Item A silver-tongued writer: a deep learning and NLP based Bangla sentence composer with proper linguistic affection(BRAC University, 9/25/2023) Mazhar, Arko; Zaman, Muhammad Rafid; Islam, Md. With the advent of the 21st century, the usage of online interaction has expanded significantly. Text-based communication is prevalent in many aspects of our lives. For example, social media, email, and business invitations. It has also allowed us to maintain relationships with others, irrespective of time or geographic location. While communicating, people typically overlook the text-style representation. This establishes a barrier between the sender and receiver, preventing the message from being correctly interpreted by the receiver. Due to a lack of proper selection of words, one might face challenges in getting the expected reply from the receiver. In addition, erroneous interpretations of these writings might have detrimental psychological impacts on individuals. The fundamental objective of this paper is to develop a Bangla sentence composer model capable of detecting impolite statements in written text and transferring the style to politeness with proper affection. We begin by discussing several classification approaches. For this purpose, we used a combination of deep learning and transformer-based techniques to identify linguistic politeness from Bangla sentences. Simple RNN, CNN BiLSTM, LSTM, GRU, and various pre-trained versions of BERT were the algorithms we employed. Among all models, BERT produced much superior outcomes than the others. BanglaBERT Showed the best result with an accuracy of 84%. Also, we constructed our own dictionary to replace the impolite and harsh words. After correctly recognizing the expression, we intend to replace harsh impolite words from input sentences using our custommade dictionary. The dictionary consists of 410 impolite, harsh words and their corresponding polite version. After that, the result is modified using the BanglaT5 BanglaParaphrase, a Bangla text-to-text generation model. With the aid of this combined deep learning approach, we attempt to identify the optimum sentence variant that does not negatively affect human emotion. Using these techniques, we can achieve preferable results that will earn the recipient’s appreciation through our preferred sentence composer approach.Item A Web Based Application (Online Examination System)(Daffodil International University, 2018-05) Islam, Md. To achieve this goal we have used some latest version of toolkits such as HTML5, CSS3, Bootstrap4, MySQL, PHP7, JavaScript etc. we also have use agile model for implement our project plan. To ensure the security we have implemented the automatic and random question generation, question encryption, and automatic full screen lock system. The system is based on multiple choices and Fill in the blanks type questions. We will add subjective type questions in this project. We will integrate speech recognizer to our online examination system project in future too. So it will be a secured and efficient system for all the users and an overview for the future developersItem An Assessment of Borrower Satisfaction of Micro Finance Services in Grameen Bank of Bangladesh(Faculty of Business Studies, BUFT, 2021-08-01) Saki, Fatima; Islam, Md. NazrulPurpose: This study is aimed to determine the nature and dimensions of microfinance service and to have an understanding on borrower satisfaction level using various determinants of Grameen bank in Bangladesh. Methodology: This analysis of the study is based on primary data collected from 312 respondents who are the borrowers of Grameen bank. Five point likert scale questionnaire is used for quantification and chi-square test is used for the analysis. Findings: The results indicate that economic conditions of the borrowers, their income, and loan facilities of the bank, interest rates on the funds, insurance policy of the bank, transparent transactions, and bankers’ behavior with the borrowers have significant influence on borrower satisfaction. The study has also drawn some inferences such as reducing the interest rate, arranging training programs for their officials, giving individual borrower attention, improving customer service department etc. to foster better banking services for superior borrower satisfaction. Limitations: The research study has focused on six districts in Bangladesh. This could be extended to more areas. Time period for the study could also be extended. Practical Implications: The outcomes of the study would be helpful in formulating customer services policies and improving the quality of services to ensure much satisfaction to the borrowers for future growth. This system enhances project management by improving the tracking of progress, procurement, and sustainability