Abstract
reliminary phytochemical screening of the ethanolic extract of the leaves of the Mangifera indica (Family- Anacardiaceae) revealed the presence of alkaloids, flavonoids, reducPing suger, tannins and saponins. The antidiarrhoeal activity of the extract (200 mg/kg) was assessed on experimental animal and a dose dependent decrease in the total number of fecal droppings was observed in castrol oil induced diarrhea in rat. The antimicrobial effect of the ethanolic extract of the mango leaves was studied according to the diffusion method. The extract showed an activity with regard to eight bacteria species- Bacillus subtilis (BTCC 17), B. megaterium (BTCC 18) B. cereus (BTCC 19), Staphylococcus aureus (ATCC6538),Proteus sp[CRL(ICDDR’ B)], Shigella sonnei [ CRL (ICDDR, B)] , Shigella flexinary[CRL(ICDDR’ B)] and Bacillus polimyxa(BTCC 16) .In cytotoxic determination, LC50 of the plant extract was 879.70µg/ml that indicate the wide range of LC50 value it means no cytotoxic effect was found
