    A learner-centred approach: perspectives of the secondary school teachers in Bangladesh

    The study explored secondary school teachers‘ perceptions, classroom practices, and challenges they faced in implementing Learner-Centred Approach (LCA) in Bangladesh. Teaching techniques have an impact on students' learning, especially the use of learner-centred teaching strategies helps the students to achieve success in academies as well as develops other skills including communication and leadership skills. A qualitative approach was adopted to examine teachers‘ attitude and how it has impacted their English classes. Data were collected from 10 secondary school teachers who teach different schools in Dhaka. The findings suggest that teachers hold a positive perception about this approach because students remain active and their concentration, engagement, collaboration, and communication skills develop, which are related to their academic excellence, lifelong learning and developing humane qualities. However, classroom practices of the teachers remain different depending on the institution and context. A lack of training on LCA, lack of preparedness of the students, lack of classroom facilities, imbalanced teacher- student ratio, and long-term socio-cultural impacts of teacher centred practices are some of the constraints to implementing this approach. Findings and implications of this research may help the teachers and policy makers in reforming the policy and practices for acquiring a smooth transition to LCA as well as establishing sustainable education in Bangladesh. These implications extend to learners' long term retention of many skills and thus offer a foundation for further exploration like how this approach can be systematically applied in the English language teaching.

    Design and Numerical Analysis of a Novel Photonic Crystal Fiber Based Chemicals Sensor in the THz Regime

    We presented a decagonal cladding and hexahedron core-based photonic crystal fiber (PCF) to sense chemicals in the terahertz frequency (THz). Circular air holes (CAHs) in the cladding region make up the proposed sensor. A wide variety of frequencies were evaluated to analyze the sensor’s performance in terms of sensitivity, confinement loss, and effective material loss respectively. We designed and quantitatively analyzed the optical properties of our proposed hexahedron-based PCF sensor using the finite element method (FEM). Square-shaped air hole length, strut, and core size have also been researched to improve the performance of the proposed sensor’s sensing components and fabrication tolerance. At ideal conditions, the suggested PCF sensor has a maximum relative sensitivity of 94.65%, confinement loss of 6.01 × 10− 8 cm− 1 , effective material loss (EML) of 9.16 × 10− 4 cm− 1 , and effective mode area (EMA) of 1.35 × 10− 7 m2 . We are confident that the suggested sensor’s optimized geometrical structure will be manufacturing-friendly, as well as the sensor’s contribution to practical uses. Furthermore, our proposed PCF fiber will be ideal in the terahertz (THz) regions for various optical communication applications and medicinal signals.

    Design of Hexagonal Shaped Spectroscopy Based Biosensor for the Detection of Tuberculosis

    A proposal has been made to identify tuberculosis cells using a novel compact sensor based on photonic crystal fiber: PCF in accordance with hexagonal spectroscopy. This proposed structure, which consists of a closely packed hexagonal air hole in the cladding region and a hollow-core area, possesses a very low loss of 6.30 × 10−8 dB/m and an exceptionally high sensitivity of up to 91.75 % (tuberculosis cell for 1.345). Numerous optical parameters have been identified and assessed, comprised of the numerical aperture, the V-parameter, or normalized frequency (Veff), and the effective area (Aeff). The operational wavelength range is defined as 0.80–3.0 THz. The numerical investigation of the properties of the proposed TB sensors is performed within the environment of COMSOL Multiphysics (Version 5.3) using FV-FEM stands for the full vector finite element method. PCF sensors composed of hexagonal lattice in a circular form with ZEONEX as the backdrop material is intended to boost the sensitivity response in comparison to the earlier works. Additionally, the sensor that is being displayed achieves a single modality throughout its whole operational wavelength range. This proposed sensor may play a significant role in identifying tuberculosis thanks to its superior sensitivity response and extremely minimal confinement loss. So, it is clearly seen that this sensor could be used to bio-medical sectors with process of terahertz (THz) wave pulse.

