    ASSESSMENT OF As, Pb AND Cd IN SOILS AND VECETABLES COLLECTED FROM 5 DIFFERENT LOCATIONS OF CHANDPUR DISTRICT

    An experiment was designed to assess the concentration of Arsenic (As). Lead (Ph) and Cadmium (Cd) in soils and 12 different vegetable species (Cabbage, Radish, Tomato, Sponge gourd, Spinach. Brinjal, Red amaranth. Data shak, Potato, Onion, Garlic, Bottle gourd) collected from five different locations (Karaia, Charbhairabi, Gazra, Tamta and Faridganj unions) of Chandpur district. Forty soil and sixty vegetable samples were collected during Rabi season. Concentrations of As, Pb and Cd in soils were 8.80. 16.24 and 0.53 pg g, respectively. As, Pb and Cd concentrations of soils were within the set value for maximum acceptable concentration (20. 100 and 5 pg g', respectively) for satisfactory crop production. Concentrations of heavy metals were higher in leafS' vegetables compared to fruits and root and tuber type vegetables. The mean concentrations of As. Pb and Cd in vegetables ranged between 0.31-0.81, 0.08-0.59, 0.12-0.34 pg respectively. Highest concentration of Pb (0.59 pg g') was found in both cabbage and radish while the highest concentrations of As (0.81 pg g") was recorded with cabbage. Highest concentration of Cd (0.34 pg gd) was observed in both sponge gourd and red amaranth. However, the highest concentration of As in vegetables under the study was within the safe limit (2.6 pg g') whereas Pb and Cd were found above the safe limit (0.3 and 0.2 pg g', respectively) for human consumption.

    COMMERCIALIZATION OF BETEL LEAF CULTIVATION BY THE FARMERS OF WAZIRPUR UPAZILA UNDER BARISHAL DISTRICT

    ABSTRACT Betel leaf cultivation may helps the farmer with regard to farm income and medicinal value. In this context, the objectives of the study was to determine the extent of commercialization of betel leaf cultivation by the farmers and to explore the contribution of the selected characteristics of the betel leaf farmers to their commercialization of betel leaf cultivation. The study was conducted in the Wazirpur upazila under Barishal district. One hundred and two (102) betel leaf growers were selected randomly from a total of 746 growers of four villages of Wazirpur upazila under the Barishal district. A structured interview schedule was developed based on objectives of the study for collecting the data. The researcher himself collected data through personal contact. Commercialization of betel leaf cultivation by the farmers was dependent variable and 10 selected characteristics of the farmers was treated as independent variables. Data collection was started in 15 November, 2020 and completed in 10 December, 2020. Among the respondents, the majority (71.57 percent) of them had high commercialization of betel leaf by keeping very small portion for family consumption. Moreover it was observed that 87.24 percent of betel leaf growers had high to very high level commercialization of betel leaf. The statistical analysis exposed that educational qualification, extension media contact of betel leaf farmers and knowledge on betel leaf cultivation had significant positive relationships with the commercialization of betel leaf farmers. The findings may be helpful to formulate a better policy towards increasing the commercialization of betel leaf cultivation.

    EFFECT OF SOWING TIME AND NITROGEN ON THE GROWTh AND YIELD OF FRENCH BEAN (Phaseolus vulgaris L.)

    The experiment was conducted to investigate the effect of sowing time and nitrogen Of) the growth and yield of French bean (IJARI Zhar Sheern-!) at the Ilimi of Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University. Dhaka during the period of November. 2006 to March, 2007. The experiment included two Ihetors: Factor A: Four sowing time (T 1 l5 November, 'F 2 -30 November, T 3 =l5 December and 1 4 30 December) and Factor B: Four nitrogen level (N 0 =0 Kg N/ha, N1 -45 kg N/ha. N 2=-90 kg N/ha and N 3 135 kg N/ha). The experiment was laid out in Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with three replications. In case of sowing time. T 1 give highest yield of green pod (15.6 t!ha) and lowest (11.3 r/ha) was from 1 4 . Incase ol nitrogen. N 2 produced the lughesi yield (15.7 t/ha) and lowest (9.8 IJha) was from N o . For combined effect l' 1 N, give the highest yield (17.9 tlha) and lowest (8.4 tJha) was from l. 1 N0 . On the basis of economic analysis the highest net return (TK. 1,70,023 /lla) and the highest benefit cost ratio (2.7) were obtained lioni the treatment combination of T 1 N7 . It may be concluded that 15 November sowing with 90 kg N/ha is best for growth and yield of french bean.

