    GROWTH, YIELD AND SEED VIABILITY OF FRENCH BEAN VARIETIES AS INFLUENCED BY VERMICOMPOST

    The experiment was conducted at the farm of Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka during the period from December 2017 to February 2018 to study the growth, yield and seed viability of french bean varieties as influenced by vermicompost. Two factors viz. three french bean varieties; V 1 (BARI jhar seem-1), V 2 (BARI jhar seem-2) and V 3 (BARI jhar seem-3) and four levels of vermicompost; Vc 0 (0 t ha -1 ), Vc 1 (6 t ha -1 ), Vc 2 (8 t ha -1 ) and Vc 3 ) were considered for the experiment. The experiment consisting of 12 treatment combinations laid out in Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with three replications. It was noted that the maximum plant height (47.92 cm) was found from the variety, V 3 (BARI jhar seem-3). But the the variety V 1 (BARI jhar seem-1) showed the highest flowers plant -1 (41.09), pods plant (32.09), fresh weight of pods plant -1 (267.19 g), dry weight of pods plant (45.91 g) and fresh pod yield ha -1 (7.13 t). The treatment Vc 3 (10 t ha -1 ) showed the highest plant height (43.31 cm), branches plant -1 -1 (15.20), flowers plant (50.92), number of pods plant -1 (40.82), pod length (11.11 cm), fresh weight of pods plant -1 (342.25 g), dry weight of pods plant (6.53) and fresh pod yield ha -1 -1 (10 t ha -1 -1 (57.56 g), number of seeds pod (9.13 t). Treatment combination of V 1 (BARI jhar seem -1with 10 t ha -1 ) gave the highest flowers plant -1 Vc 3 (52.62), pods plant (42.56), pod length (11.37), fresh weight of pods plant -1 (367.50g), dry weight of pods plant -1 (61.50 g) and fresh pod yield ha -1 (9.80 t) whereas V 2 (BARI jhar seem-2 with 0 t ha -1 ) had lowest value for all the parameters. Incase of seed viability test seed germination (96.67%), root length (20.02 cm), shoot length (24.08 cm), and seed vigor index (2348.00) were recorded as maximum with V 1 Vc 3 (BARI jhar seem-1 with 10 t ha -1 vermicompost) where the lowest was obtained from V 2 Vc 0 .     YIELD AND QUALITY OF ONION SEED AS INFLUENCED BY BORON AND CALCIUM

    A field experiment with BARI Piaz-1 was conducted in the research farm of Shere-Bangla Agricultural University, Sher-e-Bangla Nagar, Dhaka, during the winter season (October to February) to investigate the performance of boron and calcium. The experiment was carried out with four levels of boron viz. B (500ppm), B 2 (1000ppm) and B 3 0 (0ppm), B (2000ppm); and three level of calcium viz. C (0ppm), C 1 (2500ppm) and C (5000ppm). This experiment was laid out in RCBD (Randomized Complete Block Design) with three replications and 12 treatment combinations. The results showed that the treatments significantly influenced the plant height and number of leaves at all growth stages except harvesting time. At harvest boron and calcium significantly increased the umbel plot 1 , fruits umbel -1 2 , fruit set (%), yield plant -1 -1 , flowers umbel , yield per plot, 1000-seed weight, yield ha -1 , germination percentage and normal seedling percentage; and reduced the abnormal seedling percentage. Combined application of boron and calcium also significantly increased the all above parameters mentioned except abnormal seedling percentage of onion. The highest result of all parameters showed in above excluding abnormal seedling percentage from B 3 (2000ppm) and C (5000ppm) treatment. B 3 and C treatment reduced production of abnormal seedling. Among the combined treatment of boron and calcium B 2 (2000ppm boron and 5000ppm calcium) gave the highest plant height, leaf number and chlorophyll content. But after reviewing the combined effects of both treatments, application of 2000 ppm of boron together with 5000 ppm of calcium (B ) treatment gave the best performance showing the yield and quality of onion seed. 3 C 2 3 C 2 1 0 - 2

