Effect of physical parameters on the decolorization of multiple synthetic textile dyes by bacteria recovered from dye contaminated soil and water
(BRAC University, 2018-07) Kamal, Mostafa; Bhuiyan, Dr. Mohammad Nazrul Islam; Choudhury, Dr. Naiyyum
Textile wastewater is a complex mixture of many contaminating materials. These include a high concentration of salts, acids, heavy metals, organochlorine-based pesticides, pigments, dyes etc. Dye is the first pollutant to be recognized in wastewater and many synthetic dyes are toxic, mutagenic and carcinogenic in nature. This makes dyes imperative to be removed from textile wastewater. Current physicochemical textile dye removal methods are less efficient and expensive. Bioremediation through utilization of synthetic dye degrading bacteria can be considered as an effective aid to the clean-up process. The present study attempts to decolorize eight synthetic textile dyes: Novacron Brilliant Blue C-B, Novacron Dark Blue S-GL, Novacron Navy S-GI, Novacron Turquoise GN, Novacron Super Black-G, Novacron Ruby S-3B, Avitera Brilliant Yellow SE and Novacron Yellow S-3R by newly isolated bacterial strains from dye contaminated soil and water. Dye decolorizing ability of bacteria was screened on Nutrient broth containing mixed dyes. Effects of different physical parameters like dye concentration, temperature, pH, agitation and seed culture concentration on the dye degrading ability of selected isolates were tested. The potential isolates were selected for BiOLOG identification. Pseudomonas aeruginosa (S9A6) exhibited to be the most promising amongst the isolated bacteria for decolorizing synthetic dyes, followed by Bacillus cereus/thuringiensis (S1A6). Pseudomonas aeruginosa was tested further for effects of mixed dye concentration and the repeated addition of dye aliquots up to four cycles. The decolorization obtained in this study was expressed in percentages with Pseudomonas aeruginosa, S9A6 having up to 98.5% decolorization of Novacron Super Black-G, 98.4% of Novacron Yellow S-3R, 98.3% of Novacron Dark Blue S-GL, 97.4% of Novacron Navy S-GI, 96.7% of Novacron Ruby S-3B, 94.2% of Novacron Brilliant Blue C-B and 88.6% decolorization of six synthetic dye mixture for 100 ppm of dye concentration when incubated under stationary condition at 37°C for 72 hours. However, there was no observable color difference for Novacron Turquoise GN and Avitera Brilliant Yellow SE by any of the isolated bacteria. The prime candidate Pseudomonas aeruginosa also exhibited very good ability to decolorize repeated additions for six individual dyes up to the fourth cycle without supplementation of additional nutrients, which is remarkable criteria for commercial applicability of it in textile effluent treatment.

(Daffodil International University, 2015-06-01) Kamal, Mostafa; Kamruzzaman, Md.
Bangladesh is one of the promising housing markets with considerable growth potentials though it has been experiencing slow growth since 2010 due to some major problems. To resolve the housing shortage and revive the growth potentialities, providing housing finance is one of the important aspects that must be considered to meet housing needs. Though there has been continued expansion of the financial system, the need for housing finance remains inadequate. Many initiatives have been taken, including government-subsidized housing finance to help people to own a house, yet, low and middle-income groups have been confronting difficulties to get housing finance. This paper presents a comparative study between two specialized housing financial institutions in the development of housing sector in Bangladesh. It has been found that BDH is doing much better than that of BHBFC though it’s the pioneer specialized housing finance institution in Bangladesh. There is also a discussion about factors affecting housing finance by these two specialized housing finance institutions. Data are collected from secondary sources and analyzed by using qualitative analysis and regression analysis by using SPSS software.

