ) were recorded from V 2 compared to that of V . Similarly the tallest plant (27.11 cm, 49.66 cm, 71.49 cm and 91.07 cm at 30, 50, 70 DAS and harvest, respectively), grain yield (2.34 t ha -1 1 ) and straw yield (5.30 t ha ) were observed from M 4 . In respect of interaction, the highest grain yield (2.43 t ha ) and straw yield (5.31 t ha -1 ) were observed from V 1 M (BRRI dhan65 with recommended management), while the lowest grain yield (0.12 t ha 4 ) from V 1 M 0 (BRRI dhan65 with no management) and straw yield (0.85 t ha ) from V 2 M (Nerica with no management). Irrespective of variety, no management reduced 94-95% grain yield of Aus rice that was 84-89% for no weeding and no fertilizer application.

    EFFECT OF GROWTH REGULATORS ON GROWTH AND YIELD OF MUNGBEAN UNDER DIFFERENT LATE SOWING CONDITIONS IN KHARIF-II SEASON

    A field experiment was conducted at the research field of Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka during the period from October 2017 to January 2018 to study the effect of growth regulators on growth and yield of mungbean under different late sowing conditions in kharif-II season. The experiment was comprised of two factors; factor A: growth regulators (6) viz. G 0 ii = distilled water, G = 20 ppm BAP (Benzylaminopurine), G 2 = 40 ppm BAP, G 3 = 20 ppm GA 3 1 (Gibberellic acid), G = 40 ppm GA 3 , G 5 = 60 ppm GA 3 and factor B: sowing date (2) viz. S 1 = sowing on 31 October, 2017, S 2 = sowing on 14 th November, 2017. The experiment was laid out in randomized complete block design (RCBD) in factorial arrangements with three replications. Results revealed that in case of growth, plant height (38.35 cm), and dry weight (9.57g) plant -1 were significantly higher in G 5 (60 ppm GA ) treatment. In terms of yield and yield attributes, number of pods plant -1 (6.56), number of seeds pod -1 (5.52), weight of 1000- seeds (35.07 g), seed yield (0.26 t ha ), and harvest index (37.75 %) were higher in G 5 (60 ppm GA 3 3 -1 ) treatment). Sowing at 31 October showed better results in case of all growth and yield parameters than sowing at 14 November. Results from Interaction effect between different levels of growth regulators and different sowing conditions revealed that the highest plant height (39.43 cm), number of pods plant -1 (8.80), number of seeds pod -1 (7.22), weight of 1000-seeds (38.74 g), seed yield (0.45 t ha -1) were observed in S 1 G October with 60 ppm Gibberellic acid) interaction. The results in this study indicated that the plants performed better in respect of growth, yield and others yield contributing characters in S 1 G 5 (Sowing on 31 th 5 October with 60 ppm Gibberellic acid) treatment.

    EFFECT OF TRANSPLANTING DATE ON THE GROWTH AND YIELD OF AMAN RICE IN POLDER ECOSYSTEM OF THE SOUTH-WESTERN COASTAL ZONE OF BANGLADESH

