    A Pharmacological Evaluation of Medicinal Plants used by Folk Medicinal Practitioners of Station Purbo Para Village of Jamalpur Sadar Upazila in Jamalpur district, Bangladesh

    An ethnomedicinal survey was carried out at Station Purbo Para village of Jamalpur Sadar sub-district in Jamalpur district of Bangladesh. Information on 121 medicinal plant species was obtained from the folk medicinal practitioners. All plants were screened in the scientific databases and scientific journals for pharmacological activities or presence of phytochemicals, which could be relevant to their folk medicinal uses. 61 plants (50.4%) of the total were found to have relevant pharmacological activities consistent with their uses. The actual number of relevant plants can increase further for a number of plants used by the folk medicinal practitioners are yet to be studied through relevant scientific experiments. The results suggest that the medicinal plants used by the folk medicinal practitioners of Bangladesh cannot be dismiised as irrelevant; in fact, the present study demonstrates that a substantial percentage of plants should be scientifically studied as soon as possible in a thorough manner for they can be sources of potentially important and efficacious drugs.

    A Randomized Survey of Medicinal Plants used by Folk Medicinal Practitioners in Ten Districts of Bangladesh to Treat Leprosy

    Leprosy is a chronic disease caused by the microorganisms Mycobacterium leprae and Mycobacterium lepromatosis. It is primarily a granulomatous disease of the peripheral nerves and mucosa of the upper respiratory tract. The pauci-bacillary form of leprosy is treated with the drugs, rifampicin and Dapsone (diamino-diphenyl sulfone), while the multi-bacillary form of the disease is treated with the drugs rifampicin, clofazimine, and Dapsone. Bangladesh is one of the five countries who contribute to 82% of the sufferers from this disease world-wide. The disease is prevalent especially among the rural and urban poor, who despite provision of modern treatment often visit folk medicinal practitioners, who utilize medicinal plants for treatment of leprosy. Since the above drugs has been reported to have a number of adverse side-effects, it was of interest to document the medicinal plants used to treat leprosy in Bangladesh for such plants can prove to be valuable sources of drugs with less side-effects. Randomized ethnomedicinal surveys were therefore carried out in ten districts of Bangladesh to learn more about medicinal plants used by folk medicinal practitioners. Informed consent was obtained from the practitioners prior to interviews, which were conducted with the help of a semi-structured questionnaire and the guided field-walk method. The names of 16 plants were obtained, the plants being distributed into 11 families. The Combretaceae family provided the highest number of three plants followed by the Apocynaceae and Fabaceae families with 2 plants each. The various plant parts used to treat leprosy included whole plant, leaves, barks, roots, and seeds. The plants present considerable potential for discovery of novel compounds with less side-effect for treatment of leprosy and can, at least in Bangladesh, become a source of affordable and more easily available drugs.

    A Systematic Review on Removal Efficiency of Heavy Metals from Yamuna Water

    Yamuna River fulfils the water needs of various regions of North India. With the increasing level of pollution, the Yamuna River is declared as one of the polluted rivers in India. Numerous researches have reported the heavy metal presence in Yamuna River. Hence, we have focused our review towards analysing the heavy metals present in Yamuna River Basin and their concentration level during pre-pandemic and post-pandemic period. Delhi being the main polluter city causes the cloud formation (froth) and as a consequence a health risk among children and adults. Mathura and Agra are equally responsible in polluting the Yamuna River. Further, we have also included the role of microalgae as a promising solution for heavy metal removal. Altogether, this review will help the future researchers towards identifying potential approaches for water remediation.

