BLOOD TRANSFUSION FOR RODENTICIDE TOXICITY IN A DOG, A CASE REPORT.

dc.description.abstractThe study was conducted in a 5 months aged Labrador dog weighing 4kg that was brought to the Veterinary Teaching Hospital , Veterinary College and Research Institute of Namakkal under Tamil Nadu Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (TANUVAS), Namakkal, Tamil Nadu, INDIA. Clinical history reveled that it had took households rodenticide 2 days before, and showed weakness and lethargic condition. Based on clinical history, clinical examination and laboratory test the case was diagnosed as a rodenticide toxicity. Before blood transfusion the Packed Cell Volume (PCV) and Total Erythrocyte Count (TEC) was 15% and 2.3x106 million/ µl respectively, which was below from the normal level. The case was treated by antidote Vitamin K-1, blood transfusion and antihistaminic preparation. After blood transfusion the PCV and TEC both were increased respectively 35% and 4.3x106 million/ µl respectively. The case was successfully recovered by management and care within 15 days
