    BIOASSAY OF DIFFERENT EXTRACT OF Clerodendrum infortunatum ON SOME VEGETABLE SEEDS WITH THEIR CHEMICAL INVESTIGATION

    An experiment was conducted on bioassay of different extracts of leaves of Clerodendrum infortunatum for each vegetable crop such as, kolmishak, bhendi, and borboti with the attempt for chemical investigation on effective plant extract. The chloroform extract of C. infortunatum significantly increased and enhanced germination, growth of shoot length and root length of yard long bean and swamp cabbage seeds compared with control. But germination, growth of shoot length and root length of lady’s finger is increased and enhanced by control treatment. The chloroform extract of C. infortunatum showed the highest germination at 7 days after sowing for these vegetable crops. Increased and enhanced but the lowest germination percentage (12.00%) was in T; at 2 DAS in swamp cabbage. Highest germination percentage was in T2 at 7 DAS for long yard bean, swamp cabbage, lady’s finger whereas lowest germination percentage was in T, at 2 DAS in those vegetables. Shoot length of swamp cabbage at different days after sowing influenced significantly by the effects of different extract. At 11 Days after sowing (DAS) with the leaf extract of C. infortunatum showed the highest shoot length 5.867 cm while the lowest shoot length (0.9267 cm) was recorded in control. Root length of swamp cabbage seedling at different days after sowing was lowest at 5 DAS and showed an increasing trend up to 11 DAS. Incase of lady’s finger the germination percentage was highest found in T, At 5 DAS highest germination found in T, (36.00). Shoot length of ladies finger at different days after sowing influenced significantly by the effects of different leaf extract but highest result found on control. Root length of lady’s finger seedling at different days after sowing was enhanced by control treatment. TLC of chloroform extracts of C. infortunatum at hexane indicated that it contains five compounds. Separation of individual components and their structure determination by spectral study in progress which will be reported in due course.

    CHARACTERIZATION AND DIVERSITY ANALYSIS OF TOMATO (Solanurn lycopersicuni L.)

    A field experiment was conducted at the experimental field of Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka. during October 2011 to April 2012. Thirty genotypes of tomato (So/anton lycopersicum L.) were studied in the present study. The objectives of the study were characterization and diversity analysis of tomato to assess the magnitude of genetic divergence in genotypes, association among the characters and their contribution to yield. The analysis of variance indicated significantly higher amount of variability among the genotypes for all the characters. Considering genetic parameters high genotypic coefficient of variation (GCV) was observed for number of fruits per cluster (44.55), fruit weight (59.12) and fruit yield per plant (40.52) where as days to first flowering (0.75) and days to 50% flowering (2.48) showed low GCV. in all cases, phenotypic variances were higher than the genotypic variance. High heritability with low genetic advance in percent of mean was observed for days to first flowering (DFF), days to 50% flowering . plant height (PH), number of branches per plant (BPP), number of cluster per plant (NCP), number of fruits per plant (FPP), fruit length (FL) and fruit yield per plant (FYP) which indicated that non-additive gene effects were involved for the expression of these characters and selection for such traits might not be rewarding. High heritability with high genetic advance in percent of mean were observed for number of fruits per cluster (FPC) and fruit weight (EW) indicating that there traits were under additive gene action and selection for genetic improvement for this trait would be effective. The results showed that fruit yield per plant had high positive and high significant relation with fruit weight and fruit length but high negative and significant relation with days to first flowering (l)FF) and number of clusters per plant (NCP). Days to first flowering (DFF). Days to 50% flowering. number of fruits per plant (FPP). fruit weight (FW) and fruit length (FL) had high positively direct effect on yield of tomato. So, these are found the important characters and could be used on direct selection for yield. Considering all the characters; 02 (1313-7260), 04 (80-7270). G (BD-7276). G6 (1313-7278). G15 (1313-7295), 022 (BO- 7762). G (BARI Tornato-3), G25 (BARI Tomato-). G (BARI Tomato-7), ("27 (EARl Tomato-9), 029 (BARI Tomato-14), and G (PUSA Rubi) can be selected for future breeding program.