    An investigation on hypoglycemic and hepatoprotective effects of oyster and reishi mushroom in diabetic and normal mice

    Pleurotus osteratus (family: Pleurotaceae) and Ganoderma lucidum (family: ganodermataceae) are common edible mushrooms in Bangladesh. Ethyl acetate extract of Pleurotus osteratus and Ganoderma lucidum were used to find out their hypolipidemic and hepatoprotective activity in alloxan induced diabetic mice and normal mice. Lipid profile namely LDL, TG and TC level significantly reduced after 24 hours by the intraperitoneal administration of these extracts in normal and diabetic mice whereas equipotently increased HLD level in both cases. Further, diabetic condition increases alanine aminotransferase ALT/SGPT and aspartate aminotransferase AST/SGOT enzyme level in liver. Present treatment also showed that both the oyster and reishi has significantly inhibited the rise of both serum liver enzymes in the treated mice compared to controls.

    Antidiabetic And Free Radical Scavenging Activities Of Methanolic Extract Of Citrullus Lanatus (Fruit Rind)

    Free radicals are associated with Diabetes and its complications. The present study was designed to investigate DPPH scavenging in-vitro antioxidant activity and antidiabetic activity on alloxan induced diabetic mice. Mice treated with extract dose at 300mg/kg p.o, showed a remarkable decrease ( ***p<0.001) of blood glucose concentration at 90min and 120min compared to diabetic control group and metformin was taken as a reference standard. In this study antioxidant activity of Citrullus lanatus was g/mlg/ml in contrast with ascorbic acid IC50 was 36.34 IC50 was 102.51 g/ml.g/ml in contrast with ascorbic acid IC50 was 36.34 g/ml.

    Impact of resuscitation of Ichamoti river, Pabna on urban land price by using hedonic pricing model

Inadditiontomarketbenefits,therearehugenon-marketbenefitsagainstenvironmentalrestorationthatareunderestimatedduetolackofadequateinformation.Thisstudyisbeingconductedtoassesstheimpactof the IchamotiRiverresuscitationonmunicipallandvaluesandhelpdecision-makersassessthebenefitsoftheproject. In this study, the Hedonic Pricing Model (HPM) is applied to understand the relationship between theriver ecosystem and urban land prices. Five attributes: locational, environmental, municipal and city attributes are taken to develop the model. A comparative analysis among linear, log-linear, log-log and linear-log functional forms is conducted for the study. Finally, aMultiple Linear Regression (MLR) model is chosen by testing the major five assumptions of the regression model: linearity, multicollinearity, normality, auto-correlation and homoskedasticity. From the result of the model, the impact on land price is predicted.Two scenarios are assumed to predict the impact of the resuscitated river. One is a free-flowing and navigable river all yearround and the other is a seasonally free-flowing river. In this study, statistical analysis is shown with the social perceptions of city dwellers. In social perception, distance from the city center is the top priority (40% of respondents) when determining the price of land. The other parameters are road & transportation facilities, drainage facilities, mix use potentiality and distance from the river.Distance to river is treated as the lowest priority (58%) of the five main parameters. This is because the urban environment cannot offer advantages and comforts yet. However, people complained about the negative externalities of mosquitoes breeding in river dumps and 500meters buffer zones. The study also addressed the possible impact of river resuscitation on urban land prices. About 72% of the respondents replied about the possibility of land value increase. In the analysis, the log-linear form of the HPM explains approximately 85% variability of the response data around its mean by the listed variables which is the highest among the four forms of the HPM. The result of the model is statistically significant (p=0.001). The result shows significance at a 90% confidence level for the variables: healthcare service center, major landuse type, ratio of road length (>8 feet) to total road length, Euclidean distance from river, walking distance from nearest college and ratio of built-up areas excluding waterlogging condition of the clusters of the study area. The model predicted no significant relationship between environmental attributes and land prices in the final HPM. In consequence, the resuscitation of the Ichamoti River will not have any environmental impact on land prices. Therefore, without the free flow of rivers, there would be no added value to land values in the study area, given current land exchange trends. After river resuscitation, visionary landowners will create market demand for many environmental benefits.People may be willing to pay for services that increase the price of their land if they enjoy the benefits of the environmental attributes produced by regenerated rivers. The model predicted that the free-flowing river all year round had a positive impact on the land price. Revitalization of rivers will accelerate riverside commercialization with the navigation route. Therefore, changes in land use patterns affect land prices. Out of 25 clusters, 14 will benefit more or less from rising land prices. The biggest impact is seen in the projected value added of the Central Business District (CBD) at 20.90lacs BDT/decimal (68.98% increase in price). In the Library Bazar area, the price will be nearly double (87.35% increase) to present land price. At Shibrampur, Library Bazar, Kachari Para,Narayanpur andGhosh Para around the CBD, the average price is estimated at 6-9 lacs BDT per decimal. Poilanpur has the least impact on land prices at 0.92lacs BDT. The impact should occur within 400-500 meters of the river. In the CBD the impact is greater and on the periphery, it diminishes at a decreasing rate in line with the evolution of the actual price of the land.

