Abstract

The study was conducted in Sadar upazila of Dinajpur district to investigate the pathological conditions of livers of goats. In a study of one year starting from march 2011 to February 2012 ,a total of 93 goat livers were collected from different slaughter houses. The gross lesions were recorded and examined in Department of Pathology and Parasitology, Hajee Mohammad Danesh Science and Technology University, Dinajpur. Portion of each liver was preserved in 10% formalin for histopathology .Among the samples 62 were affected with liver flukes and the infection rate was 66.67%. The ill heath goats of Sadar upazila of Dinajpur district was found infected with liver flukes, hepatic abscess, cirrhosis and liver hemorrhage. Among these diseases the rate of fascioliasis is high and the livers of female goats were more affected with liver diseases than the male.

Description

Goat, the poor man’s cow and the second important livestock in Bangladesh, plays a vital role to promote both the health and wealth of the nation by supplying meat and milk of high caloric value and by earning substantial amount of foreign exchange from exported skin and by- products respectively. The total population of goat in Bangladesh approximates 27 million (Economic Review, 2010) which should be developed and increased extensively with the application of technical knowledge in order to meet the protein scarcity of our nation. Like other livestock, goats are also susceptible to various disease conditions causing debility and mortality which lead to huge economic loss.
