    A study of slow-release N-carrters on rice

    A field experiment was carried out to monitor the relative efficiency of urea, urea formaldehyde (UF), sulphur coated urea (SCU) and isobutylidene diurea (IBDU) each at the rate of 40, 80 and 120 kg N/ha on growth, yield and chemical composition of rice grown during aman season. Application of nitrogen caused a significant increase in number of tillers, height and yields of straw and grain irrespective of the sources. Among the chemical composition (N, P, K, Ca and Mg) of straw and grain only N content was significantly improved. All these components increased with nitrogen rate. The effectiveness of the N-carriers in increasing the parameters followed the order: SCU> Urea> IB DU > UF. Percent recovery of added nitrogen generally decreased with increasing amount of nitrogen. SCU was found to be superior to conventional urea whereas IBDU and UF were inferior due to slow release of nitrogen. Anaerobic incubation of urea, UF, SCU and IBDU for 4 weeks caused a significant release of NH4-N from 59.9 to 78.2%. An initial rapid production of NH4-N was followed by a gradual release with time. More than 75% urea and SCU decomposed to NH4-N within 2 and 4 weeks respectively. UF was more resistant to decomposition as compared to SCU and IBDU. However, the trend of degradation was similar for all the compounds. Accumulation of a small quantity of NO3-N disappeared rapidly within 2 weeks time.

    CALLUS INDUCTION AND PLANT REGENERATION IN ONION (Allium cepa L.) FROM SHOOT TIP EXPLANT

    An efficient protocol for callus induction and plant regeneration was established from shoot tip explant in onion (Allium cepa L.). Shoot tip from field-grown onion bulbs of Taherpuri and Indian cultivars were used as experimental materials in this investigation. Different concentrations of 2, 4-0 or NAA were used in MS medium for callus induction. The highest percent (86.6%) of callus induction was 86.6 in Taherpuri and in Indian (80%) cultivar in MS media containing 1.5 mg/I of 2,4-0 within fourteen to sixteen days of culture. Different concentrations and combinations of cytokinins (BAP and KIN) and auxins (NAA and lBAl were used for primary establishment of shoot tip. Maximum shoot proliferation was obtained after subculturing the callus in MS medium supplemented with 1.5 mg/l KIN + 1.5 mg/I of BAP within 20 days of callus culture. The highest percentage (100%) of root induction was achieved in Taherpuri cultivar on medium supplemented with 1.0 mg/l of NAA from in vitro raised shoots. Regenerated plantlets were successfully transferred on to the natural condition and showed healthy growth.

    Conversion of urea placed at different depths and its subsequent impact on growth and yield of rice

    In a study on the effect of urea with depths in rice {Oryza sativa Linn.), conversion of urea into NHj-N was maximum at 15 days in most of the treatments and into NOj-N was at 7 days. But with surface placement of urea it continued up to 15 days of placement and thereafter the concentrations of both declined with time in all the treatments. Fertilizers @ 80 kg N + 60 kg P + 40 kg K/ha placed 8-cm depth produced the highest dry matter and grain yield. At this treatment, the rice plants also accumulated highest amount of N in the shoot and grain.

    DIVERSITY ANALYSIS OF THE GERMPLASM OLEIFEROUS Brassica species

    An experiment was carried out with 40 rapeseed and mustard germplasms in the experimental farm of Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University. Dhaka during November 2005-March 2006 with a view to study the genetic divergence. Diversity was estimated by cluster distance. All the genotypes were grouped into six clusters. Principal component analysis, Cluster analysis and Canonical Variate analysis exhibited similar results. Significant variations were observed among the genotypes for all the parameters under study. Cluster 11had the maximum 10 and cluster I and III had the minimum 5 number of genotypes. The highest intra-cluster distance was observed in cluster V. The highest intercluster distance was observed between cluster I and VI and the lowest was found between the cluster III and V. The characters secondary branches/plant, siliquae/plant and yield/plant contributed maximum towards divergence among the rapeseed and mustard genotypes. The genotypes which had moderate inter-cluster distance coupled with medium to high yield could be utilized for screening suitable materials from large population. Considering diversity pattern, genetic status and other agronomic performances some of the materials viz. BO-6948 and SAUYC from cluster I; BD-9063. BD-9064 and BO-9071 from cluster 11; BD-9068 and BO-9077 from cluster Ill; BD-9078. BD-9106 and BO-6949 from cluster IV; BO-9079 and BO-9081 from cluster V and BO-9100 and BD-7812 from cluster VI were selected as superior parents for rapeseed and mustard improvement programme.