    Design of Quasi-Shaped Spectroscopy Based Optical Sensor for the Detection of Alcohol

    In this research, an entirely novel optical sensor for alcohol detection based on quasi-shaped spectroscopy is offered. A quasi shape with a tightly bonded structure in the cladding region and a hexahedron core region makes up the recommended design, which has a remarkable sensitivity of about 91.35%, 92.55%, and 90.40%and low confinement losses (CLs) of 5.44 × 10−08 dB/m, 6.75 × 10−08 dB/m, and 5.85 × 10−08 dB/m for detecting alcohol like ethanol (n = 1.354), butanol (n = 1.3993), and propanol(n = 1.384), at 1 THz. The numerical aperture, the effective area, and the V-parameter have all been identified and assessed. The 0.8THz to 3 THz operational wavelength range is stated. In the COMSOL Multiphysics (Version 5.6) environment, the properties of these suggested alcohol sensors are numerically examined utilizing the FEM (finite element method) with full vectors. In contrast to other efforts, the proposed sensor, which consists of a quasi-lattice PCF with a perfectly matched layer (PML) of a circular air hole shape and TOPAS as the background material, aims to improve sensitivity response. The proposed sensor might be crucial in the alcohol detection process due to its superior sensitivity response, a single mode of operation across the entire operational terahertz range, and shallow confinement loss. So, this PCF can proficiently be pragmatic in many biological sensing and other THz technology domains.

    Development of effective vaccine against local isolates of foot and mouth disease virus in Bangladesh

