Description
In Bangladesh, the Black Bengal goat is called poor man’s cow, occupies a
very significant position as an animal genetic resource in the predominantly
agro based economy of the country having greater importance particularly in
subsistence agricultural situations. The goat production of the country as
estimated during the year 33.5 million and ranks second in term of the total
number, regarding meat, milk and skin production. The goat shares about
28.0, 23.0, and 28.0 percent, respectively among the total contributions off
livestock. In Bangladesh the annual consumption of meat and milk percent is
far below the normal requirements of the peoples compared to other
developing countries. There is an acute shortage of animal protein in the
country, which becomes a great threat to the general of nation. The goats are
known to be famous for their adaptability, fertility, delicacy of meat and
superior skin quality. The economy of Bangladesh is mainly based on
agriculture. Livestock a crucial role in the agricultural economy about 36
percent of the total protein comes from the livestock products in our everyday
life. In our country 25 percent peoples are directly engaged in livestock sector
and 50 percent peoples are partly associated in livestock production. The
contribution of livestock sub-sector to the GDP was 2.95 percent, which was
estimated about 17.32 percent GDP to agriculture. The growth of livestock in
GDP was 7.23 percent. (Economic review, 2006).
