Abstract

The present piece of research work was conducted during the period from September 2013 to February 2014 in rabi season in the experimental area of Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Sher-e-Bangla Nagar, Dhaka to find out the performance of brinjal genotypes (Solanum ,nelongena L.) under different growth conditions. The experiment consisted of two factors: Factor A: Cowdung and chemical fertilizers; T: Cowdung, T2: Cowdung + Urea + TSP + MP, 13: Urea + TSP + MP and 14: TSP + MP; Factor B: Different brinjal variety. Vi: BAR! Begun-I, V2: BAR! Begun-2, V3: BAR! Begun-3, V4: BAR! Begun-4, V5: BAR! Begun-5, V6: BAR! Begun-6, V7: BAR! Begnn-7, Vg: BAR! Begun-8, V9: BAR! Begun-9, V10: BAR! Begun-lO. The two factors experiment was laid out in Split-plot design with three replications. Mean performance and variability studies were done on different yield and yield contributing characters of brinjal variety due to the environmental condition created by application of cowdung and chemical fertilizers treatment. For different treatment, the maximum number of fruits per plant (34.29) was recorded from T2 and the minimum number (31.57) from T4. The highest weight of individual fruit (75.61 g) was observed from T2, again the lowest weight (66.66 g) from 14. The highest yield per plant of brinjal (2.53 kg) was recorded from T2 and the lowest yield (2.04 kg) from 14. For different variety, the maximum number of fruits per plant (52.73) was found from Vi, whereas the minimum number (19.33) from V6. The highest weight of individual fruit (95.52 g) was obtained from V6, whereas the lowest weight (54.57 g) from V1 . The highest yield per plant of brinjal (3.16 kg) was observed from V7 (BAR! Begun-2), while the lowest yield per plant (1.48 kg) from V7. In case of combined effect of treatments and variety, the maximum number of fruits per plant (55.60) was found from T7V1, again the minimum number (17.67) from T3V6. The highest weight of individual fruit (99.40 g) was attained from 12V6, whereas the lowest weight (47.78 g) from LVI. The highest yield per plant of brinjal (3.63 kg) was found from T2V4, whereas the lowest yield (1.20 kg) from 14V7. The highest genetic advance along with high heritability was recorded for days required for l' flowering, number of leaves per plant, number of fruits per plant, length of brinjal, diameter of brinjal and yield per plant, indicating the importance of these traits in selection for high yield. BAR! Begun-2 was found to be promisthg in the application of Cowdung + Urea + TSP + MP. vii
