    AGROFORESTRY STATUS AND ITS IMPACT ON LIVELIHOOD OF CHAR LAND FARMERS IN NILPHAMARI DISTRICT

    The present study was conducted among the char land area of two Upazila namely Jaldhaka and Dimla of Nilphamari district of Bangladesh to find the agroforestry status and its impact on the livelihood of charland farmers. A total sample of 100 (50 from each Upazila) farmers were selected randomly for data collection. Data were analyzed with a combination of descriptive statistics, mathematical and statistical techniques. Majority of the respondent family (56 %) were in the age category of middle aged (years) which are considered as the most active and working group. Most of the respondents can sign only category of education level (53 %) in the study areas. Majority of them have (62 %) were medium knowledge with mean score 22.8 with a standard deviation of 10.59 of the knowledge of agroforestry. Better part of the respondents were found to consume fruit and rest of them engaged in fruit distribution and sale. More than 53 % of these charland farmers had sign only educational level; therefore they have not enough knowledge about the benefit of medicinal plants of homestead agroforestry. The highest percentage of respondents assigned/involved in various management practices i.e. seed collection, watering, weed control, maturing, fertilization, pruning and insecticide spray in the study area. The extension workers in the charland did not have enough facilities to communicate (information from UAO AEO, SAAO, NGOs, GD, participation in field day, TV, Radio and newspaper, leaflet, bulletin) for the development of homestead agroforestry. Among the respondents, 95% (highest) and 6% (lowest) were mango and tamarindus tree farmer respectively. The highest (39%) of respondents was found eucalyptus with ranked 1 and lowest (4%) of respondents was found east African mehogony and banyan tree and then the ranked (11) were same. Results shows that the highest (68%) of respondent family were lal shak and ranked 1 and lowest (10%) of respondents was cultivated cucumber, ridge gourd and cauliflower vegetable at home and then the ranked (18) were same species diversity in homestead agroforestry. Most of the respondents faced problems damaged by animals such as cattle, goat, etc. (36 %), not faced any problems (8 %). This problem was hindrance to improve the homestead agroforestry. Need proper homestead agroforestry knowledge about planting trees, the extension workers and also the members of NGOs can play a crucial role to overcome this problem. The respondents faced different problems that were created looser financially in the homestead agroforestry. The relationship between tree knowledge of respondent family and their knowledge of agroforestry status was 0.814**. Based on the computed ‘r’ value the relationship between tree knowledge of respondent and knowledge of agroforestry was significant at 0.01 level of significance and followed a positive relationship. The good quality seeds/ seedlings, fertilizer and plant protection should be available. Seed collection was very important component of agriculture and all of the respondents' economy was agrobased. The homestead owner should be trained by the GOs or NGOs about homestead agroforestry knowledge. Providing suggestion by extension workers, training and loan to execute GOs and NGOs of their char land farmer homestead agroforestry knowledge.

    ASSESSMENT OF HEAVY METAL CONTAMINATION OF THE SOIL IN MUNICIPAL OPEN-AIR DUMPSITES OF DHAKA CITY AND ITS OUTSKIRTS

    Disposal of the household originated and industrial hazardous materials with municipal solid waste (MSW) into the open dumping sites is the usual practice in Bangladesh. This experiment was carried out from July to December 2019 to assess the heavy metal contamination of the soil collected from the municipal open-air dumpsites of Dhaka city and its outskirts. The samples were collected from four dumpsites as Aminbazar and Matuail dumpsites of Dhaka; Konabari dumpsite of Gazipur and Shiddhirganj dumpsite of Narayanganj to analyze the soil characteristics (soil texture, pH, organic content) with heavy metals content (Cd, Pb, Ni and Cr). Samples were collected by auger sampling method from three soil depth (10-15 cm, 15-30 cm and 30-45 cm) directly from the dumpsite soil (DSS) and non-dumpsite soil (NDSS) with a duration of thirty days (December, 2019). It was observed that soil sample from all the sites was loamy type, pH was almost neutral and contained low amount of organic matter. The results of the analysis showed that the metals content dumpsite soil (DSS) were (Cd: 0.23 – 0.98 mgkg -1 ; Pb: 13.2 – 39.7 mgkg -1 ; Ni: 6.87 – 29.31 mgkg -1 and Cr: 14.32 – 43.49 mgkg -1 ) from all three depth of soil from all areas was higher than the content of non-dumpsite soil (NDSS) (Cd: 0.21 – 0.48 mgkg -1 ; Pb: 4.5 – 18.1 mgkg ; Ni: 4.23 – 18.65 mgkg -1 and Cr: 2.45 – 28.56 mgkg -1 ). All the sample contained heavy metal concentration not exceeding the permissible limits. Cadmium was richer in Aminbazar, Dhaka but other three metals, lead, nickel and chromium was richest in Shiddhirganj, Narayanganj. There was negligible correlation between all the heavy metals and pH and strongly negative correlation between heavy metals and soil depth. The outcome of this study gives the idea of heavy metals content in dumpsite soil (DSS) samples comparing the non-dumpsite soil (NDSS) samples and indicates the necessity of solid waste stabilization for heavy metal immobilization within the solidified matrix bond and re-use of solidified/stabilized products for sustainable solid waste management.

