Abstract

A field experiment was conducted to study the effect of nitrogen on the growth and yield of BARI Tomato-2 and BARI Tomato-14 at Sher-eBangla Agricultural University Farm of Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka during the period from October 2014 to March 2015. There were five nitrogen levels, viz., 0, 80, 100, 120 and 140 kg N ha on two varieties of tomato (BARI Tomato-2 and BARI Tomato-14). The experiment was laid out in a RCBD with three replications. Varieties showed significant influence on the growth and yield contributing characters of tomato. Between two varieties, the plant height, number of cluster per plant, flower per plant, fruit per plant, weight of fruit per plant and yield were found highest in BARI tomato 14 as compared to BARI Tomato-2. Nitrogen showed significant influence on the growth and yield contributing characters of tomato. The plant height, number of cluster per plant, flower per plant, fruit per plant, weight of fruit per plant and yield were the highest when 120 kg N/ha was appnitrogen and Varieties also exhibited significant variation in all the yield component and yield. The combination of 120 kg N/ha on BARI Tomato14 was produced the highest yield (47.83 t/ha) and lowest (30.15 t/ha) from 0 kg N/ha on the BARI Tomato-2. lied. The combination of -1
