A review on role of anti-SARS-CoV-2 monoclonal antibodies in the treatment of COVID-19
(BRAC University, 2022-02) Afrin, Sadia; Momtaz, Tanisha
Traditional treatments and symptomatic care are still the only options for most patients as no therapeutic drug has been licensed for treating COVID-19 yet. Monoclonal antibodies generated from convalescent patients or humanized mice exposed to SARS-CoV-2 antigens were awarded emergency use authorization. An ongoing phase I, II, and III placebo-controlled trial is testing whether symptomatic adults can be treated safely and effectively. Casirivimab and imdevimab may have a therapeutic benefit in people who were seronegative when they received treatment. An IgG1 (Immunoglobulin G1) with an unaltered Fc region, Bamlanivimab was generated from the convalescent plasma of a COVID-19 patient. Patients with renal impairment, pregnancy, or breastfeeding status are not advised to alter their dosages. SARS-genomic CoV-2's organization is nearly identical to that of SARS-CoV, with the exception of a few genes for accessory proteins.

Adaptation of child focused cognitive behavior therapy as an intervention program
(©University of Dhaka, 2023-04-30) Afrin, Sadia
Child-focused cognitive behavioral therapy (CF-CBT) is a treatment approach which is based on evidence. The purpose of this therapy is to help children, adolescents, and their parents (or other caregivers) overcome child-related difficulties. These difficulties include anxiety, anger, maladaptive behavior, negative irrational thinking process etc. As far as Bangladesh is concerned, more often than not, western values influence cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) since it was primarily developed and practiced in the West. Cultural understanding and contextualizing have always led to a better therapy outcome. Many a researcher have suggested that CBT need modification and adaptation to non-western clients‘ cultural and social backgrounds. In Bangladesh, there is a scarcity of organized and systematic intervention programs in Bangla. In that case, applying and developing interventions for Bangladeshi culture to serve the affected children is of vital importance. It is the necessity of the time to adapt the intervention culturally. The main objectives of the present study were to adapt the Child Focused Cognitive Behavior Therapy as an intervention for children and assess the effectiveness of adapted Child Focused Cognitive Behavior Therapy as an intervention. To attain these two objectives, the research has been divided in two sections (section 1 & 2). Section 1 was constructed for general objective 1 and five specific objectives were administered to fulfill the general objective 1. General objective 2 was administered in section 2 with 3 specific objectives. Again, the researcher has divided section-1 in two phases (Phase 1 & 2). To accomplish the phase 1, a number of child focused activities were selected, translated and reviewed. 20 regular random children were taught some Dhaka University Institutional Repository Adaptation of child focused CBT techniques. These children also practiced the activities in several sessions. With their feedback and psychologists‘ constructive opinion by credibility questionnaires, bangla activities were reviewed and re-constructed which was the researcher‘s draf-2. In phase 2, purposively selected 10 children were skilled with draft-2. After their comments and review, draft-3 was developed. In the section 2, draft-3 was applied on 49 children, who the researcher has termed as Case Group, with extremely elevated or moderately elevated anxiety and anger. There were 3 control groups. Control Group-1 did not receive any intervention; they also did not come to the hospital for their own treatment purpose. Control group-2 and 3 were already assessed by other psychologists. There were extremely elevated or moderately elevated anxiety and anger in these children and they received intervention by general instruction and creative therapy respectively. 49 children from Case group, 28 children from control group 2 and 30 children from control group 3, all attended 14 sessions in 14 weeks. The time duration was 1 hour 30 minutes for each of the sessions. So, the total number of the sessions were 1498 (107 participants multiplied by 14 sessions). By comparing the mean score by t value, the researcher saw that among all the groups, the mean score of anxiety and anger level in the Case Group is the lowest than 3 control groups. Also, the credibility questionnaire percentage among the children, parents and psychologists proved that the child focused CBT Bangla activities, which were developed by the researcher, were more effective in reducing anger and anxiety among the children. So, the researcher finally deduced that these CBT Bangla activities could be used in a larger scale throughout the nation.