    EFFECT OF NITROGEN AND PHOSPHORUS ON THE GROWTH AND SEED YIELD OF SPINACH

    The experiment was conducted at the Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka, Bangladesh during November, 2016 to March, 2017 to study the effect of nitrogen and phosphorus on the growth and seed yield of spinach. The experiment consisted of two factors. Factor A: Nitrogen management 4 levels; N 0 = 0 kg/ha N 1 = 27.6 kg/ha, N 2 =55.2 kg/ha, N 3 = 82.8 kg/ha, and factor B: Phophorus management 4 levels; P 0 = 0 kg/ha - ); P 1 = 15.84 kg/ha, P 2 = 31.68 kg/ha, P 3 = 47.52 kg/ha. There were 16 treatment combinations. RCBD design was followed with three replications in this experiment. The local variety was used in this experiment as the test crop. Nitrogen and phosphorus were applied as per treatment variables and other fertilizer were applied as per BARI recommendation. Data on different yield contributing characters and seed yield were recorded to find out the optimum levels of nitrogen and phosphorus for higher yield of spinach. The result indicated significant variations in all the parameters studied due to the effect of Nitogen and Phosphorus. It was also evident that, N 3 (82.8 kg/ha) treatment influenced significantly on the morphological characters, whereas N 2 (55.2 kg/ha) treatment influenced yield contributing characters, yield and seed quality of spinach. On the other hand P 3 (P 47.52 kg/ha) treatment influenced significantly on the morphological characters, whereas P 2 (31.68 kg/ha) influenced the seed yield contributing characters and seed quality of spinach. Among the treatment combinations N 2 P 2 (N 55.2 kg/ha + P 31.68 kg/ha) seemed to be more suitable for getting higher seed yield of spinach. The highest BCR (1.59) was found in the treatment of N 2 P 2 , and the second highest BCR found in N 2 P 3 (1.4) whereas the lowest BCR (1.01) was found N 0 . P 0

    GENETIC VARIABILITY, CORRELATION AND PATH CO-EFFICIENT ANALYSIS OF SOME YIELD AND YIELD CONTRIBUTING CHARACTERS IN BITTER GOURD (Momordica charantia L.)

    Twenty genotypes of bluer gourd (Momordica charantia L.) were studied in a field experiment conducted at the experimental field of Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University. Dhaka, during April 2008 to September 2008. The objectives of the study were to measure the variability among the genotypes for yield and yield contributing characters, estimate genetic parameters, association among the characters and their contribution to yield. There was a great deal of significant variation for all the characters among the genotypes. Considering genetic parameters high genotypic co-efficient of variation (CCV) was observed for branches per vine, yield per plant and number of fruit per plant whereas low genotypic co-efficient of variation (CCV) was observed days to first male and female flowering. In all cases, phenotypic variances were higher than the genotypic variance. Differences between genotypic and phenotypic coefficients revealed that the major portion of the phenotypic variance was genetic in nature. High heritability with low genetic advance in percent of mean was observed in days to first female flowering which indicated that nonadditive gene effects were involved for the expression of this character and selection for such trait might not be rewarding. High heritability with high genetic advance in percent of mean was observed for yield per plant and vine length indicated that this trait was under additive gene control and selection for genetic improvement for this trait would be effective. The results obtained, showed that yield per plant had high positive and high significant relation with number of nodes per vine. Correlation studies revealed that highest significant association of yield per plant with fruit diameter and number of fruit per plant at genotypic level. Path co-efficient analysis revealed maximum direct contribution towards yield per plant with maximum number of fruit per plant followed by vine length. Considering all the characters the G1 (Shaparan), 05 (Rampali gaj), 09 (Nabil), 012 (Nandita) 014 (Eureca), G16 (ha) and G19 (Maharaj) were selected for future breeding programme.

    GROWTH AND YIELD OF WHITE MAIZE VARIETIES UNDER VARYING FERTILIZER DOSES

    An experiment was conducted at the experimental field of Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka during the period from November, 2015 to April, 2016 to study the growth and yield of white maize varieties under fertilizer doses. The experiment consisted of two factors. Factor A: Fertilizer doses = Recommended dose 2 = Below 25% of recommended dose = Below 50% of recommended dose = above 25% of recommended dose 5 4 = above 50% of recommended dose 1 : KS-510 and V : PSC-121. The experiment was laid out in a split-plot design with three replications where doses of fertilizers were assigned in the main plot and varieties in the sub-plot. Results showed that plant height of both the varieties at maturity 2 had significantly higher leaf area 2 1 showed the highest biological yield -1 1 V 1 , F 4 V 1 , F 5 V 1 , F 1 V 2 and F 5 V 2 -1 .     INFLUENCE OF POTASSIUM AND SULFUR ON GROWTH AND YIELD OF POTATO DERIVED FROM TPS SEEDLING TUBER

