Abstract

Two pot experiments were conducted with standard (S) and half standard (S/2) extract of Neem (Azadirachta indica), Marigold (Tagetes patula), Dholkalmi (Ipomoea fistulosa), Bashak (Adhatoda vasica), rhizome extract of Ginger (Zingiber officinale) and Mustard (Brassica napus) oil-cake extracts to evaluate their efficacy against root-knot (Meloidogyne incognita) disease of tomato at 10 and 30 days after transplantation. Standard extract of Bashak showed the best performance followed by Mustard oil-cake, Neem, Marigold, Dholkalmi and rhizome of Ginger as evident with better plant growth characters like length of shoot and root, fresh weight of shoot and root as well as yield with the reduction in number of gall compared to the rest treatments. Half standard (S/2) extract of Bashak also gave superior response followed by Mustard oil-cake, Neem, Marigold, Dholkalmi and rhizome of Ginger on plant growth parameters and yield with reduced galling than control treatment. All the treatments exhibited superior impact on plant growth and yield of tomato at 10 days after transplantation than those at 30 days after transplantation over control treatment. Negative correlations between galling incidence and shoot and root length as well as with yield indicated the strong positive effect of the treatments as envisaged with the suppression of the nematode activity enhancing growth and yield of tomato.

Description

Tomato (Lycopersicon lycopersicum L.) is one of the principal vegetable crops grown in larger part of our country and most of the people depend on it on account of its food value. It is an important vegetable for its special nutritive value and its wide-spread cultivation. It is abundantly available in the winter season. It ranks the second in importance to potato in the tropics on the basis of production and economic importance. In Bangladesh 17.9 thousand hectare land is under its cultivation and the total production is 119.9 thousand metric tons per annum approximately (BBS, 2004).