compliance. The DCNUP project, supported by the World Bank, aims to upgrade public spaces and infrastructure, emphasizing transparency, accountability, and efficiency through digitized reporting. The Dhaka City Neighbourhood Upgrading Project (DCNUP) introduce this Web-based Monitoring and Evaluation (M and E) system as pilot basis for Dhaka South City Corporation. The report finds how digital tools can enhance transparency, facilitate timely reporting, and ensure better use of public resources by implementing a comprehensive Monitoring and Evaluation system. At last chapter six is the appended part of this report.Item Detection and molecular characterization of multi-drug resistant nonfermentative Gram-negative bacteria from clinical isolates(University of Dhaka, 2021-08-24) Islam, Md. NazrulThe increasing rate of carbapenem resistant nonfermentative Gram-negative bacteria is a serious global health threat. Almost all studied isolates of Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Acinetobacter baumannii showed resistance to carbapenem. Carbapenem is the last option for treating Multi-drug resistant (MDR) P. aeruginosa and A. Baumannii but resistance against this drug has been emerging. Two types of β-lactamases differentiated by their mode of target hydrolysis, serine β-lactamase and metallo-β-lactamase (MBL). These are major foci of the present study in nonfermentative Gram-negative isolates of P. aeruginosa and A. baumannii. When studying various virulence properties, a majority of both P. aeruginosa and A. baumannii isolates showed hemolytic activity. However, formation of capsule, invasiveness and cytotoxic activity were observed only in the case of A. baumannii. Among the 100 P. aeruginosa and A. baumannii isolates tested, 92% and 35% showed MBL positive, respectively. Verona Integron-encoded metallo-β-lactamase (VIM) is an important MBL which confers resistance to regular using antimicrobials and now a days carbapenems became resistant due to this enzyme. We obtained a total of 16 VIM encoded MBLs from 100 P. aeruginosa isolates, but none from a similar number of A. baumannii strains. The sequences of VIM gene from 16 strains together with 22 other similar sequences, retrieved from the NCBI GenBank database were used to construct the phylogenetic tree to understand the nearest neighbour of the study sequences. Genetic divergence and homogeneity of the sequences are apparent in the phylogenetic tree. For VIM type of MBL, P. aeruginosa phylogenetic analysis showed similarities with the strains of India, Thailand, Nepal, Egypt, Turkey, UK, USA and Tunisia (93-100%). These findings suggest that the blaVIM gene is similar to global circulating strains. From Bootstrap table it has been found that 90-100% nucleotide similarities exist among the 16 Bangladeshi strains. Comparable results of nucleotide and amino acid sequences of VIM showed differences with a reference strain retrieved from the NCBI for 4 Bangladeshi P. aeruginosa strains and among the changes, three were in important positions (72, 145 and 146) as these changes brought significant modification in amino acid sequences from polar/nonpolar to nonpolar/polar that might affect the enzymatic nature of VIM. We obtained 6 New Delhi Metallo-β-lactamase-1(NDM-1) positive isolates from 100 A. baumannii strains, but none from the same number of P. aeruginosa strains. Among these 6 blaNDM-1 genes, 5 sequences together with 17 other similar sequences retrieved from the NCBI GenBank database were used to construct the phylogenetic tree to understand the nearest neighbor of the study sequences. Genetic divergence and homogeneity of the sequences are apparent in the phylogenetic tree. Amongst the DNA sequences obtained in our study, the isolates MN226842, MN226843, MN226844 and MN226846 formed distinct lineages with the strains from India, while only isolate MN226845 shared similarity and was found to be closely related to the sequences with Iran, Egypt and Korea. From these findings, we can predict that the NDM-1 may have been transmitted in Bangladesh from India. Bootstrap table shows 100% nucleotide similarities among the 5 Bangladeshi strains. On the other hand, 10 strains from China showed 52% similarity. Comparable results of NDM-1 of A. baumannii showed no differences in nucleotide and amino acid sequences with a reference strain retrieved from the NCBI which suggest that these are clonal. The study reports on the presence of blaVIM and blaNDM-1 gene in nonfermentative Gram-negative bacteria in Bangladesh for the first time.Item DETERMINANTS OF HYPERTENSION IN RURAL AREA OF CHANDPUR DISTRICT(Daffodil International University, 2015-06-01) Papri, Nowshin; Islam, Md. Nazrul; Raihan, Md. RaselThis study was carried out to assess the level of awareness about hypertension