    A field experiment was conducted on the farmers’ fields in polder 30, Batiaghata, Khulna during July 2017 to January 2018 in order to study the influence of different transplanting dates on the performances of aman rice under tidal ecosystem prevailing in the polders of the south-western coastal zone of Bangladesh. The experiment consisted of two level of treatments viz. variety and transplanting dates. The experiment was comprised with two rice varieties viz. BRRI dhan52 and Kumragor (local T. aman rice) and seven transplanting dates viz. 1 July, 10 July, 20 July, 30 July, 10 August, 20 August, 30 August. The experiment was laid out in Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with five dispersed replications. Results indicate that variety and date of transplanting exerted significant influence on the crop characters of aman rice. BRRI dhan52 produced the highest grain yield (3.51 t ha ), straw yield (3.72 t ha -1 ), biological yield (7.24 t ha ii -1 ), and harvest index (48.30%). The lowest grain yield (2.71 t ha -1 ), straw yield (4.40 t ha -1 ) and biological yield (6.57 t ha -1 ) and harvest index (32.88%) were obtained from Kumragor. Kumragor took longest duration 152 days to mature while BRRI dhan52 took 133 days to mature. Plant height (140.12 cm), number of total tillers m- 2 (240), number of grains panicle -1 (132.19), grain yield (3.63 t ha -1 ), straw yield (4.60 t ha -1 ), biological yield (8.27 t ha -1 ) and harvest index (44.01%) were highest with 10 August transplanting and decreased gradually after mid-August transplanting but drastically declined with 30 August transplanting. Drastic decrease of yield was showed on both of the transplanting date 1 July and 30 August. The present study indicates early August to be the most suitable transplanting date for aman rice in polder ecosystem of coastal zone.

    PERFORMANCE OF MUNGBEAN VARIETIES UNDER ORGANIC AND INORGANIC FERTILIZER MANAGEMENTS

    An experiment was carried out at Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University farm, Dhaka to investigate the performance of mungbean varieties under organic or inorganic fertilizer managements during the period from April to June, 2017. The field experiment consisted of two factors, factor A: Variety (2); V 1 = BARI mung 6, V = Binamoog 8. factor B : Fertilizer management (5); F 1 = NPKBS (RDF), F ii 2 2 = Cowdung (10 t/ ha), F = Vermicompost (7 t/ ha), F 4 = Poultry manure (5 t/ha) and F 5 3 = Rhizobium sp (80 g/ Kg seed). The experiment was arranged in RCBD (Factorial) with three replications. Results revealed that, BARI mung 6 gave the highest seed yield (0.93 t/ha) which may be attributed to higher number of pods plant -1 (12.17), seeds pod -1 (11.8) and 1000 seed weight (42.36 g). Among different organic and inorganic fertilizer managements F (NPKSB) treatment affected the growth and yield attributes giving the highest seed yield (1.02 t/ha), pods plant 1 -1 (13.60), seeds pod (13.06), pod length (9.51 cm) which was similar with F (Poultry manure) treatment. Combined treatment of BARI mung 6 and fertilizer, V 1 F 1 4 gave the highest seed yield (1.09 t/ha), pods plant -1 (14.03) and seeds pod -1 (14.49). Combination of Binamoog 8 and poultry manure treatment (V 2 F 4 ) had greater seed yield (1.01 t/ha), pods plant -1 (13.5) and seeds pod (14.27), which was statistically similar with BARI mung 6 along with recommended fertilizers. So application of chemical fertilizer can be reduced by the application of organic fertilizer (poultry manure) without sacrificing yield.

