    Dual-purpose surface plasmon resonance fiber sensor for power monitoring and biosensing application

    We demonstrate a simple and straightforward photonic crystal fiber (PCF) sensor for voltage and comparatively higher refractive index (RI) sensing, incorporating the surface plasmon resonance (SPR) phenomenon for better and more reliable performance. The sensor contains three air holes; the central air hole is filled with an electric field-tunable nematic liquid crystal (NLC), while the remaining holes are filled with the analyte. Due to changes in the surrounding voltages, the RI of NLC varies, and the sensor exhibits excellent sensitivity of 6 nm/V and a resolution of 16.67 mV in the voltage range of 200 V to 250 V. The sensor also demonstrates outstanding linearity performance. Additionally, the sensor is capable of RI detection in the sensing range of 1.45 to 1.50, which is rarely reported in the literature. In RI sensing, a sensor resolution of 4.00×10–5 RIU and a sensitivity of 25,000 nm/RIU are recorded across the sensing range. Furthermore, the sensor’s performance is evaluated for different brain-injured tissues, showing excellent results in this application as well. Hence, it can be easily observed that the proposed sensor has the potential to perform well in both the power sector and the biosensing field.

    Investigation of cytotoxicity and anti-microbial property of the methanolic extract of aphanamixis polystachya fruit

    The purpose of this study was to understand and investigate the cytotoxic and antimicrobial effect of the traditional medicinal plant Aphanamixis polystachya. Toxicologically it is classified under the family Meliaceae. In this paper the study was conveyed on the methanol extract of the fruit of Aphanamixis polystachya. Many researches were done on this plant species by many scholars at different time period but the intention of the study was to emphasize on the possibility of its cytotoxic property. To prove the cytotoxic property and detect its intensity, the Brine Shrimp Lethality Bio-assay and to measure the anti-microbial property Disk-diffusion method (Kirby-Bauer) was chosen. After collection, identification and drying the fruit sample, extraction was performed by using methanol solvent system. The extracted components were used to measure the cytotoxicity level over Brine Shrimp Nauplii and anti-microbial property was tested over Candida albicans, Shigella dysentery and Staphylococcus aureus.

    Traffic safety perception of garment workers

    Pedestrian injuries have become a major safety problem all over the world, especially in third world countries such as, Bangladesh. However, the country is heavily dependent on its RMG industry which is the greatest source of generating foreign currency, mass employment and a gateway to social-economic development for it. This study reveals, majority of the garments workers choose walking as their mode of transport and thus fall under pedestrian category. Consequently this particular group is under severe threat. On response to the problem, this study aims to explore garments workers traffic safety perception and the factors associated with it. A questionnaire survey was conducted among four representative garments industry, and a total of 380 samples were collected. Using the software ‘STATA’ a linear regression model analysis was applied to analyze the data. Results showed that risk perception varied significantly with the worker’s age, income group, marital status, number of children , mode of transport, average weekly walk duration, educational qualification, previous accident experience (active and passive), etc.