    INFLUENCE OF NITROGEN AND PHOSPHORUS LEVELS ON YIELD AND SEED QUALITY OF RICE

    The experiment was conducted at the research farm of Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Sher-e-Bangla Nagar, Dhaka, Bangladesh during Boro season from December 2016 to May 2017 to study the influence of nitrogen and phosphorus levels on yield and seed quality of rice. The experiment comprised as two factors, i.e. different fertilizer doses i.e. F 0 = No fertilizer, F 1 = 50% less than recommended dose of fertilizer, F 2 = 25% less than recommended dose of fertilizer, F 3 = Recommended dose of fertilizer, F 4 =25% more than recommended dose of fertilizer, F 5 = 50% more than recommended dose of fertilizer, F 6 = 75% higher than recommended dose of chemical fertilizer; and two varieties i.e. V 1 = BRRI dhan28, V 2 = BRRI dhan74. The experiment was conducted following split plot design with three replications. The result revealed that fertilizer dose F 4 (25% higher than recommended dose) gave highest plant height (91.24 cm), effective tillers hill -1 (11.96), panicle length (19.70 cm), 1000 grains weight (29.42 g) and grain yield (6.91 t ha ). On the other hand, V 1 (BRRI dhan28) was superior by producing tallest plant (90.58 cm) which may be attribute the highest grain yield (5.96 t ha ). Interaction of F 4 V 1 was also superior in producing the highest yield (7.53 t ha1). In case of seeds quality aspect, F 4 (25% higher than recommended dose) fertilizer dose gave the highest germination percentage (92.66%), shoot length (17.55 cm), root length (8.80 cm), shoot dry weight (20.86 mg) and root dry weight (14.60 mg). The variety V 2 gave highest germination percentage (87.42%), shoot length (16.58 cm), root length (8.75 cm), shoot dry weight (18.95 mg) and root dry weight (16.56 mg). From the result, it can be concluded that F 4 (25% higher than recommended dose) and V 2 (BRRI dhan28) most suitable for yield and seed quality. -1 -1

    GROWTH AND YIELD OF QUINOA (Chenopodium quinoa) AS AFFECTED BY SOWING DATE

    A field experiment was carried out at the research field of Sher-e-BanglaAgricultural University, Dhaka during the period of November to May, 20172018 to study the effect of variety and sowing date on growth and yield ofquinoa. The experiment comprised of two factors; Factor A: Variety (2) viz. Titicaca (V 1 ) and Vikinga (V 2 ) and Factor B: sowing date (5) viz. S 1 (Nov-10),S 2 (Dec-10), S 3 (Jan-10), S 4 (Feb-10) and S 5 (Mar-10). The experiment was laidout in split-plot design with three replications. Data on different growthparameters, yield attributes and yield were significantly varied for differentparameters. The highest plant height (63.75 cm), highest fresh straw weight ofplant -1 (23.47 g) and (372.54 kg ha -1 ) , dry straw weight of plant (2.65 g), and(31.91 kg ha -1 ), 1000-seed weight (2.04 g) seed weight plant -1 (3.16 g) and(52.22 kg ha -1 ) and husk weight (17.13 kg ha -1 ) was found from Titicaca variety.The sowing date resulted higher plant height (72.83 cm), highest fresh strawweight of plant -1 (36.67 g) and (614.31 kg ha -1 -1 ), dry straw weight of plant (4.13g) and (69.12 kg ha -1 ), 1000-seed weight (2.58 g), seed weight plant (7.47 g) and (180.01 kg ha -1 ) and husk weight (42.46 kg ha -1 -1 ) was obtain from V 1 . Highest branch No. (25.88) provide by V 1 S 3, Higher inflorescence No. (31.46)and inflorescence diameter (14.41 cm) in V 2 S 2. From the above results it was appeared that Titicaca with sowing date November provided the best yieldattributes and yield of quinoa. -1 S 1