    EFFECT OF VALUE CHAIN ON LIVELIHOOD DEVELOPMENT OF RDRS BENEFICIARIES

    The main focuses of this study were to: i) determine and describe some of the selected characteristics of the beneficiaries, ii) determine the extent of livelihood development of the beneficiaries due to their involvement in value chain process of RDRS, iii) explore the relationship of selected characteristics of the beneficiaries with their livelihood development and iv) determine the problems faced by beneficiaries in implementing value chain process and suggestions to overcome those problems. The study was carried out in Gangachara upazila of Rangpur District. One hundred and two (102) beneficiaries were selected as sample from an updated list of 203 beneficiaries using multi-stage random sampling method. Data were collected by a pre-tested interview schedule during 1 March to 15" April 2014. Based on Livelihood Development Index (LDI) of the 30 activities varied from 3.9 to 273.5. Top three activities of three aspects were i) Knowledge on price of milk in the market (273.5), ii) Family planning (236.2) and iii) Cattle (211.8). Near about two-third (62.7 percent) of the beneficiaries had medium development, 19.6 percent low and 17.6 percent had high development. Thus, majority (82.3 percent) of the beneficiaries had low to medium development in three aspects (assets and shelter, social empowerment and bargaining capacity). Among nine selected characteristics of the beneficiaries seven characteristics like educational qualification, farm size, annual family income, extension media contact and cosmopoliteness, savings and attitude towards RDRS showed significant positive relationship with their livelihood development, while their age, family size had no relationships. The two important problems were ‘lack of communication between buyers and producers’ (93.14 percent) and ‘lack of knowledge regarding value chain process in beneficiaries’ level’ (84.31 percent). The two important suggestions to overcome the problems were ‘collaborative action can be taken by GOs and NGOs to improve the transport system’ (95.10 percent) and ‘development of more local actors for better input supply to the beneficiaries’ (83.33percent).

    EFFECTS OF MULCHING AND PRUNING ON GROWTH AND YIELD OF TOMATO (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill.)

EFFECTS OF MULCHING AND PRUNING ON GROWTH AND YIELD TOMATO I\ field experiment was conducted with three mulching treatments cg. mulching The highest yield (94.37 t/ha) was obtained from straw mulch followed by mulch with black polyethylene (88.47 t/ha) and no mulch (72.43 t/ha) respectively. The pruning up to I '1 flower cluster produced highest yield (89.57 t/hu) than no pruning (89.17 I/ha) and the single stem pruning (76.53 I/ha). The highest fruit yield (103.5 t/ha) was recorded from the combination or mulching with straw and pruning up lo I '1 [lower cluster. which may be recommended for high yield or tomato.

    ISOLATION AND IDENTIFICATION OF CORYNEBACTERIUM SP. FROM THE CASES OF CLINICAL MASTITIS IN COW AT DINAJPUR DISTRICT OF BANGLADESH

    The present study was conducted to isolate and identify Corynebacterium sp. from the cases of clinical mastitis in cows at Dinajpur district of Bangladesh. For this, a total of 20 milk samples were collected from clinically mastitis affected cows of different dairy farms and rural domestic holdings at Dinajpur district in Bangladesh. The study was carried out during the period of September’2010 to February’2011. The milk samples were collected and brought to the Department of Microbiology, Faculty of Veterinary and Animal Science, Hajee Mohammad Danesh Science and Technology University, Dinajpur and subjected to different bacteriological tests for isolation and identification of bacteria based on morphology, staining, cultural and biochemical properties. Antibiotic sensitivity of the isolated organism was also studied. The isolated bacteria were Staphylococcus spp. (25%), Streptococcus spp. (15%), Escherichia coli (20%), Corynebacterium sp. (25%) and 15% were unidentified. On nutrient broth, the Corynebacterium sp. showed enough whitish turbidity and on nutrient agar the colonies were grayish in color while on blood agar the colonies were grayish in color about 1mm in diameter and surrounded by a small zone of hemolysis. In Gram’s staining technique the Corynebacterium sp. revealed Gram positive, violet color, short cocco-bacilli and arranged in bundles or clusters and singly also. In sugar fermentation tests (dextrose, lactose and maltose), the organism produced acid but no gas. In hanging drop slide method, the organism was nonmotile. Results of antibiotic sensitivity showed that Corynebacterium sp. was highly sensitive to gentamicin and ciprofloxacin, and some degree of resistance to tetracycline, ampicillin, penicillin and amoxycillin. The present study dictates that the Corynebacterium sp. was one of the important agents responsible for the clinical mastitis in cows at Dinajpur district of Bangladesh.