Job Satisfaction of Female Workers in Different Garments Factories in Dhaka City: An Intertemporal Comparison
(Daffodil International University, 2006-07-01) Alam, S. M. Ikhtiar; Kamal, Mostafa
Job satisfaction is an attitude that reflects the extent to which an individual is gratified by or fulfilled in his/her job. It is an affective or emotional response toward various facets of one’s job. This meaning of job satisfaction implies that job satisfaction is not a unitary concept. Rather a person can be relatively satisfied with one aspect of his or her job and dissatisfied with one or more other aspects. Thus, we can differentiate at least two aspects of job satisfaction ⎯ facet satisfaction and overall satisfaction. Facet satisfaction is the tendency for an employee to be more or less satisfied with various facets of his or her job. A large number of related research has been conducted in different countries including Bangladesh. Alam (1986) conducted a research on the job satisfaction of female workers in different garment factories in Dhaka City in 1983. He measured the level of overall satisfaction and analyzed the nature of facet satisfaction of 200 female workers. He concluded that a minor percentage of female workers in different garment factories are satisfied with their jobs, and there is a positive relationship between their level of job satisfaction and the level of wages/salaries and other identified factors. The objective of the present study is to measure the overall level of job satisfaction of female workers in different garment factories and to identify factors contributing to job satisfaction and factors contributing to job dissatisfaction. The present study also ranks all identified factors according to their relative importance by using a formula developed by Alam in 1983 (Alam, 1986). Finally, the present study makes intertemporal comparisons of overall job satisfaction level and of the nature of facet satisfaction over the twenty two-year period (between 1983 and 2005). Such intertemporal comparisons are necessary because of the fact that over the last twenty two years, as the garment industries of the country has expanded significantly, the nature of human resource management in this sector has changed in many aspects. As a result, job satisfaction status and the absolute as well as relative importance of factors contributing to satisfaction level are expected to change.

(Intelektual Pustaka Media Utama (IPMU), 2023-06-15) Shahjahan, Md.; Islam, M. Mazharul; Hossain, Md Kamrul; Amin, Md. Ruhul; Kamal, Mostafa; Islam, Mohammad Saiful
The objective of this study was to examine the levels and determinants of knowledge and attitudes toward COVID-19 among adult people in Bangladesh, using data from an online survey, conducted in May 2021. Descriptive and inferential statistical analysis were performed to extract findings from data. The survey covered 993 respondents. A high level (78.4%) of effective knowledge and positive attitude (78.6%) were observed among the Bangladeshi people. More than eighty percent of the respondents could correctly mention at least one important symptom, mode of transmission, and preventive measures of COVID-19. Good knowledge and positive attitudes were found to be significantly higher among males, living in Dhaka city, having a higher level of education, health professionals, and the wealthiest people. Knowledge about COVID-19 has significant association with positive attitude of people towards COVID-19. Despite the high level of knowledge and positive attitudes, there still prevails some misconceptions among a group of people, as one-third of the respondents opined that COVID-19 is a divine punishment and 13% were in favor of keeping it secrete if COVID-19 infection happen to them. The findings underscore the need for more educational program and behavior change communication (BCC) for the subgroups of the population that has been identified with poor knowledge and negative attitudes towards COVID-19.

The Burden of Chronic Diseases and Patients' Preference for Healthcare Services among Adult Patients Suffering From Chronic Diseases in Bangladesh
(Scopus, 23-01-29) Mahumud, Rashidul A; Sultana, Marufa; Kundu, Satyajit; Rahman, Md A; Mistry, Sabuj K; Kamara, Joseph K; Kamal, Mostafa; Ali, Mohammad A; Hossain, Md G; Brooks, Cristy; Khan, Asaduzzaman; Alam, Khorshed; Renzaho, Andre M N
Background: Low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) have a disproportionately high burden of chronic diseases, with inequalities in health care access and quality services. This study aimed to assess patients' preferences for healthcare services for chronic disease management among adult patients in Bangladesh. Methods: The present analysis was conducted among 10,385 patients suffering from chronic diseases, drawn from the latest Household Income and Expenditure Survey 2016-2017. We used the multinomial logistic regression to investigate the association of chronic comorbid conditions and healthcare service-related factors with patients' preferences for healthcare services. Results: The top four dimensions of patient preference for healthcare services in order of magnitude were quality of treatment (30.3%), short distance to health facility (27.6%), affordability of health care (21.7%) and availability of doctors (11.0%). Patients with heart disease had a 29% significantly lower preference for healthcare affordability than the quality of healthcare services (relative risk ratio [RRR] = 0.71; 0.56-0.90). Patients who received healthcare services from pharmacies or dispensaries were more likely to prefer a short distance to a health facility (RRR = 6.99; 4.80-9.86) or affordability of healthcare services (RRR = 3.13; 2.25-4.36). Patients with comorbid conditions were more likely to prefer healthcare affordability (RRR = 1.39; 1.15-1.68). In addition, patients who received health care from a public facility had 2.93 times higher preference for the availability of medical doctors (RRR = 2.93; 1.70-5.04) than the quality of treatment in the health facility, when compared with private service providers. Conclusions: Patient preferences for healthcare services in chronic disease management were significantly associated with the type of disease and its magnitude and characteristics of healthcare providers. Therefore, to enhance service provision and equitable distribution and uptake of health services, policymakers and public health practitioners should consider patient preferences in designing national strategic frameworks for chronic disease management.