    EFFECT OF SPACING AND FERTILIZER AMENDMENT ON GROWTH AND SEED YIELD OF ONION

    A field experiment was conducted in the field of Sher-e - Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka, Bangladesh during the period from October 2017 to April 2018 . The experiment consisted of four levels of spacing (viz. S 1 = 20cm×15cm, S 2 = 25cm×15cm, S 3 =20cm×20cm, S = 25cm×20cm) and four levels of fertilizer (viz. T 0 = No application (control), T 4 1 = N kg/ha, T 2 = N 80 P 50 K 100 S 30 kg/ha, and T 3 = N 100 P 70 K 120 S kg/ha). The twofactor experiment was carried out in Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with three replications. There were 16 treatment combinations in this study. A unit plot was 1.0 m×1.2 m and the treatments were distributed randomly in each block. Data on growth and yield parameters were recorded and analyzed statistically. The differences were evaluated by Duncans Multiple Range Test (DMRT). Growth and yield of onion were influenced by the different spacing and fertilizer amendment. The 25cm×20cm spacing resulted in the highest 40 number of leaves, diameter of bulb, length of bulb, weight of blub per plant and thousand seed weight. The maximum seed yield per hectare (394.9) was observed in 20cm×15cm spacing. NPKS had also significant influence on yield of onion. The highest plant height, number of leaves, diameter of bulb, length of bulb, weight of blub per plant, yield per plot and yield per hectare (1.99 kg/plot and 16.57 t/ha, respectively), number of flowers per umbel, weight of seeds per plant, thousand seed weight were applied N 80 P 50 K 100 S kg/ha. The maximum seed yield per hectare (374.30 kg) was obtained from N 30 80 P 50 K 100 S kg/ha. In respect of combined effect, application of N 80 P 50 K 100 S 30 30 kg/ha with 20cm×15cm produced the highest seed yield per hectare (404.20). Considering above findings, the application of N 80 P 50 K 100 S kg/ha and 20cm×15cm spacing may be used for onion cultivation. 30 60 P 30 K 80 S 20

    EFFECT OF SPLIT APPLICATION OF N, K AND FYM LEVELS ON THE PRODUCTIVITY OF SEED POTATO DERIVED FROM TRUE POTATO SEED

    ABSTRACT A field experiment was carried out during the period from November, 2016 to April, 2017 at the farm of Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka, to investigate the effect of split application of N, K and FYM levels on the productivity of seed potato derived from true potato seed (TPS). Three Nitrogen (N) levels viz., N 1 = 60 kg N ha -1 at planting + 60 kg N ha at first earthing up, N 2 = 60 kg N ha -1 at planting + 30 kg N ha -1 at first earthing up + 30 kg N ha -1 at second earthing up and N 3 = 60 kg N ha -1 at planting + 20 kg N ha -1 at first earthing up + 20 kg N ha -1 at second earthing up + 20 kg N ha at 60 DAP, two Potassium (K) levels viz., K 1 = 60 kg K ha -1 -1 at planting and K = 30 kg K ha -1 at planting + 30 K ha -1 at first earthing up and two Farm Yard Manure (FYM) levels viz., F 1 1 = 6 t FYM ha -1 at planting and F 2 -1 = 10 t FYM ha at planting were considered for the experiment. The experiment was laid out in a split split plot design with three replications. The collected data on different growth and yield parameters were analyzed statistically. Results revealed that all the treatment combinations showed promising effect on yield and yield attributes of potato. It was observed that the highest weight of tuber hill -1 (0.284 kg), tuber yield (37.87 t ha -1 ) and „A‟ graded seed potato yield (10.60 t ha -1 ) was found from N 1 K 2 F but the highest non-seed potato yield (22.47 t ha -1 ) was found from N 3 K 1 F 1 2 . But the highest percent of seed potato yield by weight (70.66%), „B‟ graded seed potato yield (8.98 t ha ) and percent of non-seed potato yield by weight (65.00%) were found from N where the lowest number of stem hill -1 (2.00), weight of tuber hill -1 (0.173 kg), tuber yield (23.00 t ha -1 ), seed potato yield (9.93 t ha -1 ), „A‟ graded seed potato yield (5.78 t ha -1 ) and „B‟ graded seed potato yield (4.15 t ha -1 ) were also achieved from N 3 K 2 F 2 . -1 2 K 1 F 1 2 -