    Alienation in Selected Continental Texts
(East West University, 2010-08-15) Afrin, Sadia
Like death or abandonment, alienation is a deeply rooted feeling experienced by human. As social creatures, humans have the need to identify themselves as one of a group, whether that group is a family, a culture or a religion. The experience of alienation is one of isolation of person's need for acceptance. When a person is not accepted by a society, he became an outsider to everyone around him (Hughes, 2004). Alienation is a recurring theme in continental literature. The idea of self-alienation has played a crucial role in modem thought from German classical idealism to Marxism and Existentialism. It was first encountered in the thoughts of Wilhem von Humboldt, Hagel, and subsequently viewed in Feuerbach's and Marx. "This idea always implies the individual's estrangement from his humanity or human species being, from the individual's membership in the human species. The individual is estranged from himself insofar as he is alienated from his essential nature as a human being" (Bloom, 2007). Many masterpieces of continental literature are concerned with the theme of alienation. The term 'alienation' was introduced in the modem literary era and modem writers have explored the theme of alienation through their writings. Modernism is the period of technology and machine and it simply separated human being from others. In his Manuscript Economic and Philosophic Manuscript, Karl Marx (1964) defined "alienation as emotional isolation or dissociation from others" (45). It is found that most of the principal characters of continental texts are consistently alienated. We see them undergoing experience of isolation from society.

Analysis of training & development process of EXIM Bank Bangladesh Ltd.
(Brac University, 2023-07) Afrin, Sadia; Al-Din, Zaheed Husein Md
The banking sector is highly competitive and evolving. This sector has substantial risks and turnover. Because of these features, bank personnel training plays an essential role to be successful and ensure sustainability. The prosperity or collapse of an organization is determined by its employees. The performance of employees and their learning development is also an indirect benefit for an organization when it comes to the advantages of training. As a result, training for employees generally tries to strengthen an individual's abilities to meet an organization's current and future demands. From this report, we will know how EXIM Bank conducts its training and development program. This report includes a background study of the organization, in which I address its history or genesis. I looked over EXIM Bank Limited's EXIM Bank Training and Research Academy (EBTRA) structure in this study. EBTRA takes several initiatives to train its personnel. They adhere to the HR department's policies, procedures, philosophies, and essential functions. In this paper, I demonstrate the various types of training provided by EXIM Bank Ltd. EBTRA is very essential to the workforce. They gather data from various branches, design training, and carry it out. EXIM Bank offers training when lauching new product, in IT, Software, Risk management, Social Awareness, and Foreign Remittance. Since EXIM Bank is a Shariah-based Islamic bank, they also offer training in this area. I carried out a survey with the employees from that branch as respondents and interpreted the results. In the outcomes, I discovered several flaws in the organization when constructing a training program. For example, a lack of effective training requirement assessment; not having enough training duration; workplace equipment scarcity; IT Lab, and the management are not up to date. So, in response to these issues, I've made some suggestions that may be useful in the future. Moreover, I made recommendations that could assist them in better addressing those problems and developing an effective training program. Finally, I synthesize the research to conclude. It explains what goes into the internal training method along with the ways of improvement in order to achieve a more efficient outcome. Every part of this contributes useful information about the training and development strategy of EXIM Bank.

Assessment of parent reports of their preschool children’s sensory food preferences
(Daffodil International University, 2024-05-24) Afrin, Sadia
This cross-sectional study aimed to explore the factors influencing the food preferences of preschool-aged children, aged 2 to 6 years old, in three preschools located in Dhaka, Parents of 200 selected children completed a semi-structured questionnaire regarding their children‟s food preferences. Analysis revealed dynamic changes in children's food tastes over time, particularly evident as they age, with peak picky eating behavior observed at 4 years old. Preferences for sweet, crunchy, rich, and chewy textures evolve with age, aligning with increased openness to new food experiences, notably peaking at around four years old. This period presents an opportune time to introduce a variety of healthy food options to children. Additionally, children across all age groups showed a preference for food presented in fun-shaped and colorful packaging, although this interest diminished as they aged. These findings underscore the importance of adapting food offerings to cater to evolving tastes and developmental stages, promoting healthier eating habits. Utilizing sweet tastes and appealing textures in healthy food options can be effective strategies. This study provides valuable insights into the changing eating habits of young children, informing future programs aimed at promoting well-balanced diets and overall health.

Bacterial vaginosis in pregnancy and Its maternal and fetal outcome
(BRAC University, 2024-11) Afrin, Sadia; Haque, Fahim Kabir Monjurul
Bacterial vaginosis (BV) is one of the most common vaginal conditions, characterised by a decrease in lactobacilli and an increase in anaerobic bacteria. Data from antenatal clinics and in the literature was examined to determine the prevalence, maternal and foetal outcome and management of BV in pregnancy. About 28% of the women studied were found to have BV, concordant with global trends. It was associated with a 2.5 fold increased risk of preterm labour and increased prevalence of postpartum endometritis. Notable were foetal outcomes such as low birth weight (3-fold increased risk), neonatal sepsis. Amsel’s criteria, Nogent’s score and PCR based tests were evaluated as diagnostic methods. Amsel’s criteria are cost effective and applicable in the clinical setting; however Nugent’s scoring is more precise, and PCR based methods exhibited better sensitivity and specificity. They analysed therapeutic approaches, such as antibiotics (metronidazole and clindamycin), but these showed promise while being associated with recurrence and antimicrobial resistance. As an adjunct therapy, probiotics were identified as a promising candidate, with capacity to reduce recurrence rates and restore balance of the vaginal microbiota. The findings stress the importance of routine screening for BV in high risk pregnancies including poor resource settings. Suggested strategies included public health efforts to reduce rates of BV, such as educational programmes relating to risk factors such as smoking or douching. Future work should focus on neonatal outcomes over the longer term, optimising probiotic therapies and evaluating the cost effectiveness of universal screening initiatives to improve maternal and neonatal health outcomes worldwide.

