However, teachers and the authority could not apply that established method during the remote assessment. To assess students’ knowledge, they started to take assignments that were assigned by the teachers. Besides assignments, teachers used continuous assessment procedures to assess learners’ knowledge. The assessment process changed again when the pandemic’s intensity started to cool off and everything was gradually returning to its place. Therefore, this study focuses on the two aspects of English assessment at the junior secondary level of Bangladesh; one is the adaptation of the assessment process of English throughout the pandemic as well as in the time of post-pandemic transition and another aspect is the impact it had on students and teachers during the same period. This study is accomplished by following a qualitative research approach. All data has been collected by interviewing participants and analysed through thematic analysis. The participants are teachers and students of junior secondary level in Bangladesh. The results are reported under the following themes; i) Adaptation of Assessment Process ii) Different types of Assessments and iii) Impact of the assessment. Moreover, this study offers a brief discussion on these themes, for instance, it talks about how teachers and learners have adapted to all new assessment processes during the pandemic and in the transition to post-pandemic. Then it focuses on the types of assessments English teachers have followed in online mode as well as after the pandemic. Lastly, this study explains the impact alternative assessments had during the pandemic and are now in the post-pandemic transition period. Such an exam acts as a marker for students’ language proficiency on an international scale, as well as a gatekeeper to foreign universities. However, given Bangladesh’s non-implemented communicative framework in language learning, it is seen that the average Bangladeshi student’s English proficiency is subpar even after they complete their college education which includes about 12 years of English learning. In this paper, I have therefore focused mainly on Bangladeshi students studying under the national curriculum because they often struggle to get good scores in such tests because of the aforementioned flaws in the education system. Hence, students often have to take preparations for months on end before attending these tests. This qualitative research is done by taking extensive interviews of 10 participants through phone calls. Next, from the recorded interviews thematic analysis was done, which yielded the following themes: background and English language exposure, choice of discipline, preparation and results and challenges faced – all of which correlate to challenges and preparation of external standardized exams. Future research is recommended in this field since there is a scarcity of research on standardized language exams in Bangladesh.Item If we can not do classes, we will face great loss”: the experience of university students from remote areas of Bangladesh during COVID-19(BRAC University, 2021-05) Tasnim, Sadia; Al Amin, Md.This research, a qualitative study in nature, has explored how effective online classes there have been for the remote tertiary students of Bangladesh amidst Covid-19 pandemic.