    The experiment was carried out at the research field of Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka, during the period from 10 November 2010 to 10 March 2011 to investigate the effect of potassium and sulfur on morpho-physiological characters, yield attributes and yield of potato. The experiment comprised of four different doses of potassium (0, 117, 130, 43 kg ha -1 ) along with sulfur (0, 24, 29 and 34 kg ha ). The experiment was laid out in split plot design with three replications. The growth parameters such as plant height, stems hill -1 , leaves hill -1 -1 , total dry mass (TDM) plant and TDM m -2 , yield attributes such as tubers hill -1 and single tuber weight and tuber yield and marketable yield were significantly influenced by potassium and sulfur. Results revealed that, number of leaves hill -1 , stems hill -1 , plant dry matter content, tuber dry matter content, tubers m -2 , seed yield, marketable yield significantly increased with increasing potassium levels, whereas, plant height decreased with increasing potassium level. On the other hand plant dry matter content, tuber dry matter content, stems hill , tubers m -2 , seed yield, marketable yield increased significantly with increasing sulfur level. While plant height, number of leaves hill -1 and tubers m -2 decreased with increasing sulfur level. Combined effect of potassium and sulfur reveled taht the highest number of tubers m -2 was achieved by 130 kg potassium ha -1 with 34 kg sulfur ha . But 130 kg potassium ha -1 with 29 kg sulfur ha -1 produced more 45-55 mm sized tuber than 130 kg potassium ha -1 with 34 kg sulfur ha -1 . Application of 130 kg potassium ha with 34 kg sulfur ha -1 produces more <28 mm sized tuber than that of 130 kg potassium ha with 34 kg sulfur ha -1 . Finally 130 kg potassium ha -1 with 29 kg sulfur ha -1 produced numerically highest yield but statistically similar with 130 kg potassium ha -1 -1 -1 -1 with 34 kg sulfur ha -1 . -1 -1

    PERFORMANCE OF WHEAT (Triticum aestivuin) UNDER DIFFERENT MULTIPURPOSE TREES AS AGROFORESTRY SYSTEM

    A field experiment was carried out at the agroforestry research field, Hajee Mohammad Danesh Science and Technology University (HSTU), Dinajpur, during November 2012 to March 2013 to evaluate the performance of wheat under 3 multipurpose tree species in Agroforestry system. The experiment was laid out following a single factor Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with 3 replications. The unit plot size was 2.5 mx2.5 m (6.25 m’). The treatments were as T,; = Wheat sole cropping (Control), T, = Wheat + Kalo koroi based Agroforestry, T; = Wheat + Mango based Agroforestry and Ty = Wheat + Guava based Agroforestry. The results of the research showed that the effect of different production system had significant response in growth parameter in respect of plant height, stem height, number of leaves, leaf length and breadth, total tiller leaf dry weight and stem dry weight at 30, 60 and 90 DAS. At 30 days after sowing (DAS) significantly the highest plant height (12.65 cm) was found in wheat + Guva based agroforestry system and the lowest plant height (12.40 crn) was recorded in T, i.e. wheat production in sole cropping system. At 90 DAS the highest plant height (97.58 cm) was observed in T, (wheat + Guava based production system) while the lowest plant height (90.23) was found in wheat production in sole cropping. Significantly the highest grain yield (2.93 t/ha) was recorded in T; (wheat sole cropping production system) and the lowest grain yield (2.04 t/ha) was found in Ty (wheat + Guava based agroforestry system), respectively. From the results it is clear that open field is very good for wheat production but among the Agroforestry systems Kalo koroi based Agroforestry system was the best for wheat cultivation.

    PROBLEMS FACED BY THE FARMERS IN SUGARCANE CULTIVATION

    The purpose of the study was to find out the extent of problems faced by the farmers in sugarcane cultivation and to expJore the relationships of the farmers' selected characteristics with their problems faced in sugarcane cultivation. The study was conducted in 9 selected villages under Pabna Sadar UpaziJla. Data were collected from a proportionately random sample of 100 sugarcane farmers by using an interview schedule during I 0 September, 2007 to 11 November, 2007. The majority (68 percent) of the farmers faced moderate problem in sugarcane cultivation, while 8 percent low and 24 percent serious problem in sugarcane cultivation. Correlation analysis indicated that among 13 selected characteristics of the farmers, 6 namely, education, credit availability, input availability, extension media contact, training exposure and knowledge had significant negative relationship with their problem faced in sugarcane cultivation and the rest 7 characteristics namely, age, family size, land possession, annual family income, sugarcane cultivation area, organizational participation and innovativeness had no significant relationship with their problem faced in sugarcane cultivation. On the basis of Problem Faced Index, it was observed that "high price of fertilizer and pesticide", "Non-availability of fertilizer and pesticide in time" and "insect and pest attack of sugarcane" were the major three problems in sugarcane cultivation.