    INFLUENCE OF FERTILIZER AND SPACING ON THE YIELD PERFORMANCE OF BABY CORN

    An experiment was conducted at the Agronomy field of Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka during March to June 2017 to study the influence of fertilizer and spacing on the yield performance of baby corn. Four levels of fertilizer doses viz. F 1 = Recommended doses of fertilizer (RDF), F = 20% less than RDF, F 3 = 40% less than RDF and F = 20% higher than RDF and three levels of plant spacing viz. S 1 4 = 60 cm × 25 cm, S = 50 cm × 25 cm and S 3 2 = 40 cm × 25 cm were the treatments for the experiment. The experiment was laid out in a split-plot design with three replications having fertilizer doses in the main plot and plant spacing in the sub-plot. The nutrients; N, P, K, S and Zn were applied from the sources of urea, TSP, MoP, gypsum and ZnSO 4 respectively at the rate of 300, 150, 100, 150 and 10 kg ha , respectively which was considered as recommended doses of fertilizer (RDF). Hybrid baby corn was used as a test crop for the study. Results revealed that fertilizer treatment F (20% higher than RDF) showed the highest fresh cob yield ha -1 4 (9.26 t) whereas, the lowest (6.52 tha -1 ) was from F (40% less than RDF). Again, plant spacing with S 3 3 (40 cm × 25 cm) produce the highest fresh cob yield ha -1 (9.01 t) while the S (60 cm × 25 cm) produce the lowest (7.14 t). The interaction, F 4 S 3 1 showed significantly the highest fresh cob yield (10.10 t ha -1 ) which was attributed to the maximum number of cobs ha (270.00 thousand) and it also produced the maximum stover yield ha (11.12 t), biological yield ha -1 (21.22 t) and harvest index (47.60%). On the contrary, the minimum fresh cob yield was produced by the interaction, F 3 S ). For more precise results such trials need to be made in other agro climatic regions of Bangladesh. The highest gross return (Tk. 303000), net return (Tk. 137759) and BCR (1.83) were also obtained from the treatment combination of F 4 S 3 . But the lowest were obtained from the treatment combination of F (40% less than RDF with 40 cm × 25 cm plant spacing).

    RESPONSE OF BORO RICE TO FOLIAR SPRAY OF ZINC AND BORON

    The field experiment was conducted at the Agronomy field of Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Sher-e-Bangla Nagar, Dhaka-1207 during the period from November 2016 to May, 2017 to find out the response of boro rice to foliar spray of zinc and boron. Treatment were T 1 = Recommended Fertilizer (RF), T 2 = RF+ Foliar spray (FS) with water at tiller initiation (TI), T 3 = RF + Foliar spray (FS) with water at flowering initiation (FI), T 4 = Zn (0.2%) FS at TI + RF, T 5 =Zn (0.5%) FS at TI + RF, T 6 =Zn (0.8%) FS at TI + RF, T 7 = Zn (0.2%) FS at FI + RF, T 8 =Zn (0.5%) FS at FI + RF, T 9 = Zn (0.8%) FS at FI + RF, T 10 = B (0.5%) FS at TI + RF, T 11 = B (1.5%) FS at TI + RF, T 12 = B (2.0%) FS at TI + RF, T 13 = B (0.5%) FS at FI + RF, T 14 = B (1.5%) FS at FI + RF, T 15 = B (2.0%) FS at FI + RF. The experiment was laid out in a Randomized complete Block Design (RCBD) with three replications. Data on different growth, yield and yield contributing parameters were recorded. The highest plant height (12.39, 31.12, 44.38, 59.47 and 103.34 cm at 15, 30, 45, 60 DAT and at harvest, respectively) was obtained from T 11 [B (1.5%) FS at TI + RF] where the lowest plant height (13.18, 24.40, 33.53, 44.94 and 78.59 cm at 15, 30, 45, 60 DAT and at harvest, respectively) was found from T 1 (Recommended Fertilizer (RF)). The highest LAI (0.78, 0.85, 0.1.32, 3.00, 3.49 cm 2 ) and at harvest, respectively) was obtained from the treatment T 11 [B (1.5%) FS at TI + RF] and the lowest was found in (0.74, 0.79, 1.10, 2.24, 2.58 cm 2 ) at 15, 30, 45, 60 DAT and at harvest, respectively) was found from T 1 (Recommended Fertilizer (RF)). The highest number of effective tillers hill -1 (15.13), panicle length (27.86 cm) and filled grains panicle -1 (155.52) was obtained from T 11 [B (1.5%) FS at TI + RF] whereas the lowest was found from T 1 (Recommended Fertilizer (RF)). The maximum days to panicle initiation, days to flowering and days to maturity (79.67, 117.67 and 152.67 days) was obtained from T 11 [B (1.5%) FS at TI + RF] the lowest was found from the treatment T 1 (Recommended Fertilizer (RF)). The highest grain yield, straw yield, biological yield and harvest Index (7.10 t ha -1 , 7.61 t ha -1 , 14.71 t ha -1 and 48.26) was obtained from the treatment T 11 [B (1.5%) FS at TI + RF] where the lowest was found from the treatment T 1 (Recommended Fertilizer (RF)). From the above findings, it may be concluded that among the treatment T 11 [B (1.5%) FS at TI + RF] performed the best results. So, the treatment T 11 [B (1.5%) FS at TI + RF] showed the superior combination compared to other treatment combinations for rice production.

