Abstract

A seven-month-old kid (Black Bengal goat) weighing 16 kg with obstructive urolithiasis with a history of complete blockage of urine discharge for 2 days and distended urinary bladder was presented in the Upazilla Livestock Office and Veterinary Hospital, Mymensingh Sadar, Mymensingh. The investigation was carried out to determine the occurrence and find a suitable surgical method for the management of obstructive urolithiasis in goats. After taking the previous history, which included clinical signs of anuria, enlargement of bladder size, etc., we decided to undergo a minimal invasive surgical tube cystostomy procedure through the left paralumbar fossa with the proper consent from the owner of the goat. The operation was conducted under appropriate sedation and local anesthesia using the standard open surgical technique. The animal was positioned in right lateral recumbency, and a catheter was inserted into the bladder via a cannula, secured with a skin suture. After the completion of the procedure, an ointment containing povidone-iodine was applied in the wound site and systemic antibiotics with painkillers were administered as postoperative care. The patient was discharged at the same day and the owner was advised to keep the patient in clean bedding with restricted movement to avoid further infection and quick recovery. Statistical investigation showed that summer season male goats, and over 8 months of aged goats were more prone to urolithiasis.
