Heifer Management in Commercial Dairy Farm in Lakshmipur Sadar, Lakshmipur, Bangladesh

Abstract

This study explores the critical role of heifer management in Bangladesh's dairy sector, which is vital for the agricultural economy and the livelihoods of millions. It analyzes various factors affecting heifer rearing, including nutrition, disease management, housing conditions, and reproductive techniques. A survey was conducted on ten dairy farms in the Lakshmipur District from March to May 2024, collecting data on farm characteristics, animal types, husbandry practices, and management strategies. The results indicate that effective heifer management can significantly enhance the sustainability and profitability of dairy operations. The average age at which heifers attain puberty was found to be 18 months, with a preference for artificial insemination and a strong focus on biosecurity measures. The findings highlight the need for improved housing, feeding practices, and disease management to optimize the growth and reproductive health of heifers, which are regarded as valuable future assets for dairy farms.