    CHARACTERIZATION OF STAPHYLOCOCCUS SP ISOLATED FROM ARTHRITIC BROILER BREEDER FLOCK WITH ANTIBIOGRAM STUDY OF IDENTIFIED FIELD ISOLATES

    The study was conducted for characterization of Staphylococcus sp isolated from arthritic broiler breeder flock with antibiogram study of identified field isolates. The study was performed in a breeder flock. The flock consists of 7000 birds of different age groups, name of the breed cobb 500 selected for the study. The sample were collected from the affected birds and shifted aseptically to the Bacteriology laboratory of the department of Microbiology Hajee Mohammed Danesh Science and Technology University. The samples were subjected to clinical, postmortem and microbiological (morphological, cultural and biochemical) examination. The study shows that infection is very high in starter and grower (58.2%) than laying period (16.6%). The staphylococcus sp highly sensitive to different antimicrobial agents such as 100% sensitive to ciprofloxacin, doxycycline, penicillin, gentamicin and 70% sensitive nitrofurantoin 60% azithromicin and resistance to cephradine, ampicillin, amoxicillin sulfomithoxazole X Trimethoprim.

    EVALUATION OF DIFFERENT VARIETIES OF MUNGBEAN AGAINST INSECT PEST COMPLEX

    A studies were conducted with seven mungbcan varieties viz. BARE Mug-2, BARI Mug-3, BARI Mug-4, BARI Mug-5, BARI Mug-6, BINA Mug-2 and BINA Mug5 on the incidence of insect pests during the Kharif-1 season (09 April, 2006 to 30 June, 2006). Whitefly (/Jwntvia 'a/w.jci (ienn.), jassid (Empocisca kern), bean stemfly (Opluomyia pha.veoli Tryon), semilooper (Dniclzrysia orociza/cea), pod borer (/:uchrywps c)?e/,t F.) and niungbean yellow mosaic virus (MYMV) were identified as pests in all tested varieties. Positive colTelation was observed between whitefly (Bemisia icthaci Genn.) population (adult and nymph) and environmental factors such as temperatwe and relative humidity. A linear relationship (R2 = o.7673 ) was observed between MYM\' and adult whitefly population, thus znungbean yellow mosaic virus (MYMV) infection was positively correlated with the whitcily population (adult and nymph) while, BARI Mug-6 and BARI Mug-5 was the least preferred varieties to whitefly and thus they showed the lowest MYMV infection, BARI Mug-6 and BARI Mug-5 was also the tolerance tojassid and stemfly. While BINA Mug-5, BARI Mug-6 and I3ARI Mug-4 was the most tolerance to pod borer and semilooper, therefore in general. BARI Mug-4, BINA Mug-5 and BARI Mug-6 were least susceptible to pest complex and 13ARI Mug-6 and BARI Mug-5 appeared to be the best varieties in terms of resistance and yield.

    GENETIC DIVERSITY ANALYSIS OF RED AMARANTH (Amaranthus cruentus L.)