    Foot and mouth disease (FMD) is a highly contagious picornaviral disease of domestic and wild cloven-hoofed animals throughout the world including Bangladesh. The endemicity of this disease is causing notifiable economic loss and an impediment to the full potential surge of livestock industry in Bangladesh. Vaccination using imported or locally produced vaccines is the existing practice of controlling the disease in Bangladesh, although vaccine failure is common upon vaccination. The causes of these failures are multifold including selection of inappropriate vaccine virus strain(s), inadequate antigenic payload and improper vaccine production process. It was presumed that a quality assured FMD vaccine tailored to the circulating indigenous FMDV strains might efficiently protect the susceptible animals in Bangladesh. Hence, the present investigation was envisaged to carry out an extensive epidemiological study and molecular characterization of the circulatory FMDVs in Bangladesh, selection of appropriate vaccine candidates, optimization of vaccine production processes and effective vaccine development. A total of 319 FMDV infected tissue samples from 47 FMD outbreaks were collected and analyzed over a period of seven years from 2012 to 2018. Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) based analysis of the samples revealed that FMDV serotypes O, A and Asia1 are prevalent in Bangladesh with predominance of serotype O (81%) followed by serotype A (13%) and Asia1 (6%). Intra-serotype genetic divergence specifically in serotype O was evident by VP1 protein coding gene based phylogeny studies. Serotype O isolates of Bangladesh clustered in Ind2001d, Ind2001BD1 and Ind2001BD2 sublineages of Ind2001 lineage, although most of the recent isolates belonged to novel and dominating sublineage Ind2001BD1. Phylogeny of FMDV serotype A isolates of Bangladesh clustered all of them in Genotype VII of Asia Topotype. Depending on the prevalence and dominance, FMDV serotype O isolate BAN/TA/Dh-301/2016 from Ind2001BD1 sublineage and serotype A isolate BAN/CH/Sa-304/2016 from Genotype VII were selected as vaccine candidates. Comparative genetic distance analysis confirmed that selected vaccine candidates are significantly (p=0.001-0.002) genetically closer to the respective isolates of Bangladesh than the current Indian vaccine strains. Z-test for selection predicted that the vaccines prepared by selected candidates will protect animals against all the circulatory FMDV serotype O and A isolates of Bangladesh. The selected vaccine candidates were adapted and propagated in BHK-21 cell line and subjected to complete genome sequencing. The complete genome of vaccine candidates O/BAN/TA/Dh-301/2016 and A/BAN/CH/SaPage | II 304/2016 were found to be 8211 nt and 8221 nt in length respectively with an ORF of 6999 nt for each. Deduced amino acid (aa) sequences comparison deciphered that the VP1, VP2 and VP3 regions of O/BAN/TA/Dh-301/2016 had 5%, 3% and 5% structural variability with respective regions of current Indian vaccine strain O/India/R2/75. Three aa substitutions in critical antigenic site 1 in G-H loop of VP1 and 2 aa substitutions in antigenic site 2 of VP2 regions were evident. Similar regions of A/BAN/CH/Sa-304/2016 showed 8%, 6% and 5% variability compared to respective regions of serotype A vaccine strain A/IND40/00 with four aa substitutions in critical antigenic sites of VP1. For the purpose of vaccine production, bulk amount of both the vaccine candidates were successfully inactivated by Binary Ethylenimine within 9-10 hours after the onset of inactivation. Extrapolation of inactivation kinetics of both the vaccine candidates confirmed that there will be less than 1 infectious particle in a 104 liter batch after 24 hours inactivation cycle. Complete inactivation of virus was assured by the absence of CPE even at third serial passage of inactivated virus in BHK-21 cell monolayers. Inactivated virus particles in the fluids were significantly (p=0.002-0.003) concentrated by ultrafiltration system using 100 kDa hollow fiber cartridge. After concentration, the final concentrations of inactivated virus particles in the fluids were found to be 16.33±1.15 µg/ml and 14.33±0.57 µg/ml for serotype O and A respectively. Vaccines were formulated with Montanide ISA 201 oil adjuvant and the final concentrations of inactivated FMD viral antigens per 2 ml of vaccine were 14.5 µg and 12.41 µg for serotype O and A respectively. Absence of adverse reactions in the recipient guinea pigs during in-vivo vaccine efficacy testing confirmed the safety of developed vaccines. The minimum inactivated virus particle contents that protected 100% animals from virus challenge and elicited SN50 titer significantly higher than the protective level was 3.53 µg and 3.10 µg for FMDV serotype O and A vaccine candidates respectively. In 2D-MNT tests, the antigenic relationship (r) values of the circulating FMD serotype O and A field viruses with respective vaccine strains were found to be >0.3. Strong antigenic relationship between field virus and selected vaccine strains confirmed that vaccine produced using these candidate viruses will protect all genetically divergent FMDV strains of respective serotypes circulating in Bangladesh.

    English-Medium of Instruction (EMI) in Tanzanian secondary school: Students' and Teachers' perceptions and challenges

    The purpose of this study is to examine secondary school students' and instructors' attitudes of using English as a teaching medium in Tanzania. The study was held in three schools in the Unguja North region. The study was based on answering research questions; first, what are the perceptions of Tanzanian secondary school students and teachers toward the English language medium of instruction? as well as what obstacles do students and teachers face while employing English as a medium of teaching in school? It is a mixed method study that collects and analyses data using qualitative and quantitative methods. Furthermore, the researcher employed a questionnaire to answer the first research question. The research discovered that teachers and students had a favorable opinion of English as a teaching medium and that students feel at ease in English-taught subjects. The study discovered several obstacles teachers and students face while utilizing English as a medium of education, such as low student competence in English, the effect of primary school language of instruction, overcrowded classes, and instructional approaches. The research will assist teachers in revising their teaching methods and strategies, as well as the government restructuring the national secondary school curriculum and revising the national language policy. Furthermore, the study will shed insight on future studies on English language medium of instruction and second language learning in Tanzania based on qualitative, quantitative, or mixed method research.