among hypertensives leaving in Ashikathi and Kollanpur union of Chandpur district. A total of 146 adult hypertensive patients were selected conveniently. Data were collected by face to face interview using a questionnaire. Present study revealed that among 146 hypertensive patients 65.1% were suffering from hypertension for less than 1 year and 61.6% respondents blood pressure is within normal limit. Mean systolic and diastolic blood pressure were 134.25 + 15.58 and 84.08 + 8.91 respectively. More than fifty six percent respondents had fair knowledge about the meaning of hypertension. Regarding the risk factor of hypertension 52.7% had fair knowledge. Study findings reflected fair knowledge in 65.1% about signs and symptoms, 45.9% about complication, 47.3 about prognosis, 67.1 about their own blood pressure status and 53.4% about prevention. Regarding self-care practice 50.0% were taking their medicines regularly and 45.9% checked their blood pressure within 3 months. Continuity correction and Fisher’s Exact test with two tailed significant showed that occupation, education and marital status correlated with hypertension awareness. To measure the strength of association between different variables multiple logistic regression analysis was done.Item Determination of the Bio-Chemical Parameters and the Amount of Trace and Toxic Metals in Baby Foods, Jams, Jellies and Juices Available in Bangladesh(University of Rajshahi, 4055) Ahmmed, Lokonuzzaman; Islam, Md. SaidulThe thesis entitled ‘Determination of the Bio-chemical Parameters and the Amount of Trace and Toxic Metals in Baby Foods, Jams, Jellies and Juices Available in Bangladesh’ deals with the estimation of bio-chemical parameters, trace and toxic metals in baby foods and some fruit products, e.g. jams, jellies and juices in the view of nutrition, dietary supplements, necessity of essential metals and the harmful effect of toxic metals for infants as well as adults. The results obtained during the course of PhD program have been compiled into five chapters as described below. Chapter One presents the importance of bio-chemical parameters, trace and essential metals and their biological activity in human life. Milk proteins represent one of the greatest contributions of milk to human nutrition. Research indicates that children may develop food allergies if solids are introduced too early. Formula and breast milk provide the perfect balance of nutrients that they need. The knowledge of nutrition in different types of fruit products especially jams, jellies and juices are very significant due to their good food values since these are made from fruit, water and sugar. Jams, jellies and juices provide more essential nutrients in significant amounts as well as some minerals. Our study was to find out some important bio-chemical parameters of baby foods, such as percentages of protein, reducing sugar, non-reducing sugar, total sugar, ash and moisture by using different biochemical methods. The amounts of some trace and toxic metals were also determined by using atomic absorption spectrophotometer (AAS). Chapter Two covers the experimental part which includes the listing of chemicals, physicochemical methods for the determination of biochemical parameters, and the estimation of trace and toxic metals by AAS. The preparation of calibration curves for metal estimation is also described in this chapter. Chapter Three describes the estimation of bio-chemical parameters, trace and toxic metals in baby powder milk and baby cereals. Protein, lactose, acidity, trace and toxic metals were measured in baby foods for comparison to the standard values or the values given in the packet/container. Fourteen samples of baby (0−6 months and 6−24 months) powder milk and ten brands of baby (6−24 months) cereal were analyzed and the result have been discussed in this chapter. Protein found in baby (0−6 months) powder milk of seven brands was in the range of 15.54−18.50%. The amount of lactose and acidity was found to be 51.02 to 62.49% and 0.66 to 1.28% respectively. The content of protein in baby (6−24 months) powder milk was observed between 17.27 and 22.98%. The content of lactose and acidity were in the range of 50.87−58.69 and 1.07−1.20% respectively. The trace (Co and Zn) and toxic (Pb, Cd, Cr, As and Ni) metals in baby (0−6 months) powder milk of different brands were estimated and the values were as follows: Co, 0.02 to 0.04 mg/kg; Zn, 16.95 to 52.86 mg/kg; Pb, 0.12 to 0.42 mg/kg; Cd, 0.01 to 0.02 mg/kg; Cr, 0.03 to 0.16 mg/kg and As, 0.26 to 0.61 mg/kg. Ni in baby (0−6 months) powder milk was found below the detectable limit. The trace and toxic metals in the baby (6−24 months) powder milk was found to be in the range of 0.38−0.47 mg/kg, 5.40−42.00 mg/kg, 0.01−0.04 mg/kg, 3.58−4.67 mg/kg, 0.12−0.24 mg/kg