    A field experiment was conducted with 20 genotypes of red amaranth (Amaranthus cruentus L.) at the experimental field of Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka to study the Genetic Diversity Analysis of Red Amaranth from November to December 2020. The genotypes were found significantly different for all the characters studied. Comparatively phenotypic coefficient of variation was higher than the genotypic coefficient of variation for all the traits. Experiment showed significant differences among the genotypes. Phenotypic variance was higher than that of genotypic variance for all the characters. High genotypic co-efficient of variation (GCV) was found for plant height and average leaf area plant xi -1 . High heritability with high genetic advance in percent of mean was observed in plant height, average stem diameter plant -1 and yield plant -1 (fresh weight) which indicated that these traits would be effective for genetic improvement. Correlation studies showed that positive and significant correlation of yield plant -1 (fresh weight) with number of leaves plant , average leaf length plant -1 , average leaf area plant -1 and average stem diameter plant . Path co-efficient analysis revealed that number of leaves plant -1 , average leaf area plant -1 and average stem diameter plant -1 had the positive direct effect on yield plant (fresh weight) whereas, plant height and average leaf length plant -1 had the negative direct effect on yield plant -1 (fresh weight). Diversity was estimated by cluster distance and the genotypes were grouped into five clusters. The highest inter-cluster distance was observed between clusters II and IV and the maximum intra-cluster distance was found in cluster II and the lowest inter-cluster distance was observed between clusters I and II and the minimum intra-cluster distance was found in cluster IV. Considering group distance and other agronomic performance, genotypes BD7406 and BD-2964 in cluster IV and genotypes BD-2946 and BD-2934 in cluster III could be considered as suitable genotypes for efficient hybridization in future.

    NITROGEN, WEED AND IRRIGATION MANAGEMENT FOR MAXIMIZING GROWTH AND YIELD OF BORO RICE (cv. BRRI dhan29)

    Two consecutive field experiments were conducted at the Suapur Union of Dhamrai Upazila, Dhaka. The experimental field is located at 23 88´N latitude and 90 0 14´E longitude and AEZ-12, during the period of 2014-2015 and 20152016 to find out nitrogen, weed and irrigation management for maximizing growth and yield of boro rice (cv.BRRI dhan29). The experiment comprised three factors; Factor A: Nitrogen management (4 levels), N : No urea (control), N 1 : Urea super granules-USG (77 kg N ha -1 ), N 2 0 : Prilled urea at recommended dose (150 kg N ha -1 ) and N 3 : ½ of the recommended dose (75 kg N ha ); Factor B: Weed management (4 levels), W 0 : No weeding (control), W : Two hand weeding (20 and 40 DAT), W 2 0 1 : Pre emergence herbicide (Butachor) and W : Post emergence herbicide (Prityloclor); Factor C: Irrigation management (4 levels), I 1 : Irrigating all time, I 2 : Irrigating 3 days after drying, I : Irrigating 5 days after drying, I : Alternate wetting and drying (AWD) method. The experiments were laid out in split-split-plot designs with three replications. Data on different growth characters, yield components and yield of BRRI dhan29 were recorded. Statistically significant variation was observed for different nitrogen, weed and irrigation management and also for their combined effect. For nitrogen management, on an average of two consecutive years, the highest grain yield (6.01 t ha 4 -1 ) was recorded from N 1 3 , while the lowest (4.35 t ha ) from N 0 . In weed management, the highest grain yield (5.92 t ha -1 ) was recorded from W 2 , while the lowest (4.49 t ha -1 ) from W . In case of irrigation management, the highest grain yield (5.88 t ha -1 0 ) was found from I 4 -1 , while the lowest (4.70 t ha ) from I 1 . For the combined effect of different nitrogen and weed management, the -1 3 -1 highest grain yield (6.80 t ha -1 ) was recorded from N iii 1 W , whereas the lowest (3.85 t ha -1 ) from N 0 W 0 2 . Due to the combined effect of different nitrogen and irrigation management, the highest grain yield (6.36 t ha -1 ) was recorded from N 1 I 4 , whereas the lowest (3.80 t ha -1 ) from N 0 I . In case of combined effect of different weed and irrigation management based on pooled data, the highest grain yield (6.52 t ha -1 ) was recorded from W 2 I 4 1 , whereas the lowest (3.85 t ha ) from W 0 I . Due to the combined effect of different nitrogen, weed and irrigation management, on polled basis the highest grain yield (6.99 t ha 1 -1 ) was recorded from N 1 W 2 I 4 , while the lowest yield (3.18 t ha -1 ) from N 0 W 0 I . The treatments having significantly high grain yields over others were N 1 1 W 1 I ), N 1 W 2 I 4 (6.99 t ha -1 ), N 1 W 3 I 4 (6.90 t ha -1 ), N 2 W 2 I 4 (6.70 t ha -1 ),N 2 4 (6.61 t ha W ), N 3 W 2 I 4 (6.54 t ha -1 ) and N 3 W 3 I 4 (6.61 t ha -1 ), which were identical among themselves.

