Distribution, Adaptation and Cytotype Diversity of Cynodon Dactylon (L.) Pers. In Different Bio-Ecological Zones of Bangladesh

Abstract

Cynodon dactylon (L.) Pers. is a typical warm season turfgrass belongs to the family Poaceae and this grass species is widely adapted to various environments of tropical and sub-tropical regions around the world (Zheng et al. 2017). It spreads by scaly rhizomes and flat stolons. This plant species is a C4 grass species, which has been included in the Global Compendium of Weeds (Randall 2012). It has also been listed as one of the most serious agricultural and environmental weeds in the world (Holm et al. 1977). This grass species has different vernacular names. In Bengali, it is known as Durba, Dub, Dubla, Doorva, Neel Doorva (Asthana et al. 2012). In English it is termed as Couch grass, Bahama grass, Bermuda grass, Dun grass, Doab grass etc. mentioned common name for all the East African rhizomatous species of Cynodon as Bermuda grass Harlan (1970) and Burton and Hanna (1985). However, Harlan and de Wet (1969) mentioned that Cynodon dactylon has become a ubiquitous cosmopolitan weed.