    MICROBIAL ANALYSIS OF RAW AND DIFFERENT BRANDS OF PASTEURIZED MILK

    A total of 32 milk samples were collected from 8 sources. Among them three were raw (designated as R1 to R3) and five were pasteurized milk (designated as P1 to P5). Each of the collected samples was investigated during the period from May to December, 2012. Microbiological tests such as viable plate count, coliform plate count, Staphylococcus plate count and Gram’s staining were performed to determine the loads of microbes in raw and different brands of pasteurized milk. Total viable counts (TVC) of three raw milk samples, R1, R2 and R3, were 745000 cfu/ml (log 5.87), 1357500 cfu/ml (log 6.13) and 1972500 cfu/ml (log 6.29), respectively. The presence of Escherichia coli in the samples of R1, R2, and R3 were 236 cfu/ml (log 2.37), 268 cfu/ml (log 2.42), 940 cfu/ml (log 2.97), respectively, but the presence of Staphylococcus were 798 cfu/ml (log 2.90), 590 cfu/ml (log 2.77), 615 cfu/ml (log 2.78), respectively. The average values of TVC (cfu/ml) were 98500 cfu/ml (log 4.99), 68450 cfu/ml (log 4.83), 195000 cfu/ml (log 5.29), 18950 cfu/ml (log 4.27) and 53375 cfu/ml (log 4.72), respectively for the samples of P1, P2, P3, P4, and P5 brands of pasteurized milk, where as Staphylococcal count were 869 cfu/ml (log 2.93), 647 cfu/ml (log 2.81), 443 cfu/ml (log 2.64), 858 cfu/ml (log2.93) and 28 cfu/ml (log1.45), respectively. The coliform counts were 166 cfu/ml (log 2.21), 91 cfu/ml (log1.95), 348 cfu/ml (log 2.54) and 101 cfu/ml (log 2.00) for the samples of P1, P2, P3, and P5, respectively. Coliform were not detected in P4 pasteurized milk sample. Therefore, it was concluded that high counts of bacteria were found in most of the samples. The detection of high counts of Staphylococcus coupled with the presence of E. coli are of public health significance to consumers.

    PERFORMANCE INVESTIGATION AND ANALYSIS OF MANET ROUTING PROTOCOLS IN EMERGENCY SITUATION

    Mobile Ad-Hoc Network (MANET) is categorized by mobile hosts, vibrant topology, multi-hop wireless connectivity and substructure less ad hoc situation. Wireless networking is an emerging technology that will allow users to access information and services regardless of their geographic position. In contrast to infrastructure based networks, in wireless ad hoc networks, all nodes are mobile and can be connected dynamically in an arbitrary manner. All nodes of these networks behave as routers and take part in discovery and maintenance of routes to other nodes in the network. This feature presents a great challenge to the design of a routing scheme since link bandwidth is very limited and the network topology changes as users roam. This thesis investigates the behavior of existing traditional routing algorithms and proposes and rigging a new routing approach for ad hoc wireless networks: Fisheye Routing. Fisheye Routing is similar to Link State routing, but uses a fisheye technique to reduce the consumption of bandwidth by control overhead. When all kind of network and all of the equipment will be destroyed, in this situation we can use Mobile Ad-Hoc network (MANET). MANET has a dynamic topology also there is not any center point for control the network. There has different type of routing protocol in MANET like as AODV, DSDV, DSR, TORA routing protocol.