Channel selection method for efficient EEG-based emotion analysis
(BRAC University, 2025-02) Tanjim, Salsabil; Ahmed, Zubair; Afrin, Sadia; Akbar, Ishran; Udoy, Rafsanul Islam; Rahman, Md. Shahriar
Emotion can be defined as a complex reaction pattern that takes into account a person’s behavioral and physiological characteristics. Neural impulses from different regions of the human brain are integrally responsible for generating and processing emotion. Among the existing emotion recognition systems electroencephalogram (EEG) offers the most effectiveness in capturing emotional states in humans. However, recognition of human emotions using EEG signals is quite a challenging task because it requires a balanced tradeoff between retaining the important features of the EEG signals and maintaining computational efficiency at the same time. Working on the DEAP dataset, this paper introduces a novel method of brain source localization (BSL), AgLORETA, as a refinement of the popular BSL method eLORETA. The focus of this designed AgLORETA algorithm is to iteratively refine a core element used in the inverse problem solution calculations of the conventional source localization problems, the lead field matrix. This refinement is done with the view of achieving accurate source localization results allowing us to find the regions of the human brain that generate most neural activity. The utilization of these regions is made while mapping the activities to the electrode channels placed across the scalp in 10-20 systems. The top 10 most active EEG channels have been selected in this approach. To investigate the performance of the selected channels, a combination of two EEG-based feature engineering techniques Hjorth parameters and Permutation Entropy have been applied to the EEG data. The two feature extraction methods have been chosen through various preliminary experimental trials. Finally, the EEG data is validated after feature extraction using some ML classifiers such as SVM, Decision Tree, Random Forest, and KNN. We have compared the AgLORETA algorithm with traditional dSPM, sLORETA, and eLORETA, in a similar approach and achieved promising performance, showing the highest accuracy amongst all. Thus computational complexity is reduced through the 10 selected channels out of the 32 channels of the dataset using AgLORETA.

COMPARATIVE ANALYSIS OF SEAWEEDS, REARED WITH OYSTERS IN CAPTIVE ENVIRONMENT
(Faculty of Fisheries Chattogram Veterinary and Animal Sciences University Chattogram-4225, Bangladesh, 2024-06) Afrin, Sadia
Two seaweed species, Gracilaria verrucosa and Ulva lactuca, as well as oysters, Crassostrea belcheri, were co-cultured under different treatments for 120 days in captivity. The study assessed the water quality parameters, growth performance, and proximate and biochemical composition of the organisms. G. verrucosa and C. belcheri were co-cultured (T1), U. lactuca and C. belcheri co-cultured (T2), and G. verrucosa, U. lactuca, and C. belcheri were cultured independently (C1, C2, C3), with three replications in each case. The experiment's conclusion involved a comparison of the treatments and control group's oyster growth, survival, and water quality. Apart from that, both indoor and outdoor seaweeds and oysters were compared to assess their proximate and biochemical indices. The salinity ranged from 32.75 to 22.05 psu, the dissolved oxygen from 7.19 to 4.22 ppm, and the pH from 8.72 to 6.45 ppm for each treatment. Significant relationships between salinity, conductivity, and temperature were found using principal component analysis. Significant variations were seen in the growth rates of the two seaweeds, U. lactuca exhibiting the highest live weight gain and specific growth rate in T2. The percentage of surviving oysters varied from 60% to 80%, with T2 showing the fastest growth rates. The seaweeds' moisture, ash, protein, carbohydrate, and fiber contents varied significantly, according to proximate composition analysis, with U. lactuca (indoor) having the highest protein and carbohydrate content (p < 0.05). Biochemical indices indicates that indoor U. lactuca contained the maximum total chlorophyll, carotenoids, and fucoxanthin. Significant variations were found in the fatty acid analysis of the seaweed and oyster samples. The results showed that the outdoor oyster samples had more omega-3 fatty acids (p < 0.05) while the indoor seaweed samples had lower saturated fatty acids and higher polyunsaturated fatty acids. U. lactuca grown indoors exhibited the highest quantities of both essential and non-essential amino acids (NEAA). However, oyster samples did not significantly differ in their EAA content when grown indoors or outdoors, they did exhibit higher levels of NEAA in outdoors. The study emphasizes how culture circumstances affect the nutritional and biochemical profiles of seaweeds and oysters, and it offers indoor co-culture as a workable substitute for bad environmental conditions that yet allow for optimal growth and nutritional quality.