and 0.65−9.20 mg/kg for Co, Zn, Cd, Cr, As and Ni respectively. The metal contents in the baby cereals were observed as follows: Co, 1.2−8.2 mg/kg; Zn, 28.2−659.0 mg/kg; Pb, 0.3−20.4 mg/kg; Cd, 0.04−0.59 mg/kg; Cr, 0.15−0.93 mg/kg; As, 0.58−1.68 mg/kg and Ni, 0.2−32.7 mg/ kg. The bio-chemical parameters of baby powder milks were found to be consistent with their expected values. The concentration of trace metals (Co and Zn) and toxic metals (Pb, Cd, Cr, As and Ni) in baby powder milks were either significantly lower than their tolerance limits, or below their detection limits. These milks can, therefore, be considered as fairly safe for infant health. But the higher concentration of toxic metals in some baby cereal shows alarming signal to their consumer and demands proper investigation of baby cereals after the import. However, the present investigation shows that the baby powder milk which are coming to the markets from abroad contain very negligible amount of harmful metals. Chapter Four deals with the estimation of bio-chemical parameters, trace, toxic and essential metals in jams, jellies and juices available in the market of Bangladesh. The contents of protein, moisture, total solid, reducing sugar and ash were measured in jams, jellies and juices for comparison to the standard values or values given in the packet/container. NazrulItem Effectiveness of Electronic Media for Sustainable Agricultural Development: An Investigation into TV Programmes(University of Rajshahi, 2015) Islam, Md. Nazrul; Rahman, Md. Mostafizur; Biswas, Dulal ChandraThe study was taken to assess the effectiveness of electronic media for sustainable agricultural development, to explore the relationship of 22 independent variables with the effectiveness of electronic media for sustainable agricultural development and to dig out the contribution of independent variables to the effectiveness of electronic media for sustainable agricultural development. Data were collected from 187farm family heads selected randomly from 1249 farm family heads of six villages of two different Union Parishad (UP) under two Upazila of Kurigram district. Primary data were collected from the farm family heads during January 2011 to June 2011 by a structured interview schedule. Selected 22 characteristics of farmers were considered as the independent variables and effectiveness of electronic media for sustainable agricultural development was the dependent variable. Variables were measured by appropriately fit measuring scale. Appropriate measuring scales were developed to measure the psychological variables also. Pearson’s Product Moment Correlation Co-efficient (r) was computed to examine the relationships between the concerned variables. The findings showed that almost three fourths (68.45 per cent) of the respondent farmers had the medium effectiveness, less than one fifths (17.65 per cent) had high effectiveness and only 13.90 per cent had low effectiveness to utilize the electronic media for sustainable agricultural development. The findings of correlation revealed that education, family education, training experience, mass media exposure, agricultural knowledge, knowledge about sustainable agriculture, annual income, formal group affiliation/organizational participation, cosmolpoliteness, peer relationship, innovativeness, attitude toward agriculture, attitude toward television had significant positive relationships with the effectiveness of electronic media for sustainable agricultural development, but age, family size, supervision of crop production, farm size, socio-economic status, ownership of agricultural implement, risk orientation and aspiration did not show significant relationship with the effectiveness of electronic media for sustainable agricultural development. Six variables entered into the stepwise multiple regression analysis and results showed that among these variables innovativeness alone contributed more than half (53.3 per cent) of the total variation in predicting the effectiveness of electronic media for sustainable agricultural development. Training, education, sustainable agricultural knowledge, peer group affiliation and agricultural knowledge has also considerable contribution. Path analysis revealed that innovativeness, training, education, sustainable agricultural knowledge, peer group affiliation and agricultural knowledge of the respondents had substantial direct and indirect effect on the effectiveness of electronic media for sustainable agricultural development and were channeled through each other. The problem in relation to effectiveness of electronic media for sustainable agricultural development “unsuitable broadcasting time for farmers”, “limited number of agricultural television programmes”, treatment of viewers towards television only as