Item A local approach to urban housing design in bangladesh(University of Newcastle upon Tyne, 1987-05) Mallick, Fuad H.; Wilkinson, Nickone of the most important functions in the production Process of housing is the design of houses. The degree of success of the design depends on how well the house responds to users needs and its performance as a modifier of the external environment. Given the wide variety of problems facing urban housing in Bangladesh, the extent to which built up housing successfully meets user and environmental needs is a major area of concern. .There is a growing tendency to adapt western ideas as models for urban housing. Although they are insensitive to local needs they are accepted because there exists no alternatives. This dissertation attempts to study the influence of local factors on urban housing design through a systematic analysis of traditional housing and examples of existing urban housing' This in combination with the design determinants for urban housing forms the basis for a local approach to urban housing design. The approach is outlined in the final chapter recommendations for the design of houses in urban in the form of a set of areas.Item A modern architectural renaissance of Comilla Town Hall(BRAC University, 2024-11) Naima, Jarin Saima Binte Mannan; Mallick, Fuad H.; Ahmed, Iftekhar; Chowdhooree, Imon; Reza, Mohammad Habib; Rahman, Mohammed Zillur; Ahmad, JalalThe Modern Architectural Renaissance of Comilla Town Hall envisions transforming a 137 year old cultural landmark into a dynamic fusion of heritage and contemporary design. It is the ideal hub for professional interaction with the news industry at the national and international levels. It holds significant value to the journalist community of Bangladesh as it guides them by maintaining rules and regulations in the professional field. On the other hand, the place plays a vital role in highlighting social, economic, cultural, and political activities. Though it is a part of a government institution, Press Club can work independently for the sake of liberty. As media is an important tool for civic society, the media clubs enlisted as a proper civic space for the people. The present press club was established in 1954 on Topkhana road, Dhaka in Pakistan period, and latterly elaborated as the National Press Club of Bangladesh in 1977. The new proposal illustrates building an international standard media center that could serve the modern needs of professionals and general people. The required functions of the project indicate the development of present seminar halls, meeting rooms, press-museum, press libraries, auditoriums, rentable office space, cafeterias, etc. However, architecturally it is a challenging project to draw a balanced civic space among the people and authority of the state.Item Bangladesh Industrial Technical Assistance Centre (BITAC), Barishal(BRAC University, 2024-11) Aunsari, M M Rashidur Reza; Mallick, Fuad H.; Ahmed, Iftekhar; Chowdhooree, Imon; Reza, Mohammad Habib; Rahman, Mohammed Zillur; Ahmad, JalalIn the rapidly evolving world of technology and innovation, technical training plays a pivotal role in driving a nation’s growth and development. The gem of Bangladesh's tourism, Cox’s Bazar is one of the impeccable tourists spots of south asia with the longest uninterrupted sandy beach of the world. Although the tourism sector have done well in the development of the accommodation and transportation facilities as well as basic amenities, there lies a big lacking in entertainment and social opportunities. While the BGB welfare trust is having a difficult time coping against the fast growing hospitality businesses around the town with their mere guest house, they are looking for new ways to sustain their business and pull people into their institution. Due to the lack of entertainment and activities for tourists to enjoy the country’s favorite tourist spot, an entertainment hub has been proposed to increase the destination attractiveness of the place.Item Bidrohee Bangla: memorial for the rebels of Bengal, Karnaphulli riverbank, Chittagong(BRAC University, 2012-04) Rubaiyat-Ur-Rahman; Mallick, Fuad H.; Ali, Zainab F.; Chowdhuree, Imon; Shimul, Shakil Ahmed; Kabir, K. H.; Hossain, Sakhawat; Nobi, Mahmudun; Sultana, Rubaiya; Khan, FerdausThe idea of lost history remains intact in our generation today. Along the seperation of India, Bangladesh the Hero’s of that time have also been separated which resulted on a conflict of preservation. Those Hero’s seldom remmembered, have all if not mostly been lost instead of being celebrated by every generation to come after them. Thus the rebelion against the british before the liberation war has been lost. The british had ruled our Bengal for 186 years in which many rebelions have been born and preached for what they have achieved. But today, they stand in the times of