    GENETIC VARIABILITY, CORRELATION AND PATH COEFFICIENT ANALYSIS IN NINETEEN Brassica rapa GERMPLASM

    Nineteen genotypes of Brassica rapa were evaluated in order to find OUI genetic variability. correlation and path coefficient analysis of yield and yield contributing traits. All the genotypes showed highly significant variation for all the characters studied. High heritability together with high to moderate genetic advance in percentage of mean was observed for plant height, number of primary branches/plant. number of secondary branches/plant. number of siliquae/plant, 1000 seed weight and yield/plant. Correlation and path coefficient analysis suggested that during selection more emphasis should be given on plant height. number of primary branches/plant, number of seeds/siliqua, number of siliquaiplant and 1000 seed weight.

    N VITRO PLANT REGENERATION FROM INTERNODE AND LEAF SEGMENTS DERIVED CALLUS IN Adhatoda vasica NEES.

    Ile investigation was carried out 10 observe callus induction and subsequent regeneration potentiality of Adhatoda vasica NEES from internode and leaf segments of mature plants. The nature of callus was hard in texture and greenish white in colour in all concentrations of 2,4·D. On the other hand, the nature of callus was loose in texture and creamy in colour in all concentrations of NAA which was achieved from internode and leaf segments on MS medium supplemented with 4.0 mg/l NAA within four weeks of inoculation. The callus produced large number of shoots when cultured on MS medium with 1.0 mg/l BAP +0.1 mg/l NAA within 4 weeks of subculture. In vitro raised shoots were rooted on MS medium supplemented with 1.0 mg/l IBA within 4 weeks of subculture. III vitro grown plantlets with well root system were successfully established in natural condition through successive phages of acclimatization. The regenerated plants were healthy, uniform and identical to the donor plants and the survival percentage was 80.

    SELECTION CRITERIA FOR HIGH YIELDING GENOTYPES IN EARLY F2 GENERATION OF TWELVE INTER VARIETAL CROSSES OF Brassica rapa

    An experiment was conducted at Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University during November 200S-March 2006 to find out the selection criteria for selecting high yielding genotypes in early F, segregating population by estimating both correlation coefficient and path analysis between yield and its main economic traits in F, generation of twelve inter varietal crosses in Brassica rapa. The result of correlation analysis revealed that yield/plant had no significant positive association with plant height, number of secondary branches/plant, days to 50% flowering. length of siliqua, number of siliquae/plant and number of seeds/siliqua. Path coetlicient analysis also confirrned that number of seeds/siJiqua was important yield determinants followed by plant height, number of secondary branches/plant and number of siJiquae/plant. Based on the correlation and path coefficients, it may be inferred that number of seeds/siliqua and plant height must be used as selection criteria in early F, generation of twelve inter varietal crosses of Brassica rapa.

    VARIABILITY STUDY IN F2 PROGENIES OF THE INTER-VARIETAL CROSSES OF Brassica rapa

    An experiment was carried out by using the F, population of 12 inter-varietal crosses. including reciprocals, of the species Brassica rapa for estimating the magnitude of variations in characters. heritability and genetic advance. There were significant variations among different F, materials used in the experiment. Genetic parameters viz. number of primary branches/plant, number of secondary branches/plant. length of siliqua, number of seeds/siliqua. days to 50% flowering, 1000 seed weight and yield/plant showed least difference between genotypic and phenotypic variance. Plant height, length of siliqua, number of seeds/siliqua and days to 50% tlowering showed low genotypic and phenotypic co-efficient of variation. Number of primary branches/plant and secondary branches/plant showed high heritability coupled with high genetic advance and very high genetic advance in percentage of mean. However, the yield/plant, days to maturity and length of siliqua showed low heritability. Based on the variability study, some promising F, plants showing high heritability for yield contributing characters were selected from some of the cross combinations of the inter-varietal crosses of Brassica rapa for advancing the generations.