    YIELD AND SEED QUALITY AS INFLUENCED BY PRUNINGAND PLANT SPACING OF FRENCH BEAN

    The experiment was conducted at the research farm of Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Sher-e-Bangla Nagar, Dhaka, Bangladesh during the rabi season from November 2016 to March 2017 to study the quality seed production of french bean as influenced by spacing and pruning. The experiment comprised of two of which factors, factor A. Pruning (P 0 = no pruning, P 1 = one time stem pruning, P 2 = two times stem pruning) and factor B. Spacing (S 1 = 30×10 cm spacing, S 2 =30×15 cm spacing and S 3 = 30×20 cm spacing). The experiment was conducted following the randomized complete block design (RCBD) with three replications. Result revealed that the number of pods plant 1 -1 (27.27), pod weight plant -1 (135.68 g) and pod yield (13.86 t ha ) showed the highest value resulting best seed yield (11.27 t ha ) due to pruning P 1 . Similarly, the number of pods plant -1 -1 (26.98), pod weight plant (133.06 g) and pod yield (12.27 t ha 1 ) the wider spacing S 2 -1 ) attained the highest seed yield (9.97 t ha . Result also demonstrated that, seed quality (i.e. germination (%), shoot length and root length) was higher for the treatment P 1 and S 2 . Thus, the findings indicated that the one time pruning with wider spacing (30×15 cm) could be used for yield maximization of French bean in Bangladesh. - -1 -

    GROWTH, SEED YIELD AND QUALITY OF BUSH BEAN (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) AS INFLUENCED BY VARIETY AND PHOSPHOROUS

    The experiment was carried out at Horticultural Farm, Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, during the period from November 2016 to April 2017 to study the application of Phosphorus fertilizer interaction with Variety for higher growth, seed yield and seed quality of bush bean. The experiment consists of two factors. Factor A:Three BARI Bush Bean variety, BARI Bush Bean-1, BARI Bush Bean-2 and BARI Bush Bean-3. Factor B: four levels of phosphorus, P 0 : 0 kg P 2 O 5 /ha, P 1 : 80 kg P 2 O 5 /ha, P 2 : 100 kg P 2 O 5 :120 kg P 2 O 5 /ha were used for the present study. The experiment was laid out in RCBD with three replications. Results showed that highest seed yield of bush bean (3.46 t) was found from BARI Bush Bean-2 variety and lowest seed yield (2.12 t) was found from BARI Bush Bean-3 variety. For different levels of Phosphorus, highest seed yield of bush bean (3.44 t) was found from P 2 (100 kg P/ha) treatment and lowest seed yield (2.22 t) was found from P 0 (control) treatment. In case of combined effect, the highest seed yield of bush bean (3.99 t) was produced from V 2 P 2 (BARI Bush Bean-2 and 100 kg P/ha) treatment combination and lowest seed yield (1.50 t) was found from V 3 (control) treatment combination. The treatment combination of BARI Bush Bean-2 with 100 kg P 2 O 5 /ha appeared to be the best for cultivation of bush bean under Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University Farm condition. /ha and P 3 P 0

