Abstract

This qualitative study explores parents' perceptions of child abuse and its effect on children's development in Bangladesh. It examines parents' understanding of abusive behaviors, their disciplinary practices, and their awareness of the long-term consequences of maltreatment. The study highlights the challenges parents face in implementing positive discipline methods and their experiences in creating safe environments for children's growth. By analyzing parental perspectives through in-depth interviews and group discussions, the research identifies critical gaps in recognizing non-physical forms of abuse and the influence of cultural norms on disciplinary approaches. The findings reveal that while parents primarily associate abuse with physical harm, many overlook emotional neglect and psychological consequences. Economic stress and limited awareness further hinder the adoption of non-violent discipline strategies. The study underscores the need for community-based parenting education programs and policy reforms to promote positive child-rearing practices. These insights can guide policymakers, educators, and social workers in developing targeted interventions to address child maltreatment, ultimately fostering safer and more nurturing environments for children's holistic development in Bangladesh.