    Distribution level solar energy generation has gained importance and popularity, because it helps create a sustainable electricity system while reducing the harmful environmental impacts our current power systems have. The simple model has a photo-current source, a single diode junction and a series resistance, and includes temperature dependences. When settings are right, the grid- connected PV system supplies the additional power, moreover consumption by the connected load, to the utility grid. This study proposes an alternative energy source, a laboratory scale grid- connected photovoltaic system. The control of DC/DC converter is ensured by using perturb and observe method in order to make photovoltaic panels work at maximum power point (MPP) in all cases. A grid-tied solar power inverter does DC-to-AC conversion and minimizes energy transfer losses. The inverter also has an anti-islanding feature, which senses a power outage and prevents back-feeding through isolating the circuit. The circuit’s breakers isolate electrical components and protect the circuit.

    Health trauma and well-being assistant for Bengali seniors in household: a multimodal approach

    The increasing number of elderly individuals living alone has emerged as a pressing global concern. Our research aims to address this issue by developing advanced modules that can be integrated into a system that enhances the quality of life for older adults. The modules focus on medicine detection, fall detection, reminders for important tasks and events and providing companionship through friendly verbal interactions. Through the integration of cutting-edge deep learning techniques, diverse models and natural language processing (NLP), we have successfully designed an effective medication and well-being assistant. These modules use computer vision technology along with reinforced learning from human feedback and convolutional neural networks (CNNs) to reach our goal. The modules can be integrated into systems to empower elderly individuals to lead more active and fulfilling lives. Finally, this research contributes to the well-being and happiness of the elderly, highlighting the significance of comprehensive support systems in promoting their overall well-being.

    Impact of land use change on ecosystem services in Barisal sadar upazila

    Bangladesh is one of the most densely populated countries in the world having an area of 1, 47,570 square kilometers. About 1063 people live per sq. km in Bangladesh. According to Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics, the number of population in Bangladesh was 76.4 million in 1974, which increased to 149.78 million in 2011 and 150.99 million in 2016. The stress exerted by this huge population to our small land area is tremendous. As a consequence land use pattern showed a notable conversion through this period. Barisal Sadar Upazila not only the central part of Barisal District but also a key point for entire southern part of Bangladesh, is also affected by this land use change. In this research, land use change of Barisal Sadar Upazila have been analyzed using Landsat satellite image from 1980 to 2010 with 10 years interval with ILWIS version 3.7.2, a windows base open source software and its impact on ecosystem services have determined with the help of secondary data and a questionnaire survey. In Barisal Sadar Upazila, Agricultural area decreased from 125.08 sq. km to 87.86 sq. km; Wetlands decreased from 24.69 sq. km to 13.02 sq. km; Water body decreased from 34.19 sq. km to 32.05 sq. km during 1980 to 2010 period. On the contrary, Urban area increased from 14.33 sq. km to 43.15 sq. km, which is more than three times of its original area and rural area increased from 95.6 sq. km to 117.80 sq. km during 1980 to 2010. These land use change put a significant impact on various ecosystem services which is a huge concern in present situation. Due to the reduction of agricultural area and water body, several provisioning services such as production of rice, captured fisheries and livestock are decreasing and so is the area used for these production. For maximum productivity within minimum area, farmers are using hybrid seeds, different types of pesticides and chemical fertilizers; which destroyed the natural ecosystem. Natural fish production and number of domestic animal reduced dangerously. Besides, increase in urban and rural area helps to improve educational, recreational and communication facilities of Barisal Sadar Upazila. It also affects the livelihood off the community. Many people are living fishing and agricultural profession for private and public services and entrepreneurships such as auto rickshaw driver, shopkeepers, saw miller, small businessman. Sometime these changes brought economic solvency, better educational, medical and transportation facilities and improve the life style of the local community. But it affects the various ecosystem services adversely and some of the damages are not recoverable. For a sustainable development, district and upazila land use management strategy should be taken up in order to enhance the ecosystem services. As well as local people need to be aware in this regard.