our rebelious history as long forgotten heros. In order to hold the celebration of their legacy and bring back the energy they once had, a Memorial for the liberals of Bengal is being proposed. The memorial will represent the rebelion and the rebels that stood against the british and will be against the test of time.Item Campus design of Shanto Mariam University of Creative Technology: Showcasing creativity through urban lens(BRAC University, 2019-08) Rahman, Tasnia Naila; Mallick, Fuad H.; Reza, Mohammad Habib; Nobi, Abul Fazal MahmudunIn the recent years the government of this country of Bangladesh has made it a mandate upon all forms of universities of this country to function within a permanent campus of their own given the dire need of it. However, not all universities have the equal scope or opportunity to be able to avail a favorable site be it in terms of size or land price. At present, land prices in Dhaka are soaring to new heights every now and then, therefore it makes all the more difficult for universities to acquire desirable or adequate site areas. The rising population being another crucial factor, leads to more lands being developed as residential areas to accommodate the people. Therefore, universities have to be able to adapt to thrive within limited land space at the same time being in harmony with surrounding residential context. The project of the permanent campus for Shanto Mariam university of creative technology is set to be designed within a context similar to the above mentioned scenario. The aim of this project was to design a campus within a limited site and rather create a cultural community hub for the surrounding dense residential areas while at the same time showcasing the creative persona of the university and its activities leading to cultural enhancement. In an attempt to do so, issues such as mobility and facilities for the public have been given keen attention to in order for the university to act as a breathing ground for the surrounding areas as well as adding value to the residential area.Item Center for training and rehabilitation of destitute women(BRAC University, 2019-08) Ahmed, Samia; Mallick, Fuad H.; Reza, Mohammad Habib; Nobi, Abul Fazal MahmudunMymensingh is one of the poorest region in our country and their women have been struggling for a long period to establish their rights in family, society and in the state. The initiative addresses the growing demand for immersive educational settings that inspire awe of the cosmos and encourage scientific inquiry among the general population. The goal of the design concept is to create a dynamic, interactive environment where architecture acts as a catalyst for engagement and discovery in addition to providing a backdrop. The structure combines two separate but complementary uses: a planetarium that uses cutting-edge projection systems to create an immersive astronomical experience and a Astronomy Research Center that features interactive research on physics, technology, and environmental sciences. The planetarium provides an amazing setting for astronomical observation and celestial education, while the design places a strong emphasis on creating adaptable, modular rooms that can support shifting displays and educational programs. In order to reduce the building's ecological impact, the architectural form incorporates sustainable materials and energy-efficient design techniques, drawing inspiration from astronomical phenomena, natural geometry, and cutting-edge technologies. With open, flowing layouts that enable both visual and physical connections between different programmatic aspects, the relationship between the outdoor and interior areas is thoughtfully studied. The building's focal point, the planetarium, is intended to be both an experience and symbolic place that evokes the boundless reaches of the cosmos. This thesis investigates how architecture may improve public knowledge of science, pique interest, and cultivate a respect for the cosmos.Item Design of a five star hotel, Cox’s Bazar(BRAC University, 2026-01) Priya, Dania Ismam; Ahmed, Iftekhar; Faruk, Mohammad; Kabir, Saimum; Ali, Zainab Faruqui; Mallick, Fuad H.The proposed 5 Star Hotel at Laboni Beach, Cox’s Bazar, is planned as a major coastal hospitality project proposed by Bangladesh Parjatan Corporation to support the growth of high end tourism in Bangladesh. New businesses are opening everyday in every possible sector. Taking purchasing power parity into account Bangladesh is the 44th largest economy in the world. Bangladesh is also listed in the N-11 (next 11) by the Goldman Sachs Group, Inc. Among all the industries, at present textiles and readymade garments‟ industry are the top ones. Recently WTO has ranked Bangladesh as the 4th largest exporter of readymade garments‟ in the world. This sector contributes for 75% of foreign currency earning for