A Case Report on the Surgical Correction of an Aural Haematoma in a Dog

Abstract

Canine veterinary medicine faces significant challenges in managing aural hematomas due to their complex etiology and tendency to recur. This case study details the diagnosis and treatment course for a 5 year old male dog with a recurrent auditory hematoma. Initially, the dog was treated non surgically with corticosteroid therapy and needle drainage. While these methods helped alleviate symptoms, they were insufficient to prevent recurrence. However, a surgical procedure was used to close the wound by making incisions to remove accumulated blood and sewing "through and through mattress" sutures. Antibiotics and corticosteroid medication were part of the post-operative care. Based on the severity and recurrence of the problem, the case highlights the value of a comprehensive strategy that takes into account both non-surgical and surgical therapies.