    Science is going to be flourished day by day. Almost every invention becomes successful due to the development of science. Technology, the modified segment of science, makes the thing possible, which was impossible yesterday. Education provides important leanings of the modern inventions and the theories and also gives us a combined knowledge over theoretical and practical studies. Literatures provide the right information which we have been learned through our university. ON the other hand practical knowledge increases the practice of theoretical perception clear and more efficient. Internship has made this opportunity. Because we have learned theoretical knowledge last four years but due to lack of proper industrial knowledge on our course, we would not been said a complete engineer. Industrial attachment did work for us. We have taken part in this industrial attachment in Norban Comtex Ltd. Norban Comtex Ltd is one of the renowned 100% export oriented industries in Bangladesh. The factory is concern with the production in washing, embroidery. We have completed 2 months long industrial training in Merchandising, Sample, CAD and pattern, Cutting, Sewing Washing and Embroidery Section. When we started this training we did not have any idea about a the factory. During the training period we went every section of this factory. We faced a lot of technical problems, which we solved by consulting with the related persons. The respective personals of each individual sections of the industry helped us to explain their working process. We saw different types of machines, their functions, manufacturing processes, and analysis the corresponding products.

    Mutual fund in Bangladesh

    The mutual fund industry in Bangladesh was thrown open to the private sector in 1999. Since then the AMCs with mutual funds has grown in excess of Tk. 3500 core with over 80% of the fund being managed by private sector AMCs. To protect the interest of the investors, SEC prescribed a structure to be followed by the financial institutions and mutual funds alike. The structure depends upon independent directors and statutory auditors. In order to safeguard investors’ money in the current unstable situation of Bangladesh stock market, corporate governance guidelines have been institutionalized. This report attempts to critically review the requirements of mutual fund regulations in Bangladesh and their implementation by the various AMCs. Mutual Fund is a Capital Market Investment Vehicle. In Bangladesh there are 48 Mutual Funds under 17 Asset Management Companies. However, most of the mutual funds are diversified and have reduced its unique risk. The growth oriented funds have performed better in terms of total risk and the funds are offering advantages of diversification and professionalism to the investors.     Parents’ obesession with English-version schools in Bangladesh: a quatative exploration

    This study explores why parents are obsessed with English-version schools in Bangladesh. The research also examines parents' challenges while choosing such schools and the impact on students' cultural identity and connection with their native language. The study finds out the historical significance of English in the country and the societal perception of English education as a symbol of social status. It also finds the government's emphasis on English as a mandatory subject from classes 1-12 as students must pass the exam and its impact on the education system of Bangladesh. Data for this study were collected by conducting in-depth interviews with a diverse group of 15 Bangladeshi parents from different socioeconomic backgrounds, regions, and educational backgrounds. The qualitative method is considered the most suitable method for this study as I tried to explore the phenomena in detail. Through thematic analysis and using cognitive obsession theory the study uncovers the motivations driving parents' preferences for English-version schools, such as aspirations for better career opportunities, globalization's influence, and perceptions of higher-quality education. This study described why parents are obsessed with English version schools in Bangladesh. This study also finds that parents' obsession with English-version schools is rooted in the belief that English proficiency enhances their children's competitive edge and aligns with the demands of a globalized world. However, this preference poses challenges, including a potential disconnect from local culture and language. Investigating why parents in Bangladesh like English schools so much, even though English isn't their first language, can give us helpful information for making rules about education. It helps us find a middle ground, where we see both the good and not-so-good things about using English as the primary language for teaching.

