Abstract
This study was aimed to assess antioxidant and antidiabetic properties of Lagerstroemia thorell since no previous reports on its bioactivity screening were found during extensive literature search. Antioxidant activity was determined using total phenolic acid and total flavonoid content assays, while antidiabetic property was evaluated by α-amylase inhibition assay. The phytochemical screening confirmed the presence of flavonoids, polyphenols, glycosides, tannins, carbohydrates, steroids, and resins in L. thorelli. L. thorelli exhibited strong antidiabetic activity, inhibiting α-amylase by 93.9 ± 3.429% at the highest concentration, closely resembling the standard's (Glimepiride) 95.36 ± 3.345% inhibition rate. Furthermore, the plant exhibited a moderate level of antioxidant activity, with a phenolic acid content of 45.18 ± 4.138 mg GAE/g at the highest concentration. The findings inferred that L. thorelli can be used as a potent antidiabetic agent. However, further in-vivo studies and clinical trials are warranted to use it for the treatment of diabetes.