    Influential Factors On Prescription: a Cross Sectional Study From Bangladesh: Focus On Pharmaceutical Marketing

    A physician’s decision to adopt a drug is influenced by their exposure to other physicians’ attitude, knowledge, or behavior. Quality of drug, efficacy of drug, pricing, status of the pharmaceutical company etc. more or less influence the physician to choose medication for patients. Pharmaceutical marketing is strongstrategy to impact on prescription behavior. Because it is quite different from general marketing as the decision makers are the physicians not the patients, thus maximum marketing strategies are designed on focusing to them. This study explores the influence of pharmaceutical marketing on the prescription practices of physicians in Bangladesh. A self-administered questionnaire was applied to collect data from 500 physicians all over the country. The main theme of the study is to develop a framework to find out the impact of different kinds of promotional tools offered by pharmaceutical companies on the prescription of physicians. In this study it was found that prescription behavior of a physician greatly influenced by pharmaceutical marketing. Skillful presentation, up to date information, maintaining good relation and free gift sample can boost up the brand in physicians prescription.     Phytochemical Screenining and in-vitro Thrombolytic Activity of Methanolic Leaf Extract of Zanthoxylum rhetsa

    Atherothrombosis is a major cause of global life threatening heart and cerebral diseases. Considering this, present study was designed to investigate thrombolytic activity of methanolic extract of Zanthoxylum rhetsa leaves. The methanolic extract was found to have significant thrombolytic activity (25.23 ± 0.04 %) compared to the effect of Streptokinase (66.98 ± 0.11 %) used as a positive control and water (3.14 ± 0.3 1%) used as a negative control. Preliminary phytochemical screening of the extract showed the presence of flavonoids, terpenoids and tannin were present in leaves extract of Zanthoxylum rhetsa one of which has thrombolytic properties.     Preparation and evaluation of SEDDS of simvastatin by in vivo, in vitro and ex vivo technique

    The objective of this work was to formulate a Self Emulsifying Drug Delivery System (SEDDS) of simvastatin, a poorly soluble drug and to evaluate by in vivo, in vitro and ex vivo techniques. Oils and surfactants were screened out depending upon their solubilizing capacity. Among all of the solvents, Capryol 90 showed good solubilizing capacity. It dissolved 105 mg/ml of simvastatin. Tween-80 also showed good solubilizing capacity which was 117 mg/ml. The two excipients were used to prepare simvastatin SEDDS. Formulations were initially checked for the color, clarity and sedimentation. The SEDDS formulations were transparent and clear. Formulation F2 containing 7:3 (m/m) mixture of Capryol 90/Tween-80 produced smallest micro-emulsion with particles size of 0.074 µm and drug release was higher than other formulation (102% within 20 min). Ex vivo study of the SEDDS formulation was evaluated using guinea pig intestinal sac. Drug diffused from F2 formulation was significantly higher than pure drug (p < 0.001). In vivo study of SEDDS was performed in albino mice using plasma cholesterol level as a pharmacodynamic marker parameter. The test formulation (F2) appeared remarkable reduction in plasma cholesterol level, after oral administration which showed that SEDDS may be an effective technique for the oral administration of simvastatin.