    SCREENING OF MUNGBEAN GENOTYPES UNDER PEG INDUCED DROUGHT STRESS CONDITION

    Ensuring food security for over growing population is a major challenge to the agriculturist. More over phenomena like abiotic stresses (especially drought) exert more challenges to fulfill the task. So, screening of drought tolerant crop could be a feasible means to fight the battle. Mungbean is a popular pulse crop in Bangladesh. Screening of drought tolerant mungbean genotypes is time demanding issues as the drought prone areas are increasing exponentially with times. To screen drought tolerance mungbean genotypes, germination, seedling growth, root shoot ratio, coefficient of germination, vigor index and water relation behavior were used as screening criteria. Sixteen mungbean genotypes viz. V 1 = BARI Mung 3, V 2 = BARI Mung 4, V 3 = BARI Mung 5, V 4 = BARI Mung 6, V 5 = BARI Mung 7, V 6 = BARI Mung 8, V 7 = BINA Mung 5, V 8 = BINA Mung 6, V 9 = BINA Mung 8, V 10 =BMXK 1 -09015-6, V 11 =BMX-08011-2, V 12 = BMX-08011-8, V 13 =BMXK 1 -090152, V 14 =BMXK 1 -09012-1, V 15 =PM-5 and V 16 =IPM-02-03 were tested under 5 different PEG concentrations (0%, 5%, 10%, 15% and 20%) at central laboratory, Sher-e-bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka-1207, during February to March, 2018. The experiment was conducted with a complete randomize design (CRD) with 5 replications. The results of the experiment revealed that, germination, seedling growth and water relation behavior of mungbean genotypes varied significantly under different PEG concentration (Drought inducer). A marked reduction of germination, seedling growth and water relation behavior was observed with the increasing of PEG concentration for most of the mungbean genotypes except BINA Mung-6, BARI Mung-4 and BINA Mung-5. The maximum germination percentage (98.12%), root shoot ratio (0.55), relative water content (94.78), water retention capacity (24.98), coefficient of germination (22.27) and vigor index (233.90) were recorded from BINA Mung 6 at 0% PEG concentration. The minimum germination percentage (28.22%), relative water content (25.55), water retention capacity (3.08), coefficient of germination (6.06) and vigor index (13.45) were recorded from IPM-02-03 advanced lines of mungbean at 20% PEG concentration. The minimum root shoot ratio (0.20) at 20% PEG concentration was recorded from BARI Mung 5. BINA Mung 6, BARI Mung 4 and BINA Mung 5 showed consistently better performance against drought stress and there were slow linear reduction were observed with the increasing of PEG concentration from 0% to 20%. So considering the above results, BINA Mung 6, BARI Mung 4 and BINA Mung 5 could be promising drought stress genotypes against moderate drought stress condition.

    EFFECT OF NUTRIENT MANAGEMENT AND FRUIT POSITION ON GROWTH AND SEED YIELD OF OKRA

    The experiment was conducted at the Farm of Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka during the period from April to September 2017 to study in effect of nutrient management and fruit position on growth and seed yield of okra. The experiment consisted of four different levels of NPKS as: F = N 60 P 20 K 40 S 10, F 2 = N 80 P 30 K 60 S 15, and F 3 = N 120 P 40 K 80 S 20 0 , and Seed from fruits of different node position viz. P 1 =from fruits borne on 1-3 nodes, P = from fruits borne on 4-8 nodes, P = from all fruits. The experiment was laid out in two factors Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with three replications. Results showed that a significant variation among the treatments in respect majority of the observed parameters. Different nutrient level and seed from different fruit position 3 had significant influence on growth, seed yield and quality components of okra. The maximum number of pods per plant (29.79), pod length (16.54 cm), individual pod weight (16.28g), number of seeds per pod (46.81) thousand seed weight (62.15g) was obtained from F 3 P treatment combination (N 120 P 40 K 80 S 20 1 Kg/ha with seeds from fruits borne on 1-3 nodes) whereas the minimum number of pods per plant (23.36), pod length (13.2 cm), individual pod weight (11.23g), number of seeds per pod (37.95) thousand seed weight (42.65g) was obtained from F 0 P treatment combination (control with from all fruits) It is apparent that F 3 P 1 3 treatment combination gave the best performance for the growth and seed yield of okra. = Control, F 2 1