    Portable UV-spectrophotometer to determine the concentration of potassium

    Bangladesh is mainly depended on agriculture for her economy. Agriculture is the backbone of Bangladesh. Thousands of people depend on agriculture. About 60-70% people depends on agriculture. Agriculture is the main source of our countries economy. It comprises about 15% of the country's GDP and 60% of the total labor force.It is revealed that paddy is the mostly produced crop in this area and fertilizers and pesticides were intensively used for boosting up the production of crops. Fertilizer consumption (% of fertilizer production) in Bangladesh was 314.42 as of 2013. Its highest value over the past 11 years was 440.66 in 2011, while its lowest value was 121.21 in 2002. The problem is that humans tend to use too much of fertilizers in the soil because they have to cater to the global demand of food. To mention more than half of the total yield production is out of synthetic or inorganic fertilizers which contains components like nitrogen, potassium, sulfur, calcium, magnesium, and so on. These chemicals and minerals, although help in boosting the growth of plants, they also have their drastic side effects in the long run. Farmers of Bangladesh use either greater amount or less amount of fertilizer than the standard amount provided by government. Most of the farmers and agrochemical dealers were not aware about the impact of fertilizer and pesticide on crop production and environment as well. This outcome draws base line situation which can be useful towards relevant research. Thus we develop a portable device by which concentration ofPotassium (K) in soil can be detected. Farmers will be able to judge what amount of fertilizers to be used for that particular soil thus excessive use of fertilizers can be drastically reduced.

    Prediction Model for a Student to Find Best Department of Undergraduate Admission

    Our research title is "Prediction model for a student to find best department of undergraduate admission". We have used SPSS statistical platform for storing data and we have use WEKA to find out best algorithm model for finding best outcome according to our data structure. We have selected KNN model for our project. Finally we have used python language to implement the project. In this study, originally implemented by using Bangladeshi students' & educated employed students' real data. The data has learned to a machine using python language which is helped us to find out departments' successor prediction in percent serially. In this system, it has focused on previous group & group courses' result first. Moreover it is focused on general courses which process the overall result & match with the learned result which priority is the best profession & success too. As we know Bangladeshi students are too much brilliant. So, we think if they get the opportunity to choose which department is best for him and then it will be helpful for their career.

    Prediction of double diffusive mixed convection in a partially heated and concentrated polygonal enclosure using artificial neural network and hybrid nanofluid

    The objective of the present study is to perform a numerical analysis of double-diffusive mixed convection within a polygonal cavity subjected to lid-driven motion. The cavity, partially heated and concentrated, is filled with a hybrid nanofluid composed of Al2O3 (50%) and Cu (50%) nanoparticles suspended in water. The lower middle portion of the cavity is heated, while the upper horizontal boundaries are maintained at a low temperature. The upper left wall moves at a constant velocity in the positive direction, whereas the other walls are thermally insulated. The physical problem is mathematically represented by a set of governing equations along with appropriate boundary conditions. Using a class of suitable transformations, the governing equations and boundary conditions are converted into a non-dimensional form, which are then solved using a finite element-based Galerkin weighted residual method. An artificial neural network (ANN) model is also developed using simulation data obtained from the numerical solution to predict different performance parameters within the present framework. The study investigates the effects of dimensionless parameters such as Richardson number (Ri), Reynolds number (Re), Lewis number (Le), Buoyancy ratio (Br), and nanoparticle volume fraction (ϕ), with a constant Prandtl number (Pr = 6.8377). The results are presented in terms of flow patterns, temperature distributions, solute distributions, average Nusselt number, and average Sherwood number. It is observed that the average Nusselt number increases with increasing Ri, Re, Br, and ϕ, but decreases with increasing Le. Additionally, all parameters show an upward trend in the average mass transfer rate. Specifically, the average heat transfer rate increases by 37.42% when Ri increases from 0.01 to 10, and decreases by 11.25% when Le increases from 0 to 5. Using the simulation data, an innovative ANN model is developed for accurate prediction. For training and validation data, the model predicts the average Nusselt number with 99.57% accuracy and the average Sherwood number with 99.63% accuracy. For test data, the model predicts the average Nusselt number with 99.34% accuracy and the average Sherwood number with 99.49% accuracy. Therefore, the proposed ANN model accurately predicts the responses for the current framework.
