CALLUS INDUCTION AND PLANT REGENERATION IN ONION (Allium cepa L.) FROM SHOOT TIP EXPLANT
    (Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University Research System (SAURES), Dhaka, Bangladesh, 2009-01) Rashid, M. H.; Khalekuzzaman, M.; Hossain, M. S.; Rahman, M. S.; Hasan, M. F.
An efficient protocol for callus induction and plant regeneration was established from shoot tip explant in onion (Allium cepa L.). Shoot tip from field-grown onion bulbs of Taherpuri and Indian cultivars were used as experimental materials in this investigation. Different concentrations of 2, 4-0 or NAA were used in MS medium for callus induction. The highest percent (86.6%) of callus induction was 86.6 in Taherpuri and in Indian (80%) cultivar in MS media containing 1.5 mg/I of 2,4-0 within fourteen to sixteen days of culture. Different concentrations and combinations of cytokinins (BAP and KIN) and auxins (NAA and lBAl were used for primary establishment of shoot tip. Maximum shoot proliferation was obtained after subculturing the callus in MS medium supplemented with 1.5 mg/l KIN + 1.5 mg/I of BAP within 20 days of callus culture. The highest percentage (100%) of root induction was achieved in Taherpuri cultivar on medium supplemented with 1.0 mg/l of NAA from in vitro raised shoots. Regenerated plantlets were successfully transferred on to the natural condition and showed healthy growth.

INCOME INEQUALITIES AMONG THE FARMERS IN SOME SELECTED AREAS OF BANGLADESH
    (Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University Research System (SAURES), Dhaka, Bangladesh, 2013-07) Rahman, M. S.; Mila, F. A.; Hasan, M. R.; Rayhan, S. J.
The study was conducted in Jessore and Rangpur district of Bangladesh to determine the income inequality among the farmers. Gini-coefficient and multiple regression analysis were used 10 achieve the objectives of the study. The findings of the study indicated more than 50% of the total income was come from non agriculture sources. More income inequality was found among the farmers of Jessore district than that of Rangpur district. Overall Gini-coefficient was found to be 0.25 in the study areas. Income from non agriculture sources contributes 52% of the overall income inequality. Income, education, family size, access to credit etc. had positive and significant effect on the welfare of the farmers. Credit with low interest rate, low cost production technologies played a vital role to increase the income as well as the welfare of the farmers in the study areas.

N VITRO ORGANOGENESIS AND PLANT REGEN ERATION IN BRASSICA SPECIES
    (Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University Research System (SAURES), Dhaka, Bangladesh, 2014-01) Hossain, D.; Rahman, M. S.; Ahamed, F.; Datta, A. K.; Hoque, M. A.
High frequency regeneration of plants from in vitro cultured tissues is perqursite to use genetic transformation to enrich oleiferous Brassica spp. Emphasis was given in this study on callus induction aptitude and subsequent plant regeneration from cotyledon and stem segment of three of Brassica spp. viz BARI sarisa-8 (Brassica napus), Daulat (Brassica juncea) and Sonali iBrassica campestriss. Two milligram per litre of Kn, BAP (1.0, 2.0, 3.0 mg/I) and constant concentration of NAA (0.5 mg/l) were used in MS medium. The result showed that stem segment produced maximum percentage of callus and subsequent shoot regeneration in all the four treatments BARI sarisa -8 Showed best performance in callus induction and it take minimum (6-7 days) for callus initiation. Shoot initiation potentiality also highest in the same variety under studied. The variety sonali showed poor performance for all the parameter under studied. Rooting occurred simultaneously from regenerated shoot on half strength MS medium supplemented with 0.5 mgll iliA. Regenerated plantlets were successfully transferred to pots containing a mixer of soil and vermiculite.

N VITRO PLANT REGENERATION FROM INTERNODE AND LEAF SEGMENTS DERIVED CALLUS IN Adhatoda vasica NEES.
    (Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University Research System (SAURES), Dhaka, Bangladesh, 2009-07) Rahman, M. S.; Ali, M. R.; Khalekuzzamarr, M.; Hossain, M. S.; Rashid, M. H.
Ile investigation was carried out 10 observe callus induction and subsequent regeneration potentiality of Adhatoda vasica NEES from internode and leaf segments of mature plants. The nature of callus was hard in texture and greenish white in colour in all concentrations of 2,4·D. On the other hand, the nature of callus was loose in texture and creamy in colour in all concentrations of NAA which was achieved from internode and leaf segments on MS medium supplemented with 4.0 mg/l NAA within four weeks of inoculation. The callus produced large number of shoots when cultured on MS medium with 1.0 mg/l BAP +0.1 mg/l NAA within 4 weeks of subculture. In vitro raised shoots were rooted on MS medium supplemented with 1.0 mg/l IBA within 4 weeks of subculture. III vitro grown plantlets with well root system were successfully established in natural condition through successive phages of acclimatization. The regenerated plants were healthy, uniform and identical to the donor plants and the survival percentage was 80.

PROFITABILITY AND RESOURCE USE EFFICIENCY OF MUSTARD PRODUCTION IN SIRAJGANJ DISTRICT, BANGLADESH
    (Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University Research System (SAURES), Dhaka, Bangladesh, 2013-01) Rayhan, S. J.; Rahman, M. S.; Sammy, H. M.; Saha, S.
The study was conducted in Sirajganj district of Bangladesh to determine the profitability and resource use efficiency of mustard production. Both descriptive statistics and functional analysis was done to achieve the objectives of the study. The findings of the study suggested that the total cost of mustard production was Tk. 51105.8 per hectare of which 52.6% was variable cost. Net return and BeR was found to be Tk. 34556.9 per hectare and 1.6? respectively. Urea and TSP had positive and significant effect on the yield of mustard. Farmers in the study area use different input inefficiently. Farmers in the study area also face some constraints like high price of inputs, non-availability of quality seed, low price of mustard etc. regarding mustard production. Financial support and crop management training are needed to farmer to increase the production of mustard in the study area.

Rural Women's Attitude and Involvement in Post--Harvest Processing of Vegetables
    (Journal of Animal and Plant Sciences, 2023-01) Kabir, M. H.; Afroz, S.; Alam, M. M.; Rahman, M. S.
Traditionally women are mostly engaged in household-based income generating activities. Post-harvest processing of vegetables has recently gained much attention due to its value addition utilities. Therefore, in this study, we tried to understand women farmers’ attitudes towards and involvement in, post-harvest processing of vegetables. Data were collected through face-to-face interviews using a pre-tested questionnaire from 212 respondents in Dhaka district of Bangladesh. The data were interpreted with descriptive statistics, multivariate regression analysis and a logit model. About 71% of rural women had a favorable attitude towards post-harvest processing; 43% of them were involved in the post-harvest processing of vegetables. Women's attitude towards post-harvest processing of vegetables was influenced by age, education, household size, and their frequency to travel outside of their social system. Their involvement in post-harvest processing of vegetables was affected by education, group membership, media contact and time spent in home management. ‘Gender disparity in earnings’ was the most severe barrier to expanding women's involvement in vegetable processing, followed by ‘lack of land ownership status’, ‘spouse dominance’ and ‘social norms and tradition’. Motivating women in income-generating activities and introducing advanced yet low-cost and less-labour intensive technologies would enable them to participate in the post-harvest processing of vegetables.