    PRODUCTION AND MANAGEMENT OF SPOTTED DEER AT NATIONAL ZOO IN BANGLADESH

    The production and reproduction profile, feeds and feeding and herd management of spotted deer studied in captive condition at Bangladesh National Zoo in this experiment. For these purposes, fifteen (15) deer’s from each group i.e. adult male (Stag or buck), adult female (Doe), juvenile and infant were used during January 15 th to December 15 th 2018 for a period of one year. Available feeds that were supplied to the spotted deer such as maize fodder, Jambu grass and Gourd Spinach (Kolmi grass), cabbages, Cucumber, gourd, Pumpkin, grain, wheat bran and soybean meal. Amount of CP and metabolic energy was 13.63% and 14.38 MJ ME per day respectively. From the study it was observed that average males and females birth weights were 2.97 and 2.73 kg, adult males and females weights 78.08 and 60.97 kg, males and females weaning weights were 19.05 and 18.49 kg respectively. It was also observed that average weaning age was 5.19 months, length of estrous was 17. 40 days, age at first fawning was 14.48 months and gestation lengths were 232.69 days respectively. Instead of this it may be “It is concluded that recommended rations needs to be fed with proper management systems to keep balanced nutritive conditions along with productive and reproductive well being of the spotted deer at Bangladesh National Zoo.

    SELECTION INDEX FOR GENETIC IMPROVEMENT IN WHEAT (Triticum aestivum L.)

    An experiment was conducted at the research field of the Department of Genetics and Plant Breeding with twenty four wheat genotypes collected from Wheat Research Centre, BARI, Dinajpur. The wheat genotypes were evaluated in randomized completely blocked design with three replications to study genotypic and phenotypic co-efficient of variation, heritability, genetic advance and selection index for genetic improvement of the selected wheat genotypes. The study results revealed that moderate heritability coupled with moderate genetic advance in thousand grain weight (g), number of grain per spike, plant height (cm) and days to heading. Among characters thousand grain weight had high genotypic and phenotypic co-efficient of variation over other characters. Yield per plant alone considered 100%, expected genetic grain and relative efficiency of other functions were calculated accordingly. Yield per plot (g) with thousand grain weight (g), number of grain per spike, number of spikelet per spike, days to anthesis, number of heading per days, and plant height (cm) association would be more efficient for improvement due to the maximum expected genetic gain (425.97) with maximum relative efficiency (122.75%) as found in selection index. But considering economic viability and practical condition, selection indices for the improvement of yield, the five character association i.e. yield per plot, thousand grain weight, number of grain per spike, number of spikelet per spike and days to anthesis per days is better than others is suggested. Comparison among relative selection criteria of all the characters of the studied wheat genotypes based on the best selection index yield per plot, thousand grain weight, number of grain per spike, number of spikelet per spike and days to anthesis (five character association), with total rank value besed on selection criteria the genotype PYT-15 is the promising genotype for genetic improvement.

    SOCIO-ECONOMIC CONDITION OF VEGETABLE STREET VENDORS : A STUDY ON DHAKA CITY

    The study focuses on the socio-economic condition of vegetable Street vendors in Dhaka. Special emphasis has been given on reasons of entering women vegetable vendors into vending job and their problem. For this purpose, a survey was conducted in 2018 to know the socio-economic condition of vegetable street vendors in Dhaka. This survey covered 150 vendors in those streets, footpath and roadside of 5 specific areas as Mirpur, Mohammadpur, Farmgate, Dhanmondi and Azimpur in Dhaka. Based on this study has found that the socio-economic condition of street vendors is very poor. Their income and saving is very low. Both they and their children’s education is very poor. Vegetable street vendor is one of the better informal job opportunities for poor. The study explores that 88.67 percent vegetable vendors are male and 11.34 percent of them are female. 42 percent of them have age range 26-35 years old. Among them 74 percent got married. 52 percent of them maintaining a family member at least 6 or above. Almost 65.34 percent vendor’s academic qualification is below SSC. More than 24 percent of them and 12 percent of their children are illiterate yet. The per day average sale is Tk. 2475. The average monthly income of per vendor is Tk. 23435. Almost 61.34 percent had started with an initial investment lowest Tk.10000. 50.67 percent of them could earn profit per day lowest through Tk. 400. If a comparison is made between male and female, we see that the condition of women vendors is more vulnerable than male venders. Women vendors in Dhaka choose this trade because of poverty and also because the male members in the family do not have jobs and even if they earn money, they spend those money mostly on liquor. Their low income, double burden of having to work on the streets and look after the home and low level of unionization make them the invisible section of street vendors. Less or no Public toilet in the streets of Dhaka has an adverse effect on women vender’s health and many suffer from various infection. The mobile women street vendors also face security issues.