    RESPONSE OF BIOCHAR ON SOIL PROPERTIES AND YIELD OF SESAME

    The experiment was conducted at the research plot of the Department of Agronomy, Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka during the period from March, 2017 to June, 2017 to study response of biochar on soil properties and on the growth and yield of sesame. In the experiment, the treatment consisted of three varieties, viz., V 1 = BARI Til2, V 2 = BARI Til-3, V 3 = BARI Til-4 and five levels of biochar viz., B 0 = control (no biochar application), B 1 = application of biochar 2 t ha -1 , B 1 = application of biochar 4 t ha -1 , B 1 = application of biochar 6 t ha -1 , B 1 = application of biochar 8 t ha . The experiment was laid out in a two factors randomized complete block design (RCBD) with three replications. Variety, application of different levels of biochar and their interaction showed statistically significant variation in plant height, number of leaves plant -1 at 55 days after sowing (DAS), 80 DAS and at harvest, capsules plant , seeds capsule -1 , 1000 seeds weight, grain yield, stover yield, biological yield and harvest index. Effect of variety on pH, organic carbon (OC%), N content in soil is insignificant. Effect of application of different levels of biochar on pH, (OC%), N, P and K content in soil are significant. Interaction effect of variety and biochar application on N, P and K content in soil are significant but soil pH and (OC%) are insignificant. The highest plant height (70.34, 110.95 and 109.84 cm), number of leaves plant -1 (80.47, 116.70 and 94.54) at 55, 80 DAS and at harvest was observed in the variety BARI Til-4 cultivated with application of biochar 6 t ha -1 (V 3 × B 3 ) and the lowest was observed in variety BARI Til-2 with no biochar application (V 1 × B 0 ). The highest number of capsules plant -1 , number of seeds capsule -1 and weight of 1000 seeds was observed in the variety BARI Til-4 cultivated with application of biochar 6 t ha -1 (V 3 × B 3 ) and the lowest was found variety BARI Til-2 with no biochar application (V 1 × B 0 ). Variety V 3 (BARI Til4) gave the highest yield (1.01 t ha -1 ) and harvest index(HI) (35.15 %), whereas, the lowest seed yield (0.88 t ha -1 ) and HI (27.66 %) was observed in variety V 1 (BARI Til2). The highest grain yield (1.03 t ha -1 ) and HI (33.40 %) was recorded in B 3 (biochar 6 t ha -1 ) the lowest grain yield (0.85 t ha -1 ) and HI (30.43%) was achieved by B 0 (no biochar application). The highest seed yield (1.07 t ha -1 ) and HI (36.46%) was observed in the variety BARI Til-4 cultivated with application of biochar 6 t ha -1 (V 3 × B 3 ). The lowest seed yield (0.75 t ha -1 ) and HI (25.78%) was observed variety BARI Til-2 with no biochar application (V 0 × B 0 ). The highest soil pH (6.09), organic carbon (0.70%), total nitrogen (0.073 %), available phosphorus (29.29 µg g -1 ) and exchangeable potassium (0.40 meq 100 g -1 ) was recorded in B 0 and the lowest soil pH (5.84), total nitrogen (0.039 %), available phosphorus (14.52 µg g -1 ) and exchangeable potassium (0.23 meq 100 g -1 ) was achieved in B 0 . The highest available phosphorus (30.35 µg g ) and exchangeable potassium (0.41 meq 100 g -1 ) was observed in BARI Til-2 cultivated with application of biochar 8 t ha -1 (V 1 × B 4 ). In respect of seed yield and soil properties BARI Til-4 cultivated with application of biochar 6 t ha -1 was suitable compared to other treatment combinations.