Bangladesh. Textiles and Readymade Garments‟ sector contributes 13% of GDP and employs more than 3,000,000 people. It has bought benefit and blessings for millions of people in the country. This industry has played a significant role in elevating economic and living standard of millions of families all over the country. Along with bringing blessing for the nation, textile and RMG industry also hold the record of experiencing some worst industrial accidents in the country. Taking advantage of poor surveillance of concerned authorities‟ rules, laws and codes are often violated in construction sector of our country and factory buildings are no exception. It is popularly believed and often proven true by incidences that the building codes are only maintained in paper works and hardly during the construction phase. Later as the owner focuses on the interior works, machine placement etc. the floors are often over loaded with machineries, causing more population load during operational hours, narrowing circulation spaces, thus making it difficult for the people to access the emergency route during an emergency. Many factories do not arrange regular drill; therefore the workers discover themselves in an alien situation whenever an emergency situation arises, causing panic, stampede etc. that further escalate the degree of casualty. In the conditions as above the aforementioned thesis is proposed to evaluate the design of garments factories from a safety point of view especially in case of a fire out. The dissertation would focus on literatures, expert interviews and case study on previous incidence to find out the major reasons for casualty in case of fire in a RMG factory. The dissertation would than contain some software simulation with space syntax depthmap to evaluate the validity of the findings and would propose suggestions to alleviate the chances of casualty in RMG factories especially in case of fire.Item Ethnic Heritage & Cultural Research Academy, Durgapur, Netrakona(BRAC University, 2022-09) Rashid, Nafiur; Mallick, Fuad H.; Mahmudun Nobi, Abul Fazal; Kibria, Naim Ahmed; Kaikobaad, Saad MohammadA large number of tribal or indigenous people live in Bangladesh's east northern region. This area is home to around 12,000 indigenous people. In comparison to Bengalis, they are a minority. They should, however, be treated with the same respect and social acceptability as the others. These individuals have a distinct culture, ancestry, and language. To the rest of the country, these are more valuable. This type of activity will assist them in bringing their standards and values to the surface. They may break out from their small shells and adapt to Bangladesh's ever changing environment.Item Implementing standing orders on disaster (SOD) at Union level: the case of Kakua Union, Tangail district and Kazipur Union of sirajganj district, Bangladesh(BRAC University, 2008-09) Rashid, Mohammad Harunor; Mallick, Fuad H.; Maniruzzaman, K. M.Bangladesh is arguably the world's most disaster prone country. Repeated disasters destroy the economic resource base of the poor people and drain out the economic potentials. The impacts and vulnerabilities of disasters could be minimized through proper disaster management planning and by integrating disaster management activities with local and national development plan. The study has been undertaken to explore how Union Disaster Management Committees (UDMCs) could be made more functional and proactive in implementing standing orders on Disaster (SOD). Union Disaster Management Committees (UDMCs) can play the key role for local level risk reduction planning. Standing orders on Disaster (SOD) issued by the Government of Bangladesh clearly defines the roles and responsibilities of UDMCs. In reality most of the UDMCs are not functional due to various reasons like lack of awareness/ knowledge, lack of resources, and strengthening UDMCs, UDMC members should be trained up for local risk reduction planning. Political commitment, allocation of resources, establishing proper monitoring & follow up system and Disaster Management Act are the issues which need to be addressed immediately for implementing standing orders on disaster (SOD) at Union level.Item In support of urban adaptation: a participatory assessment process for secondary cities in Vietnam and Bangladesh(© 1996 Taylor & Francis Online, 2014-02-26) Mallick, Fuad H.; McEvoy, Darryn; Ahmed, Iftekhar; Trundle, Alexei; Sang, Le Thanh; Diem, Nguyen Ngoc; Suu, Lam Thi Thu; Quoc, Tran Ba; Rahman, Rezaur; Rahman, Mohammad Aminur; Mukherjee, Nandan; Nishat, AinunVietnam and Bangladesh are countries already impacted by weather-related extreme events. Scientific modelling projections indicate that climate change, and changes to climate variability, will increase risks for both countries in the future. Targeting this challenging contemporary agenda, this paper