entertainment equipment”, “available number of channel” and “lack of mechanism to measure feedback” were ranked 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th respectively. The suggestions from the respondents “broadcasting agricultural programmes at suitable time for the farmers”, “increasing number of agricultural television programmes”, “emphasizing the sustainability of agriculture in television programmes”, “ establishing specialized television channel for agriculture” and “counting feedback beside repeated broadcasting of agricultural programmes” were ranked 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th an 5th respectively according to the farmer’s response for the effectiveness of electronic media for sustainable agricultural development. MostafaThe goal of the research is to examine the present irrigation practices in rice field and its sustainability to prevent water scarcity for future generation. The research objectives are intended to examine the irrigation policy, methods and manuals, present practices, adverse impacts on society and environment, measuring the ground water table, legal and ethical issues etc; in respect of the level of sustainability. Two villages of Sirajganj Sadar Upazilla under Sirajganj district and three villages of Godagari Upazila under Rajshahi district are selected as the study areas to collect required primary data for addressing the study objectives. Total number of samples is 180. After conducting a preliminary visit and observation researcher prepares a complete list of 340 numbers of households of the study villages from which 180 respondents are selected through simple randomization. Households of study villages are stratified into three groups in accordance of land ownership and amount of land cultivate for rice production in Kharif-1 season. Both qualitative and quantitative data have been used for the research work. Both the data come from primary and secondary sources are used for this research. Data from secondary sources has been collected through deskwork and content analysis. Primary Data has been collected through questionnaire survey, in-depth and in-formal Interview, focus group discussion, ground water table measurement and KAP model study. Socioeconomic situation of both the study areas is not so good because there are still landless farmers who cultivate land with share crop or taking lease from other farmers. Moreover, seasonal unemployment is one of main problems faced by small and marginal farmers that show the poverty features of the study areas. Laws and policies associated with irrigation are not properly implements by the government that needs to enforce immediately to conserve and sustainable use of water resources for future generation. In both the study areas, though there are some rivers, canals, small ponds and other water bodies but water is not found during irrigation in dry season. Farmers depend on groundwater for irrigation though some land stands beside the river or canal. Most of the farmers prefer cultivation of rice though they state that it does not increase income and is not profitable but rice fulfills food requirements. Excessive irrigation has adverse impacts on other crops, environment, human health, and fresh water fishes etc. Surface water bodies dry up due to excessive groundwater harvesting. Chemical fertilizer and pesticides pollute local water bodies along with irrigation water decreasing fishes and aquatic animals and due to excessive groundwater extracting for irrigation the water soluble metals like iron, arsenic, lead, cadmium etc., found in tube wells’ water are harmful for the humans as well as other animals. People have not much knowledge about water use from traditional and religious point of view but they agree that by following traditional and religious beliefs irrigation water misuse can be minimized. Economic sustainability is seen quite balanced in the study areas. Social sustainability is not well enough because there is safe drinking water scarcity in dry season. People state that groundwater level is decreasing day by day. Data of static groundwater level collected from both the study areas shows that day by day and every year gradually groundwater level is decreasing disturbingly, which is not good sign for future availability of groundwater resources. 24 years data of groundwater table collected from Barind Multipurpose Development Authority of Godagari Upazila shows that decreasing level of groundwater is around 36 to 46 feet. Therefore, it can be assumed that environmental sustainability is in danger at present. Government should take immediate steps for conserving water resources. An in-depth investigation is required further to measure the level of sustainability of present irrigation practice in rice cultivation.