    GROWTH AND YIELD OF MUNGBEAN AS AFFECTED BY MANAGEMENT PACKAGES

    A field experiment was conducted to study the growth and yield of two mungbean varieties under different agronomic management packages at the central experimental farm, Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka-1207, Bangladesh during March to June, 2017. Treatments consisted of three varieties: V = BARI Mung-6, V 2 = BU mug 4, V 3 =Binamoog-8; and three levels of management i.e. M = Low management (Fertilizer 0-0-0 NPK kg ha ii -1 + 40 kg seeds ha -1 in broadcasting + no pesticide application + no weeding), M = Medium management (Fertilizer 20-1020 NPK kg ha -1 + 24 kg seeds ha -1 2 in line sowing (30 cm X Continuous) + pesticide application + one hand weeding), M = High management (Fertilizer 40-20-40 NPK kg ha -1 + 24 kg seeds ha -1 3 in line sowing + pesticide application + two hand weedings). Results revealed that vegetative growth and yield of mungbean was significantly influenced by different varieties and management practices where V and M gave the highest seed yield respectively. The highest seed yield 1190.10 kg ha -1 3 was obtained from the interaction treatment V 3 M due to the highest number of pods plant -1 , pod weight plant -1 3 , and 1000- seed weight. Medium fertilizer and one hand weeding of M reduced 28.87% yield whereas no fertilizer application, no pesticide, no weeding and broadcasting sowing of M 2 1 1 reduced 87.34% yield. Therefore, it can be concluded that the application of higher management practices (high management= Fertilizer 40-20-40 NPK kg ha -1 + 24 kg seeds ha in line sowing + pesticide application + two hand weedings) had a positive impact on different mungbean varieties.

    EVALUATION OF DIFFERENT WEED MANAGEMENT PRACTICES FOR MAXIMUM GROWTH AND YIELD OF WHEAT VARIETIES

    A field experiment was conducted in medium fertile soil at Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University (90º37´ E longitude and 23º77´ N latitude), Dhaka, Bangladesh during November 2017 to April 2018 in rabi season with a view to evaluate the performance of wheat varieties under different weed control methods. The experiment was carried out with three varieties i.e. BARI Gom-28, BARI Gom29 and BARI Gom-30 in the main plot and five weed management methods viz. control (no weeding), two hand weeding at 20 and 40 DAS, Panida 33EC (Pendimethalin) @ 2000 ml ha -1 at 5 DAS pre-emergence, Afinity 50.75WP (Isoproturon) 1500 g ha -1 at 25 DAS as post-emergence herbicide and Panida 33EC (Pendimethalin) @ 2000 ml ha -1 1 at 5 DAS + Afinity 50.75WP (Isoproturon)1500 g ha at 25 DAS in the sub plot in split plot design. Nine different major weed species were found in the field such as Cynodon dactylon, Cyperus rotundus, Echinochloa colonum, Eleusine indica, Chenopodium album, Alternanthera philoxeroides, Brassica kaber, Ieliotropium indicum, Vicia sativa. Results reveled that BARI Gom30 contributed the highest grain yield 3.01 t ha -1 . Pre-emergence application of Panida 33EC controlled weeds significantly which showed highest growth followed by yield achieved in wheat. BARI Gom-30 in combination with Panida 33EC produced the highest grain yield 3.52 t ha -1 while the lowest grain yield 2.09 t ha was obtained from BARI Gom-28 with no weeding treatment. Results reveled that Panida 33EC (pre-emergence) was found more effective to controlling weeds in wheat as the benefit cost ratio was 1.41. Results of the study finally reveled that Panida 33EC might be considered as a feasible option for combating weed and ensuring higher yield in wheat cultivation.