reflects on the lessons learned from a collaborative research project, funded by the Asia Pacific Network for Global Change Research, which was carried out jointly in the Vietnamese city of Huế and the Bangladeshi city of Satkhira. The focus on secondary cities was intentional as they face unique challenges – a combination of rapid growth and development, adverse climate-related impacts, and in many cases less institutional adaptive capacity than their primary city counterparts. Whilst numerous assessment tool kits already exist, these have typically been developed for rural or natural resource contexts. Therefore, the objective of this action research activity was to develop a flexible suite of participatory assessment tools and methodologies that were refined specifically for the urban context; as well as being easy to use by local practitioners at the city and neighbourhood scales. This paper summarizes the research and stakeholder engagement activity that was carried out before presenting the main findings from each of the case study cities (detailing both climate-related risks and potential adaptation options). This analysis is further extended to include a reflective critique of the assessment process, a comparative analysis of the activity carried out in the two case studies, and the ‘South–South’ learning process that occurred between project partners. Key findings are then distilled to put forward recommendations in support of climate change assessment activity in secondary cities across the Asia-Pacific region.Item Khulna divisional government public library(BRAC University, 2019-08) Mou, Mousumi Akhter; Mallick, Fuad H.; Reza, Mohammad Habib; Nobi, Abul Fazal MahmudunKhulna Divisional Government Public Library will be a platform for the citizens of Khulna to social interact and live, to share and gain knowledge. the purpose of this library is not only be a knowledge hub, but also a place for social-interaction because this is a divisional library and it will connect people from different districts. every year, a book fair is held in this library throughout February month. social-interaction is already present there but it needed to be enhanced throughout the year. to create a knowledge-hub it is needed to place activities to- gain knowledge, create knowledge and disseminate to form a place for social-interaction. it will be an iconic civic hub not only through the conventional ways but also in the ways which people have enlightened through ages. this library will play a vibrant role in the development of our culture that promotes reading, motivated readers and learners for life.Item Motivating volunteers : a case of cyclone preparedness programme volunteers in Bangladesh(BRAC University, 2012) Amin, Md. Ruhul; Mallick, Fuad H.Cyclone Preparedness Programme (CPP) volunteers are increasingly being relied upon to aware people living in the coastal belt of Bangladesh for reducing loss of lives and assets due to cyclone. This volunteerism is continuing for the last four decades with several unique challenges specific to availability of adequate equipment and limited resources for capacity of volunteers’ to play their roles during cyclone. The purpose of this study is to examine the factors affecting motivation of volunteers. Another aim was to identify the underlying causes and/or hindering factors that discourage or demotivates volunteers and finally to find out factors affecting female volunteers to work as volunteers at the time of disasters. This study uses data from qualitative interviews with 10 volunteer groups, 5 community groups and 16 key informants dealing with CPP to explore volunteer motivations. Besides, quantitative data was also used from an assessment conducted by CPP with support from Save the Children in 2009. Findings revealed that most of the volunteers reported having more than one motives for enrolling them as volunteers. Of the several categories of motivations identified, those relating to altruistic concerns for others and community, social responsibility, religious benefits, reputation and hoping to gain community recognition/ honor were the most frequently mentioned. Volunteers also saw volunteering as an opportunity to gain knowledge and skills and or to put their own skills to good use. A few of the volunteers were hoping to gain financial benefits in course of their volunteerism. The CPP has good understanding of volunteers’ motives but a mismatch between organizational goals and volunteer motivations, and inadequate funding meant that volunteers’ most pressing motives were not satisfied. This led to discontentment and resentment among volunteers.Item Muktagacha Cultural Centre(BRAC University, 2024-11) Hiya, Sivana Bahar; Mallick, Fuad H.; Reza, Mohammad Habib; Ahmed, Iftekhar; Chowdhooree, Imon; Rahman, Mohammed ZillurMuktagacha Upazila, located in Mymensingh is a vibrant town.