    PERFORMANCE OF DIFFERENT HYBRID VARIETIES OF TOMATO (Lycopersicon esculentum L)

    Performance of six different hybrid tomatoes (Lycopersicon esulentum ) namely BARI hybrid-4, Mintoo super, Delta, Mintoo, Unnayan and Tripti-2 with two check variety Ratan and Roma Vf (Popularly grown at chirirbandar, Dinajpur) were conducted in the Genetics and Plant Breeding research field, Hajee Mohammad Danesh Science and Technology University, Dinajpur, Bangladesh during November 2011 to April 2012. Ten characters were studied namely days to 50% flowering, plant height, fruit diameter, fruit length, individual fruit weight, canopy width, marketable fruits/plant, shelf life, thousand (1000) seed weight, yield/plant. A remarkable variation in plant characters and yield performance was noticed among the hybrids. The magnitudes of phenotypic co-efficient of variation were higher than corresponding genetic co-efficient of variation. Mintoo super was the highest yielding hybrid possessed highest individual fruit weight and plant height and second highest fruit diameter. The second highest yielding hybrid Delta possessed second highest fruit weight and plant height. It also produced moderate shelf life but longest days required for 50% flowering. The third highest yielding hybrid was BARI hybrid-4, which had highest number of marketable fruits per plant and better fruit weight, which contributed mainly to yield, compared to other hybrids and the check varieties. Yield of Mintoo super, Delta, BARI hybrid-4 is higher than the check varieties Ratan and Roma vf but only the hybrid variety Delta has higher shelf life with less variable fruit characters than two check varieties.

    QUALITY OF NURSERY OWNERS ON NURSERY BUSINESS (A CASE STUDY IN DHAKA DISTRICT)

    The survey was carried out in Dhaka district and covered 50 nurseries from the region. The main purpose of the study was to find out quality of nursery owners on nursery business. Data were collected by using interview schedule during June to October 2006. There were two types of factors. The nursery owners factor of this study were age, education, family size, occupation, gender participation, training and knowledge on nursery. The nursery factors of this study were nursery size, number of species, communication exposures, problem of nursery and annual income. Among the nursery owner the age categories were young, middle and old age. Forty six (46) percent of them were middle aged and their nursery size 47.59, number of species 45.32, communication exposures 47.72, problem of nursery 18.14 and annual income was 48.14 percent. The education categories were primary, secondary higher and graduate level. Data showed that 74 percent were primary level and their nursery size 74.45, number of species 70.12 communication exposures 67.30, problem 65.54 and annual income was 67.64 percent. The family size categories were small, medium and large family. Data revealed that 60 percent were medium family and their nursery size 67.96, number of species 59.24, communication exposures 63.31, problem 21.36 and annual income was 50.98 percent. The occupation categories were main, secondary and tertiary. It was observed that 44 percent were main occupation and their nursery size 52.06, number of species 45.55, communication exposures 49.21, problem 17.23 and annual income was 40.88 percent. The gender participation categories were male, female and both. Data analyzed that 56 percent were male and their nursery size 61.57, number of species 60.41, communication exposures 58.51, problem 13.40 and annual income was 47.22 percent. The training categories were low, medium and high. Data showed that 18 percent were high training and their nursery size 32.62, number of species 52.26, communication exposures 55.29, problem 12.96 and annual income was 61.97 percent. The knowledge categories were low, medium and high. Data revealed that 46 percent of high knowledge owners nursery size were 44.20, number of species 49.56, communication exposures 54.82, problem 12.12 and annual income 50.43 percent. From analysis it was found that middle age, primary level, medium family, main occupation, male, high training and high knowledge factors were better than other categories.
