Abstract

The present study was undertaken to identify the university level academic performance of students in relation to the socio-demographic, economic and other academic environments, as well as to make conclusions for the improvement of academic performances. The study was carried out on the students of Hajee Mohammad Danesh Science and Technology University (HSTU), Dinajpur keeping in view of its multi-disciplinary, multi-pattern degree, meritorious enrolled students at the largest technical university of the North West region of the country. The number of sampled students for this study was 226, consisted of 128 male and 98 female students selected from the 434 students of Level-4 Semester-I of the year 2013 among the eight degree offering disciplines of undergraduate students.

Description

Bangladesh is the eighth largest nation in the world with a population of about 151.41 million on a land of 147570 sq. km in developing countries of the world (BBS, 2011). It has huge possible for rapid development in the new world economy. The people of the country are ambitious, hard working, very mindful of democratic norms and the value of education, mainly higher education. Poverty is the major obstruction of pursuing quality education in this country. Academic performance, socio-demographic and economic is the most vital considerations among students at university level. The academic performance can be illustrated by grade point average (GPA). There are still some differences in performance among the students. Several studies identified internal and external factors associated with academic performance.