(BRAC University, 2025-10) Mahfuz, Shoeb; Rahman, MD. Shadman Sakib; Saklain, Most Sanjida; Achol, Naima Nawar; Afrin, Sadia; Hossain, Muhammad Iqbal
Universal Serial Bus (USB) devices are an inseparable part of modern computing and they are also a considerable cybersecurity threat. Malicious hardware like BadUSBs, Keyloggers and other peripherals that have been reprogrammed can pose as legitimate devices, execute commands that are not authorized and steal confidential data without the user’s knowledge. This study introduces a detailed software-based system that attempts to identify and prevent malicious USB actions by employing a multi-layered security system. The proposed system incorporates USB metadata validation system, behavioral tracking, anomaly detection and user-verification to offer high protection without affecting usability. The framework is deployed by the device connection and it temporarily isolates the device as it tries to verify the authenticity of the device by analysing power consumption, keystroke timing, CAPTCHA and mouse hover-based user authentication. In its simplest form, a machine-learning model trained on real and GAN-enhanced data would allow the process of adaptive threat detection that can detect changing attack patterns with high accuracy. Experimental tests prove that the system attains high detection effectiveness and a very low false-positive level, which effectively eliminates the risks of malicious USB devices. This product fills a severe gap in endpoint protection by providing a practical, smart and user-friendly solution to protect personal and enterprise space against the emerging threat of USB-based attacks.

Fake News in Social Media: Exploring the Impacts and Regulating Laws on Spreading Out Fake News
(East West University, 2022-04-22) Afrin, Sadia
The generation and dissemination of current events in our society are altering in this modern age of the internet and other social networks. A new process has evolved: the rapid conversion of conventional print media into the online media. On the one side, the internet has liberalized news creation and distribution, but it has also become a potential source for misleading information. Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, and Twitter are becoming strong sites for distributing information and media, given the growing usage of smartphones. New forms of online interaction, including Skype, WhatsApp, Messenger, LINE, among many others, have exacerbated the propagation of fake news. This paper tries to check whether the laws of Bangladesh are capable to bring the propagators of fake news to justice, especially propagators disseminating fake news beyond the border of Bangladesh. The present concerns surrounding false news are examined using the standard empirical-analytical technique in this research. In doing so the paper tried to illustrate and compare both the cases of the spread of fake news from Bangladesh and beyond Bangladesh. The paper argues that Bangladesh’s Government enacted laws that empowered the government to control the effect of fake news in Bangladesh but such laws are more reactive in nature rather than being proactive. As a result, the laws are not sufficient to mitigate damages and negative social aspects of fake news.

Hypothyroidism: an overview of the disease and current treatment approach
(BRAC University, 2026-02) Afrin, Sadia; Sheikh, Zara
Hypothyroidism (underactive thyroid) is a condition where the thyroid gland does not produce enough thyroid hormones to meet the body’s needs. As these hormones regulate how the body uses energy (metabolism), their deficiency causes many body functions to slow down. Common causes include Hashimoto’s disease (autoimmune attack), iodine deficiency, or post-treatment effects. Symptoms develop slowly, including fatigue, cold intolerance, weight gain, constipation, dry skin/hair, hoarse voice, depression, and memory issues. Levothyroxine monotherapy is the standard treatment for hypothyroidism. Nonetheless, numerous unclear inquiries remain about patients who are biochemically stable yet dissatisfied with their therapy results. The present review is to give an overview of hypothyroidism disease, epidemiology of the disease, causes of hypothyroidism, highlighting the key considerations in diagnosis and current treatment of hypothyroidism along with providing future directions for research and improve management of the disease. Future research should investigate whether alternate regimens could offer a solution for a particular group of people with remaining symptoms. Investigation of the efficacy of new formulations (e.g., slow-release liothyronine) or increased administration frequency of levothyroxine-liothyronine combination therapy (e.g., tri-daily liothyronine) in alleviating patient symptoms, alongside the identification of patient subgroups that may benefit from alternatives to levothyroxine monotherapy (e.g., through the identification of additional genetic polymorphisms that could elucidate the individual thyroid set-point) could provide a new dimension to hypothyroidism management.
